We had trespassers all the time on our access road behind our farm. Put up a gate, people still cut locks trying to get in and park like they owned it. Finally waited til they came again, locked them in, booted the cars and had sheriff's office literally serve them with criminal trespass and vandalism charges for cutting the lock. Sometimes you have to get drastic to protect your property and your peace.
Love it!! The density of some folks brains is often incomprehensible.
It also helps to have a law enforcement background and know the sheriff personally...
@@shibalover54 you'd think plenty of signage, barriers, chain and locks would be a clue....but apparently some people either don't care or feel entitled to do whatever they want without any repercussions whatsoever. In our case, the people believed they had a right because they never got caught, their relatives did it, so why couldn't they? Some people's children...I swear 🤦
@@33yoal especially having your local sheriff on speed dial because you're already friends and have lunch or dinner together in a regular basis 🤣🤣
Wow!
Eric, I would HIGHLY recommend putting a reflective triangle sign somewhere on that gate so if someone pulls in at night they will see it, and if anyone does ever hit it, you can say you had it properly posted and visible for nighttime drivers.
That or some well-placed conspicuity tape (from any auto parts store or truck stop). Reflectors are most effective when close to headlight level.
Also attach 1 no trespassing sign on each post
It's gonnah sag so go ahead and put a wheel on it to take the stress off the gate AND the wooden post.
A wheel makes it soooooooo much easier to move open and close. I hope he does add one.
that is a fantastic idea!
WS thinking that also
I would never just show up at a family members place without notice let alone a stranger's. And, yes, even though we watch Eric's life on video, he doesn't share ours. We are strangers to him. It's disrespectful to assume it would okay to "drop in". That color is fantastic. Even if it wasn't necessary, it looks gooooood!! It's also good to have a friend joining in. .
Having installed many of these (we own a ranch), these long gates will sag. Even the light ones will over time pull the post, you have it attached to, to pull over or even warp/bend...it just happens. You can do the block of wood trick (as some one already suggested) on the bottom of the gate so when it is resting the block will hold it up. If you can, they make wheels you can attach to it that makes opening the gate easier since you do not have to lift it slightly to move it as you would with the block of wood. On our gates we generally install two posts on the hing side and then attach them to each other with cross posts or even barbed wire tightened (depends what is in the back of the truck :-) ) but since you returned the auger you may just want to go with the wheel. You may have to level the dirt where the wheel travels to make things easier.
Good luck!
Oh my gosh, I'm not even an influencer and I'm having the same problem here. I've a fully fenced, gated, and posted private property and people still feel entitled to scale over my gates. I've had to confront them while armed and with dogs. Honestly, I'm thinking of getting Llamas. Please do not ever feel as though you've to apologize or rationalize wishing to have your own calm, safety, and comfort while at home! Only unhinged or delusional people go that far to disregard blatant signs. It can be quite unsettling to deal with. I'm glad you live in a "Stand your ground" state, thank goodness.
You should look into a wheel to go on bottom of the gate to help support its weight as it swings. That way the post with the hinges doesn’t start to fatigue over time…
agreed for future.
Regardless of your reasonings for putting that gate up, it certainly does look very very nice! What great curb appeal!
And I must say you and Diane look good together ! Happy homesteading.
Many thanks!
With that soil and length of gate... I would highly recommend tying in bracing posts on both the front and back side branching 45 degrees off the hinging post. (think v shaped) this will take some of the stress off it in all directions and help keep the post straight (use lag bolts all the way through). Also, you might want a wheel on that long gate. Also mound the concrete higher than ground sloping away from the wooden gate so that water won't collect around the bottom of the post. Good luck. I like the property and everything you've done so far. :)
That would be a little uncomfortable having strangers drive up on your property and especially if you’re not at home. Definitely a good ideal to put up a gate and a big no trespassing sign.
This is the reason why I don't show my house or even my cars.
@@metromadness2016and you are who? Is that something you actually think is an issue?
@@HughWoo Who ARE YOU? ?? You seem to think everyone needs YOUR permission or something.
I guess some people think that since you put your private life on YT that they can invade in your private life outside of YT also. Good on you for setting physical and personal boundaries.
