- In this video, part one in a mini series on sleep systems, I will be going through the sleeping bags and blankets/quilts I currently use for year round camping, bushcraft, hammock camping, canoe tripping and backpacking. I have owned and used a lot of sleeping bags over the years, some great and some terrible, the ones in this video are ones that I rate well and continue to use as I can rely on them - a comfortable nights rest is important in order to function and complete tasks the following day and I like to be comfortable!
I have listed links to the items shown in the video below where I am able to, items no longer in production or available have the closest equivalent item linked.
Please tune in for episode two - bivvy bags.
I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

Simon. You are so dedicated to your channel & hobby. No matter the weather you are always so committed to provide your viewers something to watch. Brilliant. Cheers, safe travels & God bless. 🙏🏼⛺️😎
Simon, you are my favorite RUclipsr.
I only just come across your channel and i wish i come across it ages ago, the content, tips, information, views and knowledge of materials, and how everything works in bivvy's, tent's and sleeping bags totally awesome. I'm a Welshman living near the Brecon Beacons and i thinkTrekking, Wild camping, Bushcraft and just general taking your dog for a long (all day) walk around the Brecon Beacons, is the best hobby/way of life or feeling you can ever have, just watching your videos promotes that. I've been thinking about doing a charity walk(for a long time) from the Brecon Beacons to Newtown in Mid Wales and back in support of Autism Awareness and Mind, reason being my daughter has Autism and i myself suffered with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and watching channels like your's and many others has given me that kick up the arse i need but until then Corvid has to be flattened to a point due to restriction's i can't see that happening for awhile anyway Thank You for videos/channel keep up the good work and keep safe.
As someone who is new to getting outside this is great information thanks Simon
No bull , end user reviews. Outstanding Simon 🇮🇪🇮🇪
Enjoyed another great vid. I live I. Big bear country wilderness Rocky Mountains. We have a saying because of that. "Remember, a sleeping bag looks like a burrito to a bear, sooo, don't let it smell like one!" In other words, keep it clean so as not to draw a bear. in..hard to run in a bag..kinda a hop if it is needed...lolo
Your videos are just superb! Thank you. They really do help. I'm new to bushcraft/camping and you're videos have informed me so much. Keep up the great work! Thanks again 👍
Danke Simon das du dir die Arbeit machst, um anderen mal eine Auswahl aufzuzeigen 👍
I really appreciate your knowledge. I'm still learning.
Michigan, USA here. I've been to England, we are almost on the same latitude. So all your instructions/demonstration are priceless. Thank You.
Thanks for this I really enjoyed it. It's interesting to see what you UK guys use.
Simon, great channel mate, liked the way you present and great level of detail. looking forward to watching your other videos, I subscribed !
Buffalo kit is brilliant and very popular amongst Forces personnel. Another cracking film Simon. 👍👍
Excellent reviews and video. I swear by Carinthia’s bags, I use a Tropen and a Defense 4, which can be combined.
I like how you explain each system
It's just ridiculous how much I'm looking forward to the bivy episode
:-) me too
nevare5 And me
Cool video man
Haven't even watched the whole Video but I know it will be Awesome 👍👍👍👍🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
Nice sleeping bags, quilts, and breakdown Simon. I'm liking that Buffalo system. Too bad it's not intended for hiking in, but it's really cool. Looking forward to your 3 Part videos on this topic. I'll be watching your uploads for sure in the next three months for sure. Fractured my left fibula in two places last Sunday making my way off the mountain. Yup so I'll be on the sidelines and looking forward to viewing your adventures. Take care bro.
Oh man, sorry to hear about your injuries!! I hope you heal up quickly brother!!
@@simonablokeinthewoods Will do. Thank you.
I like the Lumina 0. I really don't think that it will fit, but I like it. Mummy bags aren't made for us larger guys. Quilts are the way to go for me. Thanks foe showing you kit to us.
I'm beginning to suspect Simon , your self confessed "obsession" extends to more than just stoves 🤔🤔🤔👍😎🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Great little video Simon. Looking forward to part two already .
Fattrucker
Sadly, you are correct in your suspicions!! 😂👍
Thank you for your videos, in general. You seem like a really nice, very generous guy. I'm still floored by the beauty of that canoe you built!
Thank you! 😁👍🛶
Quite a collection you have there 👍
I still just have my old 1988 Coleman 😊
Usually just add a wool blanket if winter camping and keeps me warm. Definitely not an ultralight but it keeps the legs strong.
I like that Buffalo bag
If it ain’t broke! Nice to have a good, simple reliable set up - that’s stood the test of time. 👍 cheers brother.
@@simonablokeinthewoods 😊👍
When I was really young back in the 80's our class did a little one night camping trip and a friend of mine had one of those military sleep system bags. It was huge but it sure looked comfortable!
very useful and informative.thank you.
