- One inch scale model steam traction engine built by Chuck Tipton. This is not a kit, it was machined and constructed in my shop from raw materials using manual machines. The horn plates, tender box sides and spokes were laser cut by Virginia Laser in Abingdon VA. The name plate on the smoke box door was done on a CNC mill by Joe Pieczynski, Advanced Innovations Austin TX (check out his channel and watch him make this part)
That is one fine example of a professional machinist.

A piece of art Chuck, I like the old steam power. As a boy we used an case steam tractor for the thrashing machine flat belt drive everything seemed so big to this water boy. Thank you for sharing & Joe for the referral.

Hi Chuck, this was an insperation for me to try and build a modified myfordboy traction engine. My favorite part of the video is that you didn't rush thru the scenes. I was apprehensive the first time I tried to run it, I just knew I'd spent a year building a whatnot, when it kicked over I was so relieved.
Wow, beautiful work. The smoothness at low RPMs is amazing and not easy to accomplish. Excellent execution of a lengthy project.

Hey Chuck. That is one fine piece of work. Any craftsman would be proud to say they made that. Get yourself a nice walnut riser and a glass box to put over it. How many hours do you have invested in that? The detail is just beautiful. I have to ask if the steam pressure guage actually works ? Congratulations.
Hey Joe, Thanks for the kind words. Yes the gauge works 0-120psi range. I didn't actually make it though, it came from a model supplier in UK. As far as hours invested, I don't really ave a clue. I finished the boiler in Oct. 2015.

Bravo! Just beautiful. I am trying to finish a Minnie traction engine which is also 1 inch scale. The original builder made everything from raw stock as well. Struggling with just a few of the bits that go into the model gives me an appreciation of the extreme skill and determination you have deployed to make this masterpiece and get it to run. Thank you for sharing the video which is an additional motivation for me to raise my game and get Minnie making smoke.

Chuck Tipton The model is mostly complete, boiler, wheels, valve gear etc & looks finished, but there are many small bits that are not complete, piston, piston rod, blower valve & exhaust installation, throttle lever, bracket, gauges,... Lots of little stuff that doesn't make for interesting video & I am a beginner in many aspects of this work such that my learning & fumbling are not so interesting to experts & not so useful to folk who are also learning. I doubt whether I could do this with out what I am learning off folk who have the skills I don't have & who share them via RUclips. If I can complete it or become faster & more useful with my lathe & mill I will post some stuff then. Regards,

Is the boiler for real with tubes and a firebox? You guys that work with miniatures are amazing, I could never build something with a magnifying glass and tweezers.
Hey Brian, Thanks for the question. The boiler is made of copper and silver soldered. I tested it to 130 psi but the safety valve is currently see at 40 psi. It has two 3/4" fire tubes with butane gas burners. It just takes a few minutes to boil up a head of steam. I plan on making another video of the engine running on steam and driving around. I'm waiting on the weather, it was in the 20's here last night.
Yes a lot of tiny stuff, I use an optivisor and needle nose pliers. LOL

So if you decide to do another would you consider doing a series so that us amateurs can follow along and perhaps attempt to follow your lead and make something in our shops that isn't an accessory for our lathe or milling machine, lol? in all seriousness I would love to attempt something like this but not without guidance, and humbly so, something a bit simpler. Thanks for your comment. I didn't think I could do it myself until I got into it. I'm not a machinist, I'm a luthier used to working in wood. I got into the machinist stuff to enhance my guitar business. So get yourself a set of drawings and go for it.
I'm an airline pilot, so certainly outside of my area of expertise. That said I would never turn away from a challenge..... a set of drawings it is then, we'll see how it goes; would you suggest a source for the drawings. Cheers.
If you like the English style engine go to Mazitrak website, they're in UK and were very helpful to me. If you do a google search for traction engine plans there are a couple places you can download plans for a US style Case engine. I have a set of those drawings but decided to do the English Burrell engine instead.

A beautiful model Chuck. I'm sure you're proud of it. Makes me embarrassed to say that I've been working at "Minnie" , on and off, for over 40 years and two different countries. I'm now determined to try and get her finished before I leave this tormented world. "Minnie" is in the same 1" scale so would probably emerge looking very similar to your creation. Have you ever "steamed" your engine or is it strictly on compressed air? I hope to fire mine using propane or something similar at least to see if the boiler works but it'll probably turn into an air engine eventually. Regards from Chatham in Canada's banana belt.
I've run it on steam several times, but didn't shoot any video of it. I use propane butane mix made for camping stoves.

Yes sir it is rubber, I ordered a roll of it from Maxitrak UK. Just cut the length specified in the drawings, glue the ends with thick CA glue and bond to the rims with epoxy. Thanks for the question.

Yes sir, it has two Accucraft poker burners fueled with Butane. As soon as the weather gives us a break I'm going to shoot another video so keep checking. Thanks

I've always wanted to buy a model steam engine this size but I've been reluctant to because I don't have any experience with steam engines and have little knowledge about them, always been fascinated with them though. How much would a traction engine this size cost?
Look at Mamod, pretty straight forward to use, great fun and you can buy one used for around £100 UK.

do those safety valves on the cylinder, do they work ?
Yes they do work. One is set at 50psi. the other is set at a little over that for redundancy. They are manufactured units I bought and modified the outward appearance to look more realistic. The spring and pressure arm on top is strictly for looks. Look closely at the top of the valves and you will see a circle of tiny vent holes. I milled little dimples in the center of each one and turned the crowns from brass. Thanks for the question.
Could I enquire about the thread size of your whistle valve and where you were able to get it from?
It's 1/4 40 I bought the whistle from Macc Models, in England.
