Are these your score out of 5?
The DR Moonbeams sounds so lovely! Such a full, rich sound. Will definitely be buying these next. Thanks for the helpful video!
Thank you for doing and showing this comparison. This takes so much time and was very helpful. Love the Moonbeam sound but I ended up on the Martin M600 since I can source them locally. They sound beautiful on both concert and soprano I have. Thanks again.
Worth BM sounds lovely! Thank you for your video!
I got a set of DR Moonbeams for my solid mahogany ukulele after your suggestion, and I love them! I would have never tried them if it wasn’t for you. Thank you! I also have tried the Worth Browns on my solid top spruce and Fremont Blacklines with a low G on my bamboo uke, and I really like those strings on those ukuleles. I tried the Ernie Ball blacks and really didn’t like them at all. Thank you for the string comparisons you have done and all the string info you’ve given out. It’s all a big help! Take care.
Thank you Alex the video.
Fremont black sound very Nice.
Thanks for the strings demo Alex....always worthwhile in my opinion! I love Worth Browns & Martin sets but was pleasantly surprised by the DR’s. Not at all keen on the Ernie Ball sets & 50/50 on the Freemont set. 👍
Those DR Moonbeams sounded fantastic. I will have to try those.
I love the DR Moonbeams followed by Martin M600.
First were the Martin's and second were the Moonbeams. Thanks very much, stay safe and well.🎸🎶🇬🇧
String demos are so helpful! Thank you for doing this. It always amazes me how strings can sound so different. I think the Martins had the most balanced sound. The Freemonts had a nice, sweetness. Ernie Ball clear had a nice brightness but were not my favorite. I didn't like the Ernie Ball black much at all. DR Moonbeams had a nice, almost whimsical sound. They make me think of Rebecca Sugar's songs.
Thanks for that demonstration. Ordering Moonbeams and Martin 600's!
I love your string reviews, they are always very helpful. I actually liked several of the sets tested. All things being equal I was not only surprised but impressed with the Ernie Ball. For me the Black strings seemed the right mix of brightness and warmth. I know that sounds impossible but what can I say? Thanks again, Wes
P. S. “Waving my hands around like a bad weatherman.” Too funny! 😂
I ended up putting a set of Fremont Black Line tenor with a low G and absolutely love them! I’ve discovered different strings can sound completely different on different ukuleles but on a solid mahogany tenor ukulele these sound amazing. Thanks again!
😉
Moonbeams sounds great! Thanks!
Moonbeams and the Martins were the best. Surprised at how lackluster the Ernie Balls were.
I love the Fremont Blackline especially when paired with their soloist squeekless low G. The Ernie Ball strings sounded feeble.
The Worth and Fremonts sounded warmer without losing any of the fluoro crispness. The Martins are right up there, though not as warm. (I've always loved the feel of them.) Thought the Ernie Balls were a bit thin. DRs were fine but didn't stand out for me. Thanks for the comparison!
I liked the worth too. They all sounded pretty good to be barring the Ernie balls.
Just fitted Fremont blacks to my Ohana Tk 85 with low G . Love the sound but they do take some settling in.
Regards Phil.
Fremont and Martin for me. Worth and DR are up there too... We are really debating fishing leader line quality here after all when talking about flouros.
I have been using the Fremont for over 10 years and have been happy. But I think I will try Martins back on my Martin C1K and use the Fremont Blacks on my Koaloha Concert.... The Martin being set up a bit more strummy and the Koaloha being more for clarity/arpeggios, intricate stuff. The unibrace in the Koaloha gives it a lot of mids and body and also makes the back resonate really well.
Thought the Ernie Ball strings sounded a bit tinny. Loved the volume and tone of the DR Moonbeams.
I thought the same.
Thankyou for this very informative video. Ones ear can play tricks but I liked the Fremont best however as you played each one I kept thinking it was best - a bit confusing In the end I would rely on the professional selling me the instrument which was best for it and my arthritic fingers
I just restring my concert with the Ernie's clear Nilon. I am kind of happy I did not use the blacks since I was looking for soft touch strings with volume. And they sounded nice but a bit tiny to my ear. Big difference between the clears and the blacks
jckasf I didn’t even realize there was a difference between the two. I got the clear ones from GC but they also had the black ones. I thought they were completely the same because there was nothing on the packaging between the two that said otherwise. o.O
How did you like the thickness of them?
