What a BEAST! No silly electronics, no frills, raw power tractor. These were the days when you had to pay attention to everything and not rely on gadgets to alert you to inconsistencies!
You need to come back to the area, we have several professional farmers in the area that are all excellent operators. The farm shown here has been around a very long time and are legends in the farming community. The operator of the 8970 in the video is a really nice guy - everyone working at this farm are all hard working talented people, we are glad they’re in our community!
I have wanted to feature an 8970 for a long time. Josh did a great job filming this one. They are cool tractors. Maybe almost as good as a Steiger 400 😁👍
70 series was the best Deere 4wd , and the 8970 takes the cake. I have an 8770 I bought new in '96, and probably will be buried with it as a head stone.
Electronic fuel injection issues from what I understand was the fuel injection system was partially built by John Deere and then the second part was built by Cummings. Listening to the people on Combine Forum , when there were problems John Deere would blame Cummings and coming so blame John Deere and you couldn't get anything fixed. Of course this would have only been relative to the 8970.
Just finished the spring tillage in my garden boxes. Used right and left hands attached to a hoe and rake to plant squash , tomatoes, beans, basil and celery on about .0025 of an acre.
THANK YOU JASON FOR THIS VIDEO THATS COVERING ALOT OF GROUND QUICKLY AHEAD OF PLANTING ITS ALWAYS INTERESTING TO FIND OUT THE ORGINAL PRICE TAG OF THESE TRACTORS OR EQUIPMENT WHEN THEY WERE NEW
When putting a new tire on where there's duels, you always install the new tire on the inside. That applies to trucks, tractors, etc. It's easier on the bearings of the vehicle.
Yes the 855 cu inch Cummins NT and later N14 were tough engines, reliable and reasonable to run and overhaul, but only went u to 425 H.P. People wanted higher H.P.
9 meters wide (30 feet) and 10 km/h (6mph) , is 9 hectares/h which is 22.5 acres/h. not 10 as you said in this video. I thought that sounded insanely pathetic for that tillage team. and I was correct to think so as it wasn't correct.
@@Hermiwalle I can only report what the farmer tells me. This 8050 can run 10 mph but with all the rocks in New York 6 mph is the speed they find works best.
@@billrockefeller4192 thanks I'm still Old school moldboard but am looking at expanding in the next few years, we are in an area where 200 acres is a big farm so I would be looking at a scale down version
More gears (if it's a good strong transmission) is always better. The new cv transmissions are adjustable at 1/10 of a mph. ....you don't have to lug the engine to pull the implement to fast or over rev the engine to get the ground speed from to low a gear (like when 5th is to slow but 6th us to fast) the more gears, the less of a jump between any two and the better you can match engine rpm to ground speed. It makes a HUGE difference in diesel consumption, time in the field, and machine wear

@@GOLTURBO555I wish I owned the farm. Just a neighbor who’s proud of our agriculture community here!
My favorite JD tractor of them all, thanks for featuring. Never have seen one in my area of KS, lot of the smaller 8560-8770 around here though
The 8970 is our biggest tractor on my Uncles farm. We use it for everything. We also have a 8770. Both are awesome tractors!!
I always have wanted an 8970, great looking, reliable and powerful tractors. Great video as always!

This setup gets the job done😁💪 tillage videos are always great, thank you for sharing👍👍

I run an 8560 for my tillage tractor. The 60 and 70 series are my favourite John Deere articulates
Jason, thank you very much for taking the time to bring us this video. I really enjoyed watching this. 🙂
Thank you for watching. The 8970 has long been on my wish list to find and highlight. It’s a cool tractor from the 90’s.

My favorite series of John Deere tractors
We had a 95 8970 on 42” triples
A couple of those will get the job done fast. Looks like that team does a great job.
power on the land
Great tractor. The ultimate Deere in 1993.
Oh man this brings backs memories, i remember when 4 of these showed up on the farm in 1995.
Wonderful videos Farming equipment. thank you!! I can't stop watching 👍👍👍👍

Great looking setup. Those were cool some cool looking benders.

That's logic to anyone who ist familiar with the lever principles!
There is still a few of us that dont use auto steer😊
Nice video, thanks Jason you are the best
I'd love to see what auto steer would do for my John Deere A.
@@anthonyhengst2908 👍😂
Nice
Are you at Rockefeller farms in Phelps Ny?
Great tillage video and this JD looks so cool with those big duals on it. I'd sure like to drive that set up. GO BTP 👍🏻 💪.
Another great video, thanks!
Nice set-up 👍👍👍
Getting it done...
Hello everyone great equipement and tractor i love old us equipement
This one looks great on those metric tires. Most of them we ever see around here have the narrower tires on them.
Doesn't duals mean an enormous stress for the axles and the axle bearings?! And even more so triples!
John Deere would have been smart to put 855 Cummins engines in all there 4 wheel drive tractors.

Hi 👋 from Dexter🏠Missouri
Beast of a machine.
Super💯video
It's nice to see a 28-31 year old tractor still working
Hello! Milestone Green tractor, Cummins powered!
Good video.
My neighbor had one of those, nice tractor 👍👍. Good video Jason.
Very nice. Great tractor.
Howdy bigtractorpower
That is one cool tractor. Have a 1/64 scale version.
220gal fuel tank... Ugh. My head hurts when I fill up the 12gal tank on my compact tractor and that thing sips fuel!
Awesome jd i like it
The SoundGard II 4wds are cool ones in my book.
Would this be more powerful than the new big John Deere and which would be a better machine thanks.
Hard to believe that the biggest 4WD then, was only 10 hp bigger than the smallest 9R these days,
And 10 less than the largest 8R now. Tractors have grown allot in the past 30 years.
Maybe depending on field size, 6mph x 30' more like 20 acres an hour?
Small fields with lots of turning around and road time in between. Probably closer to 20 acres per hour in a large field.
love these older JD 4wd tractors. Not a fan of the newer looking ones
Good work

The farmer told me he covering 10 acres an hour. The fields are not large in NY. There is allot of transport time.
@@bigtractorpower aha, depends how you look at it.

Multiple passes or single? How does it perform on sod!?
Single pass before the John Deere 1790 bean planter. We don't use the set up on sod, don't think it would do a very good job that way.

Why would you need 24 forward and 6 reverse gears in a tractor sounds way over calcauted to me

Beautiful tractor, no around me owns one though.
The farms in our area aren't nearly big enough
Why such a big tractor for such a small tool?
Use what you have at your disposal. Work the tractor that you are not using instead of letting it sit in a barn
