Omg Kevin, that model is impressive, it is (literally) like having a real tractor but in a reduced size keeping all the functionality of it. You must feel very lucky, not everyone has one of these. Nice video and thanks for sharing.
I use butane in A4 cartridges usually used for stoves. I have an adapter that fits onto the A4 and fills the Markie tank, which is a standard model steam gas fitting.
I know it's a bit late to be giving these tips, but ... Camera work: You can get video cameras (720p) that are mounted in sunglasses complete with mic sound pickup. I've used a pair in some of my steam model videos. You can even get GoPro copies for a fraction of the price that can record in 1080p for a couple of hours. It doesn't take much ingenuity to mount one (complete with waterproof case) onto a headband scavenged from a cheap head lamp. Steering: For one thing you now have *2* free hands. For another you could take a thin (bamboo) stick and add a couple of prongs to the end so you can turn the steering wheel from a distance in the same way you could with the Mamod range of cars and vehicles based on the same chassis. btw; I have the same model of Markie. Not steamed yet, but it shouldn't be long now!
a man of many parts Thanks for the comment, and the tips. Unfortunately it was 8 years ago (before I had a smart phone) and was using pocket cameras with virtually no image stabilization. If I had to redo it today, it would be very different 🙂. But thanks anyway.

Lovely engine and great video, thank you! Just one question, does the safety valve on top of the water gauge vent steam without having the regulators open? I have a Markie showmans engine and the safety valves on top of the steam cylinder only work once both the regulators are open which wouldn't stop the boiler from over pressuring!
Richy G Thanks for the kind comment. Regarding the safety valves. I agree with you the the safeties on the steam chest will only activate when the regulators are open, and the safety on the water gauge should activate any time the boiler over-pressurizes. However I have never observed any of the safety valves open since I usually run the engine as soon as pressure builds. I can’t remember ever going above 60psi. I believe the safeties open at around 100psi.
The tap water in my area is quite soft, so I use that. You can (with difficulty) drain the water from the boiler, so I do that from time to time to get rid of the mineral buildup. I have not tried to pull myself with this engine. It could probably be done under carefully controlled conditions, but I doubt it will pull you around the park if that's what you are thinking. If I ever do it, I'll make a video. :)
I may be a bit late in responding to this, but the addition of dissolved citric acid crystals to hot water (1 heaped teaspoon/gallon) every now and then can remove all of the built up 'furring' and clean out the boiler & pipes. It's so harmless to pure metals that I use it in my kettles and coffee machines. Just rinse those out before reuse as they leave a mild aftertaste.
Very nice engine! Filling it with water is a lot easier with a syringe. beautiful engine. One can expect to spend around two hundred dollars for a miniature so how much do these 1" cost? Very impressive! Get steamed and steam on Kevin.
+nightlightabcd Thanks! There is no opening in the Markie boilers to inject water via syringe... need to pump it in. Similarly, there is no way to get water out of the boiler either, hence my other video on adding a blow-down valve.Current prices are around 3,000 GBP.
You're right, they are a little larger than a 1" Minnie for example. But to be honest they are not a scale model of anything - rather a freelance design that resembles a traction engine, so 1/10th or 1/12 "scale" doesn't really mean much anyway. @@kevininasia Unfortunately I would have to replace the drive gears to fit one. Fortunately there's a cheaper and better option in a small electric pump that could be mounted on a trailer along with a water reservoir, much larger gas canister, batteries and even a seat.
With a good head of steam, smooth hard ground and a low-friction trailer, it will probably pull an adult. A child, certainly. Even my DR Mercer will pull a child. Thanks for the comment.

it depends on the trailer and the surface you are driving on. With smooth steel wheels on a hard floor, certainly. With pneumatic tyres on grass.... I doubt it. I haven't built a trailer to try it.
I had a Markie and was rather unimpressed with workmanship.Isaved up and sold a guitar to buy the kit,and it needed a lot of work to get it together with very basic instructions,Not good for £2500!! It cant pull much as its not super heated steam as I found out after so I sold !!!
dont try bud,I had one and couldnt pull me and Im only 9 stone.Yours looks nice, much better than the kit I bought a couple of years ago for £2300.Was disappointed with some of the engineering etc,lots of parts didnt fit big time and things like the firebox door was crooked!! I sold it on and now Ive ordered a Maxitrak Allcin 3/4" that can pull 12 stone!!
Markie engines look superb, However their performance in comparison, leaves a lot to be desired. I got rid of both my Markie for that reason alone. Can't see why you are running it like a racing car either.. They never ran at 100 miles an hour in real life.

You can buy them either coal, gas, or alcohol fired. This one is gas (butane).
Strictly speaking, the Markies are 1:10 scale, not 1" (1:12). That puts them closer to 1 & 1/8" (to the foot) scale and therefore a little larger.

Its just a piece of brass tube, pressed square on one end so that it slips over the handle of the water pump. Embarrassingly low-tech. :)
