Marklin 4097/6 with generator - electrical heating element fixed
Quick take. this was a great repair project and it now produces up to 6 volts of power.
I received this engine a few weeks ago. The pressure gauge was N/G, the sightglass leaked, the generator wouldn't generate, and the heater would not work and registered as an open circuit.
So, I fixed the sightglass and generator to function as they should, replaced the bad pressure gauge with a plug, and finagled the heater back into working. If anyone has a reasonably priced original pressure gauge I'd love to buy it - or maybe trade for it.
As it tuns out someone, long ago, dribbled water down the side of the boiler and onto the heater. Bad engineering from the same folks who gave us modern rocketry...

Marklin 4097/6 on air with working dynamo
Просмотров 77Месяц назад
The dynamo on this Marklin 4097/6 did not seem to produce any voltage. I could tell the magnets still had 'power' so something else was up. I was able to see that the contact to the armature was not contacting the way it should. I could see it was an easy adjustment so I gave it a shot. I hooked up the multimeter to the dynamo posts, turned on the air, and it took off and produced up to almost ...
Marklin 4097/6 first run - on air
Просмотров 117Месяц назад
This Marklin 4097/6 just came in. I runs well and a bit noisy on air. Unfortunately, the dynamo produced no electricity. The pressure gauge is nasty and off to the side awaiting work. This is an electrically heated engine, but it reads no resistance. I need to take it apart and see exactly what needs to be done - it is a bit odd in that there is some solid-looking kind of round heater attached ...
Elektro - another one runs on replacement heater
Просмотров 93Месяц назад
This Elektro, a 100 year-old engine, came without a heater, so I added one of the apropos tube heaters. Supposed to be 380 watts, I think it is running at about 200 watts or so. Not good enough to run for so much blow-by. So, I grooved the piston, added a couple of tiny holes to thread the twisted teflon tape into the groove, stuffed it into the cylinder. I also grooved the slide valve a bit wi...
J Comby 'Big' engine with generator - first steamup
Просмотров 4893 месяца назад
This is a breakfast and first steamup of my latest J Comby engine. It arrived from France and well packed in a box within a box. A ratty box within a box. Well, I think the ratty box is original to the engine as it fit perfectly and the lid is covered with small drawn renderings (in monotone) of different toys. Quite a surprise. As a plus, the chimney is very nice, the boiler bluing is very goo...
PM Research #5 - first steamup
Просмотров 1473 месяца назад
I've wanted one of these PM5's for a while. I even asked a PM rep if they would ever offer the #5 as an already machined kit. Not happening, at least not now. So, this one showed up along with 3 Weeden accessories and an EP buffing wheel. It came today and the engine (I had a few qualms) looked fine. Some oil and a compressor and it ran pretty smoothly. I then ran it on air for a couple hours a...
Empire B30 - Late morning steamup
Просмотров 214 месяца назад
This Empire B30 is an early one. The flywheel is solid, there is no shield over the plug-in prongs, and the base is embossed "1" on the bottom. It came with a burned-out heater so I updated it with two 200 watt cartridge heaters. It warms up quickly and runs like a champ. A good example of an engine that is around 100 tears old. The paint is not perfect but in pretty good shape. In my opinion i...
Empire B43 Steam Engine with Injector pump working
Просмотров 274 месяца назад
This is a breakfast run of my Empire B43 with injector pump. The pump was jammed and would not move up or down but after several hours of pulling and pushing I had a working pump....and a messed up thumb. Oh well, it all works now. As you can see, it takes about 40 or 50 pumps per ounce and it does work smoothly. Overall, you can get an endless run with the injector pump.
Jensen 10 Powerplant - morning run for fun
Просмотров 2484 месяца назад
This is my Jensen 10 powerplant (early 1950's) out for a morning run. As you can see, it runs quite well. I did run the psi above one atmosphere and it really ripped right along at a good pace, dropping down to 1/2 atmo and staying there. I presume that is the balancing point where the heater blanket energy output is equal to the steam energy being used to run the engine and generator. Oh yes, ...
Ryder Steam Engine - first steamup
Просмотров 1434 месяца назад
The first official steamup of my Ryder engine, produced around 1875. I haven't cleaned up the boiler yet, but after a small test I can see it will be worthwhile. I used pencil erasers, fussed to get them to fit, added 6ozs of water, loaded the MAMOD burner with a 90% grain alcohol and water mix, lit it up, waited a few minutes, and with a nudge on the flywheel it was go time. A smooth and quiet...
Bowman w/throttle - first steamup
Просмотров 1384 месяца назад
Purchased over EBAY, this Bowman attracted my attention because it has both a throttle and a steam oil reservoir. I have a Bowman twin, but I'd like to replace it some day with a twin with throttle and reservoir. I'm using a MAMOD burner and grain alcohol to power it. Runs well and is really fast if you let it go full throttle.
Ryder Steam Engine circa 1875 - first run on air
Просмотров 1304 месяца назад
Well, here it is. This Ryder was first pictured in an 1875 catalog ad and now, a long time later, I have one. Might have overpaid, but it is a reasonably clean example. It runs pretty well on air - I did have to add a spring for the trunion. More tomorrow.
Empire B32 - new arrival, first run
Просмотров 3324 месяца назад
This Empire B32, a simple overtype, arrived on a battered box. It was well packed so there were no problems related to the mishandling. It was very stiff but oil took care of that. It turns well one way but not the other and I think there is a slight kink in the valve rod. I'll get to that later on. I checked the resistance and it measured around 25 ohms. Hot Stuff! Six ounces of water, a plug ...
