Simon, I was photographer for a expedition in the jungle. We attempted a Portage over a waterfall, unfortunately my camera bag decided to part company. WHEN WE CAUGHT UP DAMAGE WAS DONE. THE SHOP BACK IN THE MAINLAND TRIED BUT FAILED TO RESUSCITATE.....soooooo the lens works great to start a fire...lol Hope your camera is brought back to former glory!.. May your feet be sure on the trail, your campfire warm at night...and the trail tales are true!
Nothing beats a good old Trangia burner. I love mine. I also have the Trangia 25 cook kit. Bit big for back packing, but real nice for bicycle touring. Stay safe
My Grandmother had a description for wind like the she would say in her Northern Ireland accent, "It's a Lazy Wind, it blows through you rather then around you"
Best parts: [1] seeing that Simon is healthy in this time of trouble, as I was worried about him; [2] that giggle-inducing gear disappearing / reappearing act perfectly synchronized to the music.
I wanted to say absolutely the same about nr 1. I was never more looking forward to your next video, so I know, you are alright. All the best for you. Stay well. Best greets from Austria
I absolutely love the Norfolk coast when i lived in East Anglia. And England, great times, and very funny people. God bless you all. Thank you Simon, great stuff.
Finally, someone who includes camera and tripod in their camping kit. I've been trying to figure out how to keep things light, because camera gear isn't exactly small and light and not much you can do in that department, so best bet would be to go as light as possible with everything else.
Great to see you back on our screens again Simon. Glad you’re well. Thanks for sharing your kit list. I personally always love to see the kit you use. You choose and buy wisely. My wish list just gets bigger every time! Thank you. Stay safe, look after the family and Maggie of course. Atb. Paul.
Thanks for the tour of your back packing kit. Good high quality gear that has served you well. Stay safe and healthy in isolation, Simon. We are living through times they will talk about long after we are gone from this place.
Thank you! I can be a job to keep the weight down, and sometimes a bit unnerving taking away those ‘safety’ items - I didn’t take any spare clothing on this hike for example - and risked the weather - if it had been pouring with rain, I’d have been in a different situation for sure! 👍
Nice kit, learned a few tricks . Experienced hikers always have a trick or 2 to teach. Thankyou ! P.s: A dependable disposable lighter " IS " bushcrafty ( is that a word) . First item that goes into any fire kit is a trusty quick fire source .
Brilliant video with great tips and reviews. I need to sort my possible pouch the same as yours. Much appreciated and thank you for taking the time to make the video.
So, the intro. I didn't know what to do with that. Being from Texas, I associate very different images with Mariachi music. Way to keep us on our toes! Loved it! I carry dental floss in my sewing kit. That stuff won't break and the wax makes it super easy to use.
Nice pack. Well organized and efficient. Smart choices in your basic survival and first aid kit. I carry the same stoves. Very good choice. I made a wind screen from a piece of aluminum flashing material, just folded up. I unfold it and it works very well. Cheap 😄
Fantastic, thank-you so much for filming your adventures Simon. I live very close to Weybourne - that beach is very windy and harsh, the tarp did well to stay in one piece.
I’ve watched this sooo many times as it is sooo useful. I’m still utterly amazed at your packing of the bottom compartment. If I had filmed myself trying to load the bottom compartment with my sleep system it would’ve made for great slapstick comedy of a man fighting with his backpack🤩👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hi Simon, thanks for sharing your kitlist, always interesting so see what others are using and why. I've been catching up on your earlier videos and enjoying them, it provides a welcome relief at this time.
Just got to see this An excellent presentation Loaded and to the point My Trangia is also ages old I hiked too long with just an Army poncho, so now I live in luxury and use a 3x3 tarp
It’s good to see your being safe but continuing to film and provide EXCELLENT content. I’m ordering sand pegs because of this video. We love the beach 🏖 And hate cartwheeling sun shades. You provide wonderful product description with actual footage of its use. Wonderful film production. Thanks. Stay safe & God bless 🙏🏼⛺️🎥😎
Im only on the titles/start of this vid and im already loving it! Mariachi music for an intro is as bonkers as it is brilliant!!!! Bloody love it mate!
Great video. Thanks for taking the trouble to post. Not sure that 17 kgs (37lbs) can be described as "lightweight" as you do in the title. I would hate to have to carry your normal(non lightweight) gear!!!
Brilliant tutorial !! nothing flash nothing clever - just good safe sound advice a breath of fresh air !! my only advice genuinely ment don`t load your self down with ` survival ` gear you don`t need you have the perfect balance & carry a back up mobile with 4 different net work sim cards - the best advice i was ever given was use two walking poles ( now im 50 ) really does keep the pain down monday morning back at work ...
Once again a fantastic and informative video. Thank you Si. In these uncertain times videos like this help all of us that are itching to get out! Stay safe Uncle Si Brows 😘
Hi Simon, I am always surprised how many little and big bags people take with them. Yes your stuff is more organized, but how much weight do all those little bags add to your kit? A tarp can be rolled up and kept that way using a rubber band or stretchy para-cord. Possibles pouch, great. A semi-sturdy ziplock bag would do almost the same job, is lighter, and keep it waterproof too. A sleeping bag does not need a compression bag. Instead put your sleeping bag in your backpack to fill up empty gaps in your pack. A tent does not need a little bag, like the tarp. You eliminate all these extra little bags, replace them with simpler things like stretchy para-cord, and you will save some weight.
I see what you are saying and it would definitely make a difference to weight, but I’d never get all that gear in without compressing it into bags -also makes finding, packing and organising gear much easier - I like my gear compartmentalised and stowed in order. 👍
GREAT NORTENO MUSIC! That lifts spirits all over the Southwestern United States! I have a good sampling in my CD collection and have even seen one of my favorite bands perform on the Plaza Major in Madrid, right outside my hotel window. I always liked the mesh airflow back technology, beginning a good few years ago.
Said it before (maybe here!) but the thermarest x-therm is one of the best pieces of equipment I've ever bought. Had it about 2 1/2 years and I haven't touched any of my others since, regardless of the time of year. That said, I'm not sure when I'll be using it again! Thanks for the vid, atb.
Another terrific video Simon - great work. I've been watching your videos over the past few days & am really enjoying them - really well filmed & edited - you must spend ages on the editing 👍 I'm always seriously impressed when I see the kit that many of you guys get into such a small pack! I struggle to get my gear into a 90L rucksack let alone a 38L one! 🥴
Cracking , professional , informative and very watchable video ... especially in this difficult time .... I see your relaxation reading was about Shackleton ... a true explorer and leader of men whom I hold in high esteem . I am still using Aluminium lids made after watching one of your earlier Videos

