      Oprema had a redundant architecture. It went so reliably, that it was decided to split it in 2 computers, to develop more of that cool Jena stuff. I love such stories.

      My flek 35mm f2.4 has truly wonderful colour and very nice rendering, producing arguably equal best looking jpegs with no post adj, from Sony A7R3, & that's better IMO than my Loxia too.

    • @Seele2015au
      @Seele2015au Год назад +3

      The 35/2.4 is optically unrelated to the 35/2.8: the 2.8 is a classic first-generation inverted telephoto, with a large negative element in front of what is ostensibly a complete, functional lens, significantly miniaturized. The 2.4 is a markedly modern design done with a clean sheet where a more integrated approach was taken.

    I have the zebra version (ser. 9350636). You’re spot on about the contrast and colours - my Flektogon 35/2.4 is a lot punchier. Like its later iteration, it’s in m42 mount. I also own the Carl Zeiss Distagon 35/2.8 and it’s a colour beast. Thanks for the Exacta mount tip - I have a Pancolar 50/2 and Sonnar 135/4 in that mount and my workaround was to depress the button to stop it down to my selected aperture while pressing the shutter button. Fiddly. Now I can turn the wheel and dispense with the juggling. I had no idea so I really appreciate it. 😊 As ever, thanks for the enjoyable and informative video.

    I’ve had one for ages when I started using Spotmatics and SVs and found that I could try out lenses of all sorts of focal lengths for pennies. At that stage M42 camera bodies and lenses were ignored and unloved and beautiful equipment was being practically given away. The Flektogons were cheap and cheerful and astonishingly good. I had great Takumar glass and dabbled with Yashinons and Sekors. £10 and £15 lenses turned in stellar performances. Just be fastidious about hoods and filter quality and the lenses kept giving. The pictorial qualities of the Aus Jena Carl Zeiss lenses are worthwhile. I like lenses that have fantastic tonality and have that 3D plasticity. CZJ and Takumar are great in their rendering. Tessars, Sonnars, Pancolars, Flektogons, good glass for pennies. Wonderful results!

    Love my Flektogons. Those Carl Zeiss Jena lenses really produce great photos. That close focus is just great. Surprisingly, as you focus closer it also adjusts the aperture to compensate for the increased exposure. I am not sure any other camera lens does that. I presently have the Exakta Zebra and semi auto aluminum finish versions. I also had a mint M42 Zebra but traded it last year for nice Busch Pressman Model 4x5 camera. I never used the M42 version and I really wanted to get into 4x5. Possibly, the camera store got the better of deal, but I only paid $40 for the lens "back in day" when people looked down their noses at Carl Zeiss Jena lenses. "Fake Zeiss lenses," they would sneer. I am an Exakta shooter anyway and I am thrilled with my Busch Pressman,. So everyone walked away happy. Another great lens is the Schneider Curtagon 35mm. I have one in Exakta Real mount and a regular Exakta mount with the attached light meter. Now that is cool.

    You are the only one describing how to use this lens in its Exakta version and I have subscribed to your channel right a way! Now, with the mirrorless cameras it does work this way when you push and turn that release button... But, with a DSLR it doesn't because you can simply not focus if doing that while the lens is stopped down, it's to dark! So, first focus with f2.8 and then press and turn and know what you are doing exposure wise. And, if there is not enough contrast or saturation, you can always create a separate picture control ( Nikon shooter speaking ) for that very lens👍🤩 Keep up the good work

  • @LyndonPatrickSmith
    @LyndonPatrickSmith 2 года назад +1

    I have a 1956 Exakta Varex and 7 lenses for it, including this 35mm 2.8 Flek. That “aperture lock” is also a shutter button extender as the old Exakta SLRs had the shutter on the left side front of the camera near the lens mount. They are total left-handler cameras: the film also loads from right to left. On my copy of the Flek there is a sliding lever at the bottom that holds the aperture wide open until the shutter is pressed, at which point it automatically stops down to whatever aperture is selected on the lens. This allows for easier focusing when mounted on an Exakta body. Of course this is bypassed when mounting it on modern cameras via an adapter, which is why the aperture appears to lock with that button.

    Finally, a nice review about the Flektogon from someone with a pedigree (and Vintage Lenses For Video)👏👏👏 I have a set of 20, 35, 50 & 80mm although the newer, faster versions and a 50&20 Zebras. I use them for stills and video as well. Generally, these sit on my GH5 and occasionally go on the original BMPCC and the 6K. Since I have this set, I basically stopped getting other vintage glass. I feel that these affordable lenses give me plenty of vintage character but also good enough sharpness that can occasionally shine in paid works too. Sure, the Contax, Leica, etc... lenses are more popular for a reason but they come at a very high price that sort of kills the charm of getting vintage glass.

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  2 года назад +1

      Totally depends what you use them for and what inspires. Leica for me because the 50 and 90 I have are made 100km’s from where I am. Want to go back to the factory for when I do those videos. Contax I’ve always loved but couldn’t justify until I was sold on using these old lenses. Now it’s just preference, my Takumars are fine, a few workarounds to get matching colour but still.

    The colours are exactly what I like - much more preferable than hard primary colours, I like a little desaturation. I suppose that it all depends what you propose to use this wonderful lens for. I use it for collating details of architecture and nature. The close-up and out of focus background with slightly washed-out colours are excellent for me. The same criteria pertinent for black and white. If you appreciate that 'art' can be painted in many different ways, then this lens is excellent. Additionally, you need to be on top of your game related to lighting values.

