Most, if not all of the others basically just sang part of one song, then part of another song and called it a day. PTX does stuff like this all the time now, but at that moment, this one was truly mind-blowing to me. Really enjoying your journey through the Sing-Off!
I watched this episode when it originally aired back in 2011 and recall being most impressed with Pentatonix' mashup. After re-watching all performances from the top 4, I still liked PTX the best but I do acknowledge that Urban Method did a really good job blending their two songs together. Of the four groups (including Afro Blue), I actually think Dartmouth Aires had the weakest mastermix. PTX did go above and beyond what I think the show producers and judges were expecting from the groups. This was the only time the show used this category in the entire run of The Sing-Off. I would disagree with your statement that PTX does this all the time now. They really don't. The closest examples would be "La La Latch", "Despacito x Shape Of You", "Save The World / Don't You Worry Child", "Winter Wonderland / Don't Worry Be Happy", "New Rules x Are You That Somebody?", and "Butter x Dynamite". However, they have done a lot of complex medleys, some of which conclude with a brief mashup.
At this point, I think they have wrapped up the win…the 12th performance (my favorite) was “icing on the cake”!!! BTW, the season 4 appearance is well worth the time👍 if for no other reason than to see Shawn rush the stage and establish himself as the very 1st Pentaholic🤣! Also, I can’t even imagine the positive influence that PTX had on the Season 4 winners…a little group that you may have heard of…HOME FREE….
Every body talks about 7, 10 and 12 (all great performances). But I think this one is highly slept on. I think it's a brilliant arrangement. I have seen some of the other performances and nobody did what Pentatonix did. They turned those 2 songs into 1 song. Geniuses. Thinking of you at your dentist appointment. I'm a dentaphobe too. You'll be fine.
Performance 2 is my least favorite. I, however, am a bit of a unicorn when it comes to the dentist. I have normally low blood pressure, and the staff freaks because it stays that way. I can sleep through a root canal.
They were worried about the transitions, but this sounds like it has always been one song. You might want to wait until after your pain meds wear off so you will remember your reaction clearly.
Loved your stank face for the first half of their performance. With regard to the bond between Avi and Kevin, when they were roommates right after the sing-off, it was Avi who worked with Kevin to help his singing and boost his confidence about singing in their videos. They really supported each other.

("La La Latch", "New Rules x Are You That Somebody", and "Despacito x Shape of You" are my favorite examples). In this one, you can also see how their background in musical theater helped them with the staging and choreography.
There is a 13th performance and the winner announcement, a Christmas special and a few return visits in season 4 the year Home Free won! I highly recommend that you watch all of them?
This has been one of their most underrated performances. They turned the 2 storylines into a conversation, and showed what they could (and did) become. Have always loved this 11th performance.

12th performance is the last to be judged, & the groups didn't get to choose their song from an assigned genre like before. It was "judges' choice" where the judges assigned a song according to how they wanted to challenge that group to prove themselves. When they started the next show, the judges already knew who was the winner. Performances 13 & 14 were just for the top 3 groups to have another chance to do songs of their choice & to draw out the suspense until the results were announced just before the end of the show. 3rd & 2nd place got to sing a snippet of something as a goodbye on their way off the stage, & then the winner got to sing their full chosen victory song.
This is were you should watch the other 3 groups to see what their competition was. Also the judges comments must at time influence the public’s voting which happens after the 12th performance.

Hello Saucey Dad. Thanks for taking us through this journey. "Special since the word go". Love that phrase. The judges spoke about Scott and Kirstie as the "lead" singers, but if you watch and listen closely you will see and hear that Mitch is singing with Kirstie, strengthening her part, especially when he is standing at the back bopping with Kevin and Avi.
Loved this performance and agreed with the judges again. They killed this. By the way, keep on saying whatever comes to your mind...that's why we keep coming back. Recover as soon as you can. We'll be here waiting.
Okay…so judge’s choice…one of their best performances. On that one…you realllly need to watch to the end. Makes me tear up every time. Please don’t forget.

