Hi Steph and Leigh, a while ago I asked you about by Whakan Corridor by Steyr Truck, and your reply was so quick and friendly. Maybe today I can give something back. Our Truck is ready now, and we put a lot of thought into water filtration. We ended up with filtering twice, when filling the tank and when using the water. The first filtering is to ensure that no organisms make it into the tank in the first place, the second obviously to have pure water still after weeks of driving it around. We use the same cartridge type for both filters in order to only carry one type as replacement, and it is only ONE cartridge which keeps the system compact. It filters out sediment, bacteria and viruses >99,99%, the reason being that the outer ceramic layer has 25nm pores, and smells etc. are removed with activated carbon on the inside. Downsides; you need a pressure pump, the cartridges are not cheap and too muddy water may clog the cartridge. We used to have a sailing boat and installed a Seagull inline filter. It removed all the 'junk' from the water that you talk about and made it safe to drink. You'll need a pressurised system to do this but the installation is easy and the system does not take up a lot of space. Only downside is the filters are quite expensive. Go for the smaller unit. A big no-no is do not put any sort of water purifier in the tank as it may cause problems with the filter. Great videos and keep up the good work. Let me know if you need more info.
Totally agree..... I've got one on my yacht, general ecology seagull water filter system, as they are called in UK. Filters out heavy metals too. Compact units which are easy to install. Fitted as standard to Island Packet Yachts...... Just look at their cost and you know they fit the best
Leigh, one very interesting video, and thanks for sharing this vital info, When I was a lad in the 1960s, I was told by an old Bushy if out of water, Drink from the middle of the running stream, not the edges where the water is still, when the water is running over a rocky bottom the water will purifies itself in a distance of 20 feet, over a sandy bottom you need 50 feet. big fan from Australia

For your hiking I recommend the Katadyn Befree filter and bottle. It weighs very little, is good for at least 1000 ltrs, and you can drink straight from it, or just fill your water bottle. I carry 2 750 ml smart water bottle, and just refill from the 600 ml Befree. Works a treat, and no batteries! Another great video.
Great video. I installed filter / UV system from the Water Fixer (model 212). I share the same concern of a broken UV light but after countless miles of washboard road and rough road / 4-wheeling in general it has held up. Water always tastes great regardless of the source. Admittedly I haven't put in any real nasty looking water yet, but I have faith in it. I have it plumbed to a dedicated drinking water faucet.

In the late 80 I lived in IL and had a small on demand water filter with an UV-lamp hooked up to pressurized water. It needed 220V was all in a plastic box the size of a small car first aid kit. I would look up again for products from their, they are well tested, reliable and not expensive.
Yess you can't drink directly a tap water source here in Bali (Indonesia in general). But it is clean enough to use for bath or wash. Im looking down your video which contains your trip in Indonesia, can't find it yet 😂. Always in good health and keep on adventure mate 💪🏼
Great question and video. I’m leaning towards the Acuva purification system (in-line filter and UV filter). The UV filter only turns on when you open the faucet and use the water. This will help to minimize the power consumption. To make sure the UV filter can do it’s work, the pressure has to be around 12psi - great if you want to reduce water consumption but a pain if you want to fill up something quick (or use the same hose as a shower). I currently have a filter but the challenge is to find replacement filters in other parts of the world and the one I have doesn’t take out some of the bacteria and viruses. The filters that do that are all to big for the space I have available.
I live onboard a sailing vessel, and use a reverse osmosis installation that produces 60 litres safe to drink water p hour and is not much bigger than a 50-litre water tank. it might be somewhat too bulky and heavy for your needs, but I'm sure there are also more compact systems available.
I'm pretty sure the general rule for how much water you'll need is three litres per day, per person, per man, per degree over 25 degrees celcius, per kilometre if walking on foot, in the winter months dividing it by two, plus... another litre... at the end. :-)
Another easy way to clean the water tanks is to use those tablets for "false teeth"... e.g. Steradent-tablets Less agressive than bleach and leaves no taste (les rinsing). Those tablet may not be available in the wilderness, but most supermarkets and drug stores have them in stock...it's a common product and they are small enough to store a spare set
Dan from The Road Chose Me, ran a UV light and cartridge style filter set up in his Jeep on his three-year African trip. I saw his Jeep when it brought it back to the US a few years ago, it was a very compact system, and I think if it can survive Africa, I'm sure it would survive the rest of the world. Here is a link to his video on this. The video shows hows it's all hooked up and how it works. He has links to all the parts also. On anti viral filters Sawyer from the states make a very compact in line anti viral filter which is very small and inexpensive and a decent water pump should push the flow through easily enough. The size makes it quite vulnerable to sediment clogging unlike your lifesaver. It is easy to fit a separate larger in line sediment filter before the viral filter and these are cheap or be selective about the water you use. Like you I have depended on a lifesaver while on foot in the Sahara and Atlas, an amazing piece of kit. Just about to fit my diesel heater on my demountable, thanks for the advice. Jim M in the UK

