love all your info! Very helpful to me as a metal bassist. I wanna say 2 things though: If you haven't tried them yet, give Sadowsky Black Label Steel strings a try. They sound a little bit less bright than DAddario Pro Steels for example but for me, they hardly change their tone. I just love them. Pro Steels I wanted to change after like 2 weeks (not recording, just playing) or 4 weeks at the latest. The Black Labels stay on for months and keep sounding great. And about playing approach: absolutely true that a pick will give you more clank, no question about it. It's not really a big deal to make a bass sound metal when playing fingerstyle though either. What you have to do is adjust your technique for metal (don't play like a pop, funk, whatever player) by not plucking in parallel to the body but hitting towards the body and make the strings bounce off the frets like with slap and of course you have to adjust your bass' setup to match your playing technique. Then it's very simple.
I achieve this by mixing 3 tracks of bass as follows: Track 1. Recorded with a SansAmp RBI preamp that simulates an Ampeg SVT amp, and the signal goes into a SVT IR cabinet. Track 2. I record an uneffected DI and apply a saturation on it. Track 3. Record heavily distorted track by using a guitar distortion pedal such as Fulltone OCD. You blend the three in such a way that you get most of the effected track from Track 1, adding slightly of a DI to fill in the sub frequency range as well as very slightly add a Track 3 which increases the "bite". These are routed into a bus called "Bass Mix" and from that bus I export a "send" into a parallel bus where I apply heavy compression using a compressor known as RNLA from FMR audio, where I squash the bass and blend this as a parallel compression to the Bass Mix. This offers unprecedented control over your bass tone. I do this because bass not always fits in every song equally based on the dynamics, tempo and the expression of the guitar and other instruments like drums. You can then adjust the blending between the 3 tracks to enable the bass to sit in the mix properly.
Thank you Kristian for the word on the Mammoth plugin! Used it with your IR on a recent production ... before I had been creating the same effect, but with 2 bass channels (DI + Amp) & a sub-bass channel which sounded ...similar... but the Mammoth plugin achieves the exact same result, makes it so much easier, and the bass cuts through the mix even better honestly! Absolutely awesome with fresh strings!
I think the key point is the stainless steel strings. Before watching this video I didn't know how important they are. I couldn't find prosteel or Warwick where I live but Markbass energy series have worked pretty well. I don't use the mammoth but I used the same tricks explained in this video in Amplitube and it worked. So, in short: This video changed my life and I get the DANGLE DANGLE tone I was seeking for a long time. thank you man. 😊
One quick update. Seems that I am having hard times to get the clanky tone on my E string while I get it on A string. I get a woody - a bit disturbing sound instead on E string. What could be the reason? Ibanez sgr300 4 strings. Markbass stainless steel. A bit low action like 2-2.5 mm ( tried higher and a bit more lower but its getting worse) any toughts?

this video is awesome. as a punk/metal bass player ive always gone after that clank dangle dangle sound and this nails it perfectly. I hate having conversations with other bass players about "real bass is played with fingers blah blah"
It just depends on what you want to achieve and what you’re good at. I honestly enjoy fingers the most, and it’s what I’m best at. I would like to be able to reasonably play with a pick, but I just ain’t there with my muting 😂

The dängle sound has nothing to do with pick or fingers, it's about attack. I get a dängliger sound with my fingers because I use really low action and strike down towards the fretboard (Jack Gibson from Exodus is a prime example of this technique). It doesn't really matter what playing style you use, as long as you get the attack, fresh strings (not steel or nickel, just fresh), distortion and EQ right. You did get a really good tone though and I did learn some things here. Something I do is add a multiband compressor after the distortion and EQ. I compress the hell out of the high mids and low highs and then boost them to get that consistent clanky high end to really jump out and punch the listener in the face
Sure you can get a clanky tone with your fingers. It’s just more work and hardly any Bassist can pull it by off. They think they do though 🤪 And even if it works: why use your fingers to get a nail into the wall if you can use a hammer?

