I recall in the novel Kuan Yin said she wanted the three golden leaves she gave to Monkey back when Monkey asked her to subdue Red Boy. And Monkey rejected the proposal. Monkey turned out to be a good negotiator...
The horse, BaiLongMa (White Dragon Horse) actually does do something plot relevant again in the story, in case anyone's wondering. The actual reason he burnt down his dad's palace was because his wife was cheating on him with this nine-headed demon dude, JiuTouChong, who used to be his friend. The group goes back to his ocean home (don't ask how he burnt down an underwater palace) and Wukong, Pigsy, and Dragon Horse basically fight with the nine-headed guy, completely annihilate the palace, kill everyone and get Dragon Horse's wife arrested or something. So yeah. Wanton destruction and unnecessary violence, whoop whoop.

I love sandy so much. I’m about to do a on art project, and I’m basing it of the Journey to the West crew. Only problem is that no one can agree on what sandy is supposed to look like, so I guess I will use your design since it is pretty great. Also, there is a bit you missed. The reason the demon kidnapped the princess was because she lost her memories when she reincarnated, but he didn’t.
I know this is a bit late, but the novel actually describes what Sandy looks like. See the latter part of my article here. journeytothewestresearch.wordpress.com/2018/03/24/the-origins-and-evolution-of-sha-wujing/
I JUST REALIZED SOMETHING!!! While Goku is based on Son Wukong in many aspects, he lacks his bloodlust, severe overconfidence, and petty nature. That was given to Vegeta. Each are two halves of his personality. Gogeta (or Vegito) is Monkey King!
True but Goku is really confident or atleast in og db before he dent to train with kami. I’ll not say he had bloodlust but he was’t bothered when he killed but when he grew, he didn’t like it because he realised it as he grew. Thats also part of gokus character development and I think its well done
Sandy is the one Monkey trust the most when it comes to protecting Tripitaka Ig. In the book, Monkey says to him to disobay their masters orders and to use Monkeys name in vein. And to tell Demons he's (Monkey) still traveling with them if they ever get problems with thise again. So, yeah. This just shows how he still was concernt about their safty even after being kicked out.
I kind of love that even though Pigsy was the one to get him kicked out from the group (and in a manner that got the magic equivalent of a shock collar ser of 3 times no less) when he shows up at his place Sun Wukong is just chill with hanging out - one would think he'd be resentful or full of spite after what he did. Or at least, I DID think that before I remembered that when he got upset at Heaven the first time he just went home, the fighting only started bc THEY sent warriors after HIM. The more I think about it, he's not much of one to hold a grudge is he? Nor does he seem to think others will that much seeing as he keeps going going Heaven for help on the Journey. Maybe the pure impulsivity that runs through his veins means he discards the high emotional stakes to a situation soon after its over?
Or he maybe doesn't see a reason for holding a grudge. Doing that is already tiering for a mortal, imagen this for a immortal, who lives for eternity. I also think he knows that Pigsy doesn't stand a chance agains him to beginn with. So why should he have a grudge agains someone weaker than himself?
So Red made an accurate drawing of her because she is waifu material, not like guan yin levels of waifu material (this rendition made her super cute), but waifu material nonetheless
so basically wukong is the greatest strongest hardhead shounen protagonist who has a drama with his constantly-getting-kidnapped boyfriend and is known to be stupid yet the smartest in the group cuz no one can solve their own problems? Senpai material.
he does have downsides, rages a lot. kills every demon he sees, even the good ones. But i know the reason why, because when he was under the mountain, none of his demon friends visited him. so when he encountered demons he gets rage because everyone ignored him. but over time he becomes calm and wise. in the sequel, he gets his own disciple.
I think it's really interesting how it's shown that the demon really cares about his wife. I think I read somewhere that hundred flowers shame lost her memories, while the demon didn't (or something like that), so that is why she wanted to be freed.

