MY CANCER STORY.

  • Last fall, I was diagnosed with testicular cancer. After a surgery and 9 weeks of chemotherapy, I’m happy to report that things are finally looking up.
As someone who had never had any health issues before and didn’t have a family history of this sort of thing, I was shocked and completely devastated when I got the call. The past 6 months have been the most challenging times of my entire life and pushed me well beyond my breaking point on multiple occasions. Despite the physical, mental, and emotional roller coaster Mike and I both embarked on, I’m proud to say that it forced me to find strength and resilience I never knew I had and has given me an even greater appreciation for life.
Mike was an absolute rockstar nurse and the best partner I could ever ask for throughout this entire journey. He drove me to daily appointments, changed my bandages, stayed on top of my medication schedule, and provided me with a really comfortable shoulder to cry on. I can’t imagine how I would have done this without him. We were already such a solid unit before any of this took place, but after surviving cancer together during a pandemic, our bond feels stronger than I could ever explain.
The transition back into normal life has been strange and I’m still figuring it out. The past 6 months have felt like a bad dream and I’m just trying to move forward with a positive attitude and take things day by day. The one thing I know for sure is that I will never take another day, experience, or moment for granted. To anyone still reading this, I promise that you can and will overcome whatever you’re going through. It might not be easy. It might really suck and make you question yourself a lot, but you can do it. Keep going and keep fighting. 👊
We made a video to talk about our journey in greater detail. I really hope that it can help someone out there and raise awareness about testicular cancer.
    Love,
    Scotty & Mike

Not even sure how I stumbled upon this video, but really felt like I should comment :) I did my entire healthcare career, almost 20 years, at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Over those years I've heard cancer story after cancer story after cancer story. Just wanted to say that this is one of the most well spoken, "real", and articulate narratives of an experience I've seen. So well done, genuine, and heartfelt - all with such an amazing attitude and perspective. I'm sure you know how incredibly lucky you are to have the partner you do to be there through it all - that can be such a make or break component. Your comment about not being able to "unsee, or unhear" what you've seen and heard is spot on - it changes you forever. Congrats on your success, and best of luck!

Thanks for sharing. It reminded me a lot of my year with cancer surgery & (in my case) 6 weeks of radiation treatment. I was lucky in that I didn’t do it during a pandemic, but my 3 weeks in the hospital was really isolating... so I can imagine how it was worse during a pandemic (although my week in the ICU, I couldn’t have visitors.) I think I grew personally with mine, it sounds like you have as well. (Fantastic that your partner was so supportive, that helped me enormously too.) 7 years out I can say: it gets better.

I was diagnosed with lymphoma in August 2013 & went through 6 months of chemo @ the local VA hospital. On 9/9/99 they removed my prostate for prostate cancer. 21 years later in 2020 the cancer returned. They are now treating it with hormone therapy. I get a hormone shot every 6 months. The hormone shot does not kill the cancer, it just slows the growth. I was also diagnosed with HIV+ in 2011. My latest T-cell count was 1009 which is fantastic & my viral load is undetectable. Stay positive & keep fighting!!!

This is pretty shocking! It's amazing that cancer can strike the healthiest of people, it really doesn't discriminate. I'm so glad you caught it when you did (even though it had spread a bit). Keep up on your follow up appointments and you'll be great! I was diagnosed with colon cancer at 36 (now 38) and had surgery and have gone though 25 rounds of chemo (definitely relate to the chemo brain, change in taste, constant nausea, etc). Unfortunately mine spread later on to my liver and stomach lining so I'll be on chemo for the rest of my life. The biggest thing I remember that keeps me going is that it could always be worse. I'm very fortunate that it wasn't worse and if you think about the fact that KIDS get cancer, it makes me strong enough to face reality and be thankful for everything that I do have because it could definitely be worse. Best of luck to you, and thank you so much for sharing your story! Really proud of you for going through this with such a great attitude and very glad you have such a great support system!

This just came up in my feed for some reason. I watched it when it first came out but decided to watch it again tonight. I lost my oldest sister to cancer 5 months ago and I know what she went through. It took 1.5 years to kill her. She started with lung cancer and it moved to her brain. I am so glad that everything is going well for you as far as the cancer is going. I hope it never comes back and you and Mike have a long happy life together! I don't know how long I have been following you here and on twitter but I knew that every time I saw pictures of you two together that you belonged together as husbands (and would once in a while say so, lol)

First let me say that I am glad that you are doing well despite having cancer you seem to be in good spirits which can have a real impact on your recovery. I hope that things continue to get better. It must have been hard for Mike who wasn't able to be with you during treatment because of covid, however, reducing the risk of infection with cancer patients who's immune system is very low could have very bad and negative consequences to say the least. It is also brave to post your story I am sure you have felt vulnerable and questioning your life and putting it on a social platform. People need to understand that testicular cancer though rare, can and does happen to people, and a simple self check can mean good vs bad prognosis if guys ignore it for months and by then it could have spread and have a worse outcome. You are healthy, eat right, don't party that much except the time you accidentally roofied youself with the desert edibles lol. Stay strong, be positive, continue to love each other and I believe that you with have both quality and quanity of life to put all of this behind you and live your best life ever.

Scotty I am so Thankful you are on the road to getting better. Just remember to STAY STRONG! With Mike as your nurse, all things are possible. There is one drug that is powerful and that is Love and you have that from family and friends on here. I am in North Carolina but I got ya any way I can. It starts with Mike and spreads like a bunch of flowers. Spring as sprung so lets get you feeling better and back into that role you had to give up. Mike my friend. Hang in there. You are stronger than you know. It is called Love and it will carry you through all things possible. See ya both next time and yes, it will be soon. By the way Scotty, the hair looked great as a southern country myself I keep it short like that so just relax and enjoy it for now, and remember it will grow back when the meds have kicked Cancer is butt. STAY STRONG and safe. Love ya both.
