Hi, Jason! How credible it is to promote your YT channel by agencies or agents who offer these services through other blogs and Facebook groups? Is it good enough to run YT ads in YT only?
Very grateful for the step-by-step guidance. In your opinion, as a small channel (under 1000 subs) what should be my threshold for "this is/isn't working"? My Patreon is small so my ads budget is currently very limited, and I'm following your advice by experimenting for two weeks. What are indicators that I should be spending more money, changing my thumbnails, or trying a different campaign type?

Hey Jason - at 19:50 you say to remove/change part of the video. Why is that necessary? Why can't I just add the same video without any modifications? My videos are pretty tightly edited so it'd be tough to cut some stuff out
The main issue is not wanting to get slapped with a 'duplicate' content strike. As long as you keep the video unlisted, you should be okay... even something like adding an extra graphic or broll on top of what you have can help

yeah, support isn't going to be all the helpful and many of the reps haven't actually run a campaign for a real business before... Glad this helped clear some questions up!
were you able to do video discovery ads on google? if so, did you also have super low watch time like Jason and I both had? (if we used existing videos, which for me, was what i want, because i want to grow my views and watch time with video discovery ads of existing videos)
OMG I was dying trying to go through Google documentation to set this up, thanks for the amazing tutorial. You've earned a subscriber and like my man! ;-P
Really helpful video Jason! Thank you! 1)How you know that this placement strategy will follow the subscribers of that channel? I can’t read this nowhere… google ads only says that the ad will show there 2) I’ve never understood why you need to reupload the video and mark it as unlisted… When I upload a new video to youtube and I know I want to create an ad for that video, should I mark it as unlisted? Why not public? The video won’t show in my channel if it is unlisted…
Happy to help.... 1) When you run those placements you'll still your videos appearing on unrelated channels. They say it's just the videos, but we see our ads showing on other channels anyway. I started including that disclaimer since we kept getting questions about placements reports showing unrelated channels. 2) Since the ads can hurt organic rankings, I recommend uploading as unlisted. We are currently testing this again for 2022. If your not concerned with the organic reach of the video, then you can skip the unlisted step. Wish you the best with your ad campaigns!
@@JasonAWhaling Thank you very much for your answer! really helpful. 1) okay perfect... 2) I saw another of your videos and I got it... If the average watch time from the ad is lower than it make sense... But when the ad is over then you mark it as public again if I get it wright?
Thanks so much for this video. I'm one of those advertisers who wasted money and got very little in return (not thousands thankfully!) I plan to put these ideas into practice soon.
Very informative and easy to follow. One question. Why should we create 3 ad groups each targeting one channel as opposed to one ad group targeting all three? Thanks.
When you put all the channels in the same ad group you won't be able to see how the individual channels are performing because of the way Google reports the data
Hi Jason! This is my personal channel, not the official one, of which I should only watch and engage with music related videos. I’m subscribing now to your channel because of this video. And I have one doubt: when reposting as unlisted, how can I know how much I have to change in my song/video in order to not have any trouble? I don’t understand the reason why you have to change something and I would like to know more about it. Thank you for being so patient on this video. Best regards, Andreas
Thank you 🙏.... To answer your question; It's really, really tough to know. I've changed 10 seconds of a video and been fine. I've also just added overlays to a video, like banners every 90 seconds, and was fine. The key is to never make the video public. RUclips seems to be much more lax when the video is unlisted - I think they understand the need for running multiple ads - but they are very strict with the video is public. Hopefully that helps and wish you the best growing your channel!
BRILLIANT. You can also set a "lifetime" budget which will halt that particular campaign once your max amount has been reached. We learned A LOT from your presentation. Thank You 😀😊 Question? What to do about the fact that campaign subs and watch hours don't count towards monetization?
Thanks so much! I don't like the lifetime because you can't turn the campaign back on if it was working... Your right that these views don't count towards monetization. So just view it as promoting your channel for subs and viewers who will eventually give you the organic views needed to monetize
DO the ads have different names in different groups? At 24:15 I see all ads have the same names within a group. I am trying to come up with a good naming convention. By your cryptic ad names it looks like you have a system worked out! Thank you!
Oh good question. So every content video we publish is given a video code based upon it's content pillar and order scheduled. As an example this video is 'F4'. So the if run as an ad it would be called: F4 - H1T1 F4 = Video H1 = Headline One T1 = Thumbnail One You can't test thumbnails anymore, but we still use 'T1' internally anyway. Since we may upload the same content video twice unlisted and have them have different thumbnails to see which one does better... It's overkill but that's what we are stuck with since Google took away the Thumbnail split testing.
@@JasonAWhaling Thanks Jason, I'll stop here because I could go on & on. I found a longer naming system, but I'll file the H1T1 idea away for sure... Side note - I played years ago with a drummer named Rob Perkins who plays with jazz singer Michael Buble - you guys could be twin brothers, look him up on YT :-)

