    This is where they "win". They were just unstoppable. And I believe that they had the right judges. They gave great advice, and didn't drag them down. And you...Mr. SaucyDad are joy to watch.

    A couple of notes on PTX at this time:
    - Don't worry about the judges comments. PTX was BY FAR the judges favourites and they never really gave any negative comments. The most they did was for the 2nd performance.
    - Performance #2 and #3 was on the same night (later in the competition they also started doing 2 performances each week, so 7+8, 9+10, 11+12, 13+14+winner announcement and song)
    - Scott was the clear lead singer at the time for a couple of reasons - versatility, stamina, but most notably confidence. While Kirstin and Mitch obviously has just as much talent as lead singers they didn't have the confidence in themselves to do it yet. We get small glimpes of what's to come in the show, (in particualr performance #6 for Kirstin and #12 for Mitch) but they didn't really come into their own until much later on (especially Kirstin).
    - Another issue was that apparently the network was trying to avoid any mention of LGBTQIA+ (most evident in one of the late episodes where PTX visits The Tevor Project - NOT ONE WORD is mentioned about it being an LGBTQIA+ charity). I've seen comments about them not wanting Mitch to sing using his counter tenor range, but I think those are just rumours. I've never seen any confirmation of this.

    I think this song was when Shawn Stockman fell in love with them. He is widely recognized as the first Pentaholic. He invited Kevin to play with Boyz II Men on the CMT Artists of the Year 2021. They have kept in touch.

    I think was the first “contestant slap”. Every other group had an “Ohhhh, s#!*!” moment at some point during this performance. I remember watching this live at the time and I was doing some work with the TV on in the background. As soon as PTX started my head snapped up. There were a lot of good groups on the show, but this song was the first breakout performance on the show. The “skipping” they do is now a signature PTX arrangement element. IMO-the first Mitch Slap was in performance 12. He was very shy when he was young and had significant stage fright during the show so he’s not as prominent as he is now, but when they finally unleashed him on #12 it was glorious.

    • @risaAflores222
      @risaAflores222 2 года назад +6

      I agree that the First Mitch Slap was in the 12th performance, all the earlier bits were just Mitch pats 😁. But IMHO I don't think he had stage fright, in fact he blooms on stage, performing is his comfort zone. More like he had bad social anxiety off stage. The back issue was that the show production didn't want his high tenor voice highlighted. And yes, PTX decision to unleash (best description) Mitch in #12 sealed the deal.

      @@SauceyDad hope you see this. Scott has always been the unofficial leader of the group. Though they will say there is no leader. Scott always had a confidence because he had been singing in front of live audiences since childhood (other than singing with The Trio or choir at school concerts) Kirstie and Mitch were quite shy. Mitch suffered from anxiety attacks (he has gotten a LOT better) Kevin and Avi would just relay on Scott to speak for the group. (Now they are all very vocal to Scott's relief im sure) Scott has always been the go getter (helping start PTX) mover and shaker ect. This is why I keep asking you to react to the 2 ACAPELLA groups Scott co-founded!
      Citizen Queen and Acapop Kids!. All of PTX are AMAZING in their individual endeavors! Mitch is very popular especially because of his unique voice! I love Mitch but my faves ALWAYS are Scott and Avi.

    Hello Saucey Dad, So good to see PTX Sing Off Number 4! This one is epic - has more of PTX vocal effects, the singing, Mitch getting to share some of his sweet tones, the arrangement, those techno sounds and the cute choreography! Representing Sonos by performing the song they wanted to do shows PTX have a heart of gold -- actually they have five hearts of gold. Sean from Boys II Men invited to Kevin to play cello with them at the CMA in 2021. These judges must know of PTX success - they have 3 Grammys!!

    Pentatonix performed 12 songs that were judged and Mrduckbear11 has them numbered for you. At the beginning of the competition only half the groups performed in each show and later on each group had to do two performances per show, so the numbers don't represent the episode number. The groups also combined in a group performance at the beginning of each show, and Scott in particular has a larger part in the group performances every week (he was PTX's designated leader on the show). In the finale episode, the three remaining groups each did one last song and also a song with one of the judges (PTX performs with Nick). There is also a group opening, a Top 10 Girls song (with Kirstie on her own) and a Top 10 Guys song. Then Mrduckbear has an 18-minute segment with the judges giving comments about the top three groups, a retrospective of each group's journey on the show, and the announcement of the winner. A week or two later, there was a Christmas special with groups from all three seasons performing in various combinations. And in season four (which was two years later) PTX came back for a special performance that is really worth watching (and if you watch the whole video you can see them coaching Home Free)

    This song has a special place in my heart. Its the song I discovered them with on the sing off and I’ve never looked back all these years. I was so happy when they won. Finally a reality competition show got it right. Didn’t help their career given that their new label that they won dropped them a week after winning the show. Everything they have today is what they built up themselves. Recording videos on an iPad, sitting on the couch and throwing them up on RUclips for the small amount of fans they got from the show. They really are a story of success. I can’t believe some people think they were handed a career. They were given the exact starting place as home free and voiceplay.

