Okay, enough about Corndog. How many keyboard players other than Jan Hammer could solo on synthesizer on a mid-tempo Latin-jazz type tune like this and make it work? There were other guys soloing on synth in those days-like Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul, George Duke-but no one did it like Hammer, whether it was with Mahavishnu Orchestra or on this particular album "Spectrum". There's probably not a rock or metal band from the 1970s and 80s that didn't listen to "Spectrum". Tommy Bolin got his gig with Deep Purple on the basis of his playing on this album. Listen to Hammer and Bolin on "Quadrant 4" and "Taurean Matador" from "Spectrum".
I agree that Jan Hammer was an equal to Chick, Herbie, and Zawinul. It's not just his synth playing. His piano and Rhodes stuff is amazing. There's a tune called Tergiversation on an Elvin Jones record that features Jan and Chick on Rhodes. The harmonic stuff and interplay is on the highest level.
Bought this on vinyl in the mid 1980s when i was 18. Fantastic. You really appreciate such supreme performance in your 50s. Its "the shits" as we say in the UK.
... Cobham's first solo effort... FLAWLESS. And let's not forget the one, the only, Ron Carter on bass here. EXCELLENT! I saw Billy Cobham 5 times between 1973 and 1975... incredible. All but one in intimate settings. Very hard to do today. SIGH.
Corndogs aside, this song absolutely rocks my socks off, the transition from that beautiful piano opening to the swanky jazz music makes me feel like I'm just casually walking through a small but busy street with shops in every corner and the other quirky townsfolk doing their own thing
I didn´t understand ´til these days why this absolute genius piece had always been rated behind "Stratus" and "Red Baron". It´s totally the same level: It truly can make one´s days!
Wow…if it weren’t for the synth solo, I would have though this was CTI-era Deodato. Of course, Cobham was a majoecontributor to Deodato’s first couple of CTI-albums (along with Ron Carter and John Tropea) so of course there was some cross-pollination. Hell of a solo by Jan Hammer.
DJ Bolanis How do people know about that website? I get that it's just a loop of a snippet of this song but what is corndogoncorndog from? A show or movie?
Something I'm trying to figure out myself. I was able to find the song simply from a reddit post. But the origins or creator of the website is unknown to me.
TheGenreman you've got a good ear! billy cobham was the drummer on deodato's 1973 album prelude which featured the superhit also sprach zarathustra. le lis also features bassist ron carter & guitarist john tropea whom both played together with billy cobham on deodato's prelude album (which came out the same year as billy cobham's spectrum).
Came from corn dog website, stayed for the banger song.
