"Sounds messy and kind of sad . . . So I'll more than likely really enjoy it." -- Jimmy Nutts. Happy reading, Brother!😁
Spot on lol
Glad to hear you’re feeling better, Jimmy! We’ll always be here to provide support.
Appreciate it!
The mental health ride is one thats almost impossible to get off of. Glad to hear you found an uphill portion.
Love your face ❤
Love ya Derri!
I tell you what son I love this guy Jimmy Nutts what an absolute unit of a man.
Edit: Also, Jimmy, you have grown an unbelievable amount as a reviewer of books, and I truly feel that your reviews are some of the most substantive on BookTube. 💙
Thank you man, it really does mean a lot to me
Amen to that!❤ we love you! You’re an extraordinary person
@@Glock19Atlanta thank you!
Always happy to see you post a video! I hope you're doing better, remember to take care of yourself!
❤️❤️
Glad to hear you’re feeling better. I might not be the biggest commenter or chatter but I still watch every video and chatting with nutts is always part of my morning routine when a new episode comes out. For October I read but have not completed Dry Bones in the Valley, and Heart-Shaped Box. Loving HSB. Dry Bones is alright. I am… very surprised The Bone Clocks was the Mitchell book you decided to start with, it being a wider explanation (?) of his shared universe. Lots of rewards for reading his other books in that one. Hope you enjoy the rest and read more Mitchell in the future, he remains my favorite author.
Good to see you man! And yeah BC was a bit random, I’ll be reading Slade House next!
So happy to hear you’re feeling a bit better😊
Thanks 🙏
Barbara Kingslover’s backlist is top tier. She’s one of those authors who has mastered every color in the crayon box.
I’m gonna read all of her stuff
glad to hear you’re on the way to doin better 👏🏼🎉 always love seeing the wrap ups and what’s on the docket. You always give me new books I’ve never heard about 👏🏼
I’m happy to help expand the tbr 🫡
Robert E. Howard is one of my favorite writers. After Conan, you should definitely check out his other work. He did far more than just fantasy. He wrote some great historical fiction and non-fantasy adventure tales as well.
I will for sure!
I'm glad to hear more talk about Book of the New Sun 👍
It’s amazing
Leaving Las Vegas the movie is pretty impactful. I found it cathartic.
Keep up that great range 🙌
I’ll do my best!
These wrap ups slap so hard jimmy, thank you for making this stressful day a bit less so
I’m glad I can help bro
Great video as always my man. Always love your wrap ups 🤙🏻
Thanks! I’m glad you enjoy them 😊
I love night of the mannequins! Glad you liked it!!
Yessss!
Leaving Los Angeles sounds insane, might have to give that a go. It reminds me of the visceral approach to storytelling I've read in books like The Great Alone (another harrowing story about three generations of women and their lives in Alaska)
You may love it!
Dude, The Killer Angels is one of the best historical fiction books i have ever read. Glad you read it.
The Left Hand of Darkness is my favorite LeGuin, The Dispossessed is close though.
It was amazing
I am so glad you are doing better. I have my own struggles especially in the fall. We have to keep pushing through and keep reading!!
Absolutely!
Cloud Atlas is one of my all-time favorite books!
That’s awesome!
Thank you ✌
Jimmy Nutts, Dudebro Sensitivity Reader.
I need to make a LinkedIn
Good to hear from you, take care and happy reading!
Thank you! You too!
Thanks for another fun video. I had the same experience with night in the lonesome October. I did not quite get into it. But it was a fun book!
Thanks!
As for myself, I’m finally tackling Fitz and the Fool. I’m currently a little over halfway through Fool’s Assassin and I already have that bittersweet feeling of this incredible journey coming to an end. I’ll also be reading The Ice by Ryan Cahill and Circe by Madeline Miller at some point in November. Happy reading to you, Jimmy!
Happy reading! Enjoy FATF!
Glad you are back, Jimmy!
Me too!
I loved Killer Angels! I'm glad you enjoyed it. The follow-up books by his son, Jeff Shaara were fantastic as well.
I'm not all that far from Gburg either, I go there about once every two years because Civil War is one of my favorite subjects to read and learn about.
But it's a fun town to visit, I can't wait to hear about it if you decide to go.