Jack Carroll not quite. The "demon" are actually called Yao. Which is basically non human based half god not yet registered in heaven or fired from heaven. There are different levels of these beings. Some stories portray the younger ones who were just born merely 300 years ago, and have no power other than amplified animal abilities, like a skunk Yao's fart would now be charged with magic, a fox would not yet be able to turn into human form but is able to cause seductive illusions on muggle human. Others have Yao over 900 years old, can fly on cloud, cause flood and nearly ready to become deity. In this story however, most Yao they fight are nearly deities or already way passed the point of certifying to be a deity. One of them can eat Buddha. Our protagonists on the other hand, are restrained, as punishment for their crimes. So of course they struggle. And the point of the story is to have 81 struggles so they may legitimise the transaction.
Right? And if the game has a beastiary you can look up that party member and see he had like 10k HP and 2000 STR or whatever as a boss but then when he joins you he's got like 1/10th of that.

Ok, so the whole thing with Princess Hundred Flower’s Shame and the Wood Wolf Star makes more sense in context, because they both reincarnated. They aren’t their former selves. The issue is that when the Incense Maiden reincarnated, she lost all memory of her former life while the Wood Wolf Star retained his memories. In that light, his actions make perfect sense. He fled heaven and got turned into a demon out of love, only for his love to not remember him or anything. His entitlement makes more sense now, don’t you think? Then it makes you wonder how Princess Hundred Flowers reacted to the information that she’s the reincarnation of a heavenly spirit.
That's a SUPER interesting way to look at the characters in journey to the west, as representations of different and conflicting parts of our minds. Never thought about it that way before at all.
I learned that wukong represents anger, pigsy greed and sandy of idiocy. Those were the three elements that kept people from enlightenment in Buddhism.

Rewatching this series for the uh.. fourth time in as many months, and I just love that bit in the middle where you analyze Monkey's emotional tailspin. Literary analysis is delicious!
10:14 That actually makes perfect sense to me, in those mythologies when someone gets reincarnated they don't get to keep the memories of their past life.
I vividly remember watching multiple adaptation of this particular part of the journey of the west, and it is always, ALWAYS, the most frustrating. Just friggin trust him you- *sighs so hard the heavenly officials hear me*
Kind-of unrelated, but this kind-of makes me wonder what it would be like if OSP ever did a video on a Lovecraft story or some overview of the mythos. Because they're kind-of inherently insane and fairly nonsensical and I'd kind-of love to see like how cute Cthulu and the other horrific creatures from that would be in this art style. IDK, maybe I'm alone on this, but I feel like that would be pretty fun.
Things that happend in this chapter are my guilty pleasure in writting Specificly the moments when Wukong is trying to do good things but he is so chaotic and "weird" that he gets falsley blamed and punished and then not only that put he can never be put out of that misery. This was something that i enjoyed seeing explored ever since i was a kid but sadly only saw "character gets blames" part and even if they deserved the biggest apology, they never got one. It great seeing that something like that is put into such an old story. Psychology stories, my beloved!
master gamer That was actually a joke Wukong made there just to convince his master that what he encountered was a demon. If you read the novel, you will learn that he is the only one among those 3 fellows who is still pure.
Wait, so if Son Wu Kong represents the mind, then is it just by coincidence that in this chapter where he’s gone everything slowly dissolves into chaos and the character who “lost his mind” is perceived as a monster despite still being human? I might just be making something out of nothing but it cool to think about
RubySage718 I don't know what got into him. It's not like he wasn't a coward from the beginning and now he acts all "I'm the best". But how can Tripitaka be so gullible? I mean srsly.
There's this Fan-Manga called Dragon Ball Elsewhere that has Yamcha as a protagonist and it's REALLY good. It has good writing (Better than Toriyama at least) and really fixes a lot of the plot holes original Dragon Ball had before uwu
So I was rewatching this series as I do periodically because this stuff has some serious re entertaining value, when I noticed that the horse has some odd expressions. Every once and awhile theirs a face that says to the rest of the group, "you guys are a bunch of dorks." It's kinda great.
Y'know, in any other story seeing the most overpowered character as relatable might seem arrogant. But Sun Wukong? Yeah, it's surprising how... human he seems? Ha and he's not even human. God I love JttW
That one line is just gold... "And while Tripitaka is paralysed with embarrassment, Monkey smacks the demon in the face" ♪SHOT TO THE HEART...!♪ Compositionally perfect :D
It's interesting that the monk is so holy and pure, and yet this makes him gullible and unable to do anything to take care of himself - instead, he depends on the assistance from monkey, all while chastising him for breaking the rules, even though the rule-breaking is the only thing preventing him from being eaten. I wonder, what does the author mean to imply by this.
Maybe that in the real imperfect world, being 'pure' and 'righteous' isn't always possible. Or that the meaning of right and wrong aren't set in stone like the philosophy's the story is based around might suggest. Edit. I don't know a great deal about eastern philosophies, maybe they're not actually set in stone.
@@beatrix1120 the philosophy of Buddhism states clearly to not follow the sutras as rules but as a guidance, and that we should not hold onto them but use them to stop the reincarnation circle. So this could mean that even Tripitaka was human and very flawled still. Or that Tripitaka has such a big heart he doesn't approve wukong saving him by force and would rather die than letting go of his values, letting other monk take his place. Maybe it's because it could harm his pilgrim to kill more so he doesn't want that (heaven not letting him ascend etc). I haven't read the whole book yet so I can't give an opinion of why I think it may be.

