@user-gu4tv4hp6s I was (almost) 8 myself (Turing 8 that November 1973) I vividly remember this play. (& it being replayed many times live, & it being the wrong call!) - Now that I’m in my 50s, I’m impressed how fast Yogi Berra could run to the plate. - & Bud Harrelson’s hilarious comment to the umpire. (I I never knew he said that until this RUclips video) - BTW: I wonder what prompted you, to talking about soccer? & there’s not 240 countries in the world. - Edited: it appears that “UCgUjfaISuYWhOjM40GRt8SA” has remove his comment, about how great soccer is soccer and claimed it is played by 240 countries.
I was 7 when this happed (Turing 8 that November 1973) I vividly remember this play. (I didn’t know that til the RUclips era)
Yogi gets knocked a lot as a manager, but what did he manage, five years in the major leagues and he won two pennants, each time with an inferior team that had no business being in the world series. And both times his teams took far superior opponents to the seventh game. Met fans still whine about his going with Seaver in game 6, but I'd be pretty sure he did it because Seaver insisted that he was in shape & would win and Berra was trusting him to do it. You go with your star guys.
Bud was my favorite MLB player. Great glove. Better mouth. Supposedly, when he bounced off mammoth Boog Powell in a play at first in the '69 Series, he told someone they better check on Powell to make sure he was OK.
Did anyone else happen to catch the umpire's comments to Yogi? It went along these lines: "Give up with this team!" Inappropriate and should have resulted in a fine and that umpire being suspended.
I remember seeing this live. It was a terrible call. At least it didn't effect the overall outcome. The Mets went on to win this game but choked the Series in the end. Yogi should have saved Seaver for Game 7!
I can remember this like it was yesterday Rudi made a great throw 1 bounce to Ray Fosse. ...Harrelson tagged. up.....clear as day fosse never even tagged him the great Willie Mays was on his knees. .....bad call cant ever forget this one. ...
If the designated hitter was used as it is today for the National League team in an American League park, the Mets might have pulled this off because Staub had a bad shoulder and couldn't throw. Or they could have put Milner in the outfield and moved Staub to first.
I think the next batter was Willie Mays' and it was his last at bat in the major league. If I remember correctly, he flied out to 2nd. I was in 3rd grade at the time so my memory could be off.
MrAitraining They eventually went on to win game 2. I went to game 3 @ Shea with my older brother. WS tickets for the upper deck in right field went for $8.00 a ticket. Today, that would be the price of a hot dog-maybe. Tom Seaver was pitching a gem, but the Mets couldn't give him run support and they eventually lost that game in extra innings, 3-2.
scottty500 Cool. Well objectively, as u know the Mets should not have even gotten to the playoffs with the record they finished with. Was a fluke. and the A's were in the prime of their dynasty....but the Mets still fought em' hard to the end. The "you gotta believe" team
The ump was getting into position for what he expected was going to a slide. So he literally didn't even see the fucking play. His eyes were no where near where the tag went. He was locked in on the ground. He was just guessing. He guessed wrong. Mets still win the game though, so no harm, no foul 🤷♂️
Where did that ump go to umpire school? at the Saint Augustine school for the deaf and blind. 😎 (Ray Charles was a famous alumni, that’s the movie with Jamie Foxx won the academy award for)
It didn't cost the Mets the Series. The Mets went on to win this game. The Series was lost when Yogi went with Seaver on short rest in Game 6. He should have saved him for Game 7.
Mets won that game anyway. Mays got game winning hit for his last at bat for his career. Was longest world series game at the time. Wackiest world series game ever.
It was a pop fly so Millan was out. Yeah, I don't know why C. Jones ran all the way onto the field?? That looks crazy, what business is it of him to argue with the ump. He'd get run out of the game now.
JohnQ1127 There was a fire in the belly that is not present today. Keep in mind that back then the average player salary was approximately $32,000 (not a misprint) a year. The WS winners' take was about that same figure. In essence, winning the WS would double a player's salary. Thus, that played a HUGE part in what appeared to be half the team running onto the field after the umpire got the call wrong.
Baseball Digest carried photos of this play many years ago from a different angle. The pictures clearly show Fosse tagging the runner on the right arm., You can't really see that from this video.
Richard Martucci Yep, he was safe! Augie Donatelli tells Yogi the tag was "right here on the ass," but it wasn't even close! And I don't know how any angle could show the tag being on the right arm!
Replay has ruined these moments? Why, you'd just prefer shit calls to forever go unchallenged? Replay allows us to see that, yes, Yogi's meltdown in the 1973 World Series was indeed justified and that Donatello indeed had his head up his ass in that moment and missed the call. Sorry, the idea that that constitutes some kind of tragedy is just stupid.
That fire in the belly is missing in in a lot of today's ballplayers. Keep in mind back then salaries weren't ridiculous so winning a WS would double one's salary.
A runner can advance after a catch is made. There was one out at the time. The catch was out two and the so-called tag at home plate was out # three and thus the inning was over. The Mets eventually won this game.
how do you call the 64 Yanks an inferior team? certainly not as good as the other yankee pennant winners, but still pretty good with mantle hitting .300, along with the other cast. Yogi was a good manager though.
Where did that ump go to umpire school? at the Saint Augustine school for the deaf and blind. 😎 (Ray Charles was a famous alumni, that’s the movie with Jamie Foxx won the academy award for)