Thank you!
Always happy to see you Jimmy, I could have listened to this at work but I wanted to get home and sit down to really enjoy it.
Great reviewing and the best variety of reads on this side of booktube. Respect
I greatly appreciate that
Yes! Demon copperhead is going to be a top book of the year for me. Happy you’re spreading the word. Enjoy the reads!!! 🎉
It may be in my top ten too!
Thank you for sharing your experience with "The Left Hand of Darkness". I'll save it for a time when my brain is more relaxed. I will try "The Tombs of Atuan" as soon as posible as Susanna Clarke mentioned it as a inspiration behind "Piranesi".
Yesssss
Also The Killer Angels is absolutely brilliant and you should absolutely watch the Gettysburg movie before you go to the battlefield. My brother and I did that and it made going there a pseudo spiritual experience since most of the movie was filmed on the actual battlefield. It makes you feel like you’re stepping through history!!!
I’m excited to go back to Gettysburg
Here's what I read in October
The crossing by Michael Connelly
Im glad my mom died by jennette mccurdy
It by Stephen king
Stone blind by natalie hayes
All of us villans
Romantic comedy by curtis sittenfeld
The ex hex
Black candle women
Clown in a cornfield by adam cesare
A shadow crown by melissa Blair
You're not supposed to die tonight by kalynn Bayron
Glad you are on the upswing Jimmy!!!
Me too mate
Glad you’re feeling better Jimmy!
Thanks man
I think we had similar feelings about The Left Hand of Darkness.
I’m excited to try her other stuff!
Glad you are feeling better! I read Night of the Mannequins after hearing Murphy talk about it and while I didnt love it like you I thought it was pretty good.
I think the subtle hints throughout the book were so clever
Im loving your videos!! 🎉 please upload more often 🙃
Haha I’ll try!
I love that you loved Night of the Mannequins, and it got the Nutt Button!
NUUUUUUTT
Glad to hear this month is looking better than last for you, Jimmy!
I love Left Hand of Darkness, but totally agree it is a bit all over the place and not the easiest entrypoint for the Hainish cycle. Hope you continue to enjoy her work.
I'm currently reading Grass by Sheri S Tepper, a nominee for the 1990 Hugo award, and I'm really enjoying it.
Thank you friend!
Its great to see you are making a comeback. My spouse has dealt with chronic illness and it is not always easy going, but she stays positive the best she can. Keep on keeping on Jimmy 🥜🥜.
I’ll do my best and also best wishes to your spouse
Hi Jimmy. I hope you're doing well after the holiday weekend. All the best to you. Btw, I'm still turning the pages!
Thank you!
It’s been awhile since I watched any book related content and you’re always a breath of fresh air Jimmy. I’m reading Book of the New Sun at the moment and what a coincidence. Have a great day.
I appreciate it!
Great wrap up Jim 👌
Thanks Al!
Glad you are feeling a little better!
Thank you!
Hey Jimmy! So thankful that you’re having a better month!! This month I’ll be finishing Words of Radiance but honestly I think I’ll be mood reading the rest of the month. 😅😅
I have no real plans.
Mood reading is the way!
No one understands the play in Claw. If they say they do they are lying. I have had it "explained" and I still don't understand. I still loved the book.
Yeah I’d say I pretty much loved it despite the play, and tbh I don’t know if I even care to understand it now cause I don’t wanna read it again lmao
Nice video Man! I tried to read The Legend of Sleepy Hollow for my October spooky read, I was underwhelmed with it
Dang sorry to hear that!
We love in a nuttshell! I’ve been curious about Demon Copperhead for awhile maybe have to move it up the tbr
If you’re in the mood for a chronicling slice of life type deal, you’d be hard pressed to find something as good imo
I absolutely loved the beginning of this video and I'm happy to see some reviews rolling out my man. Furthermore, you would totally recommend a book like Leaving Las Vegas to someone like ME. lol. Awesome video Jimmy.
Thanks dude! I doubt I’ll do much outside of these videos once a month and CWN for the foreseeable future, I think it’s a good balance
@@thefantasynuttwork I agree.
Swan has said that he's working on a new series set 200 years after Empire of the Wolf in a more flintlock setting.
