The BMW Generation E38 is the third generation of the BMW 7 Series luxury cars and was produced from 1994 until 2001. The E38 replaced the E32 7 Series and was produced with petrol and turbo-diesel straight-six and V8 engines, along with a petrol V12 flagship model. Three wheelbase lengths were available - short (i), long (iL) and Limousine (L7).
The E38 was the first car available with curtain airbags. It was also the first European car to offer satellite navigation and the first BMW to offer an in-built television. The E38 was the first 7 Series to be available with a diesel engine and the last to be available with a manual transmission.
In 2001, the E38 was replaced by the E65 7 Series.

Best car i ever had. 740i M60B40, 6-speed manual gearbox. Big, comfy, beatiful (19 inch rims, shadowline, almost all in black lowered), livin legend.
Some of them are modified, removed mufflers or even straight pipe, E38s are very quiet in stock.
Would be great if this comparison included stock cars without modifications.

most elegant looking BMW is the E38
That v12 in the 750 makes a beautiful sound, I had a 740i sport with the 4.4 v8. Nearly got a 750 but fuel costs ruined it. I've had a e65 730d for the last 14 years.
I love these old 1990's BMW's - So nice to see them still going strong some 24 - 30 years after they were made - Great Stuff !

Hit 170 with my 740. I smoke e36 328s all day

For the 740d, it says 750iL on the car for the sound portion.

You forgot one! The facelift 740i
It has the M62B44 with 4.4 liters
And also the pre-facelift 750i, which has 5.0 liters.

5.0 liters was the previous generation V12.
The Alpina B12 had 5.7 liters and 6.0 liters

La 725 tds est en boite auto est la 728i en boite mécanique donc déjà il y a un gain de temps sur la 728 au 0 a 100 il faut les comparés toutes en boite auto ou toutes en boite mécanique pour avoir un avis...
Exact mais d'un autre côté le gusse est un peu paresseux et lambin sur le passage des vitesses je trouve....

Great video, yet the e38 740d is 740iL (m60b40) i indicates gasoline fuel, L is Large version of the chasis.Could be an engine swap?

In Reality, if a 728i is in good shape und properly maintenanced, it will need around 8-8.5 seconds to 100km/h, which is reasonable and fast enough for a car of this class and age. The V8's are not that much faster and even the V12 is not particulary fast when compared to all the newer upper class cars. If we take into consideration the availability of spare parts and know-how in the future aswell as the simpler and smaller design of the engine, it needs to be concluded that the M52 is in fact the best choice for the E38. I won't argue why Diesel engines should not be fitted into a upper class vehicle with a high expectation for comfort.

It pulls very well especially with manual transmission. Turbo makes this engine as flexible as 2.8i. Also tds have a very specific characteristics, he almost doesnt loses tourqe up to 4500 rpm. Its really fun to drive stock but chip makes it even better :D
@@macio21343 chip always makes turbo a bit "aggresive" i would say, so its always a good option to adjust car for your recommendations
About e38 i wanted to buy 4.4 back then

I drive the 728i with 121,000 miles and we did a 0 to 60 with specialist timing gear and it did it in 7.9 seconds which isn't that much slower than the bigger engines. Although I did have the 740 before which seemed really fast at the time.??

Mein 123d mit 2 Liter 4 Zylinder hatte nach einem Mapping 235PS und 460Nm. Die Beschleunigung lag dann bei 6,6sec. GPS!
Da bin ich theoretisch nur 0,3 seKunden vom 750i entfernt. Und ich denke in der Realität schafft der 750i die 6,3sec. auch nicht und schon garnicht mehrmals reproduzierbar. Er wird irgendwo bei über 7sec. liegen. Was meinen 123er zu einem 750er-Killer machte..

740i is the only one that makes the most sense. Reliable V8 easy to work on with more than enough power to get you where you need with ease and style.
