I test drove both today…and they are both incredible. At first was totally set on M2, but the M240i is also soo good but cheaper and more ‘chill’ when you just want to drive normally. The M2 is just crazy (in a great way). Good dilemma to have 😃 So we’ll see!

I never test drove the M2 since it was a little out of my price range with the options I would want on a daily driver, but my M240 is fantastic. I do a lot of highway driving and it is extremely comfortable and definitely an upgrade from the previous generation being that it is on the 4 series platform.

Missed the manual at first but then I stopped caring about it quickly. Also closer to 40 than 20 years old now lol, it's not as important plus traffic in New York is worse than ever. My interest rate sucks with 235i and I was looking at trading in to get the 2025 M2 which I rented in California and loved every second in, but the wintertime RWD consideration is a great point. M2 is a fail. It's the only M car that you can't get in AWD (XDrive). It's the main reason I didn't get one over here in the midwest. Same engine. 240i is faster 0-60. Slower in the 1/4. This changes if you tune the engine to match the M2 to match it. M2 is highly disappointing.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed

The M2 is not the same engine as the M240. M2 has the S58 which is twin turbo. The M240 has the B58 which is single. With downpipe and tuning the M2 can make 700 WHP while the M240 will be at 500 WHP with the same mods. Very different cars overall

Interesting. First time I've seen your channel. I was wondering how you had enough pull to get BMWNA press cars, then saw your sub numbers. I guess car enthusiasts are fond of your content, which initially strikes me as bizarre considering how little I learned from this video despite not following the brand actively these days. I do know the B58 motor is underrated, and has a ton of performance headroom for mods. I'm sure options for the S58 are becoming more available, but common sense says that particular engine will take more mods and money and return less in the way of gains given the factory boost levels.
Stock versus stock there's almost no difference in a straight line between the manual M2 and 240 xDrive. All-wheel drive gets rid of the traction limitation, and the gearing on the ZF automatic is far more aggressive. To say nothing about how fast it pops off shifts.
It's regrettable that BMW never made a really good feeling manual gearbox after the 5-speed boxes in the E36 M3 and other BMW models of that era. Those gear boxes shifted beautifully, always sharp and precise with perfect, linear clutch take up when being driven in town at a leisurely pace.
To this day I miss my '95 Daytona Violet over Dove Gray M3 coupe. One of the best cars I've ever owned, bought it from a Piedmont Airlines / USAir pilot with 30K miles right as he was taking delivery of his E46 variant. If you want a used car that's indistinguishable from new, find one being sold by an airline pilot. Those guys love their machinery and spare no expense nor effort on it. First year car, right before they switched to OBD2 and the larger but lower revving engine the following model year.
It's regrettable, but only makes sense that the 6-speed in the M2 has the same old rubbery, imprecise feel as all BMW manuals from the past two decades. The Supra apparently solved that issue, but is assembled by Magna Steyr in Austria, along with the Z4 with which it shares it's powertrain and underpinnings. Perhaps owners can share whether deleting the CDV valve helps the overall feel of the M2 transmission. And of course, I'd be curious to know if "Rev hang" remains an issue with the manual.
You could sit in the back without smacking your head, that's great. Might be worth sharing how tall you are. For someone who is 6'3" as I am, no one is sitting behind me In any level of comfort other than a smaller child in most cases.
Basically these are two place cars with room for a 3rd sitting sideways in a pinch, and space to toss a gym bag or briefcase in the back. Nothing different than my 17-year-old 135i. If your lifestyle allows for that, fantastic, otherwise, make sure you or your spouse or sig other has something with more space, or be prepared to work out another solution if major life changes dictate you do so.
The main reason to buy the M2 is the manual transmission. Or if you intend to track the car, of course. 97% of owners will of course never do that, and the ones that can afford to do so likely have money to buy something that has better steering feel and is assembled somewhere other than Mexico. AFAIK the BMW factory there still has a very unknown track record for quality over anything but the very near term.
Neither of these cars does a whole lot for me. I just like the old ones with the hydraulic steering rack that handle almost telepathically, and have less in the way of gizmos to fail over the long-term. These kinds of things matter, of course, when you have a car brand that amazingly (And brilliantly) found a way to monetize its own unreliability with CPO cars and warranties.
Just the fact that Hendrick has these cars on the lot, even in small quantities speaks volumes given how few manual transmission alternatives are available. Similarly, coupes in general have been dying a not so slow death.
Seeing these cars are available for very short test drives, try them both, buy whichever one makes sense. And hopefully makes you smile.
I'll have to consult the BMW website for concrete info on base pricing and equipment, the fairly small price delta here doesn't say much given how much BMW charges for options.
And if you're in the market, don't bother with Hendrick BMW. You won't get competitive pricing nor lease or financing terms from a monopoly dealer in the 14th largest city in the country that's now more populous than San Francisco. Call on a dealer in the Atlanta market, or even the DC/ Baltimore metros where there is plenty of competition. Or a small dealer in a cold Northern climate during the winter that has inventory piled up on the lot, since people generally don't buy coupes or convertibles in the dead of winter given a choice. Now IS a good time to lease a BMW from the previous model year, since December is a down month for car sales historically, and there is still factory lease support and rebates available for slower selling models. Unfortunately m cars seldom have good lease terms, although it has happened so it's always worth at least looking up the December residuals and money factors just in case.
I'll have to check out your other content. Do you have credentials as a competitive driver, or written reviewer beyond what's evident on this channel? Just curious, at the end of the day people liking your content is ultimately all it takes. I will assume parking lot test drives are not your norm.
I'm guessing SaabKyle's departure freed up some room for others to establish car review channels. Certainly can't fault that guy, retail pharmacists start with a six-figure income and work 38ish hours a week or less. Not too many other careers that allow for that combination.
Apologies for any typos, Android's text to speech continues to worsen with every new version despite all of this A.I. hype. Bizarre...
Cheers and good hunting all. 🍺
