  • Welcome to the latest lethal beauty build-up, the Tuplovev-160 White Swan, with the NATO reporting name of “Blackjack”. Designed in the 1970’s and built in the 1980’s, this supersonic bomber can carry a large and deadly arsenal. The 1/72 scale Trumpeter model is a real behemoth, but at the same time it is so delicate and intricately detailed that it is a pleasure to build.

    A beautiful beast of a model!
    A beautiful beast of a plane!
    I think you made just the right call on the weathering - to copy the reference pictures would run the risk of looking like you had overdone it.
    It is nice to see that Trumpeter are thinking about the structure of the model and using stronger plastic for the undercarriage.
    Nicely done sir... but where are you going to keep it!

      Thanks, Alon! You are way too kind 😃I started building this model in January of last year, and then February happened, and I didn't build much of anything for a while! Then the USA announced the B-21 and I thought, yeah, let's finish this thing! It is a beautiful aircraft, especially with wings spread out, so I'm glad she's finished. And I'm happy that she has a decent undercarriage - I've had way too many of those snap off in the past. Thanks, as always, for checking out the video. I really need to run the videos by you before publishing them, though. I probably made a boatload goofs in this one, as the subject was way over my head! Thanks again, you are much appreciated! 😁

      @@OstrichLongneck One question? what speific paint brand should i get for my TU-160n model?

    • @OstrichLongneck
      @OstrichLongneck  9 месяцев назад

      @@timham450 I used Mr Hobby lacquers. They have a whole bunch of whites and off-whites to create a bit of color variation, and don't need a base coat. I used mostly C316 (almost 3 bottles!) and tried to break it up by painting some panels with C69 and C311. It looks a lot better in real life - the camera didn't quite pick up all the different shades.

  • @fredtedstedman
    @fredtedstedman Год назад +3

    Always looks like copy of B1 , are you sure it was built to compete with B-52 ? I had never noticed but in the film it shows , 13:35 when wing is swept , two huge "wing fences" which deploy upwards ( not very stealthy ?) like fins . she is a wonderful model , this is more like engineering than modelling ! 😍😍😍😍😍😍

    • @OstrichLongneck
      @OstrichLongneck  Год назад +1

      The Russians touted her as a "bigger, better" version of the B1 in one of the documentaries I watched. It's actually weird, the B1 had its maiden flight in 1974, and the Soviets commissioned the Tu-160 in 1975. Coincidence? 🤣🤣🤣 Good catch, those bits sticking up in the footage. I see they're positioned that way in the build instructions for the "wings closed" option, too. I never noticed them before. You're right though, that totally negates all hopes for a stealthy profile 😱

    • @aircool3392
      @aircool3392 Год назад +1

      Good spot. I think those are the inboard trailing corners of the wing which have to deflect upwards so as not to kebab the outboard engines as the wings sweep inwards. They must have concluded that the lift/stability these pieces give in the wings-out configuration was worth the drag/radar issues in the wings-in configuration and gone for that compromise.
      Odd though. Plenty of stuff to go wrong!

    • @fredtedstedman
      @fredtedstedman Год назад +1

      @@aircool3392 referred to as "wing root seal" on engineering cutaway drawings , you can see the shape of it as part of the trailing edge when wings extended !

    It's a pity that it's not with Ukrainian markings, because the 160 were the first to be adopted by the Ukrainians and the Ukrainian school had the best flight and training base, then they forced Ukraine to give these planes to Russia with everything!!!!
