- Heres a quick how to on using the Schumacher SC1281 battery charger. There were a couple features that were confusing at first but ince figured out this battery charger is a peice of cake to use. For the money its also a very good product and i would definitely recommend this for anyones garage.

Pressing the start button is one detail i missed when trying to use my 'hand me down charger'. Thought it was something else, smh thank you!
According to most Schumacher manuals you’re supposed to use an insulated 6AWG cable of length 2 feet (minimum or more) for the negative post, as opposed to just directly attaching the negative/black wire directly. I use the black wire of a jumper cable set (just clamp reds of the jumper together and put out of the way).
So: attach the red charger cable directly to positive post, then attach the black charger cable to one end of the black jumper cable, then attach the other end of the black jumper cable to the negative post of the battery.
A good practice is to also have the battery sitting on top of some type of insulation (cardboard/plywood..) instead of the battery bottom directly on cold concrete.
What’s the difference with the first setting and the one you have it on?
My Schumacher SC1281 no longer works after it was exposed charging a battery during a rain. Is there something to check on it that could be an easy fix or is it good for the landfill?
Do you guys know if it can charge a dead battery? I find that these new chargers don't charge it automatically and go into a trickle desulfation mode.
the 1281 model does have the ability to jump a dead battery. you just need to choose the "100A Engine Start" using the rate selection button
I have this charger but not a fan because of the shape. It takes twice the space on the shelf as my previous one that stood upright but you could also lay flat.
I'm a little confused by some of the comments, Jake. I got this system this evening so as to hold me over until I can get my battery replaced. If I let it charge long enough can I not take it with me--- in case my car trys to not start on me again--- so that I can jump my car??
From what I understand this isn’t a jump pack it’s only a battery charger. However it’s better than nothing if you can find an outlet to plug into near by.
I got the same charger but the % never shows up. Does yours?
Does the battery charger have to be charged or does it have to be plugged in a wall?
@ TJ
I think it has to be plugged in to a wall.
How do you get the thing you plug into the wall out of the plastic case it looks like the plastic is sealed around it.
What about the % in the top left red how do you get that to show?
It should show automatically when its charging
How long does the battery charger have to be charged initially before using it? I have viewed a few reviews and no one has actually answered this question.
I typically let it charge for at least a few hours, there is usually an indicator on this to let you know when it is fully charged. Just to be safe however, I will leave it on the charger over night once every few days, just to make sure the full charge is maintained on the battery charger.
The charger itself has a plug. It doesn't hold a charge like a jump pack does. It's a charger with the ability to start. Hope that helps 👍
The screen switches between voltage and charge level.
Hello, excelent review. Do you know if the jump start feature works with a 6 Volts battery or just with 12 volts battery in the car? I have a vintage Willys CJ2A with the original 6 Volts system. Thanks.

I used to 100amp, still not starting. Suspect dead battery, was tested ok. Any ideas?
If you’re not getting any clicking or cranking when you turn the key you may have a bad starter or ignition problem
@@jakelogan630 is started yesterday. Now this mornings are thing, lights flash on dashboard, not starting. Tried 100 amp, nothing. Do you suggest 30amp charging? It was plugged in overnight
I m 81 have shumaker XP2260.
What connects first the red or black? I had the black on while machine was off and unplugged and tried to put on the red put it was sparking
If you connect the red first it should spark little to none at all
Correct! always connect positive 1st then negative and then the reverse when you remove the clamps. Great video, just finished charging a 850 CCA battery now with the same charger.
@@404notfound..... mine is new. I plugged it into wall outlet. It just says 00.
how do you know if your battery is agm or standard?
It usually says on the label
@@jakelogan630 - Actually, it seldom does!
absorbent glass mat
AGM means absorbent glass mat and refers to the fine glass fiber separator between the positive and negative plates that helps absorb all the battery acid. AGM Batteries are advanced lead-acid batteries.
Standard battery
A standard flooded battery or a wet cell battery consists of a number of lead plates divided by a series of separators-the plates and separators along with a liquid electrolyte (sulfuric acid) are all packed inside a solid casing.
And if your wondering able what Gel is on the machine it’s a
Gel batteries are called gel because they use silica (or sand) to turn the acid inside the battery into a thick liquid. This liquid does make it spill-proof, like our AGM batteries, but the gel is fragile, and can be easily burned if used in high amperage situations.
That isn't the way this thing works
THAT IS A GEL BATTERY. Optima are GEL Batteries...
Optimas website lists them as AGM
According to Optima: An OPTIMA battery is neither a gel battery nor a regular flooded battery. OPTIMA is a SPIRALCELL TECHNOLOGY AGM battery.
You did not show where to put the clamps.
Black goes to black, red goes to red

So I have to plugged in the charger then put the charger on the battery?
I just bought one and tried to used it out of the box without plugging it in.. It's did not work..
This charger has to be plugged into the wall for it to function.
Gm which one do I buy to use if I break down at the side of the road?? No wall to plug it into?
Funny you're charging a gel battery
Your not suppose to charge AGM battery's over a certain amount. I think it's only to be max charged at under 15 amps. And don't use a jump box or over 15 amps. Is O.k.to jump from another battery or vehicle. Read the info that comes with the battery or you will ruin it or deplete its life span. Look it up! Montana Rick.
That is false! If an AGM battery drops below a certain level a normal charger will not grab it and you will have to 15 or 30 amp boost until the AGM charge lifts to a point that the normal chargers can grab it.
I run all AGMs in my boat and a 15-3 charger will handle them fine.
If for some reason they get to low I have to boost them at 30 amps for 15 min before the charger will recognize them.

Very very poor product😢.
Do not buy this product! Send it back to the Chinese!
