1/2 rolls of 120 film used to be available for the Japanese market for street photographers taking paid for photos of tourists. They would take 4 photos, get them developed straight away & get you to meet them at an arranged time & place later in the day to get your photo

Also used for tourist group photos. You can shoot sheets with it too, at least on my GL690 which has a 100mm and interchangeable lenses. Try some cyanotypes with the big negs too!
If 220 is double the length of a roll of 120, perhaps a half roll should have been a 020?

The story I heard was that back in the day the Japanese tour operators would take pictures of the tour group then remove the film and the prints would be ready at the end of the tour. The 4 frame 120 film was only available in Japan for the tour operators. Unless you've owned this camera since day one never trust the counter. I had mine cleaned and repaired. The winder is the weakest link in the camera and the winder mechanism will break inside and if you can't find a donor your out of luck. My tech asked me if I wanted him to reset the counter as it is easy to do when the camera is opened up and the bottom plate is off. As for the winder don't horse it around and use your thumb to slow the return rather than letting it snap back. The guts of the winder are mostly plastic so will break over time if abused.

The counter on the bottom of the camera is there to show how many rolls have gone through the camera.
The shutter has a 500 roll life expectancy, so would have been returned to Fuji for shutter replacement by professional users once the counter reached 500 back in the days when they were current.
Awesome shots. Have been thinking about getting a GW690... the Fuji(ca) rangefinders are all pretty cool to me. The GA645 also does out-of-frame imprinting I believe to record the time and info for each shot.
At the airport locally, I try to go through the new mmWave machines, which do not emit any ionizing radition and are film-safe (in the US, they are usually smaller and don't require you to separate your stuff into a dozen bins). But they are still pretty rare. My local airport only has 1, but I always aim for it. lol.
I have one, and love it - I use it for landscape primarily and portraits. A roll of perfectly exposed Velvia through this is a joy....

I have a fujica 690 too. All time favorite camera. Hands down. I love shooting Delta 3200 in it. The negative is so huge that 3200 looks like 400 speed film in 35mm. It’s great.
I refer to mine as my ‘clown camera’. I use it for landscapes in the desert Southwest here in the states. Great vid!

Look up Austin Augie. He uses a GW for a lot of his street work in NYC.
Just being fussy, but whatever you are doing for processing sucks. Utterly zero shadow detail. With 6x9 please stick to HP5 ,/ Kentmere 400.
I love the telephoto perspective compression with the field of view of a wide normal lens, which is about equivalent to a 39mm lens on full frame. Medium format digital sensors aren't really that much larger than full frame, compared to the 6x9cm frame. You can only achieve this depth on medium and large format film. Digital cameras have to do a panoramic mosaic to duplicate this look.
It was - and still is for film - the most common camera for wedding photographers in Japan. Wedding photography is very staged in most cases here, so a camera like this gives exceptional results on a tripod.
3:58 Reminds me of when I was a child in the mid 1980's my parents took us out to Spain for our first ever overseas holiday and they were still building all the hotels around us on the coast.

I've seen the cameras for sale on Japan Camera Hunter and other sites, but wondered about how much the authorities here in the UK charge when you import them. If you could give a rough idea and how easy/difficult the process is, I'd be very grateful.
Rog I have the GSW690111 and its a great camera for landscape shots, I have also tried the 35mm panos in it and had some good results, I also own a ND6x17 and thats another level.

Speaking of panoramic - you can simply take your 6x9 negative, and crop it down to a 4x9 or 3x9.

Great video, it’s a stunning camera. I totally understand how someone can get addicted to using cameras like these, but I much prefer the 6x8 or 6x7 format cameras. I struggle with composing a decent image when using 2x3 format cameras, it’s the same with full frame, it’s too long for portraits and not long enough enough for landscapes.. can’t win either way. My ideal format is 6x8.
I've tried a couple of portraits. Belt to head sort of comp. I guess it's a case of settling down with a certain field and finding its benefits. Festivals I can see working

I also love, love, love my Fuji GW690 III. I can also recommend trying infrared photography (Rollei Infrared with 720nm filter exposed at @iso 10-15) with the Fuji. The results are amazing.