    @mikechudzinski6629 2 года назад

    It's great that you go into the histories of lenses. You pull together the background facts and how those facts relate to the lenses you are reviewing. I would go the the first version of the Flektogon 35mm, if I wanted to obtain a copy. But, recently, I went with the advice of a competing reviewer, whose handle starts with a Z and ends with graphy. I obtained the Olympus OM G.zuiko 35mm f/2.8, due to its sharpness, compared to the Flektogon 35mm f/2.4. Now that may approach an apple to orange comparison, as your review is of the earlier f/2.8, but the f/2.4 might be the better choice for many photographers, due to it's close minimum focus distance and MC. Me personally, I prefer vintage lenses that are single-coated and from the 60's, so I may, in the future, obtain the 35mm f/2.8..

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  2 года назад

      2.4 is newer and much improved based on this lens. In the end likely the better choice for sure, these are single coated and OLD, It's not the best 35 i've used, but it has a vibe for sure.

    Hey Mark, need your professional help. Finally made my mind up to a choice of 2 lenses lol. Nikon AI f2.8 (either 24mm or 28mm) or the Contax Zeiss Distagon T lenses (25mm or 28mm) really stuck on what to go for and looking for some of your amazing help.
    THEN! I saw your video on the Zeiss Flextagon 35mm and 20mm etc but with DDR MC and just DDR, but typically with an M42 mount, which could make converting to EF easier, and was curious if this should be an option I should put at the front.
    This lenses would be going on a bmpcc 6K g2 on S35 so have to consider the crop factor.
    Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks as always.

    So, I've toyed with the idea of picking one of these up, but after the Takumar 35mm f2.3 I just can't justify it. Though, I barely use the 2.3 and have been considering passing it on. How do you think the 2 compare? I do really like the idea of that MFD, but I'm unsure It will get much more use than the Takumar currently does overall. My 31mm limited seems to steal the show more often than not.

    You have multiple Zeiss' in Germany. In this case the Jena is the GDR (East Germany) part of Zeiss and "Oberkochen" is part of the FRG (West Germany). The town of Aalen where Oberkochen is, is full of Carl Zeiss. There are Carl Zeiss buildings throughout the town and many other former employees which started their own optics companies. Essentially, there's a Carl Zeiss in every part of that town. Some do manufacturing, some do assembly, some do finishing, some do R&D. Sadly I couldn't get too much insight because they were quite secretive. But needless to say is that, when you have such a company in your town, other industries will also thrive because there are short routes between them and each company has high engineering prowess. The town of Aalen is full of such companies, and not limited to Aalen. There are also a few international big companies around it, like Sumitomo, Varta, Henkel (Unilever). And that's in a radius of 20 miles around Oberkochen.
    And we're not talking like Stuttgart, or Munich where the car manufacturers are. But like, a small-ish and really unlikely towns to be packed full of history and technology.

    I have both the first generation in chrome and the third generation in zebra. Although the zebra can focus much closer, the chrome one is much better built and has more aperture blades. Most importantly the first generation is way sharper, reaching it's best performance at F5.6 compared to F8 on the zebra and is as sharp wide open as the zebra at F4. Moreover, it has much less chromatic aberration. The biggest downside is that the first generation flektogon with M42 (I don't know about other mounts) does not have a filter thread.

The 1st 35mm F2.8 CONTAX Zeiss Biogon Pre-WWII for the CONTAX I & II was back into it's day a real game changer, also the Zeiss Planar 50/1.5, which was being the fastest prime ever, at it's release - Leica simply had nothing competitive. I know the Zeiss/Contax, Yashica & Kyocera story very well, i love Zeiss, and i shoot with C/Y starting with my Yashica FX-3 Super 2000 into 1989, a year later via Contax 139Q, 137 MA, and i own other bodies from the Series, and the S2b. @@MarkHoltze

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  9 месяцев назад

      @marcp.1752 it’s not clickbait, I don’t use clickbait to channels views. If I wanted views I wouldn’t be making videos about vintage lenses I’m sorry I take issue with that accusation.
      I’m talking about this lens, not this lens Vs Contax Zeiss lenses, not this lens Vs FD’s or Leica’s. This lens has a reputation, that’s where the title comes from. If you have been shooting since 1990 I’m surprised this is how you’ve interpreted my video. You have your fav lenses, amazing. This video does not insult that choice. It’s just a video about a lens and not a video dismissing other lenses. The reputation it has isn’t made up by me, it exists on its own. There are lots of legendary lenses. If you take issue with “it started with this” you are misinterpreting the meaning of that line.
      Anyway I appreciate your feedback as I said, but it’s not click bait and no I’m not comparing it to the other lenses you mentioned.
      The pre war biogon was not an SLR lens, it had too big of a rear element to fit that format. The history portion of this video is making reference to the SLR format lens. Hence the mention of the Soviet lens as well.
      “…the solution to both problems was solved by two companies at almost the same time, independently from each other, on separate sides of what was then the Iron Curtain. These were the team of Harry Zöllner and Rudolf Solisch at VEB Carl Zeiss Jena in what was then East Germany, and Pierre Angénieux at his own company in Paris. By 1950 they had both applied for patents for 35mm wide-angle lenses for 35mm SLR cameras”

    I have to disagree that this lens isn't good for color. That it was created primarily for black and white photography. Since the 1930s lens manufacturers were creating lenses with color accuracy in mind. Any lens marked "anastigmat" is corrected to visible wavelengths of color. The low saturation and contrast you made note of was an aesthetic choice by European lens makers. A "color palette" if you will. Japanese manufacturers liked a much more saturated and bold color definition. Zeiss, both at Jena and Oberkochken plants peferred a more muted rendition of colors. I have the second version of this lens and you are correct about a lens hood being vital to reducing light flare.

Remove a high contrast light source from the frame and it's not an issue, but there's a lot of stop difference between the bright sun filled sky and the shadows. Remove the sun and it's not as flairy, I suspect it's single coatings or could just be my copy of the lens.
