  • We asked filmmaker, teacher and Sony ambassador ‪@jacques_crafford‬ to explain the importance of using a variable neutral density filter to make footage more cinematic. In this video, Jacques explains the relationship between shutterspeed and frame rates (the 180 degree rule) and how to control shutterspeed without compromising on aperture or ISO.
He explains why its so important to use a premium filter in order to avoid colour casts and X-effect and why the NiSi True Colour Variable ND is his ND of choice.
This is not a sponsored video and Jacques is not a NiSi ambassador- he has been using NiSi VNDs for years and his opinion of the product is his own.

Wonder why this video doesn't have viwers , beautifully done , can we use IR cut filter in front of this filter ? because it's rotational which means IR filter also will be rotate and does that effect the image quality have you tested ?

We're not 100% sure Arun. We have asked NiSi and will get back to you.

Nisi is for sure more colour true than Lee, or many others.

    Hi Jacques
I have am wanting to invest in the NiSi VND filter however I want to pair it with a pro mist filter too. My question is, does the NiSi VND filter have an additional thread on it to add a circular Pro Mist filter?
    Great video! Love your content.

will have to buy a variable Nd filter for shooting in bright condition , they come in two ranges , 1-5 and 6-9 ,in very bright light 5 is not enough sometimes and if I buy 6-9 it is darker than I need from 7 onwards , so might have to go for either a bright look or a little dark footage than perfection sometimes, so several people on the net are searching for 3-7 range ... if I don't want to change my camera settings to brighten or darken , the question that just crossed my mind and I wanted you to share your views on it is .....
should I buy 1-5 and darken it later or 5-9 and brighten it later ? which is more preferable ?

Use the right filter and expose correctly:) shortcuts always involve unwanted compromise

Swift polarisers are shipping from Nisi HQ now and should be available worldwide in the coming weeks.

Nice review and great footage as always! I can however not recommend this filter, especially when using it on multiple cameras. It is impossible to align the filter! Ideally, the black dot should be centered on top for best polarization. No matter how I screw it on, it simply won't align. There is a noticeable color shift from blue to yellow when rotating the whole filter in your hand and the position of the black dot is crucial.
We use a Simmod VND which has a second ring that holds the filter in it's optimal position. And it has no color shift whatsoever.

Thanks for the feedback Steve. While what you're saying does make sense, you should be using a polariser for polarisation, not a VND. And when it comes to multiple camera setups, you should also be using conventional fixed density ND filters if you are after perfect consistency. Due to the logarithmic change in darkening, it is extremely difficult to give perfect density markings/positions. They have said they can do it, but it will push the cost of the filter up severely as the ring construction will have to be a lot more complicated and each filter will have to be calibrated according to the markings.

@@landscapegear9336 I get your point. The polarizing effect is innate to all variable NDs, that's what I meant. And it needs to be aligned properly in order to have proper polarization. And you're right, for optimal multiple camera setup, I would also rather use fixed filters. Cheers!
