  • This is a breakfast and first steamup of my latest J Comby engine. It arrived from France and well packed in a box within a box. A ratty box within a box. Well, I think the ratty box is original to the engine as it fit perfectly and the lid is covered with small drawn renderings (in monotone) of different toys. Quite a surprise. As a plus, the chimney is very nice, the boiler bluing is very good, and the base is in pretty good shape. All the valves and fittings are very nice but I think it is missing a pressure guage (why two filler plugs?) The firebox is scorched and I was lucky I had another three-wick burner as the original that came with the engine needs work.
Well, the sightglass needs new sealing but the engine was ready to go and ran perfectly on air. The generator, which has no markings on it, will put out about 3 volts running along at a modest pace and nears six volts if I let the pressure build and then open the valve. The only hitch...whatever device, probably a light post, that was attached on the base behind the generator is missing, and... BAD ENGINEERING ALERT, the exhaust is routed under the chimney base and runs onto the tin base with no way to drain. I finagled a bit of tubing to do the draining, imperfectly, but better than it is.
So, enjoy the run. I did.
