The Mario Kart community calls this sandbagging. You do it to chain extremely good items and "item smuggle" them into higher positions you can't usually get them in where they are more useful. It's a legitimate strategy. Aqua learned from the best.
It's not just for items, it's also good for very quickly getting coins. Because when you're in the very middle, which is the worst spot to be, you get hit by a lot of items and lose a lot of coins, so if you are a bit back, you can quickly gather ten since everyone in the middle dies and drop coins for you to grab and since you quickly jump between the safest spots (back and front), you pretty much are at max speed the whole race.
@@Necroneer It's a game that's way less about RNG than people think. Like, RNG is obviously a big deal, but there's a very high skill ceiling to it, which makes it really cool to learn.

You mean an integer overflow (or an underflow in this case). You go beyond what the data format for the number allows so you loop around to the opposite end. A stack overflow would cause a memory leak, not make numbers do funny things.
Reminds me of this one friend who was pure skill at Mario Kart. He hung out in the back of the pack until he got a bullet bill, used his skill to get to the front of the pack and activated the bullet bill at a spot where he could put the controller down and got 1st place. If there was lightning or a Boo before he activated the bullet bill he still would have won. I didn’t know you could disrespect someone in Mario Kart, but he did it.
That's me in the game (xander)!! I remember watching her at 4am (ruined my sleep schedule over break) and decided to try to join her. When I got in i noticed she was in last place and ended up winning, I was like dang she's good. Then I decided to rewatch the game the next day and realized how insane that game was because she had the late start. GGs Aqua
I believe in Minato Aqua's power of destiny, it's not something you go against. Pro player is really good not just because of their skill, but it's also because of their luck.
@@cc9787 mario kart gives 12 place good items and 1st place trash items. Item smuggling is driving slow to get good items in 12th place, then driving good to catch up and using the good items when you're in 4th or something to crush 1st
I remember this being the standard strategy for short courses for cart games in PS1, used to do this with Chocobo and Crash team Racing the RNG for items becomes insane haha
Not worth to sandbag in CTR at all, unlike mariokart, comeback in CTR is harder. Rather than sandbagging, the best strategy in CTR is to nail all the secret shortcut (some are pretty hard to do).
I think she was the first one to sandbag like this. ToryWD does this a lot in some of his Item Rain videos. I was surprised to to see the bullet bill take that shortcut.
The comeback mechanics in Mario Kart were always crazy. On N64 playing against friends I would often make sure I was last in the beginning and item hunt for a super mushroom or lightning. Then I would race as normal, keeping it until the end. Even if you don't use any items, you can catch up because the others will attack themselves and avoid you for the most part. If you're good and don't make many driver errors, it's a great strategy.
Yea that's kinda amazing how she knows how the item dropping works if you actually stay in the back it's just waiting for the right items to show up and from there it's all about just a win
In all honesty, aqua is legit one of the best Mario cart player in hololive. During the competition between two teams, she practically carried the red team

Aqua's a speedrunner. It's that mentality that gets her to do her research. The only speedrun I know she did was Sekiro, but she's also gotten grand master equivalent ranking in mario maker co-op
She did dark souls speedrun as well. She's a diamond player in League of Legends, no-lifed Smash to get good (she was bad at the start) and beat the new character in record time, and got to a high level in Super Mario Maker. Not to mention the fact that she reached the highest tier in Apex as well.
@@konaccha calm down 💀, Aqua’s ranked Diamond at Apex, 1-2 tiers away from the highest tier (Diamond < Master < Apex Predator). And that’s still pretty impressive specially that she’s solo queuing.
Many things could go wrong with this strategy, since there is a ton of RNG involved. But in the end, it worked out. It would be fun if she tried that at the tournament, whether she succeeds or not.
While true mario kart's item distribution heavily favors those in the back to help catch up, 10 - 12th place will usually get bullet bills, blue shells, golden mushrooms etc. While the one in first usually get coins or mushrooms, few times defensive items
I know about the item distribution, i've been playing Mario Kart since i was a kid haha Since the N64 era (Mario Kart Wii is still my favorite and i watch the competitive scene as well) But i'm saying that there is still a lot of RNG, like getting shocked in the middle of a shroom shortcut, not getting your desired item, losing your items to a Boo, or even not being able to catch up if it's a short track.
Thats the reason why she went backward first, to higher her chance to get good items. Also iirc the rate is not based on the rank but by distance / how far with the 1st (cmiiw).
You can tell she really wanted to show off the BB extension, except (from what I know) Aqua isn’t the type of player who likes to explain her strategy like a shonen anime protag (I wish she did tbh. Would make her stream educational on top of being cute & bubbly) so a lot of her audience probably doesn’t know this technique and thought it was a magical “big brain” maneuver when really, it’s a known trick you can pull off with the right luck and knowledge and the stars aligned especially on the 2nd one.
@@AM-rs4yv True she got lucky with double bullet bill, then again there isn't much of the last place item pool that she didn't get. She did drive pretty clean for someone called "Baqua"

She's hardly world class, but she's well above average, like she is with most of the competitive games she genuinely tries to be good at.
Idk if you're joking or not, but try-hard Minato Aqua is quite possibly the best gamer in Hololive (its either her or FBK imo). It's just that sometimes she become Baqua naturally/intentionally for lolz and giggles and we love her for that!
It's normal for Aqua. She's really good at games and try hard at everything she plays. All the baqua memes isnt truly representating her. People just tend to clip her baqua moments than her pro gamer moment just because it's funny, thats why she's well known more for her Baqua in EN community.
As a few pointed out this is a big brain strategy for the item smuggling but also, (correct me if I'm wrong), if she's playing against ai there is what's called rubber banding. Racing games will slow down ai racers as they pull away from you to keep you in the race. Which helps this giga brain strat
To be fair we all know the trick to winning mario kart is to not win for most of the race, but like many others here it seems I was ignorant to the degree of effectiveness/common use of "smuggling" as it seems to be called. But yeah when it comes to execution and mechanics she's a pretty veteran and versatile gamer with good skills. Albeit more of a "I read this tactic online and I can execute it perfectly" type of gamer than a "I did the math and have found the ultimate strategy" or "Hmm I wonder if this could work.. oh shit it does" type.
