If you ever decide to do this again: If you put a fence one block in the ground and put water facing the fence behind it, then block it all off, it keeps you jumping. It's usually used to keep AFK people in an RP server from being kicked, but it should work to fix your inventory problem much easier (but I do really like your zombie system) :)

(alternate soulsand and magma block. the bubbles prevent drowning, just dont let the player stand on the magma block)