When I traveled last summer I ordered film and had it shipped to my destination. Before I returned I sent the film out to the lab. Totally avoided my film (unexposed and exposed) going through X-rays and scanners.
Good call Erik. Last time I put it all through by hand and no scanners but this time I thought I'd see what happens! Ouch! So many say it doesn't affect lower speed films but it certainly made mine a bit foggy on the base
that is one big camera don't think you can hide that one in the street.
We used to use a gx617 to take large group photos. That’s a beast. Four shots.
The G617 or GX617 is a camera that's still on my wishlist. 4 frames a roll 😅

I’ve not taken film abroad since the early 2000s. But I do recall a roll of Kodachrome 200 having a hint of red in the dmax areas after going twice through hand luggage X-ray. Kodachrome 64 was fine as was Kodak 125 Plus X
I had the original Fujica GW690 and used that for street, it was an amazing camera and the negatives where massive! - sadly I sold it to pit towards my Leica.
But it's certainly a camera I'd buy again in a heartbeat! But prices aren't what they where, think I paid around 400 for mine... Be lucky to get a good one for around 800 now!!
It was really a portable landscape camera ether a portable alternative to a plate camera, or a big step up in negative quality from 35mm. without the lens articulations of the former or the accessory (lens) flexibility of the later. A small intersection of use case, but significant for some projects because of the limitations of film emulsions and the contraptions needed to get the best from them. I would have loved one back in the day for landscape and street abstract B&W. even environmental portrait it would kick the ass of Leica for the tonal richness of the final print and likey matched it or better for sharpness.

I purchased the Fuji GSW690 rangefinder with fixed 65mm wide-angle lens to replace my worn-out Mamiya 6x6cm TLR wedding camera with 55mm wide-angle lens.
I also purchased a Fuji GW670 rangefinder with fixed 90mm normal lens to replace my worn-out Mamiya 6x6cm TLR wedding camera with 80mm normal lens.
I used my Fuji rangefinders primarily for landscapes, large group portraits, and weddings.
The Fuji GSW690 (65mm 5.6 lens) is a great camera for landscapes. Putting film below ISO 800 through carry-on x-ray is generally fine. I always ask that film is inspected by hand, usually no problem but I've been turned down at busy security stations. Film, especially high ISO film, passed through checked baggage inspection will probably get fogged to some extent and should be avoided if you care about this.
Hi there ! I got a GSW690III and i also love it ;-) Your question "what was ist built for" ... as long as i found out there is the story that they were made for school photographers !!! Imagine, it could at least make sense - a quiet simple camera, two versions, 90mm for smaller groups and 65mm for bigger groups, with every tiny face sharp and identifiable !!! (You CANT do that on 35mm !!!) Also for sports groups of any size ... and well today it of course makes for an excellent landscape camera, althogh i think "traditionally" the 6x7 viewfinders as the Mamiya7 have been the designated travel photograpy cameras, they were "a little bit smaller" with the same quality in resolution
Last week I bought a very nearly mint GL690 body and yesterday I ordered a 100mm f3.5 lens (the second) for it. The GL is one of the older models of the 609's which had interchangeable lenses. It is very difficult to find either these older bodies, or the lenses for them, in nice condition since most have had a hard life with commercial photographers and, in any case, both were painted with low quality enamel at the factory. The later GW series like yours were much better finished. The first lens I bought had to be returned since the aperture control did not work. I see online that this is not an uncommon fault so watch out! The Fujica 609's may be mockingly called the Texas Leica but I am hoping to see far higher image quality from this Fujica than any 35mm Leica can produce, simply because of the negative area which is 5.5 times greater. Since a 35mm 200 ISO colour negative has a resolution equivalent to around 4 megapixels in digital-speak, the 6 x 9 negative should deliver 20-plus megapixels worth of sharpness. That's modern pro-digital territory. Of course, the lens will have to be as good as folks say it is in order to get the full benefit. So here's hoping.
It seems film is Not safe for air travel. Well truthfully you were in a war zone! OK not there but unrest everywhere! I been in those! landed at an airport, in a guerilla war! we had to bring our cameras into airport! Luanda! Water and feces pouring down he steps! Guess I didn't get coffee or anything. Warning! Taking photos could get one SHOT! So a lil fogging, guess OK. What an awful desert! The pits!
I have the mark ii version of the GW690. A fantastic camera with a beautiful lens. It was big with tourism photographers in Japan in the 70s. The resolution is outstanding and I mostly use it for my documentary photography including portraits, it’s wonderful for that….and yes, I also get the “diiiing” after pressing the shutter release 😂
Marvellous commentary, Rog. Today it was all about strap ons, clocking back a speedo and taking a spit roast to a vegan convention. You should be on the stage, mate. Seriously though, another fantastic episode with a format I shoot myself. The only problem with 6X9 is the damage to the pocket, given the price of films these days.
I have a GSW690III, I shoot Velvia and Provia. On a light table the images are absolutely beautiful. Nothing like it.
seen Nick Carver in Andalusia, Spain. He uses The Big Fuji and Tech camera. The Fuji definitely make a "Ping" in shutter release. Worth seeing.
For the X-ray on film. When I was leaving the UK the guy said that only film with ISO higher than 400 would be hand checked, any thing below would be x-rayed