People think that anyway. Dont need to be public on youtube.
Eric, I think it would have been easier to paint the gate last, after it was already hung
Also i would fence off from the posts at a 45 degree angle towards the road maybe 20 feet just to detour an easy walk around the post
But the whole thing looks to be a great improvement!
If you weren’t invited, go away! That is a good sign. 😊 can’t believe people just show up, I would never!
I am amazed with one person who said why would you care you need to learn to like your viewers? Like somebody but you don’t want that person just showing up completely unannounced on your property no matter who they are. I agree with you completely that people have the attitude. Well I know you on RUclips. No they don’t know you they know the videos that you put out. They don’t personally know you and your every day personality. I have been watching you for about 10 years and I would never just show up at your home and say that you know me because I watch you on RUclips
Exactly 💯
The Age of Entitlement happening all over in these times.
Eric, you may want to put some Big Reflectors on your New Green Gate so that it can be EASILY SEEN at NIGHT with HEADLIGHTS!!
Reflective Tape will work. Inexpensive.
Reflective Tape will work. Inexpensive.
I would love to hang out with you eric, but I would never do it without premission and or invitations. Yikes..
The gate looks great in hunter green 😍 That's what CVK should have got was that auger. I remember him digging manually .
I only had a small amount of dirt on top... rock from then on. That auger would have just sat on top and spun. I'd say there was over 15 hours of labor to reach 3 feet deep on hinge side, 2 feet was as far as we could get on other side. It was insane. Chisels, electric jack hammers etc etc. To say my posts are in solid ground would be an understatement. CVK
👍❤
My family has a property in the Idaho hills . The only road in is through a locked gate . Once you get to the property there is another gate. The lower road has boulders blocking. People have still got onto the property with four wheelers . A gate is a good deterrent though.
That's Cool!😎 I never realized they had that type of post hole diggers. Smart,...very Smart! Thumbs up!👍
I can totally understand your privacy issues with people coming around unannounced and the need for a gate; wait until the rude people get offended and decide to fly a drone over Tatorland just to antagonize you.
* Also, might need to install a real time camouflaged security camera overlooking the gate just to see who’s lurking about when you are there or not there but can view it on your phone.
It's amazing to me how many people don't understand the concept of "private" when it comes to private property.
Serious...
I've seen RUclipsrs that had to move to gated communities that needed a code to get in just to stop people from doing this.
Too bad you didn't do two more holes while you had the machine . Ninety degree angle from the driveway about six feet to the side and in line with the gate posts set a post sticking up about a foot . Big eye hook in it and the back side of your gate post with a 1/4' cable with a big turnbuckle hooked to both . Keeps the post from leaning , which it will even with a light gate , and when it does lean you can tighten the turnbuckle and pull it straight . Just a suggestion from an old timer . Happy trails and keep the shiny side up .
What a cool tool. I'm sure you ended up having to dig those holes a bit more to make room for the 200+ lbs concrete for each hole. To support hinge side better add another post next to it in line about 3-4 feet away and connect a brace from top of hing post to bottom of 2nd post 👍💪
If you are offsetting the gate to allow for Ups and Rv's to pullup on your driveway you will need a fence from the main road to the gate to stop people from just bypassing the gate and driving onto your property... Or even Posts....
That gate needs underglow.
LOL, better take it to Modified Auto before it’s installed!!!😂😂😂😂
^This guy gets it!
Great video on using the towable hydraulic auger. So much easier to use than the one or two man augers. I thought the aluminum was sufficient but the green made it look so much better! Maybe you should schedule another meet & greet and possibly do a video on proper etiquette for meeting you out in the wild.
Having used gates on rural land, the experience was people who want to force entry can with one exception - steel post with the lock attached inside the post. The Deer Leasees usually put these fences up to protect access on their leases.
