I have worked for 4 different veterinary hospitals and each and everyone was just as disappointing as the next!!
it was a business to them.. just like human doctors.. no different 😞
And I don't even want to tell you how many mistakes I witnessed due to complete negligence by the staff.
And do they learn from those mistakes?? Nope!
All I can say is please please PLEASE pay attention to EVERYTHING .. take notes (don't feel weird or embarrassed, this is your animal health and life!) ask questions and if you don't understand something, ask again.. do your own research, get second and even third opinions before agreeing to any type of aggressive treatment or any type of treatment at all honestly..

My big boy "Squishie" has been dealing with this (diagnosed by a vet) since he was a kitten and is now 8 years old. He's a sweetheart if you pet his head, but from the ribs down, he can (and will) bite/claw you. We've learned over the years how to pet him, and even my 6 year old granddaughter tells company how to pet him ("don't hurt our Squishie" lol). It can be difficult but it's manageable. We recently started him on cbd's from the company Ellevet and are crossing our fingers he gets some relief. Good luck to all the fur kid parents learning how to help/manage their babies' hyperasthesia symptoms ! 🐾❤️

Our cat does this since a couple of days. Somehow she has now fear of the outside. We noticed when she approaches our patio door and she hears or smells the garden she gets a seizure every time. When the patio door is closed she is fine. The thing is she is a outdoor cat and very active. Now she stays inside and seems to have no energy for playing/hunting at all. It's like she is a completely other cat now. Breaks out hearts.

Im not recommending anyone do this, just something I’ve found fascinating: years ago in college I had a roommate who smoked weed out the window. My cat would always run out and get her face seemingly wanting some too. I mean she was aggressive, she would jump on the back of the couch to be as close as possible. My cat appeared to get a second hand effects. Mind you, she is a rescue had frequent and intense hyperesthesia episodes back then. She would be totally calm for the night but still herself. Over time my cat and I built trust and when I see her having a moment I talk calmly to her and pet her shoulders. I have a hunch this is trauma related since she has a bent tail as well. Nowadays she’ll actually run to me for comfort 💗 No cannabis needed lol! (Please dont smoke around pets)

My two cats have this. They're mother and daughter. Two others I had from the same family also had it - one fell into the pool during a seizure and drowned almost two weeks ago (witnessed by other people - I was not there)...
My two girls have seizures every day now. My heart is broken and anguished from so much tragedy. I love my cats possibly too much and want to help them but nothing is working yet.

Just want to leave an update in case it might help someone: Since giving my mom cat (daughter cat no longer has any symptoms, got better on her own after I moved to new place - no clue why) Zylkene every day in food, she now only has seizures every three days or so. Going to switch to grain-free diet as recommended, hopefully that will help even more... Every three days (or less) is still so stressful, and my poor baby loses bladder control every time...

      @oasisranae 6 месяцев назад +1

@IIIISai sometimes cats with this condition have seizures. The seizures are a symptom.
I should mention also... I read that this hyperesthesia may be caused by crystals in their urine. So I bought some Purina cat food, the one designed for urinary tract health...after a few weeks, the bag was gone and nothing had changed, so I switched the food back...but then suddenly my cat stopped having seizures! Well, had one a month for two months!
Thought back and realized the urinary food probably took a while to work! So I bought some more of that as soon as I could, because she had started having seizures every day again....
On day 2 there were no seizures... It's been a couple weeks now and she's getting better again.
Just wanted to add that update in case it might help anyone!

@IIIISai my comment keeps disappearing...not sure why, and don't know if you saw it. Basically, I read about the crystals on a social media site starting with letter F, at a page called Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome (FHS). Then I immediately searched for urinary cat food since I was desperate. There is at least one other brand that makes it.