Hi there, while travelling we are also using water from the sources / springs / wells / taps the locals are using. For consumption we boil it and use it for cooking / tea / coffee / soup. Another hint from India: drink a whisky in the evening - helps getting your stomach right. And beer / wine is also safe ;-)

In our case we fill up the freshwater tank and filter with a carbon activated filter (hose or via external 12V pump). And on the tab we have directly another Nano filter set up which filters microorganisms. Another RUclips provider (the road chose me) has what I think is one of the best water filtration and filtering set ups out there. His system which works off pause the water in past a filtration system into the tank. After it’s filtered he’ll pull it back through the filter to his used source. Has an ultraviolet light set up built into the filter and it doesn’t sound like he’s had any problems with it driving through Africa. Also I would caution about using unfiltered water for bathing and other things. A friend of mine former army ranger was training in Africa everything was fine until the beer party at the end of the train and they bought local ice. The ice was tainted they all got sick. Not to insult your inteligence, clearly your knowlege and experience makes you expert... Jerry can uses small pore size to trap virus. Hence the necessary pressure to push water through those small pores and still have adequate flow rate. Likewise, Grayl's virus filter is much harder to push as opposed to its bacteria + crypto filter. Essentially, you can filter virus w/o uv but as pore size decreases, so does flow rate.
I've been round and round with water filters for 3rd world travel for several years. There's no perfect fix that does all you want in the package you want. Cerametix has some great options to filter crypto, bacteria, heavy metals, pesticides, VOC's but not virus. Ceramic based filters are susceptible to physical shock so not sure how they would hold up in an off road vehicle situation. Hollow fiber fIlters are destroyed by freezing. I think what you want for undersink in a vehicle is pleated membrane with uv and operate it like a municipal waterplant which makes a batch of water and stores it as opposed to making it on demand. So if you have multiple tanks, designate one as the virus free tank. Draw from a second tank through the system and store for on demand use. The advantage is you can locate the uv in an easy to access and shock mounted location and verify its working every time you "make water" 40 liters at a time. For that matter, you could set up an on demand, undersink system but mount the uv as described above. The idea is if it fails, you want to know it immediately.
I recommend neutralizing the bleach once sterilized. A small amount of sodium thiosulphate crystals will do that. It would remove the chlorine taste so you could even drink it if needed. Dumping the bleach water could kill the bacteria that the sewage treatment uses, and of course doing it on the road could kill fish in the river.
Aloha, look into boat based systems that operate with reverse osmosis or distilled. It’s energy heavy but not delicate. The reason your can works is because of the pressure which enables you to force water through micron filters small enough to catch virons. It would be very difficult to build that kind of pressure into your water system. Here in east Hawaii we use the cartridge plus UV light system ( pretty much everyone is on a rain cachement system) because of rat lungworm disease.
What do you do with the wastewater? I bought a 130L watertank and mounted a 36L gray water tank under my camper box. It has an easy dump valve. I will have a tap inside and one under the camper box outside. And a 12volt shureflow with the least amount of liters per minute. Im really interested what you will find in terms of a filter. That is missing in my setup.