Eric, you might want to consider fencing at least the part of your property that is along the main road. Also, see if AZ has a Purple law like Texas. Paint fence posts and certain tree trunks Purple in addition to the No Trespassing signs. That way, if someone can't read, they should at least see the purple markings. Good luck.
happy belated birthday..some people cant understand how privacy works so putting up that gate is understandable..i would of lightly burned the posts you put into the ground to prevent them from rotting even though there treated wood..helps with decay and bugs
almost lost my cookies at 12:52
People are so rude I couldn’t imagine driving onto someone’s property uninvited. Caravan Carolyn yrs back had same problem. I wouldn’t go to my next door neighbors house without consulting first. I’d just fence the whole property when you’re able. Thanks Eric for video
That would have been the first thing I put up when I bought the property. Then a pole fence along the entire front with the obvious no trespassing signs.
I have used a smaller gas powered auger a lot over the years. You really lucked out with the auger in rocky soil. Consider that a huge win!
As a gate owner.... Make sure that gate is wide enough for ANYTHING you may want in the future... We had to pull one side of ours out when we had an 18 wide building brought in....
Oh yeah. Like I said, widest RVs are 9ft wide. A 16ft. gate is large enough for anything entering the front of property. I also have other entrance points available later.
I like the green. Great idea to have a gate. Over time a gate that big will sag somewhat. One solution is putting an adjustable wheel at the end without the post. This will support the gate a bit. Otherwise have a nice catch lock it snaps into solid if you don’t want the wheel. Ran cattle for 20 years, had a little experience with gates. Bent one in half once with the tractor not paying attention but that’s a story for another time! 🤣. A reflective sign someone mentioned is a great idea too. Nice project Eric and piece of raisin pie to Diane for helping out! 👍🏻👍🏻
Wow,...short shorts!! Like the green... and agree with others about needing a wheel and possibly some angled brace posts on each side to help prevent the gate from eventually sagging.. Amazing how rude people can be... hope this helps stop the uninvited "trespassers"!!
We had to put up a no trespassing sign on vacant land we owned. It is very disturbing when someone thinks they can cross your land whenever they want. I even had to stop at the guilty neighbor's house and tell him to remove the 'landscaping' that he did around MY tree that had MY posted sign on it! We are now in contract to sell that land. No way do I want to build a house next to THAT guy!
To help prevent the gate from sagging over time, put a rock or a block of wood at the spot where the gate rests when it is open and rest the gate on it. That takes the weight of the gate off of the hinges.
Do the same for where the gate is when you have it locked. A block of wood is easy enough to move if you have to.
He can also add a wheel of some kind.
an anchor line from the locking end of the gate to the hinge post then to the ground would be helpful too
We have two similar gates. Both have wheels. Saves a lot of sag and effort to open and close it. Remember to block it open or closed or the wind will take it and crack your post

Shame on people who can’t respect your privacy and follow directions. I’m sorry you have to put up a dang gate. Good on you for setting boundaries. It is a very kind gesture to share your email and allow people to reach out to potentially set up a time to meet you. Best to you on the rest of the project
Hey Eric - Didn’t know I was going to view an X-rated fence painting event. In my humble opinion you should’ve added a big red ❌ over your female friend’s exposed bum area.
Right
Seriously.
Yep
u guys are gay or what?
Unfortunately, I can’t unsee that! Yuck!!!
It's amazing that people think it's okay to just show up like that, not even counting the signs. You need to add a sign that says, "I have a gun and a backhoe. Any questions?"
😂😂😂😂 ❤
Ya need to put a "Stop" sign on it next to a "No trespassing" sign. Also make up a sign that says, "If Ya ain't invited, Ya ain't welcome!" A custom made 12" by 18" aluminum sign is about $40.
I miss the AZ weather in the spring. Its so humid here 😫 The homestead is looking good and it was a good idea to allow for that pull-in space, before the gate 👍🏼
The proper way to visit would be to call first, informing Eric you had two cases of Bud Light to drop off... then wait for the invite. 😂
Well, maybe PBR or Ranier. I think he gave up on any Bud products like a lot of us did. 😊
@shibalover54 lol, probably... I think we might get by showing up unannounced if we're bringing two cases of Ranier! (Just kidding of course, even with Ranier it is still uncool to "drop in")
I agree Eric, do not show up unannounced, rude ! You’re getting lots of good ideas from your viewers. Thanks for sharing!
Safety and health care first. You gotta do what’s best for your property safety and friends within.
