- The American Heart Association says even bursts of exercise may not counter the unhealthy effects of sitting too much. Cardiologist Dr. Tara Narula joins "CBS This Morning" to discuss the new warnings about sedentary lifestyles.
My mother died of breast cancer and was overweight most of my childhood. My father died of advanced diabetes, heart disease and kidney disease. Both were very sedentary, both suffered from depression and slept a LOT. I remember feeling sad as a kid that they couldn't run around with me, that we'd go camping and just sit there. We didn't do things together, they watched me do them. I decided young that I didn't want to repeat that pattern, but as a naturally skinny person i was told I didn't have to exercise and wasn't taught to be active. I realized this past year that it was part of my identity to not be athletic or active. I didn't believe I could do it. I decided to change that, starting with yoga. I started cross country skiing, hiking, drinking more water and not drinking coffee. I feel so much better. Hopefully I will live a longer and healthier life than my folks and break the cycle.
Thank you for sharing this. I too need to start somewhere and I believe yoga would be it to push me.
you are not them, its basic knowledge that sedentary lifestyles will speed up mortality. i dont buy into genetics too much because everything has a cause and 100% of people that say something runs in their family fail to mention that their family never exercised, ate poorly, drank poorly, slept poorly, abused excessive amounts or drugs/alcohol etc. that leads to that "it runs in my family" mentality. When anyone eating poorly and all thee above will suffer the same fate because its a fact and it happens everyday and people are warned and do nothing about it.
This explains why I’m so depressed! 😭😭😭😭
You're amazing and I'm proud of you. Wish more people showed up for your parents.

All this does is just D motivates them even worse, saying that they’re no hope for you people that are up showered, driving to work getting out of their cars walking into a business setting on their desk working upright getting up moving around getting water going to the bathroom but there still up and moving. It’s like a dream to people that are really sick and have to be laying in bed.
Hi people i believe the best exercise is walking walking as much as posible is the best medicine may god bless us 🙏
need to walk at a brisk pace!!!
hmmmmm, why so?
Maybe if you’re 70+ or disabled/health condition but walking is not a substitute for actual exercise. It can accompany it but do not confuse it with actually exercising. They recommend a MINIMUM of 150 mins per week of moderate exercise. That means, walking not included in that and it’s the bare minimum. Ideally 60 mins daily of exercise and if you can walk a lot too, then great!
It's a start to a healthier lifestyle, so please refrain from such discouraging titles.

@@nineveh17 Congratulations! The temptation to give up is around the corner. I'm not an expert but I avoid movement in the evening, I prefer that during the day, at the office, I take a break every 45 minutes, go up and down 5 floors casually and do a few push-ups (I started with 3 and after 3 months I reached 20). I'm thinking of introducing jumping rope in the same break. At home I rest and walk the dog. Everything easy, without tranpitation.
@Just Name In 3 weeks, an athlete who took a break for several months gets back in shape. An adult over 40, sedentary, who hasn't played sports since high school, usually doesn't become active anymore.

I feel you. That’s how I currently feel. I work from home now because I have no car and I don’t have any room in my apt for any equipment. I’ve been working out at home by following workout videos her on RUclips. I do 30 minutes everyday weather it’s walking videos, dancing, I try to do hitting videos as best as I can since a lot of the moves are hard for me to do because of my weight so I make adjustments until I am able to fully do them correctly. the title of the video says exercise is not enough to undo the harm
@@Cam-wi3tp yes, that's because exercise then going back to sitting for 15 hours will undo everything you've just done, the title says one thing, the woman in the video tells you the other, stand up more, for every hour of being sat, stand up for 30, and move for 10. Being sat down for that long undoes everything.
This is what my physical therapist said. If you sit for hours, exercising for a little bit and then sitting for hours again isn't enough to undo the damage.
Part time work should be universal. It is criminal to make anyone work more than 20 hours a week
I agree

You don’t have to work even 1 hour in the USA. What country are you in?
Why is it criminal? If we want things, and we want our garbage taken, and plumbing working, people have to work. Do you expect things to happen without anyone doing them?
Not working is perhaps more detrimental to your health than anything else. People need a purpose.
A sedentary lifestyle is not just sitting. You can still be sedentary while standing all day as well. The difference between sedentary vs active is less than 45 minutes of daily exercise plus daily activities vs 2 hours of daily exercise plus daily activities