Jason I was blessed with a client with 70000 youtube subscribers. He wants to double his subscriptions. My question is should I do discovery ads or in stream ads? $1000 a month ad budget. Love your channel. Your tips have made me more money.
Is deleting 20 seconds or adding a new 45 second outro really enough to avoid being flagged as duplicate content, especially on a longer (say 20 minute) video? and THANK YOU for this and your other videos!! You are so clear, so helpful and break things down for beginners in a practical way that is easy to apply. You are head and shoulders above the other tutorials I have seen. Thank you so much. I had given up on running ads after some crappy experiences on FB, and you've inspired me to give this a go again.
Humbled by our kind words and excited your giving adverting another go! The good news is as of 2023 you no longer have to re-upload your videos to protect them. You can run traffic straight to your organic videos without hurting rankings.
@@JasonAWhalingHey! 🙋♂️ Just watched this tutorial, it was incredible! Where did you find that ads don’t hurt rankings as of 2023? I’d love to hear more, that’s great news. Thanks so much again!
Thanks, Jason! This is the most useful tutorial I've ever seen. Very clear explanation with visuals. A couple of questions: If I label a reuploaded video as "unlisted," and people click on it, how will it affect traffic and RUclips analytics? Will the clicks on the ad "count" toward anything? I have had this problem with ads before, where people click on the ads and leave after watching just a few seconds of the video, and it brings down overall watch time percentage. I don't want to hurt my video watch-time, but is this the only solution when creating ads for RUclips?
That's exactly what will happen with discovery ads - people click and bounce out quickly destory the average watch time. The unlisted recommendation, is to upload a different version of the video to run ads too
@@JasonAWhaling do they charge strait way or do you have to pay strait away as I've been told that you don't have to pay till every month is that write ?
Hi Jason, thanks for the video. Let say if I put card or end screen inside the video for Google ad, will they also show up inside the ad that people will be watching.
brilliant video. thanks Jason. i’ve just completely redone my strategy based on your method and coincidentally i started a campaign two days before i viewed yours. i could see the damage that campaign had caused when i viewed my analytics so i completely re formatted the campaign, re- edited my performing videos and uploaded them unlisted. THANKS FELLA. ill lrt you know how i get on but i have a strong feeling i’ve just dodged a bullet. 👍🙏👍
Can I combine Keywords with Affinity Audience and Topics with Placements? Or do I need to create separate campaigns for that? I do not understand that at all.
@@JasonAWhaling ok so when you are creating a campaign then they all need to be separated yes? If I want to test keywords I'll do strictly a keyword campaign. If I want to test Affinity Audience I'll do strictly affinity audience campaign If I want to test topics I'll do strictly topics campaign is thus correct ? Can I target the age and gender though? Our audience is 18-35 and majority male. It would be a waste of money to advertise to anyone above the age of 35 for us. You can combine age/gender with one of the type of audiences/topics/keywords correct ?
Hi Jason, grateful for this video! I have been told that in feed ads don't effect the organic reach of a video is that true? I know this video was over a year ago when you film it.
Thanks for sharing Jason, a lot of what you showed makes sense. Great to have this kind of video! Would you mind making second part for this video - maybe scaling tips/techniques/ideas. Thank you sir!
Thank you for the suggestion! Yes, we'll have to do a follow up with what to do with campaigns to optimize them. Thanks for watching and crush it with your camaigns!
@@JasonAWhaling By the way, I thought that there is no any kind of video to show how to determine correct sample size for statistical significance. What do you think about it?
You want 1000 impressions or 100 views before you start making changes. Ideally it would be 500 views, but sometimes given the budget that's too much to spend before making a decision