Seems to be a great alternative to the parallax! And it has flexible mids! I find myself annoyed by the fact that parallax is not that flexible in the midrange. Cool video! Sweet sounding bass!
In the past, I have double tracked the bass DI but put a Wampler Leviathan pedal on one of them. Its made for guitar but sounds unreal on bass. Mixing the two with a little compression gave me what I'm after and sounds very similar.
Great bass tone, as much as everyone loves a huge guitar tone, IMO leaving plenty of room for the rhythm section to sound big often tends to result in a more aggressive sound overall, even though the guitars might not sound as huge. One of my favorite examples is the Outsider album by Comeback Kid, that album sounds mean as hell even though (or because) the guitars leave the low end wide open for the bass.
The Dunlop stainless Steel Strings are also pretty great and aren't that expensive as those from the other Brand you mentioned. ... Always good to bring something like that up 3 months later but hey :D
Hello Kohle, watched your tutorial yesterday, thanks! I tried the Mammoth yesterday (together with your compression/EQ approach, but I was little bit confused about the level of distortion you reached with Mammoth in your video. I recorded my Dingwall NG3 with fresh stainless steel strings, peaking about -10dB, but I had problems to get a significant level of distortion with Mammoth (though input level turned up to 15). I was cranking up all the features but it doesn't sound nearly as pleasant as your recording. I don't get it ... maybe you have an idea ...
hmmm.....it seems to me that I can use mooooooore of this ultimate dängle mammoth control right in the center when using my fingers, richtig? Because the problem is, using a plec is more complicated to me, so I would like to avoid that. I also figured out, that cutting fingernails too often, will erase dängle as well, so that maybe will be a part of the final solution.
15:06 500 Hz is EXACTLY what I remove from my 8-string guitar tone with a EQ in the loop! I like a lot of mids on the amp's preamp, but I remove just the 500 Hz afterwards. It's the single best trick in metal EQ'ing IMHO.
Great video if you're going for the clanky, cut-through sound. Honestly though I'd rather punch through than cut. It's good enough for Geezer, it's good enough for me.
Hey Kristian, I am stuggling learning how to utilize a basic compressor plugin to control the spiking frequencies that occur during heavy palm muting. The Profab filters look incredibly user friendly for this purpose and that seems to be the go-to tool but I would like to know to use the standard compressor plugins to do this. I've tried other tutorials and they helped a bit but I'm still missing something in order to apply this successfully. If you could do that some time in the future that would be f***ing fantastic!
fetter Bass Sound. Tolle und Unterhaltsame Erklärung im Video. Aber jetzt ne (vielleicht blöde) Frage. Wie bekomme ich den Sound denn live hin? Bei kleineren Gigs spiele ich nur über meine Box. What you have to do is adjust your technique for metal (don't play like a pop, funk, whatever player) by not plucking in parallel to the body but hitting towards the body and make the strings bounce off the frets like with slap and of course you have to adjust your bass' setup to match your playing technique. Then it's very simple.
Great Killer Bass Tone. I bought this Plugin yesterday cause of your intruduction. Cheers Karsten
What do you think about using plugin waves Bass rider as the first one?
So important in metal is to have a solid sounding bass tone, great vid!
Neural DSP Parallax also has built in parallel comp in one plugin. But they DO sound quite different!
Yes, I’m not a fan of Parallax though. To me it always sounds a little artificial
Geht doch, haha!
@@KohleAudioKult ja :D
is doch total easy :D
this video is awesome. as a punk/metal bass player ive always gone after that clank dangle dangle sound and this nails it perfectly.
Kohl - you have the most informative music production channel on YT. Please keep it up with the tutorials / techniques / production tips.
I’m sick of watching FAQ videos 🤣
Don't worry. I'm just getting started!
But maybe I should do my very first FAQ video too?
I love how just a Jazz bass with both pickups and tone at 100% sound for Metal
So Dangle is basically forced fret buzz? Nice. Always kinda knew that deep down (lol) but now I can really hear that on your demo and mix. And then when its run through a mixer or FX you have more to work with.