Yeah, the sad thing is you’re not taking in consideration some people can’t they start to get sick medication and then they’re basically bedridden throughout the day hard for them to even take a shower. I mean, how do you come back from that?
Working out at the gym with lifting weights and formal cardio are both great. But what really moves the needle for health is doing lots of general daily movement.
Stuff like going for multiple walks per day, climbing stairs daily at a moderate pace, standing more, parking further away, running closer errands on foot instead of driving, etc..
If someone is healthy, they should never be sitting/laying for an entire day. There should always be bouts of general movement throughout the entire day.
So what are the options for bus drivers? should they have to start driving standing?
If someone chooses that career, it comes with its pros and cons, which they should be aware of and adapt accordingly.
They would had to monitor their blood pressure and take beta blockers.
It's not just a bus drivers. A lot of people have jobs where they can't do them while sitting. Employers don't care. We might as well be machinery... We are what they need to pay to get the job done. As soon as they can make robots that can do everything a person does, there will be no jobs.
This is why so many Americans suffer from heart disease. She didn't even mention vitamin D deficiency issues either. I hope for the sake of future generations, we can move away from the 8-5 desk job lifestyle.
Most people get enough vitamin D. I was taking vitamin D because people like you got me thinking I might be deficient and I ended up with borderline toxic levels in my blood that had built up over the course of a few years
WHAT ABOUT 10 HOURS BY DAY OF EXERCISING?,DO YOU THINK IS TO MUCH??🤔🤔👁️👁️
If we can't undo it, then what's the point?
Stop being sedentary.
@@JasonBuckman When a person gets injured and is forced to be sedentary for a few years, it's disheartening to hear it can't be undone, that's my point. I'm going through extremely painful physical therapy now to get back on my feet and back to normal. My therapist says I'm doing well and have surpassed his expectations. So to hear it can't be done and all of my hard work won't change a thing is discouraging to say the least.
You can undo it, the point she's making is is getting 30 minutes of exercise a day isn't enough, you need to be stood up for half of the day, to be in motion and move all of the time. Exercising for 30 minutes then sitting down for 16 hours invalidates that 30 minutes of exercise. Therefore exercise isn't enough, you need to stand up and move, every hour of being sat down you need to stand up for 20 minutes.
@@TehLiquid I realize that now, but the headline of this video was very disheartening for me. I told my physical therapist and my doctor about this video and they both watched it and were a bit angry. They said as a doctor she should have clarified that her suggestions did not apply to those who have become sedentary due to an injury, or illness. It's my own fault though, because I should have known better than to click on a video like this that wasn't meant for a person in my situation. I guess at the time I was already so frustrated as to why I couldn't speed up my recovery progress that I sort of panicked when I read the headline. No, talk to your doctor first. But walking is a great exercise. Im overweight and began walking in place multiple times a day and walk my dog 1-2 times a day and I’ve lost weight and am in better shape. You can start small, 10 minutes is better than nothing you dont have to start with an hour. If your knees are okay, take the stairs. Everytime i have to go down i go back up then down so i get a little extra movement. You can even do things while sitting if you have any medical issues or pain

It's frustrating when you're active and doing all the right things and then you have the people you care about deciding to stay at home all day when they already have health problem after health problem. They don't f cking realize how much they're killing themselves and making it unlikely for them to get out of their own hole.
💯 man! That’s my wife unfortunately! She doesn’t understand that’s killing her!!
yeah, my mother I watch go down the same hole. She’s so busy and stressed she neglects herself but I have to realize I can’t help someone who doesn’t want help, or at that isn’t ready. Kinda took the stress off me because i myself am sedentary and I see what it does to you and I am now actively turning myself around. I use to be an athlete and once you’ve seen what healthy feels like, you definitely realize what unhealthy feels like and it’s the worst.
Well if they are literally home all day and have health issues this would also seem like they are on disability.
If they are on disability and do not work this kinda would make it hard to stay in shape.
Working out does not get you anywhere if you do not have enough nutrition.
Just with protein if you are 160 pounds you 90-100 grams of protein a day to build muscle.
This is not even getting into the vitamins minerals and antioxidants the human body needs per pound.
So Honestly getting in shape requires alot of money for healthy foods and working out.
But even both of those thing's do not mean anything if you have sleeping problems because the body need's rest.
In some cases that people are unhealthy even if they are lazy it may not be as simple as they don't want to be healthy.
In some cases they may not be able to sleep well so they have no energy.
In other cases they may not have the necessary healthy food to give them energy so they will not have it.
If the person does not have the energy how are they supposed to use it in a workout?
I mean you can only use energy you have and the body does require enough rest.
My point is just because someone is unhealthy and is inactive does not mean they don't want to be healthy.
To be truly healthy requires exercise a lot of healthy food's and enough sleep.
Also some medications make it harder to build muscle .

They tell you what to do right in the video. People want to jump right to "I guess I don't have to exercise then"
Well, it's 2024. Where are all the standing desks for our work places already??
Employers don't care. Unless you could win a lawsuit against them. For example your job causing carpal tunnel syndrome. If you get heart disease from sitting at your desk, all they have to do is say there is no proof it was specifically because they didn't give you a standing desk.

Just because you gym doesn't mean you have good cardiovascular health. I've been doing strength training enough but I feel only getting stronger not energetic since Stamina isn't there. Being active throughout the day can't be replaced and LISS Cardio is better for gen pop imho.
Agreed
Sry to ask if anyone noticed Dr Taras right eye like had a mark possible from home violence!?
My job requires me to stand 8 hrs a day. Except for 15 minutes.
This is great. I've been healthier than I've been in years from walking 10-15k steps. Some are weighted. Add in a little weight lifting and bingo!
**surprised pikachu face**
Asians (and Slavs) have the perfect solution- we squat more if we get tired standing..which is healthier than sitting..
Exactly 😞
Admit it who else is watching this while standing/walking