Really appreciate this detailed step-by-step. I'm trying to grow a niche channel and had someone working on GoogleAds but they approached subject very differently then you have. @@JasonAWhaling for some reason I cannot see stats in my Google ads account (but the video is getting views. Just doesn't show cost and conversions etc. Is there a recommended range of subs to expect per 1000 views?
Hi Jason, this is super helpful. I've watched almost all that I can watch to really find answers to my questions with Google ads, this is far the best. Please let me ask you a question, what happens if I just copy the URL of the old videos I want to include in the campaign? And what happens if I reupload the same content but modified them, after the campaign, so I have 2 videos the same title/content (except that they have slight difference) from unlisted video, do I specify it public later on after the campaign?
Humbled thank you! The good news is you don't have to do the reupload strategy anymore (as of 11/2022).... So you can just use the url of the older videos
Thank you so much for this great video! First time I hear that I should upload again my videos - with some alterations. Two questions: 1. Isn't it unattractive to viewers to click on a video that has zweo or 10 views only? (since it's freshly re-uploaded) 2. Since it's an unlisted video, this is just to find people to grow the channel, right? Since the actual original video won't get those more viewers... Would be really good to hear your opinion or advice on that! You're great!
1) Yes it is and it can be hard to get those views up when it's all zeros. The ads still work though! 2) Yes, this is just about growing a channel; not helping a video rank long term
@@JasonAWhaling Thank you very much for your reply - that's really amazing! Well, the original videos I'd like to promote my channel with have been 1000 and 6000 views - then zero in the re-edited form... That's why I was really wondering if anybody will click a video add with 0 views... I guess I'll only find out when I try (just felt a bit embarrassing)
This was such helpful video. The step by step was easy to follow and I really appreciate you! My ads say they are not eligible though so I need tofigure out where the issue is. But thank you so much. !
You are an awesome instructor. This video is pure knowledge that many of us did not know about. My three campaign ads are up and running. I don't have a large library of content as a gaming channel, but I hope the ads help drive views and subs to the channel to at least build momentum. Thank you for your help!
Tremendous content! Thank you for this high-level and yet, so easy to follow, step-by-step walk-through. I have just set up accordingly. I will update my results in a couple weeks:)! Thank you again!
@@houseofgraceworship Hello:) It went very well in terms of getting views and driving traffic! As for those views generating likes and/or subscribers I don't belive it made much impact. However I am happy to drive traffic to my site in any way. It was a sucessful ad campaign in many ways, and I do belive there is a benefit in a small budget dedicated to ads on youtube. Thank you for your inquiry.
Thank you Jason! Great tips on how to lower the costs! One of your older videos suggested using red arrows "mobile click" top right hand corner and "Desktop click" bottom left hand corner as the calls to action. Do you still suggest that or has the format changed?
I stopped recommending that because RUclips changed where the calls to action where on the videos. For in-stream ads there is now a banner at the bottom of the video, so you can have the arrows point to the bottom left for Desktop, and bottom right for Mobile. We are still working on an updated video for the exact placements. For discovery ads (like this video) Cards and top of the description are still the place to tell people to click
@@JasonAWhaling Thanks I had been wondering about this too. So this is only for the "in stream skippable" ? Also, does this mean that you should have two ads, one for desktop, one for mobile? That way the arrows point the right way?
Okay, Jason. You convinced me. I'm going to give it a shot and see what happens. Thanks for such an easy-to-follow step-by-step with insightful tips. I have 319 subs right now so I could really use a boost. Let's do it!
@@mohamedbendebiza6340 not really. That was almost a year ago. I had 319 and now I have 436 and I spent a couple hundred bucks, but my view hours have decreased. But the video instructions were easy to follow and I did get some traction, butnot enough. I do have a very niche channel that is not for everyone though.