Plus side, I like the green gate. This is something new. It improves protection and property values. Gives you someplace new for video cameras. 👍
Hey Eric I hope u realize a gate alone will not stop them ,u need a fence at least a long the frt of property, also u should either put a wheel on the end of the gate and run a adjustable cable or chain from top of the pivot post to the ground or post will bend from gate weight.(good luck)
I admire how you work Eric. I would not want uninvited people popping in. I am the same way about my home. I don't want even my own family just showing up without letting me know first. It is not rude. It is just how I want it.
Can't imagine why ppl would think they can just "visit", or ever enter property uninvited. GL. That auger makes work a lot easier. Green looks great. 🙂👍
HI Eric
I had a large gate and what I did was attach a wheel near the end and it stopped it from sagging. Love that auger, tater land looks great.
You are brave digging the holes. Around here we would dig to holes per side. The second hole would have an anchor cable usually run at a 45-degree angle, since one of the poles will have to support the hanging weight of the gate, the way you described it. I think a floresent orange or yellow would be more a preferred color so you can see it.
My friends font ecen show up unannounced. Its common courtesy. But I definitely would put several reflective caution triangles on the gate in case its dark.
A gate is always a good idea, along with fences. They make good neighbors. Fencing takes longer but the gate will slow many people down
There going to walk around the gate anyway
It's nice that you have a friend to help you paint the gate!
You mean girl friend right he said it
Eric, you have every right to your own privacy. You need to put a full fence across your property so they dont park and walk around the gates. Stay safe!!!!
They will park and go around the fence. I think some barbed wire with a flavor of zap would be needed in this case. This will keep cars out but angry entitled people?? Nope. We will be watching him string fence all the way around.
I agree, that is a fine looking gate !
Time to build the wall... or fence. People have no repect for others privacy.
My thoughts exactly. "Gate? Ha! I can go around that!" Sadly, that gate is never going to be better than the fence that isn't there yet..
You mean like building a "wall" at our Southern border to protect our sovereignty and Nations Privacy? Anyone in favor of securing their own property should be in favor of securing our Nation. AND VOTE ACCORDINGLY.
Thats what I was thinking he had already rented the hole digger why not at least go ahead and dig the post holes for a entire fence for later.
People will just go around the gate to the right.
The fence is a good idea. It keeps you all a little safer inside. I can’t believe people think just because they fallow you on RUclips they think you know them as friends and relatives. So it’s ok for them to just stop by. That’s crazy. I would like to meet you one day myself, but I would only do that in a a meet and greet setting.
Your painted gate looks really nice and should totally afford you the privacy so deserved.👏
Hello Eric. Hello Dianna. Nice to see you both. Your gate Looks so nice. Nothing says No trespassing Like a gate. I hope it works the way you want it to. Your friend, Louise
Hey dude. Fence builder by trade here. Figured I’d share some advice if you’re willing to take it. I always make the footing bigger that the gate hangs off to compensate for weight. Plus that fast set concrete I’ve had problems with it in the past. So now I give it as much time to dry as possible. If I have the time I would wait half a day if not more just to make sure it’s 100% dry and won’t crack. Cheers
Thanks bud.
Great idea! I'm sorry people don't get it. I love the green and agree with the other comment, put something fluorescent or bright on it for night-time.
understandable and im pretty sure most of the time its not a issue, but yes people need to be given boundaries, and reminded of etiquette . Plus u outright stated where u go while home ,in public to say hi, and as u said email u . Gate looks great, saw comment and its great idea, gate is camouflaged to blend into surrounding area, but maybe put orange triangle facing out to help,in low light and dark conditions, more just to save u grief of someone hitting it by accident and damaging it . Will u be putting on wheels on bottom to help relieve pressure and wear an tear on hinges?
I think you did that with finesse. I can't believe people just show up anyways. Thanks for sharing. Love yah Nancy
Add some LARGE rocks along the stub-driveway edges - so the idiots don't try to 4WD around through the scrub!
You are doing the right thing Eric!!! Great episode!!!! I still hope we can ride next time you’re in Oregon!!!