Excellent
Your plans for more le Guin warm my cold, bitter heart
I’m glad! Hahah
My favorite Stephen King book is Needful Things. IMO it's his best work in terms of small town worldbuilding. And sure, the ending is weird, as per usual 🙂 Highly recommended if you haven't read it!
I definitely wanna read it!
So glad to hear that the days are looking a bit brighter for you. Hope that upward trend continues ☺
Loved hearing your thoughts on all of these books. I am quite tempted to reread The Justice of Kings and give it a second chance, because I think it was a case of wrong book, wrong time when I read it and I just couldn't get invested. Also totally sold on Night of the Mannequins, I've been meaning to read more SGJ for ages!
Hope you have a wonderful reading month in November!
I hope you like NOM!
Great to hear you're on the way to feeling better :)
Also glad you liked Left Hand of Darkness and are planning on reading other books from the Hainish Cycle. She is my favourite writer and it's always fantastic seeing other people experience her for the first time. The Dispossessed is PEAK LeGuin, as is The Lathe of Heaven.
As for the November book pick - Coetzee is a master! And Disgrace is a bit challenging with the topic it covers at times, but also it is an easy 5star book for me. I understand why he won the Nobel Prize in early 2000s.
Enjoy your November reads, stay on the track and to quote this dude from BookTube... remember to always keep turning the page ;)
Hey that’s a great quote!
Jimmmmmy!!!!
A nice diverse line up of books you read during October. I read A Night in the Lonesome October when I was a kid because there were a bunch of monsters on the cover, but don't remember anything about it. I'm currently reading through Yumi and the Nightmare Painter and so far it has just been ok for me. The way people talked about it, I thought I was really going to enjoy along the lines of Warbreaker but it's just been serviceable so far.
I'll be interested in hearing your thoughts of David Mitchell on your next wrap-up since he is someone I've heard good things about but never read.
Looking forward to your November videos. Glad to hear you are doing better this month.
Thank you! I can say 200 pages into Mitchell’s book and I’m borderline in love lol
Glad to hear you're doing better Jimmy! The past couple of months have been hard on me and mine, and I didn't even realize how much until it cought up to me... We just gotta keep trucking!
This month I read Tombs of Atuan (Le Guin continues to blow me away), Discipline is Destiny by Ryan Holiday for my non fiction fix, and Empire of Silence which I've been meaning to get to (Ruocchio delivers a straight banger and I hear it only gets better!) I also started Claw of the Conciliator but had to put it down for now, it just wasn't keeping me.
I feel like I'm the only one not reading Brando Sando's secret projects yet lol! I wasn't too stoked on the previews so I've been holding off, but I'm glad people seem to be enjoying them.
Tombs is sooooooo good
Some great books for October.
Glad things are going in the right direction.
Thank you!
You don't know how happy I am right now.
I need to get myself that copy of LHOD, because I really want to read that foreword.
I'm also happy to hear you're feeling better. Here's hoping that trend continues.
I knew you’d enjoy that!
So happy you loved Killer Angels as much as I did! I haven’t read anything else on here but I have Left Hand of Darkness on the shelf and can’t wait to try that and all her sci-fi
Congrats on da win
@@thefantasynuttworklol I made this comment before continuing on to the raffle-what a fun moment that was for me after tuning in month after month with some hope. Your patron raffle is just so fun, thanks for involving us that way! 😊
I read Leaving Las Vegas over the weekend after hearing you mention it on your discussion with Storytube and I was totally immersed and deeply engaged while reading it.
It's not really something I could consider recommending to most people, but I really can't get enough of well told stories with the type of vibe that LLV or maybe a Cormac McCarthy book has. I wonder if there is some kind of niche sub genre label to easily find those types of books.
Really compelling story. Appreciate you putting it out there for others to consider checking out.
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! It’s a very effective book and I think in many ways feels true
Yes! The Killer Angels! That was a finalist for my book of the year last year - such a gripping story and so well told. I'm glad you enjoyed Robert E. Howard's writing, too; I think he's vastly underrated. Over the last two years I periodically read through all his Conan stories and a huge collection of other short fiction. I love the writing, and yes, some things don't age well, but overall I think are more important reads than most people give credit.
I’m super excited to get deeper into Conan!