Hi Jason, I came across this video - very clear, though a bit fast - I had to go over a few times but that is ok. I have two questions: in two separate messages. (1 ) I understand why you have to create multiple ad groups so you can associate them with different placements. However, if I have the same set of placements for multiple videos that I want to promote, I have to create the same ad groups again and again for different videos that I want to promote. Is there a quicker way around this problem? Just like you have a copy and paste for the same ad being pasted in different ad groups?
1) Sadly there is not a quicker way around this. It's very time consuming to set up. I would suggest looking up 'Google Ads Editor' a desktop application for building ad campaigns. The copy-paste goes a lot faster with a tool like that but it takes a while to get the hang of.
Hey Jason! Great tutorial and thanks for the help. QUICK QUESTION: At timestamp 14:15, you told us to choose a Video Discovery Ad but when I click on "Save Ad Group" the only two options it gives me is 1) skippable in-stream ad 2) in-feed video ad. Should I click on one of those or did I mess something up previously and that's what's why the Video Discovery As isn't showing up? Thanks in advance for your help

YELLING all the stuffs ,,BEST FOR YOU'' , ,,BEST EFFECT'' and kind of .... blah-blah things my head just blow... But this video... this video just explain everything perfect... Thank you very much for your support and very good explanation! All good to you ! :)
Hi Jason, I'm wondering if you know if I make my call to action on an in stream ad to be a Subscribe button. And I use the link that will auto pop up my youtube page with a confirm subscription. Does this work on Mobile? Lets say the add gets 700 clicks but only 150 subscribers. Wanting to make sure I get the most out of it. Thanks in advance. I'll be continuing to google to see if I can find the answer.
Jason, great video and as a fellow Marketer, I totally agree, you really nail the thoughts behind the ads. Because I do not have the experience with running ads on RUclips, I do have 1 question. So in your video you talk about the importance of not using an existing listed video to run the ad, but to upload that video again "unlisted". How about making an ad on a completely new upload of which I know would work content wise, would that do the job and why (not)? Or do you really need to get your highlighted video to be uploaded twice?
If you want to go through the work of creating a video just to be run as an ad by all means go for it. I include that warning because many creators still want to be able to rank organically and ads will kill that option... So as long as your aware; go for it!
Love the video and learnt so much. Can you please advise how long is advisable to keep the advert running for until you swap it for a different video on your channel? Or is it ok to keep the same video running?
Hi Jason, love your work. Amazing vids! 3 questions: 1. When selecting channels as a placement, where will my ad be displayed? On all video's on that channel? Because I can pick both the channel and video's seperately so quite confusing. 2. When doing Discovery ads, why select CPV and not CPM? Because the ad is shown in results and side columns of other vids? So ppc would be better right because you want as much people clicking on your ad to see the video or go to your channel to subscribe. 3. Do you have a tutorial where you discuss best practices per video type? Like a hook before the skip button appears, total length per video etc.? Thanks!
Thank you! 1) When you select a channel placement the ad will follow the channels viewers, not the channels videos. So if a subscriber of that channel is browsing another channels video; your ad can pop up as suggested or when they are doing a search. Don't do specific videos, the impressions are low, costs are high. 2) Harder to optimize for CPM. You need CPV to clearly compare audience costs and calculate your cost per subscriber or CPA. The only time to use CPM is if you just want to blast the video and don't care about anything other than impressions. 3) Sorry I don't have a free video about how to do that and don't plan to as it's part of a future paid course.
Hi Jason, My second question is this. (2) About the different videos that you want the advertiser to create, is there a way on to make a clickable icon on the video so for the the person watching the video so (s)he could jump over to the full video? Or the clickable link has to be part of the text below, i.e. the video description? That is it ..thank you
2) There isn't a way to do this. You'll have to link the full video in the cards, description, pin as first comment. Thanks for watching and good luck with your campaigns!
@@JasonAWhaling thank you Jason... I figured out that cards were a decent option and used it. And using ms photos i created an arrow on the video with a message "click here" ... For those who may not know how to go to the main video... It works 👌 and the one of the most valueable message from the video was that one should not use the target video itself as an ad... I was doing that only and my average time per view suffered a lot due to this... Thanks a lot for this