Finally, conversation on how bad commercial kibble is for pets!!
Not all kibble indeed but certainly best known brands are really unhealthy.
I look at kibbles as a MacDonalds for cats , yummy and addictive but certainly very bad in a long run. Some cats get health issues early (especially males, due to salt and preservatives in their kibbles ) some are later .
Even more there is no same standard for pet food as for the human food . Meat that goes to humans (“human grade”) is not the same that goes to pet kibbles .
I’m prepping my own food for my cats , with real meat . It’s not that hard at all . Ones a week mixing different types of meat and freeze it in one serving containers. Adding l-lysine and taurine- vitamins that are very cheap to buy in powder form .
Plz, for the sake of your kitties ( and dogs as well) do your research on your pets’ food.

This describe my cat to a tee. He actually had to have a piece of this tail amputated because he chewed it raw. He is now on Prednisone. He was first diagnosed with hyper active thyroid and put on medication which didn’t seem to help. Scratched his self raw under his neck and had to be prescribed antibiotics. Has lost a considerable amount of weight. All of these treatments in this video sound super expensive. I don’t know who could afford something like that ,but very very informative.

I have a rescue that has this. He developed it after we tried to adopt a cat for him to play with and this cat attacked him multi times and we had to take the cat back. Now, our cat is on cannabis which our vet suggested. This has helped greatly and we can tell when he hasn't gotten the correct amount as he's scared of ceiling fans or anything that's over this head (afraid of being pounced on). I recorded his episodes on my cell phone and took them to the vet. We changed his diet to Applaws wet cat food and Natural Balance dry and he got Purina Hairball Formula for a treat. This seems to work for us now. I didn't know anything about this condition until I had seen this video. My rescue cat was just a normal cat until this other cat that we tried to rescue from the shelter came into our house and started to attack our cat.
The people at the shelter had told us that this cat would be a good fit for us (after we explained what we were looking for and our current cat). After I cried taking the second cat back, they told us that they didn't know much about the second cat as he was one they had picked up from the street and now, they would tell others that he needed to be adopted into a house that had no other cats. So now, we deal with it.

Thank you so much for this video. May I share my story and also have some questions? I adopted my cat Bibi since he was a kitten and when he was young seemed that he got itches (and even some skin drying) whenever he ate any cat food which consisted of mackerels.
He's 5yo old now and has been eating Royal Canin Renal (Dry Food) for the last 1 year due to his special kidney condition. Just yesterday morning, we ran out of that food so I bought dept. store wet food from nearby supermarket due to emergency (which I just realized that it has mackerels in its ingredients after I fed him that). Few hours later, he ran around, twitched, meowed so loud, shivered, scratched his head and chest, panted a lot like a dog. I tried to comfort him but he ran away and hid from me. After he did those unusual behaviors, he slept for 2 hours, woke up, and started doing it again for few minutes, then got back to sleep.
This morning I took him to a vet and she said he's in healthy condition (no fleas, ticks, fungi, normal temperature) but he got allergy from the substitute food, and prescribed him chlorpeniramine for a week. After I gave him that pill, seems that he's now very drowsy and very quiet.. not as usual (he's a very active kitty). I am very worried about this situation and would like to ask second opinions from you:
    1. Is it normal if he has healthy condition after such crazy and unusual behaviors?
    2. Is it also normal for him to stay quiet after he takes his medicine?
    3. If the unusual behaviors happen again, should I let him hide away from me? I felt so sad as I wanted to hug him but he looked very irritated.
    4. Would this allergy gives a really bad effects to his kidney?
Once again, thank you very much..

To everyone that think this is Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome (FHS) it might just be from a food allergy. If your cat does this after changing their food to a different brand it might be a food allergy problem. Food allergies make your cat very itchy to the point they are very stressed out and tail chasing is a symptom of a very stressed out cat. Hope this helps some people not stress out like I did...

I took my 8 month cat to the vet because of strange symptoms. Sudden licking, running around as if he's freaked out, head shaking and ears flicking, tail twitching, hiding, rolling skin on the back. The vet immediately suspected Hyperesthesia.
I'm a bit scared, because it seems to get worse. First episode that we saw was when he was around 3 months and throughout those 6 months we only witnessed couple episodes.