TWO metal bass videos!?!? Thanks for sharing your secrets of the dangle with us!!!
I always default to all knobs on the bass cranked like I do on my guitars. I also usually stay with the bridge pickup. I'm going to have to re-think this approach!
I lucked out my pod go has ampeg modeling within its parameters. Tasty. Dang dangle indeed.
For me it’s all about the playing and the instrument. To get the aggressive grindy tone, I have to use new strings and somewhat low action.
Same here.
"it's more metal to play with a pick", idk the last Archspire record had one of the best ever captured bass tones and Jared Smith plays with his fingers
There are always exceptions. I also got a great bass tone on the last Aborted records.
But why use your fingers when you can use a hammer?
@@KohleAudioKult what if your fingers ARE hammers?!

@@Mikey__R the hard fingerstyle where you’re just slamming the strings down instead of doing rest strokes can get those metal attacks like you would use a pick for alongside thick tones, you might be onto something B)
I bought Mammoth last week. Sick plugin. I'm gonna try your IR tomorrow :)
Been looking for something like this video for what seems like forever yet RUclips algorithms keep suggesting worlds dumbest criminals 🤷♂️🤦♂️ definitely a new subscriber 🤘🤘🤘
Welcome! ❤️🍺🤘
"Pick good"
[generally positive mumbling]
"Fingers bad"
[angry dislike noises]
Love this video! I think you could do more videos on drum recording, mic choices etc.
Oh yeah! Sure!
@@KohleAudioKult Maybe a beginners mic recording kit for drums? or how to record drums on budget. Anything like that would be cool!
Love the DI tone. Thank you for the tips! Also thanks for the presets on Mammoth.
They think they do though 🤪
And even if it works: why use your fingers to get a nail into the wall if you can use a hammer?

I like that intro
"This is about that... Ding ding ding ding djng"
Ill adopt it 😜😜
Best live bass tone I ever heard was Dead To Fall, Anaheim, ca. I think they opened for Napalm Death. What year?
Awesome information! and what a song, love when the slow melody kicks in... love it!!! I follow you because of URM academy, I am a composer and started as a producer too. Mr, Kohle have become in one of my favourites creative producers, huge inspiration. Best regards from México!
Much love from Germany! Thanks man! Glad you found me.
Very excellent video sir! I don't have the Mammoth plugin but was able to get close ( I think ) using stock plugins from Reaper and freebies from Ignite:
Charvel CHS4
Berhinger Ultra-DI into a Tascam US-1641
Reaper
VST ReaEQ using the stock Basic 11 band Rock Bass setting with a high pass around 80
VST Ignite SHB-1: G7, B5, M9, T7, Bal 6, V6, Deep Bright and Shape on, Mono
VST Ignite NadIR: No settings changes. Orange NT2 IRs from someplace called Zuhause, though I don't remember where I got them from.
JS 3x3 EQ (1-Pole Crossover): LD% 0.9, LGdb -2.1, MD% 0, MGdb 0, HD% 10.3, HGdb 4.5, LMF 240, MHF 1440
VST ReaComp: Thres: -22.8, PC 0, A 16.5, R 205, Auto release on, weird knee on, R 4.48:1, Knee 1.3, LP 1275, HP 74, RMS 5, Wet 0, Dry off, Auto make up on, limit output on
Thank you very much for the video!!
If one were to use fingers to play metal bass, would you change the eq, compression, etc. as opposed to pick playing?
Great sound Kristian! What about tone: Fully opened or mid-opened? And how to reduce noises?
Thanks! Tone knob or what are you talking about?
I use a plugin called PARALLAX for my dangle dangle when recording bass. And I also have the DARKGLASS pedal plugin
Great stuff Mr Kohle! Bought the plugin very soon after I toyed with the demo. Your tips make this plugin sound even better! Dängle on!
Great to hear that! I will! ❤️🍺
Bro your making the most helpful videos for metal, Thank You
Thanks man! Spread the word!