Glad to hear you are doing better… continue to fight the good fight and remember that you aren’t alone in the struggle. Find your tribe that get you and accept you as you are ( they do make a difference) and hold on. You actually jumped on the Conan bandwagon? I am impressed.
Thank you tons!
Glad to see that you're improving Jimmy. I know the black dog well, and it's a cruel thing to go through.
I went on a Halloween horror binge throughout the month, I read a bunch of horror novels and comics that I'd been meaning to get to for a while. It's a tradition that I've been keeping for the last several years. I do think it's cool that you read The Killer Angels, that's one of those books that, as a Civil War buff, I'd been wanting to read for several years now.
As for Leaving Las Vegas, I haven't read the book but I absolutely love the movie. It might be one of the most profound films I've seen that explores two broken people making a connection with each other. Also if I remember right, O'Brien died by suicide after he learned it was being made into a movie. It's a horribly sad story.
Sounds like you had a productive month. Keep up the good work Jimmy!
The book is well worth the read
Killer Angels is good, and it is the basis for the film Gettysburg. Pretty much spot on adaptation.
I watched it in school, need to do a rewatch
Loved that film. Saw in the theatre twice.
@@thefantasynuttwork
Have read a bit of Civil War history. My brother has been to Gettysburg. He stood at the bottom of the hill of Pickett's charge, looked up and went 'you have got to be kidding me.' Have been to Ft. Sumpter. A little anti climactic but it was shelled daily for 4 years. GI Joe Retaliation was not filmed there....
Have read several LeGuinn. Her writing is very economical. And while the story may be lacking, the ideas presented are fascinating. Lathe of Heaven is also incredibly topical even today.
I’m most excited for Lathe
Awesome background library
hey thanks!
I'm glad you feel better. I've "Sandkings" in an italian Martin's short stories anthology since 2008, and thanks to you I've finally read it, really really good. Beside the other 6 stories in the book, also good I must thank you for "Station Eleven" too, amazing. I also read and appreciated: "Murder at Spindle Manor" by Morgan Stang, "Return to Edan", and "Orb Sheptre Throne" by Esslemont.
So glad you enjoyed those!
The Dispossessed is one of my favourite books of all time - probably tied with Tehanu as my favourite Le Guin (and Le Guin is my favourite author) so I can't wait to see what you think! The Lathe of Heaven should also be on your radar if you're doing a "Le Guin Best Hits" tour
Lathe is actually the one I’m most excited for
I enjoyed "yumi and the hard-core legalism of religion she had to deal with" part. Had me thinking about it long after I finished. Funny to hear that u read it! And said you'll never think about it again haha. Have missed ur videos.. I've had to become a workaholic with a big boy job past 8 months. (At least I've been able to afford books ;]) Much love bro. pray you and yours are well!
Thank you!!!
I also liked The Justice of Kings! I've been meaning to dive into GRRM's other works, and Sandkings is definitely high on the list. Glad to hear you're doing better!
Thanks! Sandkings is so short but so good
I'm with you 100% on Yumi. A lot of my enjoyment (almost all of it honestly) was from the illustrations in the Kickstarter edition. It's not a bad book by any means, but it's just a miss for my personal taste.
The art was phenomenal
My first read through of the Left Hand of Darkness was underwhelming, I’m not gonna lie. But after three read through, it’s one of my all time favorite books. It’s such a wonderfully layered text. I’m glad you enjoyed it! I’m excited to hear your thoughts on her other books. Definitely be sure to check out her short story collection “The Wind’s Twelve Quarters.” All the stories I’ve read in it so far have been excellent!
I’m so happy you are enjoying Kingsolver’s Demon Copperhead! I’m excited to hear your thoughts on it!
Demon Copperhead will be in my top 10 books of the year easily
Great video! I watched the video when it came out but forgot to comment, Gene Wolfe is an author I'm certainly interested in reading his work but never found the right time since I'm reading less nowadays
Thank you! Wolfe is a doozy, extremely in depth writing
Nice to see you again Jimmy. Happy to hear you're a budding fan of Stephen Graham Jones. I thought ...Mannequins was a clever, wicked little book. (I LOVED The Only Good Indians). I've hit my own rough patch emotionally of late. I read 85 pages of The Lies of Lock Lamora and was enjoying it, but as my moods deteriorated, I couldn't push through right now. I started and hated Dolores Claiborne by Stephen King. That's a hard DNF. I've started Flanders by Patricia Anthony, a New York Times Notable Book from about 20 years ago. It's a WWI novel with a dash of fantasy, enjoyable, with a slow burn approach to plotting. I intended to make this month Non-Fiction November, but I got so bogged down I'll settle for reading Arctic Dreams by Barry Lopez. Happy reading.
