I paint land scapes with acrylic. You can increase your blending time for the sky by using a mister or spray bottle with a fine spray or even prewetting the surface depending on what it is. If it's canvas you can spray the canvas just enough to make it damp and blend your sky. Will help if you don't want a streaky background.
"above all don't worry about it, just enjoy it." Most valuable advice ever!!! Job well done!
“Don’t worry about it, just enjoy it” - the best advice ever given. After all it’s our hobby, not life or death!
Too often we beat ourselves up, believing we’re not good enough in comparison to those professionals we watch on social media. I try to just remember what got me into the hobby and the smiles it’s given me along the way. Who really should care about what others think?
Keep crackin’ on Mel 🍻
Deffo gonna give this a shot. The more I watch the more I wanna.
You love terrain so much you put terrain on your terrain.
So nice to see a "Happy Chappie" :-) The backdrop was inspiring. Thanks.
It’s always fun to channel your inner Bob Ross! Great video!
Bob's proud of you, Mel. 🙂
That's a lot of happy little trees.
Channeling your inner Bob Ross is a great idea! They were some very usefull happy clouds. :)
That turned out great Mel, Bob Ross would be smiling
Rick B
Most calming watching you paint Bob.
Given a few ideas and a load of inspiration for forthcoming projects.
Cheers Mel, it looks to be working for you too,
Glad to see you cracking on. Enjoy your videos and watch them for techniques and tips.
Top notch, mate. You're not just channelling Bob Ross, you're channelling the Terrain Tutor I knew from before Covid. It didn't take more than a week for you to get comfortable on camera again, or at least you seem that way. It's great to see.
Its a good sign init
Also I couldn't have stopped myself from adding one tiny "Kilroy was here" on the painting ;) Nice to see you happy back Mel
Glad to have you back missed your videos.
Well, look at you with a full tutorial! Great to see you back in the saddle and taking things and a manageable pace
You really took to heart me saying you were the Bob Ross of Terrain building on the FB group the other day! lol!!!! Great job Mel!
That backdrop really gives the scene some extra oomph, going to have to try that sometime!
Awesome! I've tried photo-shopping some backgrounds into my shots but I think this an easier option for me. Also, I like landscape painting so that might help. Great to see that you're recovering well. Kia kaha!
Great job, great to see you more like your old self👏👏👍🏻
Dear Mel, WOW! Best Wishes Johnny
That’s amazing Mel !!! You have been an inspiration and given hope to the rest of us “horrible landscape artists!!!
Really helpful, Thanks. I’m going to start on an Armegeddon (40k planet) backdroå tomorrow.
Good luck!
This is a great and very unique tutorial, thanks Mel for getting into this part
This is super inspirational! I am going to make one of these. I might use some gesso first, so there is some texture on it. However, it's just the backdrop so I can see why you want it low fidelity.
Brilliant, simply brilliant
An idea: what if you set your terrain in such a way to stage a backdrop. Shoot it against an all sky backdrop. Print out the photo you took to a large size (tiled onto several sheets of paper if needed), assemble and mount it to a backdrop board for a more realistic backdrop that matches your other terrain. Some simple photo editing can help as well - blurring the backdrop slightly to represent a further depth of field, and fading the image and tinting it towards blue. As the landscape recedes there is a greater volume of air in between your eye and the distant object. The air in the way tints distant objects blue - it’s something called atmospheric perspective. 😁
Thats some next level backdrops mate
Nice! Will you be showing us some photography tricks next Mel? Like lighting and how far away the lens should be from the subject, etc...?
Brilliant mate. I need to do “French countryside 1944”. For sci fi games I got myself an A0 poster of a nebula printed on thick card. Looks ace. But this tutorial is made to measure for something I’ve wanted to do for ages.
I told you that you were the Bob Ross of terrain. Now you're the Bob Ross of Bob Ross.