Great film Simon thank you
Thank you Simon, I love your videos. You always put a smile on my face. The demonstration getting in, or being in the bag was funny. Simon the super bag model.
Love your realness and honesty. It’s been three years since this 3 part series has been produced and in that time I’m hoping that you were able to quit your full time job. Your vids are so good that all your work and effort should be rewarded by RUclips.
I’ve got some equipment from mountain hardware. Love that stuff!
Thanks for another really good film. I find these kit ones really helpful and hope to be getting out on my first overnight wildcamp very soon (only really ever done car camping). I've still got to sort out a wildcamp-sleep system and that's what I'm weighing up at the mo, so great timing Simon. Many thanks
- Chris
Brilliant video Simon, really helpful too. You’ve even got me looking at Canoes now. I’ve an inflatable one which I love but a rigid Canadian is what I’d really like. Looking forward to part two. Very inspirational, thank you.
An upgrade to a rigid boat will totally change your paddling experience - more speed, less effort, more gear, more comfortable, no fear of tearing it - do it!! 😁🛶
Simon, a bloke in the woods Thanks Simon I will, soon. Just got to save a bit more first. Then I’ll be across the boarder into Norfolk for a lesson! 😉, I’ll bring my tarp and hammock!! I take it your not out camping in this weather?
American living in Yorkshire. Love your videos. Stay true my friend.
Cool! Thanks for sharing this with us Simon! I love watching gear videos. It's so fun to see what others use. I hope that you do one on pillows because I need some ideas for both hammock and tent camping. I wish that I could sleep without one but I can't.
Can't wait to see the next one!😊👍👍👍👍❤
Hi Sarah Tree :-) There is a channel called -Justin outdoors. He's such a lovely guy & does the most amazing reviews. He has a post all on pillows * Best wishes from Scotland
@@nseight oh cool! Thank you! I'll check his channel out.😊
@@SarahTree :-) your welcome*
Thanks Sarah, coming up in part 3! 😁
cool!
Good morning Simon. All you need is a Hookah, then you would be Simon the caterpillar in Wonderland! Thanks for the videos! 🤣
Thanks for sharing. I am looking forward to the your bivi episode.
Nice and informative Simon. and as usual captivated with the kit demo. anyone looking for direction should get a lot from this.
I’ve got the buffalo system, had it for about 30 years now and love it. Keep up the great work with the very informative videos.
Pause video....."Yaaay !" :-) Now back to watching. Thanks Simon, a bloke in the woods , I've been really looking forward to this *
👍👍👍
Man I love my inter-webs. They show me how it’s done all over the world! Lots of great info for my area in the USA. Great video Mr. Bloke. Thank you
Great selection of stay warm systems... and I especially like your preference to Synthetic over Down. Down is great in certain areas, but it is not practicable in all conditions. Even sleeping causes Down to absorb moisture from your body. so it is best to air out Down bags daily, while in use. I often times just use a clean sheet that I grab out of the closet, before I leave home. As a barrier between me and my sleeping bag, since I prefer to not wear the same clothes I was wearing out by the campfire, to bed. I keep threatening to sew the edges of a sheet together, to make a giant sock, that I can just slip down into... but I'm too lazy. haha Great video, ATB Simon have fun
Good idea to make a sheet liner! I prefer synthetic if I’m sleeping on the ground, but much prefer down in my hammock - it gets more air and keeps things dry. 👍
Always good to hear/see the whats, whys and wherefores from you, thank you.
When Simon mentioned the practicality of the green one with arm and leg zippers, i braced myself for a giant cucumber strolling through the woods 🥒😂
NOW THAT WOULD BE NIGHTMARE AT 3am IN THE MORNING RUNNING PAST YOU IN THE WOODS I THINK I WOULD END UP LOADING MY PANTS
I am on a bingeing on your videos . Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Simon, Great lesson on sleeping bags. Cold here in New England so don't expect to get out until April! Very informative on sleep systems. Thanks, Jeff from Boston MA.
Great series idea! You are out a lot in all kinds of weather...and you have been for years. So it is valuable to see what you have settled on for all sorts of equipment.
Well, I learned something from that - I never knew that Buffalo were a Sheffield based company. Good to see us Brits making something useful.
It's about time🤣
Thanks for yet another informative video. I'm alreday looking forward to part 2, I've had my eyes on a bivy you showed earlier on, and another look just might make my mind up finally. Cheers!
Thanks mate! Is that the Dutch one? 👍
Thanks mate! Is that the Dutch one? 👍
@@simonablokeinthewoods Yes, that's the one. I get the feeling that it would be just the thing for the swedish west coast, we're soaked with rain more often than not.
Thanks for sharing your collection, I find it interesting to see what others are using out on their adventures in the outdoors. Your video was a perfect before bedtime snack.
