Jeter the Paralyzed Dog Makes a Complete Recovery

  • Jeter is a 5-year-old terrier mix who presented on emergency for a sudden inability to walk following a traumatic event with his furry sibling. He was evaluated at an emergency hospital overnight and transferred to SEVN the following morning.
On examination, Jeter was unable to walk in all four limbs. He was able to move his right pelvic (rear) limb but unable to move the other three limbs. He was alert, with normal cranial nerve evaluation and normal spinal reflexes. He did not seem painful. He had postural reaction deficits (knuckling over of the limbs) in all four limbs. This told us there was a problem affecting the cervical spinal cord. Possible causes for an adult, medium-sized dog with a problem affecting the neck include a slipped disk, fibrocartilagenous embolism, tumor, meningitis or acute non-compressive nucleus pulposus extrusion (ANNPE).
An MRI was performed, which showed an ANNPE. ANNPE is when a small amount of the nucleus pulposus (the inner jelly-like part of the intervertebral disk) shoots out of the disk at high speed and strikes the spinal cord. This can cause symptoms of wobbly walking, inability to walk, or even paralysis.
Surgery is not necessary for dogs with ANNPE. The treatment for Jeter involved time, rest, and physical rehabilitation. Jeter underwent physical rehabilitation with our team and has regained the ability to walk!

Such a great video. I can tell just how much you love this dog and working with all dogs who need rehab. I didn't really even know that this kind of rehab was available to dogs. I think it's awesome! I have a beautiful, 14-yr-old Lab and she is beginning to need help walking. I was actually exploring slings to help carry dogs, or to help them walk, when I came upon this video. May God continue to bless you and the wonderful work you do.

I wish my vet gave me this kind of advice, all they told me was to try to stand her up occasionally and to stretch her legs. Thankfully my dog was able to walk anyway just three days after coming home and seems to be getting slightly better every day. She's a chihuahua though so maybe it's just easier for small dogs to recover.

did this doggy have surgery or just rehab. my 11 yr old pekingese is able to walk but stumbling around... mostly his right paws are affected. vet put him on pain meds and we're trying to keep him from moving around too much . he was almost normal the first week with no pain meds but now he has relapsed ... i think because..... even though i tried to stop him..... he was jumping off furniture and humping on his bed and may've reinjured himself. i've tried to keep him confined but he still gets up and moves some. i put blankets on the hardwood floors to give some traction ... but he slips on the tile floor. I don't know if i should let him walk or keep him still.

My dog is paralyzed and diagnosed as AAI since 2022 he got bitten by big dog. He can walk and run when he’s on his wheelchair and wag his tail but not perfectly. I’m korean and my dog’s vet do not teach me how to rehabilitate because he only wants my dog to do surgery rather than rehabilitation. But i didn’t let him do the surgery because first of all my dog is only 2kg so he can die during the surgery. Second of all the vet has never performed surgery on AAI. I still desperately want my dog to at least walk by himself like before 🥲 Can i know how this terrier recovered in more detail?

If only I could afford an MRI and therapy for my precious miniature poodle. She went from walking 6 months ago just fine to bed ridden just like this I have no idea why and the vet said they don’t either but an MRI is 4k just insane idk what to do it’s only money yes but to pay that if they can remedy anything is just super difficult. I wish someone had answers of what happened to her because her sister is 100% normal.

What would be the treatment for paralysis caused by a concussive injury and what would be the prognosis. My 19-year-old dog fell forward onto his face two months ago, blacked out and four days later could not use his hind legs. He holds them rigidly straight and thus, his front legs can't reach the floor. He also holds his head down. Please help!😢

He should ideally be evaluated in person by a neurologist to determine IF the problem is neurological, WHERE the problem is, and what are the possible causes. Only then can an accurate and appropriate treatment plan be formulated. Where are you located?

How long should we give for recovery? My dog is going through the same thing, the paws turned in and struggling to walk without me helping him. He’s on oral meds a week now. The vet said if no improvement within 48hrs then there prob won’t be. But the last few days he’s been trying to walk and is peeing outside. I feel terrible because besides not walking without help he’s moving around in his bed and watching everything. He’s been eating/drinking.

All I couldnt afford a x-ray because I had to go to a urgent care which still cost me 250 dollars
My dogs acting just like this one.she can barely stand but it's weird pecause she's showing no pain. I have to drag her out the house on a blanket and hold her to use the bathroom.
Do you recommend anything that can help

We are talking about £15.000 minimum . Even after that they don’t guarantee ur dog can make it l think not personally you but all you people do westerners just only money only that you guys got no feeling at all .