I have five 6x9cm cameras. One is a Fuji GSW rangefinder, two are pinhole, two are Holga, and one is a folder.
Roger, very good video! I own the same exact camera/model and for years I heard the "ping" when releasing the shutter. I wasn't sure if here was something wrong with my camera, but now after watching your video, I understand that this pinging noise is normal. Thanks so much! Steve (New York)

Great review and I love the images from the farmers market! I have the GSW version (also from JCH) and looove it. A great projects camera.
I have the Fujica GW690 first model and it renders sharp images. The lens is probably one of the sharpest lenses that I have.
Use my battered old GW690 mk 1 for Family and landscape. Out and about the super ikonta folders and TLR's are more convenient. - Nice info on the airport and film. Not traveled with film for over 20 years. The mk1 GW690 (1978 vintage) makes the same strange spring reverb sound.
I don't ever remember colour film from the 80s and 90s getting hit by scanners back then. Maybe they are more powerful today
The counter on thebottom of the camera is a service indicator. I do not remember the numbers but this will indicate to a professional photographer when to have the shutter serviced to ensure accuracy.
I had the 670III. I always shot the vertical compositions with the viewfinder above the lens and the front shutter release just under my finger. It's a more comfortable grip.

I admire your dedication to the craft at 6:12 😄 In regards to XRay, I had an incident with Agent Shadow after it went through an X-ray at Stanford. The unexposed part of film had a thin wavy line, but it was not visible on exposed frames. None other film were affected. I would never put my film in a registered luggage though as I expect they blast them with higher doses to screen them thoroughly. There is a recent video from Lina Bessanova who tested this matter thoroughly
In future when I travel I will ask to get the films hand inspected Matt. Unless I can buy and develop local wherever it will be. Base is not as clear as normal across all the films.

I have the GW690, the first version. It's a beast but I love it.
I've got 2 of these beasts, the GW690III and the GSW690III with it's 65mm f5.6 lens. To it I attached a bulky Metz 60CT4 flash for fill in flash ... and I did street photography with it :-D in China in the 90ties. I used Provia 100 - 220 format rolls which gave me 16 shots per roll.
I can imagine you have some beautiful negatives from the streets of China back then. Do you share them Stefaan?
I believe the half rolls were used to take pictures at fairs, in the zoo, amusement park of people develop quickly and sell them.
But that wouldn't be the single use of a whole line of cameras with 2 (3 for the last generation) different film formats and 2 different focal lengths.
I have GW690 and GSW680 III. I prefer the 680 format actually and 65mm is a perfect focal distance both in the city and landscapes. The Fujinon lenses are really amazing.

An amazing camera, although personally I own it's brother the GW680iii, and grandfather, the GSW690mk1 (with B, not T, and no hood). These bodies were used for tourism photos and other quick turnaround use cases. They would typically do contact prints. The roll counter was for maintenance, as the shutter was supposed to be serviced every 1,000 rolls. The counter on the bottom should never be relied upon to indicate wear and tear, because it is very easily reset zero.
I use a medium blue flash gel over the viewfinder to increase the contrast on the rangefinder patch, which I find to be a bit difficult for my old eyes. You can Also use a marker, but I actually don't prefer that option, I find the blue flash gel to provide superior contrast.

Excellent photos. I like the very deep blacks in the images, I'm always too afraid to do that in my photos. Spent too long doing digital photography and trying to fit everything into the histogram.
I have the old all metal G690 BL, and the shutter has a very distinct ring as well. It's like hitting a tuning fork, goes on for at least two seconds after taking the photo. First I was annoyed by it, but now I think of it as a fun quirk. Quite unlike any other camera sound.
EDIT: Also, you don't seem to be too keen on doing slides, but try out a roll of slide film in the 6x9 if you get a chance. I've shot some original Velvia (RVP, 90's recipe before Velvia 50) and they look just insane even with my bare eyes. Looking at some of the slides from last summer makes me want to jump into those pictures.
I have tons of family slides. They are beautiful to look at. That ping does make me chuckle.
Regarding the security checks in the airports, I had the same experience in my last two journeys in Libya and in S. Korea. I told the security officers about the films, they took them somewhere to avoid the x-ray scanner, but the photographs were a little foggy, as you said. I am wondering how does it work when we buy films imported from overseas. All the goods coming from overseas have to pass through a security check before the final clearance, that is in most cases a parcel size x-ray scanner, but in this case the photographs are neat and clear.
I've always wondered that. How film gets from UK from Ilford to the rest of the world. Last time I got my films hand checked without scanning. Took a bit of time explaining.
My OM4ti makes an annoying pinging sound, and has a very crunchy film wind. It's a great camera, but it's funny how these things do impact the experience of shooting.

