- Today I’m going to talk about the iPod Touch, the only iPod model you can buy today. We’ll explore why it was developed and why it’s still being sold, when all the other iPod models have been discontinued.
The story of the iPod Touch begins in 2007. By that time, iPods had been around for quite a while, with the first version released in 2001. And by 2007, Apple had already released a number of different models, some discontinued, and some still being sold. There was the iPod Classic, iPod Mini, iPod Nano, iPod shuffle, and iPod Photo. While Apple definitely had a secure footing in the market, competitors were starting to pop up - Zune had just released its first model of MP3 player and was about to release the Zune 80, Zune 4, and Zune 8 - competition for the iPod Classic and Nano lines. Luckily, Apple had something up their sleeve.
Now, the iPhone had already been on the market for about eighteen months in September of 2007. It was wildly popular, with lines hundreds of people long outside Apple stores on the day of its release. Part of its success was the touchscreen interface which, up until that point, really hadn’t been utilized by mobile phone manufacturers. Users were excited about a new, sleek, and attractive design that really seemed to be the future of technology - but there were some problems with the iPhone. For example, many of the people who bought them in the first few days of release were disappointed to find out that they couldn’t actually activate them - AT&T’s servers were just too overwhelmed to handle the number of new iPhone. Others were frustrated that the only way to actually use an iPhone was to purchase a bundled plan with AT&T - which meant leaving their own service provider and paying high costs to a new company that often didn’t have as reliable coverage.

I miss the iPod Touch. It was a way to get all the features of the iPhone without buying an overpriced iPhone and since Wifi is practically everywhere these days, iPod Touch would even be more relevant. But sadly, Apple has lost its way after Jobs died and is not interested in selling overpriced luxury phones and watches than actually providing value to their customers.

I remember when the iPod was the king at school! It was cheap enough to get as a birthday or Christmas present and fast enough to be fun during recess. The reason it is dying in sales in my mind is new generations don't mind giving their kid a phone when they are young when older generations didn't ever do this. Also, most parents nowadays own a few older touchscreen devices where when I was young they were brand new so there where no devices similar to an iPod to pass down. I think the iPod touch was an item that was popular not because of how good it was (Don't get me wrong it was good) but because it filled in a nesh in the market at the time that has since been replaced with new devices.

Me too. It was the first iPod with cameras, which practically made it an iPhone without the calling feature. At that point I was still using an old Nokia symbian phone and did not have the money to buy an iPhone. So I got an iPod, jailbroke it, installed whatsapp/skype/viber and was practically using it as a phone. There was a jailbreak feature that allowed you to tether your iPod to a regular phone through Bluetooth. Since my phone did not have Wifi at that time, I used Bluetooth to tether my iPod to my phone and use my phone internet on my iPod for messaging when I did not have access to wifi. Good times!

With Face ID, Apple Pay, and all screen display. Only no cellular call service that's wifi only or with LTE. Granted, an unlocked iPhone could do all that but it could also be much cheaper

My first iPod touch was the first one. I often joked it had all the features of an iPhone, minus the phone capability. So, an iPhone. 😅 (The original iPhone had a lot of issues with calls and connectivity.)
Thank you for making these vids. Most of the info is known, but the nostalgia and reminiscence of watching these vids keep me wanting more. I appreciate your time in making these. Chris Came here to say this! I enjoy his content, but the amount of inaccuracies take away from the experience. The biggest one was that the original iPod touch launch in Sept 2007, just 3 months after the iPhone. He said it launched after the iPhone 3G. What? The 3G launched in 2008.

Sorry to be the guy to say it, but the iPhone came out June of 2007, not 18 months before the iPod Touch which came out September of 2007. If I misheard what you said, Apple Explained, ignore this comment.

Apple Explained also, second gen introduced microphone and speaker. 3rd gen was just a processor upgrade. I had the 2nd gen and skipped the 3rd and had the 4th.

My wife and I love the iPod touch! We have been avid users since their first release, updating regularly. We currently use 32 and 128GB 6th gen. and love the fact we have an iPhone 6 in small form factor. However it would be nice if the next update simply used the 4.7" screen and iPhone form factor, just take out the cellular tech.. It would cut costs for Apple while giving us iPod touch loyalists a nice upgrade in screen and battery (not to mention give a certain hand-held king a run for it's money).