@@raceface_m2579 the c string is quite thick. It makes difficult the stringing but for me it doesn't have an impact on playability. Someone else could think otherwise though.
A bit too thick for my liking.
my picks:
1- Ernie Ball Clear Nylon
2- Worths
3- Ernie Ball Black Nylon
4- Martin
Having listened again... the Moonbeams...
The moonbeams sounds really nice! I’ll have to get me a set! They just sound full. I have tried Fremont blacklines and Martin m600s on my vintage Martin. The Fremont sounds a bit thin- more trebly, but are very easy to play. The m600s are great strings and are very much more readily available than worth’s. Very close between the two.
I’ve tried the Ernie balls and they have a thicker gauge- really, really thick which scares me to leave on my old martin’s bridge. Can’t recommend them on vintage Ukes. Might just pull the bridge off or bow the neck
I have a Martin style 2 '27.
At this moment.
I think that the Martins sound a bit metallic compare to the Worth cm.
Whats youre opinion.
I wouldn't usually agree with that... But I haven't got your particular ukulele.
Worths, then Martins, then the moonbeams for me, though in a blind test I probably wouldn't know which are which, they all sound full and sweet. But it just occurred to me that if you ever feel like restringing a uke a dozen times in a row, please do so with a cheaper, more entry-level class instrument, like an Ortega or a Kala. I'd be curious if strings would make more or less of a difference then. (Because let's face it, your Koaloha is going to sound like heaven even if you strung it with shoelaces.)
I won't lie. I feel like the possibility of me ever wanting to restring a ukulele 10 times in quick succession are pretty slim. I agree though that this test on a cheaper Ukulele would make for valid reference.
@@SouthernUkuleleStore Is it solid wood or all laminate you're playing because that would make a difference wouldn't it; was it you who said this in another video?
Your string demos help me! Thanks! I’m looking for strings for arthritic hands. I just switched to DR Moonbeams as they are available locally. Another’s recommendation is Martin graphite for my concert ukulele, all solid Acacia. Can you tell me the difference between these two as to playability? Or which should I consider to try?
I would have recommended DR moonbeams which are about as light as it gets. The Martin's are on the thicker and higher tension side so I wouldn't bother with those. You've got the best string for the job there.
Worth Fremont Martin almost a 3 way tie but for different purposes. Makes me want 3 ukes.
Hi Alex! Thanx for your vids. I"m new to uke. Would it be possible to have low G martin m600s by buying 2 sets, and then using the C from the second set, putting it in the G string position and tuning it tuning it to low G? Hope I explained that right! Thank you. Watch all your stuff, very informative. Thanks again.
Unfortunately not. The notes C and G are quite different. You would need a string that Martin don't currently produce to do Low G on a sop/con.
You could try the Worth clear low G for the closest match.
I am looking for the thickest string and warm sound ukulele
If anyone ever asks me again what the difference is between nylon and fluorocarbon I will direct them here
Alex do you have the chords of this song that you play.
Thanks.
G, Gmaj7, G7, C, Cm, G, Em, D
What is the piece you're playing? So lovely...
What are the chords? Sounds really nice
Those Ernie Ball clears are extra zesty. Made my ears prick up and my head tilt like a dog. Looking to buy some.
Us too! Ernie ball forgot to send us some for the big launch. They will be with us in a week - some dealers may have them already.
How do you do that cool upper strum where you fold up your hand? Sounds great! Also tab for the song?
I quite literally play the strings as I curl up my hand. I'm sure you will get there.
No tab for this one I'm afraid
Thanks! Are you up strumming with just one finger why you do that? Chords in song? Nice Uke too! 😀
Were the Worth browns mic'd the same as the others? Seems totally different.
Yes. all levels stayed the same and mic position more or less.
So informative but Im new to the uke and I want to swap my strings but what tension??? For a concert kala
Your Kala will have come fitted with Aquila SuperNylgut 103u strings. If you want a like for like replacement that's all you need to know. If you want something different then any clear flurocarbon string designed for concert ukuleles will have a similar diameter and tension.
