    You don't need to shut down the computer before plugging or unplugging the cable or drive. The only thing you need to (well, SHOULD) do is eject the hard drive from the device ejection icon before unplugging the drive.

    P8P67 Deluxe. The green port in this vid is a powered port. It carries 12v with the proper cable and supported device.

    @iRouRoui may seem that way because most external drive up to this point were always slower than internal. eSATA is just as fast. =)

    After pulling up notes and recalling my experience with this,......jcvjcvjcvjcv is RIGHT. I recall after completing this video, i then noticed that my drive actually was not spinning up, rather i was feeling vibration from the upper cooling fan. Those mentioned contacts 12/13 are missing and Asus mislead users of this board about the eSATAp port they provided. In small print somewhere, they state that only 5v is provided. A notebook HDD or SSD will power just fine.

    Yeah, shame on Asus.
    For most people it's not a big problem. 3.5" external HDD's come with their own power brick. 2.5" HDD's can be powered with the 5V eSataP port.
    It's only a shame spare 3.5" HDD's can't be powered by that port.
    There are brackets available for desktop PC's to make your own 12V eSataP port. Delock 61824 for example.
    Thank you for pulling up your notes ;)

    esata is 0 volts power, not 5 volts. power is not supplied by the esata interface.

    So is eSATAp cable the best kind to connect an exterior hard drive (from one laptop computer, to a working laptop computer, also? In order to view and edit or format what's in the exterior hard drive?

    Could you use this to power a (SATA) 5.25in optical drive?
    (I sacrificed my DVD drive to another HDD but would like to read CD/DVD ROMs without having to rip an image on my laptop)

    • @obfuscated3090
      @obfuscated3090 5 лет назад +1

      External DVD drives are power hungry and don't have a lot of bandwidth so I would not power one from the notebook unless it was designed for that. External USB 5.25" enclosures are cheap and because quality of DVD drives has declined I use a good 5.25" drive in one powered by its own brick. I've burned bootable live CDs/DVDs since around 2000 for whatever that's worth.

    so in theory i can run a IDE PATA old Hard disk using a eSATApD cable so it givs 12v energy.. but most notebooks have only eSATAp (not dual 5v 12v).. ASLO
    i found that only cables have notebook conector for 2.5 hdd. so i have to add a little PCB adapter from 2.5 to IDE. Am i right ?

    If I look at 6:10 in your video it shows clear plastic on what is then the bottom of the port. If there was a 12 V connection in that port it should be there.
    Or otherwise you have some 3.5" that runs without 12V :)
    Google 'EUHP' On the Asus connector pin 12 and 13 are missing. Without them no 12 Volt.

    I have this computer I bought used with this port, so I bought a cable to see if I could test some old harddrives to see if there working. I just don't know if I need a jumper to get the harddrive to work or not. I'm not sure if this works similar to an external drive without the extra board to get it to boot when power is applied to it.

    And what cable would that be? I have a P8P67 EVO and also have the green powered eSata port. But it does not have contacts to the far sides of the connector, where +12 is normally supplied with eSataP
    Or do you have a 3.5" drive that doesn't use 12 V?

    What if you connect Hard drive enclosures with eSata interface. Will it see each drive separately or only as one volume? Have you ever tried that?
    I am just looking for hotswap solutions for multiple drives More than 20 in one computer. so motherboards do not support that unless you put expander and raid controller - which will requiore server board. TOO EXPENSIVE.