Hey mate! Thank you for explaining how you dial the DI in. It seems like it's so basic that everyone skips it. Anyway, thank you for this fundamental that all other guides seems to overlook....
Alright, now I have an EP to re-track the bass 🫠
My pleasure!
Been toying with the idea of buying this plugin for a while now! Just bought it! Prost!
Another great set of strings for lower tuning a four string bass is Rotosound DropZone. They’re stainless steel also.
*stares in Alex Webster* lol boosting the high end on the bass preamp is a great tip, thanks for the video.
Love the fact, that they gave me an update with your IRs since I already purchased it. Huge thanks to aurora dsp and of course to you Kristian. Love your content!
You're welcome! Enjoy!
I got Mammoth a month ago and it's amazing. Only bass plugin I need. Awesome video.
Really appreciate you brother. Your really good at doing these videos . Very informative and love your whole vibe man.
What’s your opinion on Cobalt strings. They are the strings John Myung of Dream Theater use
Any continuity of techniques here, or advice on 8 string guitars? Cheers~
what settings would you use on a tube amp (traynor) and pedals to achieve this tone live? I fucking LOVE it
Amazing bass tone, thanks for sharing your knowledge!!!
Thanks for the info! I'll try them.
Stupi question but maybe you need new batteries?
If you get a proper level I to the plugin you should reach the same level of distortion
hmmm.....it seems to me that I can use mooooooore of this ultimate dängle mammoth control right in the center when using my fingers, richtig? Because the problem is, using a plec is more complicated to me, so I would like to avoid that. I also figured out, that cutting fingernails too often, will erase dängle as well, so that maybe will be a part of the final solution.
15:06 500 Hz is EXACTLY what I remove from my 8-string guitar tone with a EQ in the loop! I like a lot of mids on the amp's preamp, but I remove just the 500 Hz afterwards. It's the single best trick in metal EQ'ing IMHO.
Rule number 666:
500Hz is the enemy of anything metal! 🤪
This is just a theoretical quesiton, but would a short scale have more of a "dangle" due to looser strings?
Great video if you're going for the clanky, cut-through sound.
Honestly though I'd rather punch through than cut. It's good enough for Geezer, it's good enough for me.
Check out my other bass video for a tone like that! More Lemmy than Geezer though.
You're talking about guitars here right? Use a FF Pro-MB or any other dynamic EQ to control (compress) only the lowend.
fetter Bass Sound.
cool plugin!, yes I thinking the same about clanky tone, new strings and pick! but i use the UAD svt classic for that and now thanks to you ill use the mammoth plugin, sounds pretty sick, thanks!
I love the demo song... it's not available somewhere as a full song is it?
Sorry no! I just quickly composed it for the video.
@@KohleAudioKult You should man, you should. Its fucking killer

There’s an IOS app of this plugin. Just follow the link below and choose your version!
Amazing tutorial. Cheers from Stockholm.
From things you said I need, I have pick...is it enough?
Haha! It's a good start!
Sounds great, have you ever used the Joel Wannasek Bus Glue Bass or Bassforge Hellraiser from JST? I have both and they're pretty cool for making it easy to get a good bass tone
I haven't used Joel's plugin, but I have used Hellraiser. JST make great plugins, but that one never worked for me.
@@KohleAudioKult fair enough, yeah most of the time I use Joel's plugin I find I get better results and it's super simple with sliders to adjust the amount of compression on the lows and highs and 3 built in grit modes, and a button for whether you want the bass to sit above or below the kick
Make sure your action is set low enough so it'll dangle some against the frets when you pick/pluck/thump hard.
That helps of course, but it’s not the same!
Mommoth, the Parallax killer. Sounds even better an is way more versatile. Thank U for showing!
My fingers are quite good at getting that "dängle" thing! Hahahahahaha (great video!)
How can I get that (Primus covering have a cigar) buzzy tone
That's some proper bass tone!! Fckn awesome \m/
Goddangle ,thats a nice sounding bass btw!
Anyway great video, learning so much from this channel, keep it up!
