No, Sora didn't use magic at the beginning of Kingdom Hearts 1 vanilla or final mix plus. So, the wooden sword wasn't effective to the shadow heartless.

It has 0 attack, but you still deal damage based on Sora's strength stat. Later in the game when Sora loses his keyblade and has to use the Wooden Sword again, it actually is not the sword itself that causes Sora to deal so little damage. Using hacks, it has been shown that even if Sora equips a better weapon during that time, he still deals minimal damage. So instead of the weapon itself being weak, the devs gave Sora himself a huge debuff. In-universe, it is the sword. But in game mechanics, Sora is debuffed regardless of what weapon he is using. If you give Sora the wooden sword it'll nerf the damage of physical attacks (He can't deal any damage with the toy sword.) but his magic does remain untouched (outside of the sword having +0 magic attack) since even in kh1 that's how the wood blade worked.

If I could change this mod, I would've made Steve's mining be dependent on what pickaxe he has: -Can't mine iron surfaces or acquire iron with wood pickaxe -Can't mine up gold or diamonds with wood or stone pickaxes I would also make these additional changes: -mining up gold spawns in mii brawlers with the Minecraft pig costume to beat you up -Steve can receive fall damage (and dies when falling from far high enough) -no 2nd jump -The fishing rod can break (easily) -can only place blocks connected to other blocks and/or the stage (also applies to upsmash and down air) -lava bucket down smash will also hurt Steve and set him on fire -has a hunger meter that depletes with running and jumping, becomes unable to dash when low, takes damage when empty, and can only be replenished with side taunt. -zombie skin constantly takes fire damage on stages with sunlight -enderman skin receives heavy damage from water attacks (fludd, squirtle, greninja, etc) and when touching water in stages.
I love the glitch effects. Really makes it feel like Lily broke into Nick’s house to mod his switch.