So sorry you have to go through the dentist crap! I finally found someone who gets freaking anxiety like me. I'm the biggest chicken, had a very bad experience when I was 9 and he didn't wait until I was numb. My father stopped him (after I screamed) and took me out of there. I'm 58 and still never got over it. You'll feel better getting everything done. Can't wait for you to watch #12!!
I had to grab my 5 y/o daughter frim a dentist like that. She was screaming, And he was cursing at me in front of all these kids like a maniac...plus he overmedicated her with valium - 10mg for a skinny 5 y/o girl!!! Even the pharmacist was shocked. She had an opposite reaction to it & was wired & freaking out for 3 days!! My hubby had to grab me coz I was on my way to grab that jerk & show him you don't mess with my baby!! But I made sure all the other parents heard me saying what he'd done. I am the most chill person on earth. But that one day of my life I was gonna fight!! And my now 27 y/o daughter still has a phobia of dentists. PTSD. So I feel for ya!!

The thing is, we may *want* to replicate the chemistry between Kevin and Avi, but trying to do so would prevent Matt from growing into his full potential, which is huge. Matt already had formidable talent or he wouldn't have been chosen to join, but he is now well on his way to becoming spectacular. It's okay to miss Avi. But it would be wrong for Matt to try to *be* Avi. We want Matt to be the best Matt that he can be, just as Kevin is fully himself, and Kirstin is fully herself, and Mitch is, well, Mitch, and Scott leads with all of his considerable skill (bless his workaholic heart). We all know how wonderful Pentatonix is. And we look at the individual members and realize just how phenomenal each of them is. But Pentatonix wouldn't exist without *five* remarkable people, and when those five get together they create something that is greater than the sum of its parts. But each of them can only give their gifts to Pentatonix by fully exploring and knowing those gifts. Whatever benefits one of them benefits Pentatonix as a whole, and whatever hurts one of them injures Pentatonix. Let's avoid causing injury.

Avi & Kevin considered each other their brother, and still do. Kevin visited Avi at his cabin in the woods near Nashville several months ago and they spent a couple of days catching up. Kevin and Avi are fine. The trio doesn't communicate with Avi despite the fact that Avi's sister, Esther, stayed as their tour manager after he left in 2017 until 2019 when she started her family. As for the first copywrite issue I am afraid I think the person who wrote the music should be able to continue to sing it undoubtedly an old fashioned idea.
Okay you’re about to get to 12 the Mitch slap and I’d say the best of their season. Warning though #13 after that is probably their worst and I always cringe when reactors watch it without warning. So I’m here to tell you they couldn’t hear beforehand so they couldn’t find their key and sounded off almost the whole song. Also the song lacks a good melody which also hurt their sound. The whole band has also said 13 is their least favorite. So just keep in mind when watching 13 that the singing for the competition was already over after 12 and it was just a final performance that didn’t count for or against them. I personally would skip it but I’m sure people will want you to finish their journey.

I like this one. It has been left out by alot of other PTX fans saying watch 7, 10 and 12? This is brilliant and it is the episode where Kevin and Avi are christened Meat and Potatoes. A must see!

Avi & Kevin considered each other their brother, and still do. Kevin visited Avi at his cabin in the woods near Nashville several months ago and they spent a couple of days catching up. Worth remembering that the next one, 12 (Dog Days) is where the decision making on who stays and who goes switched from the judges to the public vote. So 12 was important, as those phone lines were open!
Please do watch the announcement episode after the performance episodes too, it is amazing seeing how they reacted to the build up and winners announcement!

What to you see the 12th performance…
I’ve heard they aren’t “friends” anymore because of copy right issues or stuff… hope isn’t true… like you said that kind of bond is unique…. And I do believe I still need Avi with PTX (even though I love his music)
Kevin is still friends with Avi. He has mentioned recently in a livestream that avi is one of his best friends and he was at kevins wedding and such.
Kevin and Avi are fine. The trio doesn't communicate with Avi despite the fact that Avi's sister, Esther, stayed as their tour manager after he left in 2017 until 2019 when she started her family.
As for the first copywrite issue I am afraid I think the person who wrote the music should be able to continue to sing it undoubtedly an old fashioned idea.
And three of them were just 19 here.
And the other 2 were 22.
Okay you’re about to get to 12 the Mitch slap and I’d say the best of their season. Warning though #13 after that is probably their worst and I always cringe when reactors watch it without warning. So I’m here to tell you they couldn’t hear beforehand so they couldn’t find their key and sounded off almost the whole song. Also the song lacks a good melody which also hurt their sound. The whole band has also said 13 is their least favorite. So just keep in mind when watching 13 that the singing for the competition was already over after 12 and it was just a final performance that didn’t count for or against them. I personally would skip it but I’m sure people will want you to finish their journey.