      You can run a temporary OD with a separate hard drive and if you take the hard drive out of an external hard drive it will work. Not with the old hard drives with all the pins, use the fewer shaped like the he did that is how hard drives are now one long l piece and it cuts off and it continues with a small l shape tip. I have only tried this with laptop/notebook because I am using an elite book pro with a docking station, not a think pad. It is 2011 so it is strange as he says they stopped and it really stopped in 2005 but would add the HP Elite book pro and ThinkPad they still add them on just like some docking stations and computers that come ith that old purple printer 30 male pins. It is USB he hs took that place of that for printers. Lan lines are always are on any computer because you may want a direct connection and you ae getting able to run multiple screens and you will use USB 3.0 with taking off Aero on a window so you can get 5gbps. I know a little bit because I am learning to salvage computers and test them and put them back on the consumer market. Refurbishing them. I make double triple and made six and 7 times my money. I buy a computer for parts and buying or finding parts cheaper at second-hand stores and computer stores the last place would be eBay I get good deals. I hope this answers your question. There is a way without taking the external hard drive but I have not messed with that one yet.. Also, you need the OS in a DVD-Rom-drive to run while you are using e-SATAp. If you use an external it won't recognize the, in Bios because you can't boot up wit them they have no OS it just is a Data recovery for your system. If you want to swap with 2.5 and 3.5 hard drives get a docking station that is 60 or more and it holds about 4 hard drives that are the max I have seen. but you can buy a second one.

      +Austin Chiang I need SATA or eSATA, cause usb and other connection do not support S.M.A.R.T. Test and Linux does not see those as separate drives

    • @austinchiang1962
      @austinchiang1962 8 лет назад

      Try putting your hard drive as an external hardrive and use the USB cable because all u have to do is buy the kit to transform your internal hard-drive into a external drive. Or, try Startechs multi-port hard drive ports you can put 2.5 hard-drives from a laptop and a 3.5 from a PC hard-drive it has four ports total and it does not matter where you put them in and the hard-drive hub uses a 3.0 USB with the two different ends and comes with software if you need other drivers or you can always download them from the site. That is a way you can see all your drives and swap information to one drive to another. Also, check if you reformatted the hard-drive or else you won't see it if you don't reformat it. That is as far as I can help. I don't really mess with Linux and I don't know what you want to test but you said you don't see it so try that out and continue to research. Chiang over and out. Oh, and check your Bios.

      +Austin Chiang i dont think you are even reading my replies. WHy bother responding than... USB port does not support S.M.A.R.T. - PERIOD

    • @austinchiang1962
      @austinchiang1962 8 лет назад

      I was responding to what you said you can't see your hard drives. So, it brought to mind it could be you did not reformat your disc if you want to start from scratch and also if it is new. When you format a hard drive you will see your drive. I also mentioned StarTech 4 port hub because yu wanted to do some swapping. You can do that with StarTech 4 Bay eSATA USB 3.0 to SATA Hard Drive Docking Station. That was it I was hoping that could have helped you be able to see your hard drives. I am reading your post. I don't know you and for you to make assumptions and be sarcastic is very rude. I tried to help with my limited insight. You did not have too answer me back the first time if my post to begin with did not serve your need. You could have not answered me at all, or you could have simply answered and said thanks for the input but that doesn't help me or you don't understand my question. This is what our country is coming too. You are from the states right? Well, there was a friendliness that is now gone and people will fight about the tiniest stupid things. I witnessed grown men Black, White, Asian, and Hispanic men fight over whose TV day it was and it turned into a riot and we were on lockdown for a week. If that was worked out in a civil manner we could have enjoyed the TV and and not be n lock down having to stay bed ridden on our bunks. Anyway I know this is irrelevant to your question I was trying to help and I address your question on not seeing your drivers. I will not respond per it is final weekend for me and church tomorrow and I am interrupted by these negative remarks.

    This is such a confusing standard with a confusing naming scheme that differs from manufacturer to manufacturer. To be able to use eSATA with a 3.5 inch HDD you'll need a port that can output 12 volts. Don't assume that eSATAp means a port can provide 12V for a full size 3.5 inch HDD. In some cases it does but in some cases it doesn't and you would need a eSATApd port instead. No wonder a lot of bad reviews are left on banggood for their esata cable because it wouldn't work for a lot of customers with their 3.5 drive on a 5V port. tip: most laptop eSATA ports are only 5v so you won't be able to connect 3.5 inch drives with a cable like showed in this video. 5V is only enough for small 2.5 inch laptop HDDs and SSDs.