I have the GSW690III. Great camera for landscape. I use my Rollie for shooting street photography. The only problem with the Rollie is that it draws a lot of attention.
Yes I can imagine because the Rollei is a camera people recognise, and it looks great!
I read somewhere once that its targeted market was originally for large group shots of people (bus tours, weddings etc). NO IDEA if if there’s a grain of truth to this but heard it suggested many times.
Sounds plausible. Coming from the late 60s weddings where only a few shots were taken of immediate family outside the church or wherever
I have one. In the day it was nicknamed the Texas Leica.
Camera was used in Japan for quick group photos like at theme parks or zoo. They made a direct 6x9 contact print as the actual picture that you could pick up at the end of the day :)

love the images they look awesome I have an earlier 690 that I’m in the middle of a love hate relationship with when you pushed your film from 100 to 400 do you then meter for the highlights or towards the shadows ? I guess my question is to lean to overexpose or under to get such rich blacks and grays From a frustrated yorkshire man Cheers mate
Cheers. No I just used the Astrhori meter (reflective) that was in my pocket for an average. I was under exposing by 2 stops and over developed the film for a contrasty look. I'm experimenting with pushing film and various developers at the moment. So I'm pushing a lot of film. I have a video on pushing film not too long ago
It is great camera, but it also means that you will need to get an enlarger that can take the 6x9….. I opted not to take a 6x7 that offered to me as the negatives would not fit my 6x6 neg carrier on the durst 605.
Yes true. Luckily I have an Intrepid enlarger I can set up for these negs. Takes a bit of time and space in my darkroom but once it's set up I can whip out the prints.
Some great shots - the definition and separation is just so nice in those market shots. Looks like a hell of a camera - recall having my eye on this a few years back before the prices increased dramatically - should have bought one! May have to look - would suit the urban landscape project I’m pursuing here in Australia.

Take the weight off your neck - strap over left shoulder and under right arm. Even better with a Kood neoprene strap.
I have tried to shoulder carry cameras and can't get used to it and always end up back around the neck.

A great camera and a very generous present. I’ve had both the GW690 and GWS 690 and the lenses are as sharp as you could hope for. Ultimately I prefer the 6x7 format so got a GW670, but all are fantastic cameras. You are very lucky. Use it as a landscape camera.

If you want street photography try a Twin Lense Reflex (I have a Yashica Matt 124G which does have a light meter) hangs round your neck, waist level viewfinder, no mirror so no noise when you take a picture, and besides which no one really knows what you are looking at and only gets a little noisy when you wind on.

That's the little on. I have the original G690BL and it's even bigger and heavier. They shoot so nicely though.
FYI: These were designed for the Japanese tourist photographers that would snap a group shot of you and quickly develop back in the 60s. It was designed to be easy on purpose due to the specifications coming from the users and their use case (presumable doing contact prints from the 6x9 negative)
Your later GW690III is the refinement of that original design.

How did you find focusing the camera. Is the viewfinder patch easy enough to see?
Yes it's really easy to focus.
Yes the viewfinder is bright and big and also the guide lines inside move back and forward as you focus.

So. Much. Wrong. with this video. And why would you push film to a faster speed in bright desert sun? Crazy. So much faffing about in this video. You’re lucky you were in Bahrain. In Saudi Arabia you’d have been caned for taking photos of women on the street. One more tip: Perhaps before you make a video about a camera, do some research. So infuriating.
I've never understood blatant rudeness toward others. I don't see it often on my channel. If anything is 'wrong' usually good folk in the film community point it out for me, and others, to learn from without being hurtful and cruel.
Pushed or pulled was never mentioned in this video!!! Setting the camera to the closeted shutter speed the camera could for that fillum was!!

Sorry, but can't conceive of a camera worth up to £700 as a 'gift' At the very least, this should have been a shown as a 'paid promotion' Sadly, I'm going to have to unsubscribe, despite having followed the channel for several years now. Unfortunately, there have been too many 'gifts' of this nature recently. As the old saying goes. There ain't no such thing as a free lunch. 😟
