It's always surprised me how many electrical engineers and techs don't know you can turn a fet on and off by grounding the gate or connecting to the drain, while measuring the drain-source resistance or voltage drop. That way you only need a simple meter to check for dead fets.

Very true. BTW I made a couple of field effect transistors last week so there will be a video about that soon hopefully. Also vacuum thin film deposition upcoming.

Fantastic! Speaking of thin films, you should have seen the look on my coworker's face when I suggested we try making crude devices with the TiO2 and SiO2 e-beam deposition system we use for night vision panels ;-) - and on a similar note, last night I read a fascinating few pages in a book published in 1950 I just acquired, about a device called a fieldistor: it appears to be a point-contact fet, where air or oil are used as the dielectric! The grid, as they call it, is set within 50-100 microns of a typical point-contact diode junction, and overall the device exhibits current gains in the range of 10,000-100,000, though only unity voltage gain. The book is Rectifying Semi-Conductor Contacts, by Henisch.

Very interesting. I'm curious about that fieldistor device. Shoot me an email a sam@fsmultirotors.com so I have your email please. Happy holidays.