People can still walk in around the gate if they are determined. Just saying.. ✌️
People are more wonky than ever! Good idea to run a fence and put up a gate. Hope it works out....if not you can make some changes. You've got a good start!!
Hey Eric, Tim here in the maroon CRV… Lol yeah, Kevin had a heckuva time with that and you guys need your privacy place to decompress live your life without all of us, sticking our noses in it… lol… Anyway, place is looking good bud… I don’t know if I’m gonna make it back to Arizona this year I’m having to do some major engine work to my old RV and it’s not cheap looking at five to $7000 for a new motor that’s hard to do when you’re putting in the 1977 class C RV but anyway cool video keep them coming my puppy Jill and I will keep watching talk soon… :-)… PS… You might think about putting some boulders on each side of that gate, so they can’t drive around… I think that’s what Kevin did, and not to say that you’re copying Kevin, because I am not… L O L… Talk soon buddy
You could put up "beware of dogs" sign, even if you don't have any.
Looking good. I don't like unexpected visitors either. A meet/greet at the store/bar sounds more suitable.
Great video Eric and Diana...
The painting is wonderful..
It’s always a great to start to a day with a new Nomadic Fanatic video!
Enjoy!
You can get bolt on gate wheels that make the gate easier to open and keep ot from sagging.
Eric, you’re a Celebrity now, Do what you gotta do!
Back in the day, my dad used a manual post hole digger to make a cement reinforcment hole/ditch/wall in the ground.... It worked well.
I've been following you for years. You are looking good, man. Guns out!
I like it. Good color & great idea on allowing for a pull off area.
That's the downside of being a famous public figure, people are going to want to visit where you live.
I'm so glad no one knows who I am lol.
good vid on the channel on the channel keep up the good work on home stay lot to do thanks lee
Eric ... People who have these gates you're installing put a wheel on the side that opens .. this keeps them from sagging. That color green is beautiful ❤️
Great idea
Are you going to put a little wheel on the gate to support the weight has you open it?
But anyone can just walk around the gate and be on your property 🤷♂️
That's a given, but 'with stand your ground'..it's easier with signage AND a gate with signs to explain the shooting when the police arrive.
One thing at a time!!! I'm sure a fence is coming sometime!!!
That sucks cause that ruins everything for everybody else I’m a real fan of you and I love when I can meet up with you or when I see you places in town, but I have so much respect. I would never go out there. That’s crazy people would even do that.
Good luck with the trespassers Eric. Fence looks awesome.
As a fan who has been watching for many years like since you live in your brown van I would give you a call and heads up.
also you can add a wheel to the far end to prevent sagging......
Blah blah complain complain, but continue to cash those checks
Sorry some folks don't get it when privacy (even for some celebrities) . meeting you is a public place, even by accident is proper and to be expected. wondering onto your private property is not. Good luck with the gate.
Paint after hung
No install scratches😊 9 bags...overkill
He can return what he doesn't use, and perhaps, he has other projects..There you go ASSUMING again.
I watch a channel called little house off grid. Now he really is a tight about people being on his property so he said he don't have homeowners insurance if somebody gets hurt on his property they could sue him for everything he has. So that should be your by word too I don't care if you got insurance or you don't you don't need people on your property that can trip you up our trip up your future financially. All right see you in 3 days I hope everything turns out real good. But I agree with the guy who said you need to put something fluorescent like a triangle or the tape on that gate. Because man it could be held liable for that if somebody ran into it that is the world we are in now...😊
I'm actually very aware of that as well. I have waivers prepared for casual events here...
After the gate is up, if you can afford to, maybe some steel posts and wire from your gate going left and right a long your property frontage. Further deterrent perhaps?
Ole girl letting it all literally hang out.
I would add some solar lights and 4K cameras to get the plate numbers of suspicious vehicles parked at your gate.
yeah you do, need a private security fence with gate all the way around your property.
I'd do the same thing Eric. We all have a right to some privacy on our property if we want it. Love the projects, great video!
Nice one Eric- people like you and YOU don’t want them on your property. they just want to see you or the taterland set in real life. if you still had a smart car they would want to see that but I’d rather see the tracker.
Cool video
love the green!
Your microphone is muffled. Doesn't sound right but good video!