🙌 Happy to help! That documentation is so confusing
Really helpful video Jason! Thank you!
1)How you know that this placement strategy will follow the subscribers of that channel? I can’t read this nowhere… google ads only says that the ad will show there
2) I’ve never understood why you need to reupload the video and mark it as unlisted…
When I upload a new video to youtube and I know I want to create an ad for that video, should I mark it as unlisted?
It took me five hours to work through and do this tutorial....I hope it's worth it.
Hope so too! It's much easier after your firs few campaigns!
Thanks so much for this video. I'm one of those advertisers who wasted money and got very little in return (not thousands thankfully!) I plan to put these ideas into practice soon.
Oh no 😦 - I'm glad it wasn't thousands and hope that this way of building campaigns winds up being more successful
thank you for the tip of re-uploading the video used in the ad, that is a huge tip and I had not seen it before.
Yeah, I've killed so many of my videos, hoping to save other creators from the headache
Wow, what a brilliant video! You are an brilliant teacher and I am definitely going to try out this strategy. Thank you so much.
Humbled by your kind words and wish you the best with your RUclips ads!
New to youtube and new to google ads! But thank you, you make it easy to understand! , wish me luck!!
Awesome to hear the video was helpful! Wish you the best with getting your new campaigns all setup!
Wow. The best video on how to create ads ,for a new channel this is all so confusing but thanks to you not anymore. Thank you!!!
Happy to help with taking away some of the confusion of running ads. Thanks so much for watching!
Very informative and easy to follow. One question. Why should we create 3 ad groups each targeting one channel as opposed to one ad group targeting all three? Thanks.
When you put all the channels in the same ad group you won't be able to see how the individual channels are performing because of the way Google reports the data
@@JasonAWhaling Thanks.
Best regards,
Andreas
Thank you 🙏.... To answer your question; It's really, really tough to know. I've changed 10 seconds of a video and been fine. I've also just added overlays to a video, like banners every 90 seconds, and was fine. The key is to never make the video public. RUclips seems to be much more lax when the video is unlisted - I think they understand the need for running multiple ads - but they are very strict with the video is public. Hopefully that helps and wish you the best growing your channel!
@Jason Whaling thank you so much for replying to this Jason! I feel more confident to try it out now.
Perfect best introduction about google ads I ever found. I'll try this and tell you my progress
thank you
but one question. Should we keep our videos unlisted even when ads are running.
Happy to help! And if you are using the re-upload method, then defiantly keep those videos unlisted
Finally an easy to follow step by step guide. Just what I was searching for. Thanks - so valuable. Cant wait to see the results on my channel!
Good luck with your RUclips ads!
thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks for watching! Appreciate it!
So the if run as an ad it would be called:
F4 - H1T1
F4 = Video
H1 = Headline One
T1 = Thumbnail One
You can't test thumbnails anymore, but we still use 'T1' internally anyway.
Hey Jason. Thank you for the simple and informative video. Would this strategy still work today? I noticed this was posed 2 years ago

Jason I was blessed with a client with 70000 youtube subscribers. He wants to double his subscriptions. My question is should I do discovery ads or in stream ads? $1000 a month ad budget. Love your channel. Your tips have made me more money.
I would go discovery ads all the way for that kind of work. In-stream are great for driving traffic off of RUclips. Good luck!
What an amazing content!! Thank you so much for this. Trying this strategy now
Happy to help! Good luck with your RUclips ads
@@JasonAWhaling That's amazing! Thank you.
Very interesting! RUclips ads is tough going but this video really helped. Many thanks!

Hi Jason, thanks for the video. Let say if I put card or end screen inside the video for Google ad, will they also show up inside the ad that people will be watching.
When you run the video as an in-feed ad yes
brilliant video. thanks Jason. i’ve just completely redone my strategy based on your method and coincidentally i started a campaign two days before i viewed yours. i could see the damage that campaign had caused when i viewed my analytics so i completely re formatted the campaign, re- edited my performing videos and uploaded them unlisted.