Hi, I am no expert on water purification but this is what I know about it, hope it helps, and if I am wrong I am sure others will correct my ignorance :-) water purification is divided as far as I know into: 1. water filtering. The amount of filtered elements depends on the desired flow, given pressure (up to a physical limit) and the filter filtration size, the smaller the filtration size the less flow you will be able to get at a given filter area at a given pressure. As under sink systems need to cope with higher flow rates at given pressure and the amount of filter space is limited the filtration is not as good as you get from your "can" , that has a very slow flow and high pressure. 2. sterilization (usually UVC). The UVC can be rugged but as someone already mentioned the UVC lamp looses efficiency over time, and you need to take it into account (again flow requirement vs the power of the lamp). 3. reverse osmosis The reverse osmosis systems are very rugged and do perfect purification, the problem the purified water is almost distilled water and you need to add back minerals and salts, there are systems that do that but I haven't seen one small enough for your use in a camper. So to make it short, it seems that if you want under sink system it is better to go with standard filter cartridges and a good UVC lamp. Additional factors to consider are: the availability of the filter cartridges and the UVC lamps, and do you need a filtration system for your normal sink tap or do you want to add additional tap for only drinking water (as the lifetime of filters is measured in time and gallons/liters of water it filtered). cheers
Leigh, AquaCera with the CeraMetix filter is what I use at home. This filter claims to have a 99% Chlorine reduction, I choose this filter because it claims to have 92% Fluoride reduction. AquaCera makes other filters but specifically only the CeraMetix filter has these claims.
Another awesome video. wrt the steripen i'd be wary of the effectiveness of the UV bulbs over time. UVC is the band of effective bactericidal wavelengths and this can deteriorate faster than the UVA, UVB and visible light emitted by the lamp. Should be good for thousands of hours but it's good to be aware that whilst it will continue to look like it's operating normally after this time the UVC emission could be far lower than when first bought.
the answer to your question is really simple, Your Jerry Can is NOT as good as the filter/light setup. You have had no issues yet, but that does not mean that the jerry can system is perfect. It also might be a case of the company over selling what it can really do, and since you cannot see it with your eyes you have to take their word for it.
Have a look at a company called purehydration, I really like their purification water bottles as they filter viruses unlike many others. They also do an ‘at home’ inline system think it’s £90
Definitely check out "The Road Chose Me." He has traveled all the way around Africa with his system. We just bought a defender 130 and I would like to know the brand of your 70 liter tank that you put under the rear seats. Thank you and have a good trip.
Could you not cut a tank hose connector onto the life saver Jerry can and connect a hose onto the outlet? You could even find a way to remove the hand pump and use that hole to connect incoming water to fill the can. The camper pump pressure might push it through the filter? They do a shower attachment with a hose for the Jerry can. So why not connect a hose and tap at the outlet? Lifesaver do inline water filters but they are large and expensive I think.

Only if we leave pressure inside. After filling our water bottles for the day I release the pressure then tighten again. No leaks. Although if we drive from low altitude to high then we will loosen the cap or pressure build up will cause it to leak through the tap.
The lifesaver uses air pressure to push water through the filter. A wonder if an external water pump between the faucet and lifesaver will suck it out or you could introduce the air pressure with your on-board tire inflation pump.
Not helpful for cleaning, but to remove bad plastic taste from tanks, put a litre of diet red cordial syrup in your tank. Let it sit for 12hrs then rinse. The sweeteners remove the bad taste.

there are UV-C light wish are LED based, couple with cartridge it will solve your problem.