Happy reading!
If you are looking for more short stories to read, Bradbury, Harlan Ellison, Poe, Lovecraft, and George Saunders are just a few authors who were masters in the short form.
Love Poe!
Very glad to hear you are doing better Jimmy!
October started slow due to me having to learn the ropes at my new job as a Librarian, but I finished strong «The Silence of the Girls» by Kat Parker (the Iliad from Briseis' perspective), «Return to Edan» by our dear Professor Philip Chasem «Tehanu» (Earthsea book #4) by Ursula K. LeGuin and currently reading «The Name of the Wind» by Patrick Rothfuss!
I appreciate it! I love Tehanu btw
I am with you on the Yumi ending! It also ended up taking a while to pick up for me. I enjoyed it but nowhere near as much as Tress.
I think it’s about same as Tress for myself because there’s a part of Tress I loathe lol
@@thefantasynuttwork I loathe the same part 😂
The Left Hand of Darkness is one that I've read twice and it is a book that I, with my reading tastes, should absolutely not enjoy. Yet... ! I thoroughly enjoyed it both times that I have read it (first time was for a college class, so I re-read it like a year ago to see if it held up... it did!). It's really random and surprising to me that I like it AT ALL. lol
Oh that’s so cool that you do though! I feel like I could get a lot more out of it on a reread. Even just the setting alone is enough to keep me intrigued haha
Great video Jimmy! Glad to hear you're feeling better! I actually just finished reading Leaving Las Vegas, I agree it's bleak and lingers with you. I head John O'Brien took his life 2 weeks after the movie went into production. Just curious, any interest in reading the first few books in the Wild Cards series? Eighties series connected to George R. R. Martin.
Yes eventually!
Bone Clocks is the only David Mitchel book I've read and I thought it was pretty damn good. He has an off-kilter way of storytelling and his prose is just exquisite. I need to read it again sometime because I feel there is a lot to that book that went over my head lol. I am really interested to hear your in depth thoughts on it.
Finished it and I think it’s tremendous
If you want a depiction of alcoholism read Angela's Ashes, you won't have a drink in weeks afterwards. But it's a classic and an amazing book...
DISGRACE is one of the best novels i have read. I remember i was invited to this birthday party and i arrived very late because I couldn't stop reading until it was finished. Shocking and an eye opener about the end of aperheit in South Africa.
@@carlosbranca8080 oh I’m so excited
Demon Copperhead has been my favorite read this year. I primarily read fantasy, but kingsolver did such a wonderful job with character work and storytelling, it trumps everything else I have read this year. Love that you are reading it!!
Finished it today, wonderful
Random sidenote, have you read or heard of a book called A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World by C.A Fletcher? I have followed your channel for a couple of years and believe you would enjoy this post apocalyptic story.
@@alfozz8498 not yet but I’ll check it out
I'm glad to hear you are doing a bit better. Keep taking things one day at a time. Or one hour at a time. Or the next 5 minutes, if that's all you can do. (I've been there.)
Thank you so much
I really need to get into some 80s fantasy/scifi classics like Wolfe.
It’s WILD man
❤

So many thoughts on this video. We’re not so different, you and I :)
1) I think Claw of the Conciliator is widely considered the weakest single installment of New Sun. Don’t worry, I think you’ll have a damn good time with Sword of the Lictor, which I think is the one that works best on its own.
2) A bit surprised Lonesome October didn’t work as well for you. I’ve not yet read it but it’s widely considered one of Zelazny’s best. Good on you for being honest about it, and I hope next year it goes better for you :)
3) Funny enough, Bone Clocks was my first David Mitchell. I confess, I found it a bizarre starting point (and I’ve heard other Mitchell aficionados say it’s not the best starting point). But if you’re loving it that bodes well. I need to reread Cloud Atlas, which I think I’m finally smart enough to enjoy :)
Stay awesome, Jimmy. I always appreciate your thoughts. Your a bright personality and a shrewd reader, and I think BookTube is better for having you :)
I very much appreciate that Paul!