I have simple tastes. First, I click the like button. Then I get hot, delicious tea. Finally, I settle comfortably to enjoy Simon, A Bloke in the Woods being super awesome on my screen.
Thank you Simon, another great video! I used to use an MSR Micro Rocket stove, until one day a mate of mine decided to light up a candle as I was screwing the gas canister to it. The valve was open, and the gas arced to the candle and blew itself about thirty feet into the bush. I use a mini-Trangia now, with the same box stove as you, and a purple fluid...it's fondue fuel, odourless, and no smoke. Much of the gear you use is the same as mine, though yours has seen many more miles; a good thing! I love the choice of reading!!! Stay safe mate, cheers!!!
You can carry a knife with a good reason, so as long as it wasn't something like a "rambo" knife or something silly you can get away with a sheath knife or something similar while hunting/camping etc.
Glad to see all of the gears worked out And I totally understand about the pee bag When you are that confined and got to go I don't see one problem with it so long as you screw that cap on the right way and it also adds additional warmth and as long as you clean it out really good for the next time and use it strictly for one purpose only
I bought the lumo light on the back of this video. Delighted with the cost and how bright it is for the size. My OCD meant I modded it by swapping out the carabiner for an adapted triangular-shaped paper clip so that it hangs down straight off the lantern hoop in my tent

In Holland we have a smart lockdown wich means we do stay at home mostly but also that we can go out when fit. In the province where I live (Fryslân, in the North) there aren't that much corona cases, probably because we where in early lockdown and listened to it...

Brilliant sound of the sea at the end, as a kid every year we used to stay in a bungalow on the top of the dunes overlooking the sea slight further south [near Hemsby] I’ve Wonderful memories of going to sleep while listening to the waves roll up on that beach.

@@simonablokeinthewoods Thanks for the reply. It's from a poem called 'Walking' by Thomas Traherne, a 17th century writer. he wrote about nature and the experience of the outdoors, long before the likes of Wordsworth, Keats et al. I think he deserves to be better known... Sláinte!

Sláinte!
