i remember my friend's father had a Fender P bass hiding somewhere in his room. as soon as his dad left, me and my friend went into his room, found it and i was blown away. we had to dust it off real good because it hadn't been used in over a decade. i tuned it, plugged it in, and i was in love. it seems the more you use it, the better it gets.
Matt freeman plays a rockabilly style which he holds the pick in a way where he very rarely uses his middle and ring finger but 97% of the time he uses .5 picks
As a Punk Bass Player I've never used a pick.. I really like the sound of Punk Bass lines being played with a pick but it's just not for me.. I can play so much faster with my fingers including 16 notes.. and I can get way better Bass Line Melodies and have way more control playing with my fingers. Lol Anyway super cool video!!
i like to switch between fingers and picks. like fall back down when speaking of matt freeman you like play your softer sounding notes with fingers and do complimeting accents with the pick i figured out how to switch and hold a pick between my thumb and index knuckle and put it back in my fingers
This works on pop-punk but if you want a good old school punk rock sound? Use ampeg tube head, crank every setting on your amp (gain also) and roll your tone of on your bass.
I agree that a PBass through an Ampeg SVT is the goto punk rock bass tone, unfortunately those amps are crazy expensive and not everyone can afford one
New subscriber! Awesome video dude! Super helpful info here for really any type of bass and you're actually showing us how to do it not just talking over bass takes. Thank you!
Yea, the little clip on pop filter I got isn't really working as well as I'd hoped and I had the compressor working a bit too hard. Thanks for the feedback!
Guitarist recording bass. Thanks for the help brother. Subscribed. For midi bass, would you say the sound that's being emulated at high velocity is hard pick? Obviously it depends on the bass vst, but most stock bass sounds (fl boobass actually isn't bad)

Why can't most folk these days use actual pedals? I'm sick of all these computer- download- punch in crap. What ya'll gonna do, take your whole computer to a show? I miss the days when real players used real gear.
Well, pedals cost money. Everything I show in the video can be purchased as a physical piece of gear, but if you aren't gigging then why buy gear you don't need?

From the videos I've seen it looked like he was playing with his fingers...it's absolutely possible I'm wrong tho
Yeah his work with Rancid is almost exclusively picked. Not sure about his other projects like charger and devils brigade.
I was going to clarify this but I figured someone else already had!
Now I know why I love chorus on Bass, thanks!
It's that sweet magic SAUCE
Lots of good info here man kudos for sharing
My pleasure!

@@anndynegative yea you can get that tone without paying much but thats what i use. Bought ampeg v4bh for 730e
what do you mean by roll your tone? Sorry If I'm a noob .
@@Williaem00 roll your tone knob off on your bass.

Probably more of a "hard picked" sound which is good for running through amp vsts
Is anyone else using the Darkglass B7K for punk tones?
I've heard that's used for metal tones a lot. Haven't had the chance to try it out for punk rock, but I'm sure it works great
@@anndynegative I'm playing around with it right now and my band LOVES it. I can totally mess up the top end, but the lows stay put.

I would like to have long hair to color it, but i am 46 years old and I dont have a hair. But I am still play punk rock 🥴😉😉...on the bass!
I'm letting it grow out and it's really just a pain. You aren't missing much haha
I am 45 years old, I again am playing Punk Rock on the Bass, and I still do have full long hair that I am not gonna dye again 😁🤘
The only way to get a good punk tone on bass is to grab your bass and hammer it like it owes you money.. oh and plug it into a real fucking amplifier
DI bass has been a common practice since the 80s. Nothing is a substitute for an ampeg SVT Classic through an 8x10 fridge tho
