    I ran wreckers for over 30 years and watching all these builds I feel the hydraulic boom and winches gives you a big advantage. Put a hand throttle on the back or an electric idle kick up. Hydraulic winches rule.

    • @SwedesGarage
      @SwedesGarage Год назад +24

      As a former wrecker driver I have to agree with you, I had on my wrecker a switch that raised the idle to 1200 or 1800 rpm what ever i needed. An electric winch can't pull as an hydraulic can.

    Bigger pump
    Proportional valves
    With that you can pull at very low speed and moving your handle, you increase the speed of the winch.
    With all this, you’ll have a big advantage towards the other wreckers.

    Hydraulic winches work better for long winching sessions, and are also rated to hold the weight because they are normally worm gear driven at that size. You can make hydraulic winches pull faster by increasing the idle for more fluid flow.

    Switching to electric seems like a down grade. I wonder if it was a wrong sized pump or a restriction in the system that caused them to spool so slow.

    • @cheerdiver

      Notice the hyd motors are perpendicular to the retrieval drum, this means they are worm gear driven. (50-100+:1)
      This also prevents any reasonable chance of a 'run away', should a cog tooth break under extreme load.
      Downgrade for sure.

      @haroldphipps3457 Год назад

      Jeepin Dave, you are 💯 % correct.
      The noise the pump is making is telling it is starving for oil, or, it is junk.
      That said, a hydraulic winch will not run as fast as an electric. Even one that has been converted to two speed.