Aloha, look into boat based systems that operate with reverse osmosis or distilled. It’s energy heavy but not delicate.
The reason your can works is because of the pressure which enables you to force water through micron filters small enough to catch virons. It would be very difficult to build that kind of pressure into your water system.
Here in east Hawaii we use the cartridge plus UV light system ( pretty much everyone is on a rain cachement system) because of rat lungworm disease.
What do you do with the wastewater?
I bought a 130L watertank and mounted a 36L gray water tank under my camper box. It has an easy dump valve. I will have a tap inside and one under the camper box outside. And a 12volt shureflow with the least amount of liters per minute.
Im really interested what you will find in terms of a filter. That is missing in my setup.

I am no expert on water purification but this is what I know about it, hope it helps, and if I am wrong I am sure others will correct my ignorance :-)
water purification is divided as far as I know into:
1. water filtering.
The amount of filtered elements depends on the desired flow, given pressure (up to a physical limit) and the filter filtration size, the smaller the filtration size the less flow you will be able to get at a given filter area at a given pressure.
As under sink systems need to cope with higher flow rates at given pressure and the amount of filter space is limited the filtration is not as good as you get from your
"can" , that has a very slow flow and high pressure.
2. sterilization (usually UVC).
The UVC can be rugged but as someone already mentioned the UVC lamp looses efficiency over time, and you need to take it into account (again flow requirement vs the power of the lamp).
3. reverse osmosis
The reverse osmosis systems are very rugged and do perfect purification, the problem the purified water is almost distilled water and you need to add back minerals and salts, there are systems that do that but I haven't seen one small enough for your use in a camper.
So to make it short, it seems that if you want under sink system it is better to go with standard filter cartridges and a good UVC lamp.
Additional factors to consider are:
the availability of the filter cartridges and the UVC lamps,
and do you need a filtration system for your normal sink tap or do you want to add additional tap for only drinking water (as the lifetime of filters is measured in time and gallons/liters of water it filtered).

Leigh, AquaCera with the CeraMetix filter is what I use at home. This filter claims to have a 99% Chlorine reduction, I choose this filter because it claims to have 92% Fluoride reduction. AquaCera makes other filters but specifically only the CeraMetix filter has these claims.

Another awesome video. wrt the steripen i'd be wary of the effectiveness of the UV bulbs over time. UVC is the band of effective bactericidal wavelengths and this can deteriorate faster than the UVA, UVB and visible light emitted by the lamp. Should be good for thousands of hours but it's good to be aware that whilst it will continue to look like it's operating normally after this time the UVC emission could be far lower than when first bought.
the answer to your question is really simple, Your Jerry Can is NOT as good as the filter/light setup. You have had no issues yet, but that does not mean that the jerry can system is perfect. It also might be a case of the company over selling what it can really do, and since you cannot see it with your eyes you have to take their word for it.

Could you not cut a tank hose connector onto the life saver Jerry can and connect a hose onto the outlet? You could even find a way to remove the hand pump and use that hole to connect incoming water to fill the can. The camper pump pressure might push it through the filter? They do a shower attachment with a hose for the Jerry can. So why not connect a hose and tap at the outlet? Lifesaver do inline water filters but they are large and expensive I think.

Both have some cool and unique ideas implemented, but both use filters plus UV. With your new power setup, that may be the best in the end, with the Lifesaver as your backup for when UV is out.
Does your lifesaver Jerry can leak mine leaks from tap
Only if we leave pressure inside. After filling our water bottles for the day I release the pressure then tighten again. No leaks.
Although if we drive from low altitude to high then we will loosen the cap or pressure build up will cause it to leak through the tap.

Too bad you could pre-filter with the Jerry can before it hits the tap.
The lifesaver uses air pressure to push water through the filter. A wonder if an external water pump between the faucet and lifesaver will suck it out or you could introduce the air pressure with your on-board tire inflation pump.
Not helpful for cleaning, but to remove bad plastic taste from tanks, put a litre of diet red cordial syrup in your tank. Let it sit for 12hrs then rinse. The sweeteners remove the bad taste.
