      Left a general comment to give some feedback but wanted to chine in on Video Game Preservation.
      VGP is very important to me. Physical media is very important to me. Authenticity is everything.
      I love emulation and believe in its value. Streaming is a worthy option. BUT IT SHOULD BE AN OPTION NOT THE ONLY STANDARD!
      These types of services gate keep gaming around a monthly (or lifetime aka when the license expires or the servers die) subscription service.
      The service is only as good as your internet connection and the licenses on the company books. No authenticity other then they paid a suit some dollar.
      Don't mind ads really don't mind ads at all. But crap ads I kinda get bothered by.
      No disrespect intended. Just disappointment to vent.

      This service is for the casual players, not everyone can wrap their head around emulation so this is one of the options without fuss. It might not benefit preservation, but it might get more people to care for it and grow the community.

  • @gamesbloke
    @gamesbloke 7 месяцев назад +27

    Hey. I'm not gonna hammer this because SGR's community is making their opinions known in the comments. I agree wholeheartedly with all of them.
    To Dan/DJ Slope: Watch your video back. There are some clumsy slips of the tongue and a real howler where you talk about input lag then, after a pause of consideration, proclaim "there just isn't any". Your Elevator Action Returns Jetpack score was done three years ago apparently according to your placement on the leaderboards. Ouch...
    I respect your work, your style, your on screen presence. You deserve your place in RUclips stardom.
    Do ads. Do product placements. Do sponsorships. But don't try and 'connect' them with your community because they'll see right through you.
    Watch other sponsorship and ad vids. Some are shameless and some keep it professional and on point.
    As the commenters have stated they understand you've gotta provide for your family and your future. But... Well I hope this kinda thing isn't your future on RUclips.
    All the best and keep on keeping on. Sorry for being neggy but... You get the point...

    Retro games are small enough that they can be stored in a tiny amount of RAM. A system can be built where the games don't even get saved to any permanent storage. Running games locally has a huge latency advantage over encoding gameplay to video, transmitting that video, then decoding that video.

    I miss the days when you did actual gaming retrospectives.
    Antstream suffers from the same issue that other cloud gaming platforms like Xbox Cloud, OnLive, Gaikai, PlayStation Now, Google Stadia, GeForce Now and others do. Massive input latency, video/audio quality issues, disconnects and an overall experience that's vastly inferior to even playing on an inaccurate and buggy emulator. Not to mention that using a service that broadcasts a live HD video feed of an emulated 70's, 80's or 90's retro game where the actual rom is likely just kilobytes in size is incredibly wasteful.
    It reminds me of when NCSoft paid WoW streamers like Swifty and Quin69 to stream Lineage II Revolution, forgetting that the game was so boring, monotonous and dull that they immediately ditched it the moment the sponsor money ran dry.

However when I moved from my Desktop PC (with LAN internet) to my Mac Air, the games became basically unplayable, dropped inputs and the resolution would go from like 720p to 144p every 10 seconds. We see many devices coming out of China with hundreds/thousands of games that patently breach copyright protection that any reasonable person can see.
    When you look at the amount of games over the many systems that Antstream offers, despite the claims that they are licenced, it must be reasonable to ask whether all the legal requirement are in place.
    It may well be that some are/were always freeware but there are many titles in here that were definitely paid for content back in the day.
    So has Slopes seen documentation to prove the legitimacy of this service?
    The UK does have a reputation of rather harsh punishments for copyright violation, so it should be in the best interests of all to not only have legitimacy but to be able to see it. Signing up to a service that is not legally covered also makes customers accessories under the law.

      First, it's a steaming service, not a device. So this isn't some bootleg console from China. Think of it more like Netflix, Disney Plus, etc where you need to download the required app to run it.
      Technically a game would only be freeware if the IP License holder says so. I'm too lazy to check, but I don't think any Anstream games on the list are freeware, and all have a IP License Holder.
      Antstream are also a official registered business, where their HQ is in England. So this isn't some dodgy company.
      The whole point of this steaming service is to provide an easy to play retro games, while also paying the IP License Holders. I'm no expert on how this works, but I suspect they have to pay a yearly fee, and the people paying the subscription fees help pay them (the same way as any streaming service).
      Now if they were using games they don't own, don't you think the original IP License Holders would have made a fuss and had the service shut down? I'm very confident Anstream can easily prove they can use the required games (they have an e-mail address is you want to ask).

      @gamesbloke 7 месяцев назад +2

      @@RadioTailsBut how can you be so confident? No trolling. Serious question.
      If Antstream are playing the licensing game legit then there is a TON of curation and admin processes to keep on top of. Consider all the license agreements, contract lengths, entitlements, technical considerations. It's a legal minefield.
      UK law isn't as tight as it appears. Especially with entities like Companies House. Take a look at their own record keeping policies on their own website for confirmation of that.

      @@Garrrehal Much respect on sharing that. For me, on paper, the service makes sense for the right person. But I'm just not a fan of some of the claims made and it's definitely NOT lifetime.
      If it's marketed without the unrealistic claims I'd probably give it a shot myself because it's nice to dip into and out of some classics. The idea I can chuck my phone to my young boys and let them have a go on a racer is appealing.

    I can not understand with emulation available free, why would anyone pay? And you can get everyone of the arcade games. As for the ethics of piracy they are arcade Roms that are not really used anymore, so personally I don't see the harm I do still go to the arcade pay the £17 and play all day on the cabinets make a day of it. As for the home the £80 you pay thee is no guarantee the servers will stay up for a lifetime. If it's not viable then how they going to pay for the server time? Then you loose that's the problem with digital and streaming. You don't own you pay to rent. I've tried it and there is a lot of lag especially on fighting games and shooters where lag is very important when they get games like streetfighter 2, turbo ect.. it will be impossible

      @@shadednights6870 I don't think for your own use or the fact you own the game is Illigal. Profiting from it certainly is. It's a grey area as far as I am aware. Even so in the real world ROMs are so easily available anyone with a business head I. Their shoulders should realise this and an already closed community so that's a restriction in sales to start with, and the fact it's so easy to do it free and no one cares as it's for personal use. There is no money to be made and no money for growth.

    It's OK. This is a good way to try a game before you buy a physical copy. There's a value to having bug fixes, etc.but with ongoing lawsuits, retroactive censorship, etc. the physical copies (WHEN POSSIBLE) are my preferred just to preserve what originally was without compromise.

    • @gamesbloke
      @gamesbloke 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@ianfisch7289No.. But that's what happens nowadays when retro games are re-released.
      So many games have disclaimers saying the game doesn't reflect modern attitudes or they straight up censor or cut it out.
      By way of an example: Sega Mega Drive games on the Genesis/Mega Drive Collection from a few years back have artwork changes to reflect cultural changes in society. What the hell for? At least give an option to keep the original aesthetic. They didn't even give a disclaimer.
      Authenticity is key! And the preservation of the original experiences is key! These services dilute and compromise that with patches and supposed bug fixes.

    That lifetime subscription doesn't seem a very good money maker for a sustainable business long-term as the money will dry up pretty quickly when the limited customer base all have it and the company still have to pay for the bandwidth/servers and licences year on year. And whats the point of streaming the games with all the horrible lag and visual glitches when that lifetime fee should just let you have the rom locally? You have it for life according to them so why not?
    The entire thing has a whiff of scuminess about it and I doubt they will last long.
    Also, this video comes across like one of those infomercials on a shopping channel and definately stretching the truth in parts (no lag whatsoever? unless they broke the laws of physics thats a flat out lie).
    I like this channel but some of the videos he puts out are borderline deceitful and do his credibility no favours whatsoever.