My girl Ruby has feline hyperesthesia. She has had it since I adopted her when she was 4 1/2 months old. Funnily enough, brushing her back in quite a "rough" way stops an attack, and she actually loves being stroked on her back. Distraction also stops an attack, like playing with her or giving her a bit of my organic, home grown catnip. However, for all this, I need to be there and witness an attack, so when I'm at work or at night, I cannot always be there to do any of the above. I certainly noticed a decrease in attacks when she was on purely raw food, but because she is an extremely fussy eater, she is now on Royal Canin's Exigent (kibble) plus a bit of raw and some tinned food (Gourmet, but she only likes two varieties from the whole range!). I am thinking of putting her back on raw, but she *only* likes chicken breast! She will not touch turkey or lamb or fish or any other meat! This is one reason why I stopped feeding raw, because for her it was not a varied diet, what with eating only chicken....
Anyway, I just want to thank you for this wonderful informative video, and you are right about heavy meds like gabapentin should be the last resort (but most people are too lazy to try all the other things you mention first!).

Can this hyperesthesia come and go, or vary in symptoms? My cat does sometimes get jumpy/bites herself really suddenly, or goes from zero to 60 in 2 seconds. She'll stare at things that I can't see on the floor, and then jump up and run away after a few seconds. But, she loooovves being touched/pet and back-scratched almost SO much that's it's alarming on the other side of things - she's never not liked it. I can scratch her back with my nails - pretty hard - for a good 10 minutes and she appears to love it. She'll crawl around purring, with her butt in the air and try to rub her cheeks on the floor...sometimes she'll tip over, or fall off the back of the couch this way. And she rarely bites or runs away, or appears overstimulated...if I stop doing it, then she'll look at me and start meowing until I continue again, like "why did you stop???" I've never had her seem to become overwhelmed by it. So somtimes it sounds like she's FH but in other ways she is the exact opposite. She's pretty vocal in general, but more-so when you're not petting her than when she is being pet/engaged. Is she just needy and a super happy kitty, or nerve/neurological issues?

Can someone explain my cat doesn’t twitch at all or do any of these things but as soon as I lay my finger gently on his fur his body starts twitching and even though I’m just touching his fur he has a reaction to it what is this

There's this stray kitty boy. Very friendly. He liked being petted on the head soooo much. I knew better than to pet a stray's back. One day I think he moved, and I touched his back, he just suddenly bit me, almost punched a hole in my hand.
The other day I saw him again, the skin on his back was "moving like waves/rolling"? Now I know that's exactly what rippling is.

My cat has been twitching. I noticed it today, she was on my bed and I stood up to grab something that was hanging. When I went to sit down, I looked at her to make sure I didn’t hit her, and then I watched her side twitch in 3 different places. I reached down to touch her and she kept batting and meowing at me like it hurt. Then seconds later she was fine and wasn’t in pain. Thoughts? I’ve never seen her act like this. But something seems off with her lately, she seems thinner, less energetic..

Thank you, this is very helpful! How long would one keep a cat on a new diet, before confirming it is not an allergy? I have excluded seafood for months now, and have excluded chicken for approximately one month. I haven't noticed a difference, but I was feeding her turkey (I did double check - I know many foods that say turkey also have chicken ingredients), so I am trying lamb next.
The best results I've seen is with a structured play time, and meals at almost the exact same time everyday. But I understand how hard that is with work - I live alone, and can't be home from work until 10 PM somedays. Other days, I'm out the door at 5 AM.

