  • Came first in my Film and TV class for this analysis, given and A++
I am active on RUclips daily and will respond to any comments :D Have a good day!
The film footage used in this is obviously not mine - any nessessary rights of those clips and audios go to Patron Inc and Universal Studios. This is a commentary/analytical video, however I do let some clips run with the original soundtrack, so not sure about the fair use.

Don't you think you are totally overthinking everything ??
Suppose her dress had been yellow instead of green ?
    Or purple?
I mean, it had to be some colour.......

Different shades of yellow probably would have been a good fit if lonelyhearts was younger, as yellow can be devisive with being both youthful and joyous, but can also have associations with illness, betrayal, and anxiety, which we do see in her character. Definitely could have played with different hues to reflect her inner turmoil more directly like a shrivelling sunflower.
The color purple (rather than lilac) is usually reserved for highly formal characters often associated with royalty, nobility, luxury, power, and ambition. It's tied to wealth and extravagance, dignity, grandeur, devotion.

To be honest, as much as I love Alfred Hitchcock as a director, I don't believe he put that much time or thought into the colour of the clothes worn by actresses........
Actually they had wardrobe people who dressed the actors, so unless he wanted something specific, the clothing was left in the capable hands of the people paid to dress them.
In summation, you are totally overthinking the haphazard choice of colour in the clothing, and anyone could come up with totally different ideas about their colour chosen for a scene. It's totally subjective.
And since purple is supposedly the colour of royalty, maybe the actress could be a queen had she worn it.

I sincerely doubt that Alfred Hitchcock had the time or desire to deliberate about everyone's wardrobe choices. There may have been times when he may have been specific, however I doubt he got into the kind of detail you are indulging in, such as colours representing the kind of minute details you describe.
He was far too busy making movies.