@@SouthernUkuleleStore thanks for helping me out! I dedinitly want to try the Worth Browns...so...light or medium would work?? Medium is just a thicker string If I remember correctly?
Medium is just that; mediums. Worth BL's are light tension.
Just get Worth BMs or CMs if you are a beginner... Everything else in the Worth range will likely create more questions than answers.
@@SouthernUkuleleStore awesome thanks...
The aquila on my uke are just too thick for my hands and plunky for my ear.
I’ve been checking out your videos, and they are great. However, all the uke playing sound seems it’s lacking volume and clarity. No to criticize, but a better mic would be a great addition. Thanks for the great info!
Thanks for the feedback.
those dr are pretty good! too bad its not available here
Where are you? We ship internationally.
What is that magical thing you are doing at 3:35? Amazing sound!
Up with the thumb brushing the nail then immediately down with a snap on the fingers.
@@SouthernUkuleleStore Thank you!!
Worths, then Martins, for me, too.
I’ll add the DR Moonbeams to my fave list, too.
DR moonbeams sounded sweet 😊 Martins sounded the most balanced sound though, but then im listening on my phones speakers 🤔 I am a great fan of martin m600s they just sound good.
What ukulele are you playing? It’s lovely.
A KoAloha from around 1998
@@SouthernUkuleleStore thank you!!
Hi Alex ,are Fremonts louder than Worth strings in your opinion???
Thanks
Completely depends on the uke the scale and the player
@@SouthernUkuleleStore i have a reproduction of the Martin Style 2 soprano 2016 made in Nazareth .
High tension fremonts would be the loudest of the two brands
Fremont and Martin.
Martins on my Martin :)
Can't go wrong
The Martin's sounded the best to me, which is surprising, because I only play Ernie Ball on my acoustic guitar.
Worth and Martin, although two completely different sounds
I rather like the DR moonbeams
Love the uke. What is it?
I do say towards the end of the video - it’s a KoAloha. A late 90’s one so they look very different nowadays.
I love the DR moonbeams too!
Must admit I had a look on the SU website for it. Beautiful.
Martin then Moonbeams
Also use the Newer Martin Premium Polygut strings in your next comparison.
Are Martin premium polygut strings better?
They are just repackaged Aquila Carbon Blacks. They are fine but the normal Martin Flurocarbon strings are leagues ahead.
The 600's are better right for the concert?and are they in high g? I am sorry for asking you so many questions.i am from india.and due to lock down there are not many options available.i was previously very interested in the Aquila lava or super nylgut. What do you think I should go for? I have a kala ka ce.i highly appreciate your reply.thank you very much
Give the Martin M600's a try first. They are High G.
Thank you very much !!!! :) Martin it is
Is that a naturally left handed ukulele or did you restring a right handed ukulele?
Righty set up left handed
Southern Ukulele Store Did you modify the nut or saddle or did you just restring it?
Modified the nut and bridge saddle
The Ernie Ball black and the DR seemed to suit the dreamy nature of the piece the best. I'm stuck between EB black and clear, though. That bright sound of the clears sounds very iconic for the ukulele, but the softer tone of the blacks just makes me melt and suits most of the stuff I like to play when I'm stoned and just fiddling around.
I have EB black and they are really good. Better then these nylgut shit (god know's how old ) they put on my ukulele from factory.
The difference is huge. I still have the Martin 600 at home, but I haven't tried them yet.
None of these strings are available in india 🥺
Sorry to hear that. If you email me at alex@ukulele.co.uk I can probably work out a shipping quote.
Can you make a tutorial how to play the tunes in this vedio. Thanks
G, Gmaj7, G7, C, Cm, G, Em, D7
There isn't much too it 👍
No contest Martin strings
Worth BM for me...because they're warm, brown and called BM.
The Worths sound terrible in this excerpt. Fremont is the best! Followed by Moonbeams, followed by clear nylons. Listen I’m headphones.
Any of them except the Ernie balls those sounded horrible which is why I stopped using them a long time ago
josh smith thats all i use on my acoustic guitas, Yamaha and HD28 Martin, ernie ball are great.
Worth BM is just about the worst name for a string 😂
confused dot com.