He was still purring and nuzzling, but his skin was looking crazy. He didn’t attack or anything, and I haven’t noticed anything else... is it just something to look out for at this point? I have a cat, he's a Chausie mix (Chausie's are part Abyssinian part jungle cat, he was an adoption I had no idea he was a Chausie at the time) who does this. Recently my neighbor had to go into the hospital and I took on his dog, who Cal is friends with. Already there is so much improvement. I have his back ripping on video and he does everything except obsessive grooming. Yowling, acting like hallucinating, tail chasing, running around when he was calm, hates his back touched. If anyone has a cat-like this and they don't have another pet, get one. Catnip if your cat has the gene is another huge help. Routine is important, I am actually starting to consider returning him to raw food after this, I just have no idea how I'm going to afford it unless I buy my own meat and do it that way. He's a 15 lb cat and I think he did do better on the raw. He's a great boy, very sweet but sometimes he gets wild. The next step is the vet, but with everything I've seen and listening to this explaination, I'm pretty sure I'm on the right track, but the vet will tell the tale. Thank you, Dr. Becker, for this awesome video since I'd already suspected it just hearing your description definitely makes me feel like it's time for a vet.

Great video, you cover a lot of issues. My cat started about 3 years ago chewing her legs, chewed the fur right off. Tried meds from vet and that didn't help. Then she started randomly jumping up and chasing her tail and licking her back. Tried changing her food, more vet checks, but what seems to be working is chiropractic. Her back was out in 3 places, caused her to feel numb and tingly in the legs and then the tail area. This feeling made her chew there the chiropractor thinks. Will be going for more treatments, hope it fixes it! Feel so sorry for her.

My cat reacts exactly as described for Hyperesthesia . I put her in a small harness (hoping to be able to take her on walks with me) and she became instantly more relaxed. She wasn't sleeping very well so popped the harness on her for a night, such a chilled out kitty. When she wears her harness I see no skin rippling, shaking or twitching or tail biting etc. She loves to go outside so I don't let her wear the harness then as I am afraid she might get hung up. I hope this may be of some help for others to try. :) :)

I have a 1 year old, male DSH, that has most of the symtpoms of hypersesthesia. He does get a small amount of dry food, but it's grain-free and natural, high-protein, low fat. He also gets canned food twice a day. I've found that his symptoms have decreased the more he goes outside and the more we play (play time is 3 times/day, for about 10 min each time) We go for walks (but not now because he just got fixed) so, it's helped by keeping him active. He's not at the excessive gnawing stage because when he does lick/nibble, I start to play with him. I also tether him to my [covered] deck so he can see all of the animals, try and chase the bugs, and watch as humans walk their dogs. He's been doing a lot better but, I started doing this before I even found out he may/may not have hyperesthesia, which in my research, seems more like he does. I'm going to try using the CBD oil I have as well by rubbing it along his spine (it is an ingestible kind).

My vet has been treating my cat for a few years because she said it's a flea allergy (she displays symptoms as said in the video, I was attending every month as they were giving her steroid injection and anti-biotics if she had an infection. They said I could manage it if I gave her the steroid in tablet form which I have been doing it works to some degree combined with her monthly spot on flea treatment but she can't stay on steroids for more than 5 months.
I'm wondering what is in the steroid that stops the itching and is there a natural form of it. I've recently caught my cat a few times having jumps up onto the worktop, looking for fat or oil in the pan after I've been cooking. They know what they need I guess! So I'll get some Omega 3 oil. She has both wet and dry food but she has always been fussy and doesn't like the 'meat' in any wet food. I do try to buy it with no colours, preservatives etc. I use the gravy to give her the steroid tablets. She does eat more dry food. (I'm sorry I ever started her on it).

But I think I will take her back for some bloodwork. I would love for you to see this it’s very unusual it’s all surrounded around her head. My cat has this issue. He is an adopted barn cat who for seven years has ONLY eaten a really cheap cat food, Kit & Kaboodle, which is what he was fed on the farm in Nebraska. We have tried switching him to better foods several times, and he refuses it, i.e., will swipe it right out of his bowl. Do we need to starve him into switching? He is an indoor-outdoor cat with what seems to be a very satisfying "lifestyle," great territory, places to climb, hide, etc.
