      I've bought a lot of Dragon Shield Matte and Dual Matte's this year, and things are definitely hit or miss in the QC department. I just started playing this summer, and the first pack of sleeves I ever bought were matte Jet's based on my friends recommendation. They shuffle great. The edges look great. Not quite as good, but very acceptable, were the matte Night Blue and matte Sky Blues. My biggest issue has been with the dual matte's. The edges have been pretty rough on basically every pack, some worse than others.
      Dual Mattes: Glacier, Peach, Wraith, Orchid, Eucalyptus, Lagoon, and Glaciers.
      The worst of the bunch are the Glaciers and Peach. Extremely difficult to shuffle because the edges are so rough from what I assume is poor cuts from the factory. Some of the peach had the bent corners like you showed. The rest also have rough edges, but not as bad, so I can actually shuffle them easy enough even though they don't feel nearly as nice as the Jet's.
      I just bought a pack of Ultra Pro Eclipse sleeves to try. I will add Katana's to the list and try those next. Hopefully Dragon Shield can sort things out - I really like all the color options they have.

    I typically use the Dragon Shield Blue Matte (the one with "Dennaestor" on the box), this way I can move cards between decks and not have to take the time to change the sleeve. I've noticed a change in the texture size on the back of the sleeve, it's just noticeable enough, if you're looking for it. Thanks for the recommendation of another sleeve brand, I'll be trying them out!

  • @drekarus8113

    So I was using kitanas and I put in foil cards. And you know the foil bend has been happening with these new cards. So overtime my full deck becomes curled with kitana sleeves. With dragon shield it helps stopping the foil curl. And it’s easier to double sleeve with dragon shield vs kitana. But I agree kitana feels better.

  • @scuffedwizard
    @scuffedwizard Год назад +10

    Out of the 3 packs of dragonshield sleeves I bought last year, 2 were very fragile (corners split in regular shuffling) and 1 was outright defective (had a horizontal discolored line on each sleeve).
    I don't know how, but my 4 years old DS sleeves are still holding strong, with zero sleeves needing to be replaced for the last 2 years.

  • @Mat-tg4fk
    @Mat-tg4fk Год назад +64

    I also have done extensive testing throughout multiple brands. Unfortunately katanas are still not """"PERFECT ENOUGH""""" measured for double sleeving cards. Dragon shield tolerances are so specced to double sleeve cards i basically consider them unacceptable for single sleeving. Katanas are using way tighter build and better materials which I think is essential for the 60 card format grinders that constantly swap cards. As long as you pick the right colors dragon shields are still the way to go for that specific color AND double sleeved cards. Many colors are sadly trash.

    • @MTGDeckmasters
      @MTGDeckmasters  Год назад +8

      True. One thing I have noticed is that Dragon Shield sleeves are much more durable when double sleeved because they are not as tight. Maybe they are just engineered that way...

    I am not surprised that over the past two years companies may have had to sacrifice some quality control, experienced supply chain issues, and as a result may have seen a drop in quality. Hopefully this is something that companies are able to remedy in the future with these issues all but resolved. Now that you mention it, I took a look at a commander deck I bought along with fresh dragon shield sleeves about 2 weeks before christmas. Didn't even play the deck yet, just shuffled it a couple of times to test opening hands... maybe 10-15 proper shuffles and yeah, 5 out of 100 sleeves already have bent corners. I have a set of sleeves from a couple years ago that is in better condition after a lot more gameplay. These new ones were the snow dual matte dragon shields.

    Personally I have been using nothing but dragon shields for years, I've yet to run into any of these issues but maybe that's just because I only ever use matte black dragon shields. Buy some new boxes in the future and see if I run into these problems, and if I do I will definitely switch to your recommendation. Appreciate the video, if this is a common issue especially continuing on in the future then Dragon shield needs to be called out and either have their place as the best leave company replaced with someone else that deserves it or they need to fix their quality control leaves that they were before. Appreciate the video calling them out, always important to make sure that the top dog doesn't get too comfortable in that spot, they have to work to keep it.