I just found you, and I really enjoy watching, and appreciate your videos. I don’t understand why, and others, show equipment that we can’t get anyway. Please, concentrate on what we can buy and use. Thanks, good job.
I like a top quilt strapped to my sleeping pad for ground sleeping. Great for stomach or side sleepers or people who toss and turn a lot and don't want to end up tied in a knot like with a sleeping bag.
We learned to camp with two blankets in Cub Scouts
A double fold and blanket pins
Who had a sleeping bag!
Blanket wrapping is a lost art nowadays. You need to lie in a diagonal fashion, but I am sure you know all about it. For summer season, blanket sleeping is my go choice. Cheers from France!
Did you use toilet paper rolls to do it?
Interesting array of gear, Simon. I think I would like that Buffalo modular system even more than my Us Military MSS. I'll keep my eye out for those. Glad to see the storms haven't kept all of you in the UK down. Be safe and give Mags a pat for me.
Love this channel, second to last time I watched you make your own stove and now this, thanks, great watch as always. Like the 3 part idea, the baker tent two parts really filled a cold autumn night. One of those videos where after two minutes I went and made a cup of tea so I could enjoy the rest. Cheers.
Simon, such amazing timing! I am buying a sleeping bag to go camping next week during the half term and need a winter one, but was baffled (and exhausted) by all the research done so far. I have now decided on the Mountain Hardware, thanks to you! So grateful. P.S. I love how relaxed you look every time you went to "sleep" showing each system haha.
It was hard to get back out of the bag each time!! Once your cozy! 😂
The lamina is a great bag - I hope you like it as much as I do! 👍
Simon, a bloke in the woods tried the bag camping overnight. Got down to 1 degree and I was really cosy. Great buy. Thanks again for a great recommendation.
Nice sleeping bag stash there Simon! Funny is that a Helsport Alta Winter (Pro) just dropped down in my box this week. Nice prices on extreme sleeping bags this mild winter. 👍 Just when I got it I forgot that we had a Charinthia with just good enough winter performance already. My stash is growing.. 😂💪 nice video! 👌
Nice! You can never have too many! 😂👍
Guys, gear and beer! Women get off on closets full of shoes and styles ... guys on the other hand, and more practical, like multiples of stuff that interest them like sleeping bags, tents, stoves, etc. (I'm as guilty as the next, if not a bit more so) I too have tents for all seasons, and then some, and sleeping bags and other gear to match. On the subject of sleeping with blankets, get some "blanket pins," (oversized safety pin) a real aide when you are using blankets as bedding in the wild. The help you "form" the blankets around you, you can even create a double thickness seam on the open side to retain heat, keep your toes covered and warm and snug things around your head and shoulders. I have several Hudson Bay wool blankets that I use for car camping. Great gear and very colorful too.
I need to up my blanket game!! 😁👍
I've had a Lamina 20 for years rated to -6.5c and is warm for me down to just under 0c, in the warmer weather I unzip it so it works all year round. Laminas are really good bags.
I have a Phantom 32 ( rated to 0°C ) & a Phantom 15 ( rated to -9.4°C ). Last May I used the Phantom 15 , started out with thermals and a liner...a half hour later, I ended up in me birthday suit in the thing. Best night under the stars so far ( turned out to be -7°C :-)
Hi Simon! Thanks for showing your bags. Looking forward to the next episode. ATB André
Just brilliant done* Really appreciate your time & efforts in sharing :-)
Great! Looking forward to Part 2!!thnx for uploading!!👍
Great episode, just brought the British Army goretex biviy! Cant wait for the next installment!
That’s a great choice -simple and it does the job! 👍
LOVE the Buffalo bag ! Very well thought out.
Still using a Blacks Icelandic down bag. I bought for 7 guineas in 1958 or 1959. It is ok down to freezing in a tent with a sleeping mat.. No zips or shoulder pads just a plain bag you slide in from the top.. As you can tell i`m fairly old so i`m no hardman who is happy to rough it,. Not bad value for money and it says a lot for blacks gear.. Derek
Hi Simon
Nice little vid on the old bag..(lol)
At least I'm not alone in the world of sleeping bags..my collection sums up to 6..
Looking forward to your next installment 😀👍👍
You can never have too many Phil! 😂👍
I had to go back on your old videos cause man those latest bivi bags series got me hooked! Great advice and stay safe man! Cheers from California
Simon... nice job. I learned much. Thanks for sharing........ Ax
You and me both. I just ordered a Snugpak Softie Elite 5 that I have no need for, yet could not be more exited to get and eventually use. Besides, I only have nine other bags and no one likes an odd number.