I watch this for millions of time. I love the way Yogi Berra ran from dugout and argued the home umpire. C. Jones ran along with him. I lol'ed
Never argue with a guy who play as a catcher. They have eyes like a hawk, RIP Yogi...
residentflea never touched him

"You can't kick me out for your inadequacy!" - Bud Harrelson
bokrusher he was a trooper. Great guy to have on your team
Bud was my favorite MLB player. Great glove. Better mouth. Supposedly, when he bounced off mammoth Boog Powell in a play at first in the '69 Series, he told someone they better check on Powell to make sure he was OK.
1tishhead his mouth got him in trouble that's why Pete Rose kicked his ass in the '73 NLCS
@@roybuford7538 But the Mets had the last laugh
Dallas Brubaker who won the series though?
Yogi should have told Donatelli, "You can observe a lot just by watching."
And if Donatelli said the shadows were affecting his sight line, he could have said "it gets late early out there."
remember this like it was yesterday
How about when Milner tried to tag campaneris and they called him safe and he was out of the base path.
Safe all the way !!!
What a great seven games series!
They need to "hot mic" baseball like this much more often... It did wonders for the NFL's popularity in the early days...
0:10 lol ! Watch # 3’s reaction!!!!! Hahahahaha
I am a Mets fan. Remember watching this at age 10. It was game 2. Fortunately the Mets still won.
I am not even a Mets fan but it is clear to me that he blew the call. He was safe.
I’d give it all for my grandpa to have another Mets World Series victory under his belt.
RIP Yogi
Did anyone else happen to catch the umpire's comments to Yogi? It went along these lines: "Give up with this team!" Inappropriate and should have resulted in a fine and that umpire being suspended.
Cool story bro
I thought ump said shut up im fed up with this team
Augie Donatelli retired after the 1973 World Series so he probably didn't care what he said then.
I remember seeing this live. It was a terrible call. At least it didn't effect the overall outcome. The Mets went on to win this game but choked the Series in the end. Yogi should have saved Seaver for Game 7!
JENDALL714, it was indeed Tommy Lasorda narrating the video. The clip was from the video "Now It Can Be Heard", which he hosted.
Curt Gowdy from NBC.
Yogi sure knew how to sprint out of that dugout on a bad call!!! Check out Bud Harrleson throwing a temper tantrum after the umpire's call!!!😂
What the heck WAS Donatelli doing sprawled out on the ground...never seen an umpire make a call from that position...
I can remember this like it was yesterday Rudi made a great throw 1 bounce to Ray Fosse. ...Harrelson tagged. up.....clear as day fosse never even tagged him the great Willie Mays was on his knees. .....bad call cant ever forget this one. ...
Did you see Harrelson's contortions after he passed the plate. He was lucky he didn't hurt himself.
Yeah, if Cespedes did that it would be 60 days on the DL.
Yogi looks like Drooper from The Banana Splits!
LOVE Bud’s reaction!
You can’t kick me out for your inadequacy! Rip bud!

