    Pulling one pin doesn't release both knuckles.
    Also, shoving bypassed knuckles would likely result in a derail.

  • @weekendrailroader
    @weekendrailroader 6 лет назад +11

    I think the only thing a bit incorrect on this animation is both knuckles opening when only one pin lifter is being pulled (the one on the left), and the drawbar springing side to side. At least on freight cars, the drawbar sits where it is, and doesn't spring side to side (unlike model railroad Kadee Couplers). Other than that, it's pretty dang spot on.

    When you pull the cut lever one one, both knuckles do not open. Only the one that you pull the pin on. I also don't get the bypassed couplers. That is a good way to cause a derailment. Been there, done that.

    So can it be assumed that in a real situation there are two workers involved....one for each side of the tracks to release the coupler on his side of the tracks?

    • @insylem

      I think the lever is connected on both sides of the rail car so that one person can operate from the same side of the tracks

    I don't understand how this coupling can manage to pull the great long trains in the US!
    Even made of good steel the shear load on the pin and moving jaw link must be fantastic?

    • @lowercherty
      @lowercherty 6 лет назад +4

      The pin just holds the knuckle in place when uncoupled. There are interlocking slides inside the body and knuckle that actually take the tension of a coupled train.

    • @johnblair8146
      @johnblair8146 Год назад

      Some of those pins are made of PLASTIC. the coupler is designed so that the coupler body takes the strain.

    • @jcl410
      @jcl410 6 лет назад +5

      Silver Scale Productions - Nope; every knuckle coupler has a lever to release the knuckle. In the video you posted, it's hidden by the frame. Many cars only have a lever on one side of the car vs a locomotive, which has one on each side.
      There are some couplers that have the pin coming out the bottom

    • @edfrawley4356
      @edfrawley4356 2 года назад

      @@lululolly Well the animation is wrong as there is nothing that would force the coupler to self center. The only way to get a coupler to be off center is to uncouple it on a curve such as when its just coming off or going through a switch which train crews are trained not to do.

    this isn't demonstrated correctly. the knuckle won't disconnect without both drawbars pulled and it definitely won't pull the cars with the knuckles not even remotely connected together

    • @chrisweiser6522
      @chrisweiser6522 6 лет назад +2

      When this kind of knuckle coupler is used (as in the USA), only ONE of the coupler pins needs to be pulled upwards. The crewman does not get between the cars; the lever can be safely operated from the side without danger of being run over. When two uncoupled couplers are going to be coupled, only one of the knuckles needs to be opened, but it works if both couplers are open. If a coupler is too far to the left or right to couple, there may be a problem with the underside leaf springs. Visit the Ridgway Railroad Museum the next time you'll be in southwestern Colorado.

    • @weekendrailroader
      @weekendrailroader 6 лет назад +1

      On the automatic or "knuckle" couplers like these, only one pin needs to be pulled to uncouple the cars. Also, in the case of the crossed drawbars, the animation isn't showing the cars being pulled, but rather the cars being shoved (pushed). If you tie onto a cut of cars with your locomotive, and then start shoving, and then stop, you might send a car (or cars) rolling away if there was a crossed drawbar somewhere in the cut of cars you tied onto.

    • @Malloriak
      @Malloriak 6 лет назад

      Эта сцепка старше нашей, она была изобретена американцами во второй половине 19-того века, наша вроде как уже ближе к 1930-тым. У этой сцепки два режима: как в анимации, 1) если смотреть сверху, правая часть(вагоны) опущена вниз, то её локомотив(слева) может толкнуть не прицепившись( например чтоб столкнуть с горки), если надо прицепиться, вагонную часть отводят в противоположную сторону и тогда происходит зацепление