    SauceyDad, on your comment about the number of performances: part of the reason for this larger number was that the Sing Off increased the number of teams competing from 8 teams in Season 1 to 10 teams in Season 2 and when PTX competed there were 16 teams. The Sing Off had been notified that Season 3 would be the last season but due to the overwhelming response to PTX, the Sing Off was extended to a 4th Season which is the Season that Home Free won which again only had 10 teams competing.

    The thing you thought you missed is because of how the competition was set up, There were many groups spread over a couple weeks for the 1st performance. After it was narrowed down, they had enough time to fit both the 2nd and 3rd performance into the same week. After further narrowing it down, the two different groups of performers combined and had a weekly performance for the 4th, 5th, and 6th week. Once it was narrowed down again, there were 2 performances a day till the end. So it made it seem weird for the 2nd weeks' performance to be referenced as last weeks performance when watching the 4th one. There's also the fact that the taping cut out the harsher criticisms made during performance, and then showed some of it the following week.

    • @janeramirez8767
      @janeramirez8767 2 года назад

      Yes, thank you for pointing that out! Also, sometimes there appear to be some non sequiturs in the judges' comments--that's because of the editing. It wasn't just the harsh comments that were edited out. With so many contestants at the start, and the judges sometimes having quite a lot to say, we heard only a sampling of their comments. I've looked for a video with the uncut comments, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't exist.

    This one really impressed Shawn. At one point, later in the competition not sure when exactly, he made reference to them making themselves skip. There are 12 performances because some of the show's had them doing 2 songs from different genres. Don't know if you've seen 1-3 but they're interesting just to see the growth. This particular one is one of my favorites just because to me this is when they really clicked.
    The producers wanted to keep Mitch in the background because he's gay😡. But he gets his moment to shine. 😅It isn't in his higher ranges. I don't believe he had really worked a lot on his killer high notes much.
    If you're not aware they went back the next season and was kind of mentoring the acts on that season. Home Free is one of the group's they talked with. That's just the kind of peeps they are.
    Great reaction per usual. Love your humor.
    Can't wait until you see some of the other performances😃. Thanks for taking us on a journey down memory lane.

  • @kayecastleman6353

    That comment of Ben's at the end was heard loud and clear by PTX. They were able to incorporate exactly what he was talking about in future performances in the Sing-Off and beyond, to great effect. I think it helped that the group was still in its infancy, and didn't have any established habits yet, good or bad. They were able to take on the comments of the judges and really shape the evolving sound and dynamics of the group.

    You didn't miss anything in the judges comments at the start of the video. We just don't get to hear everything the judges have to say. For one thing, there wouldn't be time within the limits of the show for all the comments to every group. For another, some of what's said wouldn't make a lot of sense to us, the layman viewer.
    As for the community self policing...well, we tend to do stuff like that. We don't do a lot of toxic...but that doesn't mean we don't now HOW. Lol. Come in here and start acting a fool, and we're going to let you know, in no uncertain terms, that you are one.

    The thing is, before this season, Sonos was THE non-collegiate acapella group in the US, especially in the LA area. They were already doing successful (small-venue) tours, as well as decent-selling albums/EPs-not chart toppers, but enough to support the group, which made them unusual in the genre. The show runners actually recruited them for the show. But, what they were known for was their use of looping and audio enhancing/distorting equipment in their performances. They producers told them that they would be able to do so on the show. Then, after they agreed to compete, the producers changed their minds. As a result, the group floundered and were booted after the second taping/3rd performance. They’re still together and renamed themselves ARORA. (You’ll see them in the audience cheering PTX on in later shows-Avi had started dating the blonde woman at the time!)

    I think Avi was dating the lead singer from Sonos at the time too!

    Interestingly, they lost their launching pad. Sony screwed them on the contract. They then RE-launched themselves via RUclips, making such a splash that they succeeded on their own.

    So the show producers puffed up any drama into a BIG DEAL, because they thought that controversy drew views. You'll see more of it later on: Kevin drama, Kirstie drama. And there was drama that was all backstage, but that made things more tense: there's a spot before one of the performances where the group goes to a youth LGBT support organization, and the producers kept the nature of the organization wa-a-ay in the background, and cut out Mitch's remarks about being a gay teen, so it comes across like his high-pitched speaking voice was the whole problem.

    They did not want Mitch to be "the star" of any of their videos just because of his sexual preference. Scott had not "come out" yet.