He represents the mind as the only thing holding him (and our mind) back from our true potential is our fleshly desire (lust, sloth, gluttony, ..)
sun Wukong is my favorite character here XD just the way you portray him and the little comments that I have to pause the video to read always make me laugh xD
I haven't been so desperate to read something in ten years and that realization made me cry. I used to crave literature. I wanted to read and read and read no matter what the level of difficulty a story was. This lead to me reading the Odyssey about six times in fifth grade (unabridged) because sure I'd read it but I never grasped it. I wanted to understand everything and now I want to sleep until three pm and now I feel bad. Sorry, did I say bad? I meant I feel like kicking literatures ass by consuming any words within a thousand mile radius of me.
It's doubly enjoyable when you remember this is all from a set of stories from ye-olde China, yet it's already set up in an episodic series format because of the way they were written. This is one product of Chinese culture I can appreciate.

The one I hear about the most is the Bull Demon King. Bowser from _Super Mario Bros._ was originally going to be a bull-man and a blatant reference, before it was pointed out that it was weird for a bull-man to be leading an army of turtles. So they turned him into a turtle but let him keep the horns.
Wait a minute, if the guy wasnt actually a demon, then his kids were not demons either. Did they just murder two innocent kid and acted like nothing happened?
They are stronger than demons because I think:son of a soldier of heaven < son of a demon in power. But when you say it like that...yeah it's totally fucked up.Wrong, but still as fucked up if it was right.
the guy is like a soldier of heaven in the form of demon, and therefore his kids are in demonic forms (very hideous looking), but the book also described them playing together around their mother, showing that their are indeed innocent little children, so yes they just murdered two innocent kid and acted like nothing happened, after all this is a very dark book.
I get a familiar feeling with this episode and I don't know why at first. And then I realized. DIGIMON PULLED THIS KIND OF THING. TWICE! They did it in the first season, when Tai got separated from everyone else by getting sucked up by a portal, only to come back to everyone being scattered. Then they did it again in Frontier, when Takuya got depressed and end up bailing on his quest and tries to go back to earth, only to come back to see his friends either captured or super desperate to save the others.

About the whole love affair thing, apparently the princess was reincarnated into a mortal womb and through such a process become an entire new person. To tie in with buddhist philosophy, this shows that even immortal deities are still trapped in the cycle of desire, change, death and rebirth. Because of one simple and sweet desire, both lovers lost their noble (but still limited) status and suffer the consequences when faced with the chaotic nature of change.
I used to watch the kids show of journey to the west on tv and I was(am still) annoyed by Tripitaka's stupidness on understanding that a Monkey God that lived all his life around Demons clearly knows a thing or two more about Demons! @@Emily12471 I think it’s sort of costly to ask Kuan Yin to help.

True but Goku is really confident or atleast in og db before he dent to train with kami. I’ll not say he had bloodlust but he was’t bothered when he killed but when he grew, he didn’t like it because he realised it as he grew. Thats also part of gokus character development and I think its well done

Sandy: I'm going to kill that pig.
Pigsy: Sandy is going to kill me.
Me: Monkey's going to kill you both for letting Tripitaka get kidnapped again!
Sandy was trying, at the least he seems to be the most level headed of the group
Sandy’s like that chill dude in the group project who’s trying to do his part
I love your comment
Or he maybe doesn't see a reason for holding a grudge. Doing that is already tiering for a mortal, imagen this for a immortal, who lives for eternity.
I also think he knows that Pigsy doesn't stand a chance agains him to beginn with. So why should he have a grudge agains someone weaker than himself?