Empire B43 with Injector Pump - morning run for fun
Просмотров 894 месяца назад
This Empire B43, produced from 1937 thru 1940, is the B43 with an injector pump. After WW2 they did not resume production of this 'pumper' engine so it is a pretty rare variant. FYI, this engine is heated by two 200 watt cartridge heaters. Runs well and NOW the pumper works. When received the pump was stuck in the down position. After seeing a video of the pumper working I went hard-core on thi...
Bing clone of Weeden 14 - late morning run
Просмотров 2315 месяцев назад
A late morning run of my Bing clone of a Weeden 14. I think it is running pretty well, the throttle works, and the whistle has a pleasant hi-pitched tone. The burner is made from a candy tin with insulation (spun glass?) to soak up the grain alcohol and a fine mesh SS screen (from a flat screen used to cover a frying pan and stop spatter) above it. When looking down at the burner top you see th...

Marklin 4117-8 Early Afternoon Run For Fun
Excellent repairs. It runs well. Many congratulations.
My new to me 90 arrived today. time to clean up! Sans only a chimney and that'll be nxt when I find one. Yours is running fantastic!!!! :)
Awesome #10!
A Beautiful Weeden! The #665 and ran from 1927 to 1940.
Right you are - I had it correct in an earlier video. It was a brain hiccup.
Beautiful big old Comby. - Cheers JIm
Love those PMR vertical boilers. Your No. 5 coke bottle engine would pair up very nicely with this boiler 😀
Amen!
Nice runner, just go easy with that Mamod vapourising burner if you have any lead fittings on the engine. I fired my very similar Weeden 14 with the same burner & learned the hard way by melting the lead pulley as the flames licked up around the side of the boiler due to the omission of the usual enclosed firebox.
Lovely PMR engine Wayne!!!
Cool whistle 👍👍👍
Nice little engine
very nice, a bit jealous!
Thats cool as fuck
Really interesting.Thanks for showing.
Great engines. Congrats on owning one. A bit of a buff and it will look great 👍
Congratulations! I know you been trying to get it pumping for a long time!
very nice engine!
Are you woe is me on the forum
Nope.....komet163b.....
I almost bought that one, then it was gone - glad you got it. Runs and looks great!
The repairs (minor) went well. It runs very well at a slow speed when I use my 'dimmer switch' power reducer. That also increases the run time which is fairly short as the boiler holds less than the B31 boiler.
nicely done ;-)
Great fixup and video. The heater job is awesome I have a similar with the same similar syle engine.
Just ran mine for the first time today, worked great!
Love the look of the solid flywheel on these early engines. Are you going to fix the leaking sns site glass? Thanks for showing and good luck.
Thanks for the nice comment. I've since come to the conclusion that the sight glass and fittings are good, but the end cap has a leak, looking from the front, from the 2 o'clock thru at least the 6 o'clock position. I will try soldering. I have a vacuum pump and I'm thinking of applying a mild vacuum to the boiler when doing the soldering (after a good clean up) to draw the solder in to plug the holes for good.
pretty. I have one similar. What's the electric heater? I wonder if it would work in mine. It looks like it works well.
Good job fixing this one up, runs smooth.
Beautiful engine, thanks for showing
Where do u buy these? I'd like to buy one of them.
On EBAY or other auction houses thru Live Auctioneer.
Great sounding whistle!
DESIREE DE LOS SANTOS MATO
Great engine, looks to be in very nice condition.
Hi Wayne. We “chatted” briefly on the Unofficial Mamod forum. Your Jensen 10 looks wonderful - it’s a great engine. Loved seeing it run! Best, Erie in Seattle.
👍👍
Excellent job with the heater! She runs great!
Nice engine. Did you remove the flywheel? I need to disassemble one and can't tell if its pinned to the crankshaft.
No, I have never taken the flywheel off. I do see there is a screw so that must hold it on. I recommend applying WD40 on the screw and flywheel/axle area before trying to remove it. You will have to do something about the piston and valve connecting rods beforehand.
Many thanks. It does look like a small Philips head so must be a replacement.
i think this runs better than the bing 😂😂😂
Where did you find a replacement chimney?
www.ebay.de/str/glueckskind101. It cost, price+shipping, $50+. The chimneys are one of the first parts to be lost and they are hard to find at a reasonable price because some steamers HOARD them. By the dozens, and I've seen the pics. Otherwise, pretty damn clean, I think.
@@waynewheaton6244 Thanks for the info. I'm looking into buying one for sale. It's missing the chimney but looks in ok shape. How much do you think is a reasonable price for a fair condition 125-4?
Fair condition implies ok but with multiple issues. This one is very clean. In comic book language it is very fine plus. I think mine would bring $150+.
It's a beauty! Love those riveted boilers! Nice job with the wiring.
This one runs nicely. Seems in very great shape too. Looks almost new!
Nice! Thanks for sharing! 😃
Nice score, Wayne! You don't often see steam engines with dual flywheels, and that stack is major!
What electronic banner do use for the engine
The electronic banner is an 'incandescent bulb' dimmer and outlets in an electrical box. Good up to 600 watts, it is my go-to when running electrically heated engines, especially those without a throttle.
you got it going good. great job. the bores on these engines are huge i think they are underpowered
Thanks for the video, Wayne! Must be a good engine, seeing how slow it was able to go, and keep running. Do you think it ran out of steam, or maybe the Teflon rings failed or seized up? A really neat engine anyway!
I like this little engine, looks odd with that pump thingy but I like that!
lookin good
Hard to believe this guy is running, superb job Wayne!!
Hard to believe this guy is running, superb job Wayne!!
Runs extremely smooth and not a single hiccup. What was that valve you touched is that the throttle control or steam inlet
I got ya Wayne beautiful just beautiful I’m impressed
Very nice congrats on getting it running and figuring out the wiring
nice little engine, I have one too - thanks for the video!