😂😂😂 good man! 👍
Great video Simon. Thanks for sharing 👍🏼👍🏼
Hi Simon my wife walked in while I was watching this and said ahh double zip to let farts out who would have known hey. Keep the vid's coming
😂😂💨
See Slim Potatoheads recent winter camping video Pt. 1 Its a hoot!
@@Scotty-gg4gc Note to self don't use three cheese lasange nice one Scotty
Yasss, Simon, thank you for these videos :) Please keep doing all these things! If you would ever like to check out some new gear, look out for Czech brands, like HUSKY (various outdoor gears) or PRIMA (sleeping bags manufacturer). No I don't work for them, I just like them :) Czechs are known to be handy hobbyists and tend to make the best out of the worst (might have something to do with our history!). If you'd like some help on navigating Czech stuff, let me know, more than happy to help! Happy trips!
Thank you! I’m always interested in new gear and makers I’ve not come across - I’ll check them out! Thank you! If I get in a muddle, I’ll give you a shout. 👍👍👍
the buffalo bag is amazing!!
I didnt even kno bout under blankets now i really want a hammock tent. Great video cant wait to watch part 2
Very informative goto introduction for all, good stuff Simon.
What a great honest review :) Always liked your videos Simon, this one seemed like it took a while to create so thanks for your time. I might follow suit & also do a comparison review of my bags and gear, peace.
Hi Hippyswift :-) That would be great..Sending well wishes *
Great stuff man. I can’t wait to see what you’ve got up next. I’ve got a few different systems myself. Thanks for sharing!
Simon..... thans for sharing,... always interesting and informative, as usual!! Best wishes.... Ax
Yikes! I just received Part 3. I don't know how I missed 1&2. I wouldn't miss one of your videos for the world. The under bag for the hammock was fascinating!
Another good one watched on TV
Oh you clarified some questions I'd had. Underquilt, overquilt and so on. Good to know. Nicely organized from warm weather to cold, light to heavy, and so on. Thank you.
Another great presentation. Thanks for the information.
I like the Buffalo. I really like the Buffalo. Great video as always Simon. amb
Great video Simon. Great info. Very well done sir.
Great video Simon I enjoy seeing what other people use for there sleeping systems looking fwd to the next video already 👍😁
really enjoyed that one Simon ,ive not long started using a ugq quilt ,my first really expensive bag but worth every penny and super light and super warm
Nice Bags Simon. TAKE CARE..
Good video Simon, look forward to the next one 👍
Very informative good stuff Simon. excellent video!
I just scored a Mountain Hardware Lamina 35. Sweet!
Another great video keep them coming great reviews and explanation s!
the new british army sleep system is superb mediumweight bag is the dogs nuts and lightweight bag is excellent has built in mozzy net the two combine for -35 and medium weight -15
Enjoyable and interesting video Simon.
I pair my xtherm with a down top quilt for ground sleeping and it is the most comfortable sleep i've ever had in the backcountry. Ill never use a mummy bag again. Thanks for the great vid
Enjoyed that Captain, thank you.
I’m glad you doing this cos I’m in a decision thing. I got my wooly army issue (New) 😂. But sleep bags are poxy. Take up too much room for not really worth it. Modular sleep system you need a 120l long back it’s ridiculous. Jungle bags forget it in winter or - camps etc. I need to solve it I only carry a 45l
Thanks for sharing this information with us! Great video.
Look up Wiggys, probably the best bags around,I imported 2 from Colorado USA 🇺🇸 and basically its called a FTRSS SLEEP SYSTEM with a core bag and an overbag,I have the super light bag which takes you down to -20, Ultima Thule bag -30 and an Antarctic bag -40 all using g a filling of Lamilite which every bag can be machine washed and never lose its capacity and every bag comes with a lifetime guarantee, worth a look 😉
Great video, I sold my buffalo system years ago, I was always sorry that I sold my lightweight outer bag. I'm a down lover myself.
As for blanket camping unless it's a warm summers night or I have a long fire then I'm cold, wrapping yourself up diamond fashion is the best way to blanket camp but it's fiddly to do and moving around messes the whole system up.
It's woodland romanticism, best way is to use a lightweight down bag and a blanket on top, that'll keep the retro crowd happy .....ish
Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and expertise with us.
Thanks mate!
Nice idea to use a lightweight bag under a blanket - stops those sparks from holing it too - ruined a few bags that way!! 👍
You have a nice collection of "fart sacks", Si! As a previous commenter stated, the Buffalo bag/s is similar to a German military bag I used one time while in service during the '80s. I'm looking forward to part 2.
Cheers Gordon. I had one of those German tank crew bags - good fun, but not very warm! Mine was requisitioned by my kids for dressing up! 😂
Another great video 🙂
The Buffalo system is good for driving Landrovers.
superb collection S. like you say it'd be nice if those buffalo bags could go on a diet as they are amazing.. look forward to your bivvy bags..