I wonder, what does the author mean to imply by this.
Maybe that in the real imperfect world, being 'pure' and 'righteous' isn't always possible. Or that the meaning of right and wrong aren't set in stone like the philosophy's the story is based around might suggest.
Edit. I don't know a great deal about eastern philosophies, maybe they're not actually set in stone.

He represents the mind as the only thing holding him (and our mind) back from our true potential is our fleshly desire (lust, sloth, gluttony, ..)

sun Wukong is my favorite character here XD just the way you portray him and the little comments that I have to pause the video to read always make me laugh xD
Monkey: where'd he go? I can't sense his energy, he must a celestial warrior!!
What a mood man, me too
It's doubly enjoyable when you remember this is all from a set of stories from ye-olde China, yet it's already set up in an episodic series format because of the way they were written. This is one product of Chinese culture I can appreciate.
BLACK MYTH: WUKONG ASSEMBLE!
7:06 Your time is now young Dragon!!! I've been waiting for him to be awesome this whole time, I like his effort. :D
Even if Sun Wukong is my favorite character by far.
So Tripitaka is the original dense anime protagonist? He never finds himself with women swooning over him and he just... doesn't notice? Does he?
Ok smacking someone other face while blasting, “Shot Through the Heart,” will never not be funny to me.
My gawd. I love these series.
Damn, and to think this demon gave the Lego Son Wukong two and a half seasons worth of trouble.
I mean they had to buff her in order to make her into a threat lol.
…Or they’re just using a different version of the story.
I know it doesn’t appear it in the video, but the skeleton demon Bai (White) Gu (Bone) Jing (Demon) is arguably one of the most famous demon to come out of JTTW. The Chinese cartoon I watched as a child really made her quite terrifying
What in the world, heroes?!
dont forget themselves were demons as well

I get a familiar feeling with this episode and I don't know why at first. And then I realized. DIGIMON PULLED THIS KIND OF THING. TWICE!
They did it in the first season, when Tai got separated from everyone else by getting sucked up by a portal, only to come back to everyone being scattered. Then they did it again in Frontier, when Takuya got depressed and end up bailing on his quest and tries to go back to earth, only to come back to see his friends either captured or super desperate to save the others.
This is honestly my favourite series on youtube. Like, I tried to think of something better and I couldn't. So well done
I just noticed that the migraine spell is Rick Astleys never gonna give you up
seriously?
wait so this ENTIRE time when tripitaka (idk how to spell)
did the migrant spell ....
HE WAS RICK ROLLING US
Carta The human Actually I think the first time he the spell it was All Star by Smash Mouth. The second time was definitely a Rick Roll.
Its a different song each time
1st time (in part II) its Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen
(then in part 4)
2nd time is all-star by smash mouth
3rd time is rick astleys never gonna give you up
4th time is edgar allan poes the raven then it changes to the stephen universe opening we are the crystal gems
wow i never realized just how painful rickrolling was
About the whole love affair thing, apparently the princess was reincarnated into a mortal womb and through such a process become an entire new person.
Couldn't Kuan Yin at least pop up and say to him "ahem, I gave you this guy to protect you for a reason, yes all those things were monsters and trust him the next time he does something like this because even he isnt stupid enough to kill someone innocent without reason!"
Huge point across magnificently.
I always felt the same as a kid! But I guess if the monk didn't get captured that often they wouldn't go through 81 challenges
Everyone do. The sence which Tripitaka toturne Sun Wukong by killng the demon
👍😁
Journey to the west is littterally an anime tho
well there is a chinese cartoon about it

We need more straight up Shonen Anime adaptations of it. This concept is BEGGING for it.
@@CJCroen1393 Gensomaden Saiyuki isn't a bad start. Though everyone's rather bishie, and Tripitaka/Sanzo has a demon-banishing gun.
@@snukastyle I heard of that one! It looks interesting, even if the adaptation doesn't seem entirely faithful. I've watched the _extremely_ badass opening themes to it, at least.