NO, please don't put all of those into the same campaign. You can test all of those - just create a campaign for each type.
@@JasonAWhaling ok so when you are creating a campaign then they all need to be separated yes?
If I want to test keywords I'll do strictly a keyword campaign.
If I want to test Affinity Audience I'll do strictly affinity audience campaign
If I want to test topics I'll do strictly topics campaign is thus correct ?
Can I target the age and gender though? Our audience is 18-35 and majority male. It would be a waste of money to advertise to anyone above the age of 35 for us. You can combine age/gender with one of the type of audiences/topics/keywords correct ?

Hi Jason, grateful for this video! I have been told that in feed ads don't effect the organic reach of a video is that true? I know this video was over a year ago when you film it.
According to YT they don't, however that's not what we have experienced which is why I continue to suggest a second unlisted upload for ad testing
@@JasonAWhaling I am looking forward to see the follow up video. THANK YOU!!!
Finally a hands on video which explain HOW TO do it, thank you for the great work!

@@JasonAWhaling I was scrolling through and came upon this... what does that mean? The watch time won't be impacted any longer if it comes from ads?
Thank you so much for this great video! First time I hear that I should upload again my videos - with some alterations. Two questions:
1. Isn't it unattractive to viewers to click on a video that has zweo or 10 views only? (since it's freshly re-uploaded)
Thanks for watching, super glad it helped! I hope you can figure out the issue and good luck with your ads! 🔥
You are an awesome instructor. This video is pure knowledge that many of us did not know about. My three campaign ads are up and running. Hope this helps you with finding new subscribers for your gaming channel! Happy to hear it's been so helpful - get the word out!
great video and information. If you are repurposing some of your videos, should we use the same thumbnail or switch up as well? Thanks
For the thumbnail you can use the same one. It's pretty hard to split test thumbnails, so I recommend going with the same one

How did it go?
@@houseofgraceworship Hello:) It went very well in terms of getting views and driving traffic! As for those views generating likes and/or subscribers I don't belive it made much impact. However I am happy to drive traffic to my site in any way. It was a sucessful ad campaign in many ways, and I do belive there is a benefit in a small budget dedicated to ads on youtube. Thank you for your inquiry.

didi it work?
Let's do it!

hey , did it work for you? how much you sub you got ?
@@mohamedbendebiza6340 not really. That was almost a year ago. I had 319 and now I have 436 and I spent a couple hundred bucks, but my view hours have decreased. But the video instructions were easy to follow and I did get some traction, butnot enough. I do have a very niche channel that is not for everyone though.
@@HighLifeMeditations i think the niche isn't for everyone
Hello, Jason. A great video series...I watched without batting my eyelids. So engrossing these videos are. I have learnt something from this. Moving away from Organic to PPC. I will try on the first channel to see how it goes. Thank you. Are you planning to do free Bootcamp soon, so we all do some practicals?
Thank you for your kind words and I'm happy to hear its helpful. We have some new videos on running ads but I don't have the time to do a free bootcamp :(
Hi Jason, I came across this video - very clear, though a bit fast - I had to go over a few times but that is ok.
@@JasonAWhaling thank you Jason ... ❤️🙏

Should I click on one of those or did I mess something up previously and that's what's why the Video Discovery As isn't showing up? Thanks in advance for your help

You can have the link go to your channel but it's not going to automatically pull up that sub-button on mobile :(
Jason, great video and as a fellow Marketer, I totally agree, you really nail the thoughts behind the ads.
@@JasonAWhaling I get it , makes sense , thanks!
Love the video and learnt so much. Can you please advise how long is advisable to keep the advert running for until you swap it for a different video on your channel? Or is it ok to keep the same video running?
It's okay to keep the same video running as long as your numbers look good. I've had some run for years before switching
Hi Jason, love your work. Amazing vids!
3 questions:
This is awesome thanks so much for this it’s gonna help my channel out a lot I really appreciate it
Wish you the best in growing your channel! You've got this!
@@JasonAWhaling hey thanks a lot your awesome!