4:11 actually the speaker was introduced on the second generation iPod Touch and the third gen did not have a microphone. The iPod Touch did not receive a microphone until the fourth generation that came with a camera.

TehFalcon101 the 6th gen iPod touch has an Apple A8 chip with an 8mp camera... the 6S has the newer faster a9 chip with a better 12mp camera.. and other better hardware. The 6th gen is actually comparable to the iPhone 6.. they share the same hardware.

I still use my iPods. They're great for putting in your pocket and just listening to music on.
I had an iPod for many years before getting my 6s. The iPod worked fine since I didn’t need to call and found other ways to text people who didn’t have iPhones. I finally got an iPhone this year because it finally became obvious that I would need to have cell service, especially because of my age.
So although I see your point, iPods have their place. My parents didn’t want to get me a phone just yet (a fifth grader doesn’t need a phone, an iPod works just as well) however an iPod has a lot of the same functionalities.

I still use my iPod Touch 5th Gen everyday just to listen to my music. I love it! It's nice to have a device dedicated specifically to playing music so I don't eat up my phone's battery playing it. I think having an iPod Touch and a phone is the way to go!
Since before, the newer version called the Zune 120 had improvements compared to the iPod classic and it had WiFi and better navigation meaning it was getting ahead of the classic. But apple decided to introduce the first iPhone and that completely changed the way phones are today.
I remember back in middle school (which was only like 5 years ago) when every kid had an iPod 5. Nowadays, parents just give their kids real phones. I guess that's why it's dying.

6:06 I remember that iPod!!! That was such a neat design! I resent picking it up and feeling like I almost threw it because it was SO light! And the little button on the bottom back was so cool because you could click it and attach the included wristband! Such a cool design and reminds me of the later, colorful generations iPod of the iPod Nano.

I’m still waiting for iPod touch 7th to be released. I almost gave up on iPod touch 7, but last week I got e-mails from Apple which mentioned about iPod touch 7th generation. Maybe just a mistake, but it gave me hope so I decided to keep waiting for iPod touch 7.

There’s really no need for the iPod touch anymore. You can just buy an iPhone SE for the same price and get much more feature and better performance, and you don’t need to use the cellular features of an iPhone if you don’t want to.

Wish you would have mentioned that the iPod Touch 5th Generation had a 16gb version released in 2013 that came in one color and had no rear iSight Camera. It was then updated in 2014 to ship with the same colors as the 32gb and 64gb models.
Oh boy how I miss my iPod Touch 3rd Gen. I would literally spend hours just finding and downloading apps and not even using them. The concept of apps to me at the time was just incredible!

He failed to mention that it can be used as a phone for free calls when connected to Wi-Fi using FaceTime Audio and the free VOIP apps like Google Hangouts but I think the included AirPods do not have a cord microphone so you’d need to use ones that come with iPhones.
I wish Apple revisited the iPod classic for its 20th anniversary, it would have been a really cool looking device it would be nice to have a iPod classic that didn't have a bad battery or a dead drive

I swear, if Apple ever discontinues the iPod touch, I will go ahead and not do anything. I would still be sad though because it's an amazing device. I certainly need one of them, but most people say it should've never existed for some stupid reason. Those dudes are bags of crap. Apple should continue selling products to people who still need them, and since iPods (Classic, Nano and Shuffle) are vintage they become expensive I think Apple should start selling refurbished models of iPod so they can get some money because those items are collectables.

The iPod touch is by far one of the best birthday presents I ever gotten or bought for myself. It's a shame I couldn't get another one, because the Apple store only allowed people who made appointments in and all the other stores just plain didn't have any in stock.

I would like to see a 7th generation iPod Touch. Apple should make it faster with the A11 or even A12 chip to make it more viable for iOS 12. They should make the screen size bigger and add Touch ID.

I had a second and forth generation and absolutely loved them. They were the biggest thing at the time because nobody wanted to pay the high prices of the iPhone. Now as an iPhone 7 user I don’t even consider an iPod to be an option anymore as the iPhone does everything I need in one device and it’s more updated than the iPod Touch.