After one tournament all the corners were bent, some corners were split and the edges of every sleeve caught on the others, the shuffle was awful. I complained to the retailer, who replaced them. I've also been pushing for folks to use Katanas, but folks should be wary; Ultimate Guard is pushing for stores to buy their new sleeves called Cortex. This is quite interesting. I've noticed the opposite with me in that katana sleeves don't feel near as good as dragon shield. Shuffling with katana sleeves feels so weird while dragon shield ones shuffle quite smoothly. To be fair in my case though my dragon shield sleeves are only on my Yugioh decks while the katana sleeves on only on my magic decks. That might make a difference for me.
    Also my sleeves are over a year old so this is probably a more recent problem that I haven't been affected by. I'll get some dragon shield sleeves soon and test.

    From what I have experienced certain colors of dragon shields shuffle well one way and if you flip them the other way they shuffle horribly and have that cracking noise. The off color from different boxes of same color has been a known issue. I still prefer dragon shields over any other sleeves because of the extra space at the top. I dislike that katanas have no extra space at the top.

    I agree… I had the same problem: I bought the matte gold and the brushed with the dragon cub as artwork and the quality is ridicolously poor: the matte are hard to shuffle due to irregular corners and I’ve already ripped 10 or more, while the brushed one (that were the safest) are even worse…I had a pair of matte blue bought in 2020 and they are still durable and easy to shuffle as the first day….DragonShield lost so much in quality in these last 2 years and I thought it was me until some feedback…

    Only just recently (as in last week lol) became aware I have an ACTUAL "local game store", as in it's only a 5min drive away (as opposed to what I would've formerly called my "local" game store...which was actually 4ish towns away, and about a 20min drive haha), and this newly-found store keeps Katana's in stock. Hadn't ever came across any irl before, I don't think. So I'll probably end up giving them a try.
    But honestly (and I know I'll get crucified by anyone that sees this comment lol), the "best" sleeves I've ever, EVER owned is a set of Ultra Pro's, from 2008 (the ones where the sleeve's back image is meant to look the same as an actual MTG card, except the "Magic" text is yellow, as opposed to the blue it is on the actual cards).
    And keep in mind, these sleeves were from back when any Ultra Pro sleeves with "images" on the backside weren't actually printed onto the sleeve, but like a decal or something, that was pressed ONTO the actual sleeve itself, so there were a TON of issues with sleeves that would start peeling at the corners as the image seperated from the back of the sleeve hahaha.
    And yes, out of the 80 sleeve pack, I've had about 5 or 6 of them become unusable due to that...but the sleeves are FIFTEEN YEARS OLD lol. Like I can't believe they've held up so long, being Ultra Pro, no less lol. Idk...I did get extremely lucky clearly, and I love them so I'm thankful for that small win. Lol

      Maybe it's because the quality of Ultra-Pro was much better 15 years ago. I have similar art sleeves I bought in 2016 (Gideon, Ally of Zendikar) and they started peeling like crazy after a fee weeks. Note: That was before I shuffled like I do now

I got suggested dragon shields, tried them, loved them, and used them ever since cuz ultra pros eclipse didn't have the shuffle feel I wanted back then. But dragon shields gone down in quality do much that they might be worse than that new product line version of the eclipse sleeves and eclipse sleeves mightve just gotten better better over time.

    I got back into magic recently to do a few EDH decks and I bought all Dragon Shield matte sleeves. I’ve actually been severely disappointed with them. The shuffle feel isn’t good anymore, they feel like they’re all catching every shuffle, I’ve had multiple sleeves split on me in the past week (and I’ve shuffled these particular sleeves maybe 30 times in total), I was considering swapping to Katana (my only issue is the lack of colors), and several videos have been confirming my thoughts. Going to track some down and make the swap and give them a shot!
    I did get one pack of Classic DS sleeves to see if they feel better, going to swap that deck in question to those and give it a shot, but if they don’t feel AMAZING, I’m swapping to Katana immediately.

    You’re shuffling the cards incorrectly, that’s how sleeved get damaged, you have to glide them from the corners to prevent air pockets for dust and air to get in but more importantly so they don’t get caught inside other cards. Also you’re slightly bending the corners doing it that way.