So glad you are back! Don’t ever quit! These vids make your viewers/fans lives better👍🏻
I'll keep going for as long as the community keeps me here buddy
So Nice to see u back my man...💯🔥💯💪💯❤
Blimey Mel that Burma build looks good

Thats awesome, thanks!
Immersive and superb, cracking job!
Smashing tutorial Mel!
Loving it, Mel . No apologies needed. Great work 👍
Nicely done Mel. It’s all about a slightly out of focus landscape. And you achieved that well. See ya.
Really great guide, the backdrop looks excellent 😁👍🏻
That was a cracking tutorial Mel! So good! Great idea, great work. Ha! It is so much fun getting inspired by your videos. And so good to have you back. Keep it going, keep it easy. All is fine. 😉
This is a great idea and fantastic video! So glad to have you back around, much love from San Diego California!
Fabulous work there, Mel 👍. Looks brilliant. Will definitely give this a go.
Nicely done!!
Great job. Very effective. 👍
Exquisite! Thanks for this - I had been doing some thinking along these lines the last couple weeks and this will give me the inspiration to dive into making some backdrops.
Good tutorial as allways Mel.
Cracking as always.
Great tutorial
Great...
Million thanks for sharing..
and now I want to paint a big nurgley backdrop for my death guard on my shelf. thanks Mel.
DO IT!
@@TheTerrainTutor Oh, i plan to. I may wait until i have a new bookshelf though, so i can make my backdrop fit snuggly into the shelf so they're always on display in front of a scene. But i've already downloaded inspiration pictures. LOL
Super Mel
GREAT STUFF
Perfect!
Signed prints available in Mel’s Merch soon lol
love love love!!!
Fantastic
You know, with denser foliage look, you should have added a sponged on scattered bit of the brown into the green areas, it adds to the jungle look with the bits of brown mixed in.
Maybe on the next one
I was waiting for a "happy little trees". Why wasn't there a "happy little trees"? 😀
Shame that the Premiere hiccuped and ended early. I'm not normally a fan of the format but sometimes it's a nice alternative to livestreams as a way to connect with the creator. Great to see you back enjoying making vids in the studio.
I didn't know happy little trees was a thing, I've never actually watched any of his vids
@@TheTerrainTutor Aw Mel, you really should . There's a really chill Zen vibe about them.
I came here to say happy little trees too. Goodonyer Mel!
❤❤brilliant job looks great the panting not bad as well ha ha 👍👍🤠🤠
😚
Great to see you back...
Now if you could do one about 15 ft long for train layouts..
Hahahah
Thinking out loud, you could use blank lining wallpaper for the length, and the ability to take tester pots of paint..
Fandabidosee!
Fantastic, Mel! Do you still have plans to make proper wide-canopy jungle trees for your Burma project? Thanks, and hello from Texas!
They're on the list, but I want to tackle tracks and trails next
Well done, thanks for the idea and inspiration
I think Bob Ross said that there are no mistakes just happy accidents..
fab
Ola Mel. Or is it Mel Moss now? ;) (Bob Ross, Mell Moss... you know what I mean ;))
Mel Moss lmao!
Did the Premiere stop early?
I think it did a hiccup
Ok, I wanna know where he got a hair from!8:28
Have you ever done a backdrop for a city/town?
Nice background, Please do try to make the action figures 🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🚩🚩🚩
A Mel original. You forgot to sign it. :)
I suppose it is art
Ever tried a green screen?
Am I the only person in the world who doesn’t know who Bob Ross is? Weird, but not so long ago a Stokie would have said ‘Rolf Harris’ and there would have been at least one ‘Can you tell what it is yet’
Rolfs a bit of a sensitive subject now ...
@@TheTerrainTutor oh yeah, creepy as hell but the guy turned out unbelievable paintings ‘live’ on tv in minutes while we all tried to guess what it was! Really like your backdrop btw - perfect for any wooded terrain.
Can you see what it is yet?
Bob Ross would be happy.