Ed Punt
Mays last at bat was game winning single in top of the 12th inning which is pretty cool.
& remember, Mays was also on deck in 1951, when Bobby Thompson, hit the “Shot Heard Around the World”
Mays last at bat was in Game 3 back in New York. Grounder to short stop.
I wish Walter Matthau would've played Yogi back in the day.
Definitely, for crying out loud!
Matthau was 6'2.
Uggh. I hated this whole play. Met fan who still gets pissed watching this......
I was 12 years old when that play happened. Today, I'm 55. He was safe back then and I have no reason to change my mind in 2016 (soon to be 2017).
scottty500 Hell yeah he was safe. And I was 8 yrs old:)
MrAitraining They eventually went on to win game 2. I went to game 3 @ Shea with my older brother. WS tickets for the upper deck in right field went for $8.00 a ticket. Cub fan here and it ticks me off too. :-). They won the game at least.
Buddy could never stay away from controversy that fall......don't forget the brawl with
Pete Rose during the NLCS,BTW!!!
Also, Pedro Borbon taking a bite out of Buzz Capra's cap in that scuffle.
The ump was getting into position for what he expected was going to a slide. So he literally didn't even see the fucking play. His eyes were no where near where the tag went. Sounds like Tommy Lasorda doing the narration.
Where did that ump go to umpire school? at the Saint Augustine school for the deaf and blind. 😎 (Ray Charles was a famous alumni, that’s the movie with Jamie Foxx won the academy award for)
Who was the player with # 3?
Augie must have changed his mind. There is no record of an ejection in this game at all.
I want Yogi's glasses!
It didn't cost the Mets the Series. The Mets went on to win this game. The Series was lost when Yogi went with Seaver on short rest in Game 6. He should have saved him for Game 7.
George Stone that year was the Mets 4th starter. He had a career year with a 12-3 record and an ERA of 2.80. He could have been the game 6 starter.
man Harrelson jumped up about nine feet
The catcher's mitt never even came within a foot of the runner. Safe
Imagine having replay back then, would've changed the whole series.
Mets won that game anyway. Mays got game winning hit for his last at bat for his career. Was longest world series game at the time. Wackiest world series game ever.
Never see Yogi that mad
What the heck is Tommy narrating this piece?
Ump was on the ground likely expecting a slide. This contributed to the missed call. Awful! A rough post-season for Bud!
What the heck was Cleon Jones doing running out of the dugout to argue? And what was Felix Millan, the batter, doing there? Didn't he run it out?
It was a pop fly so Millan was out. Yeah, I don't know why C. Jones ran all the way onto the field?? That looks crazy, what business is it of him to argue with the ump. He'd get run out of the game now.

BINGO !!! ;D Many players actually 'LOSE' game-played money in today's playoffs !!
scottty500 that is crap
Taxi Talk NYC BULLSHIT!
Men seemed more raw and real back then...
He put on a credible acting job.
I love it when New York gets screwed, though it would have been better if it was the Yankees 😂😂😂
yeah, Mets got the benefit of some really bad calls in 69 WS against Orioles and won, so the breaks even out over time
Big A's fan..but Fosse (Or was it Tenace the Menace?) missed!
Baseball Digest carried photos of this play many years ago from a different angle. The pictures clearly show Fosse tagging the runner on the right arm., You can't really see that from this video.
Safe
Richard Martucci Yep, he was safe! Augie Donatelli tells Yogi the tag was "right here on the ass," but it wasn't even close! And I don't know how any angle could show the tag being on the right arm!
In the end, none of this maters, because the Mets won the game, but lost the series, thus the play, right or wrong had no bearing on anything.
Baji Kimran Very true!
Baji Kimran You must be an Oakland fan!
YOGI NEVER GOT ENOUGH CREDIT FOR MANAGING THE METS BECAUSE HE WAS SAID TO HAVE INHERITED HODGES TEAM BUT HE WAS GREAT TOO
that run scores...
After instant replay.
Narrated by Tommy Lasorda.
Curt Gowdy as the narrator makes more sense, but it does sound like Tommy Lasorda.
Bto13e it's Lasorda for sure
Its Tommy Lasorda. I had this on VHS
Replay has ruined these moments. RIP Yogi Berra. Great player, manager, but most importantly, a great Human Being.

+Don Murphy lol terrible argument. It has ruined these moments. Anyone who disagrees is a dope
Dallas Branden could have used replay, when the umpire blew his PERFECT GAME !!!
That fire in the belly is missing in in a lot of today's ballplayers. Keep in mind back then salaries weren't ridiculous so winning a WS would double one's salary.
scottty500 that is crap
Yogi baby was the man!!
This is why instant replay is needed to reverse calls. Mets got screwed on this call.⚾👎⚾👎 ⚾👎
He was safe...
#3 Ken Boswell unsung hero second baseman
save by a mile umpire assumed, wasn't in right position.
What happens here ? I do not understand this sport
A runner can advance after a catch is made. There was one out at the time. The catch was out two and the so-called tag at home plate was out # three and thus the inning was over. The Mets eventually won this game.
Dey wuz robbed.
Yogi was robbed of a 12th ring.
+Spinosaurus1231 Yogi never won one as a manager---64 Yanks and 73 Mets both lost WS in 7 games
loyaldude10 He won one with the 1969 world series Mets. First base coach
Fosse.....remember it was he for whom Pete Rose rolled him over to end the
All Star game just 3 years before,BTW!!!
Safe
how do you call the 64 Yanks an inferior team? certainly not as good as the other yankee pennant winners, but still pretty good with mantle hitting .300, along with the other cast. Yogi was a good manager though.
SCREW THE DH. Corrupted the game.
he was safe but sadly the idiot umpire didnt see it that way.i remember that game oh so well. very possible he cost the mets a world series win.
Not possible at all. The Mets won this game.
Worst call ever!! The Mets should of won, this World Series.
TheDOLMET The mets won that game
Looked out to me.