The Killer Angels is now on my radar thanks to Steve Donoghue and to you, and I really need to dive into Le Guin's SciFi, as I put it off for far too long. Lately, most of my reading is non-fiction, mainly history, but at the moment I'm clearly feeling the beckoning of fiction.
You’ll not regret Killer Angels!
@@thefantasynuttwork I get the feeling I won't, but it's not a priority right now. There's a long list ahead of it 😁
I've set some of the thicker Fantasy books I was reading (Wise Man's Fear and The God is Not Willing) aside to focus on some self-contained stories, unfortunately I started too many 😅
So far in November I've finished;
*Sci-Fi*
Flowers for Algernon / Daniel Keyes
I'm currently reading:
*Classic*
Three Musketeers / Alexandre Dumas
*Fantasy*
To Ride Hell's Chasm / Janny Wurts
- I'm only 50 pages in but I could see this becoming a favourite, I can feel it in my bones.
*Flintlock Fantasy*
Lightbringer 1: Black Prism
- Honestly, so far not so bad.
*Horror*
Hide / Kiersten White
*Literary Fiction*
Queen's Gambit / Walter Tavis
*Sci-Fi*
The Prestige / Christopher Priest
At least the last 3 I mentioned are short 😅
Huge month!
I enjoyed Leaving Las Vegas quite a lot actually. It's written very honestly
Yeah some of the passages were so emotional to read
Since you liked The Sunset Limited, and it's a play, i highly recommend you reading (if you don't find an audio) The Stonemason by McCarthy. It reads really well even being a play.
i definitely will! Thanks for the rec!
Dude bros reporting for duty!
🫡
Firstly I am glad you're feeling better. I must be an oddball because I thought Republic of Thieves was the best in the series so far. I understand why people love book one so much, but I actually prefer the more free wheeling character story of the sequels. The first book is plot plot plot and I think the sequels are much more about the characters and interactions and the dialog and banter just got better each book, in my opinion. Hope things keep moving forward in a positive direction for you and the same for your reading. Cheers!
Thank you so much
Yo Dude, Bro! (was feeling a "Brah!" coming but decided to stay classy.)
I read in October:
The Magician's Nephew by C.S.Lewis (Narnia Prequel)
Exo-Hunter by Jeremy Robinson
Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel García Márquez
Making it So: A Memoir by Sir Patrick Stewart (recommended for people who like Plays :) and the theatre. Only little Star Trek in it)
The Undead: Day 1 by R.R. Haywood (turning off the brain - labelled: "UK's bestselling zombie horror series")
it was a slow month, but I got a big-ass Reading Chair last week - so thinks should improve.
Thanks for the video.
That’s a fantastic month
I joined Michael K Vaughan's Cimmerian September and read almost all the Conan stories. I'll tell you that I feel saturated with Conan for a while and haven't read them all yet, but most of them were worth a read. I also finished the third Black Company novel, and I am falling in love with that series. That third book in particular had much to say about loneliness and human connection that I found touching.
White Rose is excellent
Have you ever read any Alice Munro? I’ve only read one story of hers, “Walker Brothers Cowboy,” but it was wonderful.
I have not!
Brb I’m gonna go to the gym and hit the “lat press”.
Right after you continue Otherland right?! Hahaha
@@thefantasynuttwork The lat press cannot afford to wait that long
My favorite read in October is all of us villans i really was surprised how much I enjoyed it definitely reminds me of the hunger games will be reading the sequel
My least favorite black candle women
Gettysburg is based on the novel. I will say that if you want to visit where Chamberlain fought on Little Round Top you're going to have to wait for a bit, since they're doing work on it to help preserve it and so it's closed until sometime in 2024. EDIT: It's mostly accurate to what goes on (although it's quite pared down and Chamberlain's heroics are a bit overblown) Glad you liked the book, it's been a favorite of mine for years.
Good to know!
Lathe of Heaven is great.
Can’t wait to read it
David Mitchell is a very solid author. The Bone Clocks is my favorite of his
It’s going very well
