So Conservapedia is bonkers, but funnily enough, the parts about the Star Wars Original Trilogy being anti-Vietnam War and the celebration scene being based on Triumph of the Will are probably the most accurate things on that site. George Lucas has confirmed both of those things himself.
At least the Vietnam part was a good thing... but that last bit is creepy [assuming it is so]
@@artificialgravitas8954 Well, Triumph of the Will is still studied in film classes for its cinematography, and the impact that propaganda has on film technique is a wider discussion in film. Lucas was born in 44, and said that when he was growing up studying film, Leni Riefenstahl's work had the most stunning cinematography he'd ever seen, despite its propaganda content. So he copied a lot of the Riefenstahl's framing when he was trying to get the same impact - many scenes featuring the Empire and Vader are directly lifted from scenes in Riefenstahl's Nazi propaganda films. I think the rebels getting the celebration scene instead was supposed to be an ironic subversion, or maybe he just liked the scene so much he stole its framing anyway.
@@brettd2308 Yeah I was disappointed in that sequence of this video. Those other films that are shown which are also similar to TOTW are also cribbing from it, though probably less directly. It's like saying that a movie reference to the Psycho shower scene isn't actually a reference to that, and showing other references to the same scene as evidence. Anyone who has studied film like Lucas has knows that shot backwards and forwards and is not coincidentally making something similar. It doesn't have to be pure coincidence for Conservapedia's moral panic to be ridiculous.
@@artificialgravitas8954 Lucas was a film student. If you've ever been in a film class, you study propaganda, and whether or not you like it, Triumph was one of, if not the most successful propaganda films of all time, made on a limited budget for a sole purpose, which it achieved. Lucas and many other directors have often based works on insidious, dastardly films and pieces, because it's what they studied. Nobody analyzes the content of Triumph, just the cinematography, use of props, framing and editing.
Is that really a bad thing though?? Conservatives act like showing both sides of a war is terrible.
Black Panther on the greatest conservative movies list....I'm....WAT?
From their entry...
" The Black Panther recognizes both the importance of helping those in need, as well as not going beyond one's governmental authority. Though there are plenty of pagan religious references, the film appeals in some ways to a general sense of Christian morality and governmental justice, and it never diverts into political correctness about black supremacism."
@@dylandubeau Ya know, most of the site I'm sure is 100% "This is what these people actually believe" but that one entry I desperately want to be trolling.

Yeah, the empire always seemed to be based on the Nazis.
The creators even admitted that it was based on the third reich
Not only is the Empire heavily influenced by Nazis, but the entire movie series was a condemnation of the Vietnam war.
Try to explain that to conservative fans of Star wars; that yes the Empire are Nazis, but the Empire is also the American military industrial complex. Then watch the brain meltdown.
I think Lucas was just inspired by nazi propaganda filming techniques in general.

About the Star Wars part.
The entire original trilogy IS anti-Vietnam war though. George intended the original Star Wars as a kind of loose sequel to Apocalypse Now (which he wrote) in which the US becomes even more imperialistic as time progresses.

They did actually model that scene after Triumph of the Will, though it wasn't an endorsement of the original but a critique of Riefenstahl. Lindsay Ellis has an amazing video about this, I think it's called something about the Ideology of Star Wars.
Can't deny that Riefenstahl was a good film maker. Too bad she furthered the nazi cause with her work, but her visuals were undeniably influencial on the industry. As long as the purpuse of a movie is not fascist propaganda I don't see the problem with taking a leaf out of her book. Triumph of the will is a visually impressive part of movie history and can be viewed as such.
It was made sincerely and I expect a lot of the people who post stuff on there are sincere. But Im pretty sure some of it (Especially the article talking about you) was satire. This is a huge problem with stuff like this as people can say such insane and hatefull things and if they are called out on it, they can just say "Its satire. Its all a joke" while they really do mean it.
Ive seen this happen a lot with the alt right. It starts with posting Pepe memes and joking about Kekistan. But slowly it becomes more serious. I had a friend who went down this exact path, who started with memes and jokes, and is now watching RUclipsrs who talk about cultural marxism and white genocide.

Oh. 🙄😒
About the entire ceremony scene, while there certainly is an overtly political message to triumph of the will, from what i know about that movie, it was pretty impressive from a cinematic point of view, at least at the time. The ewoks being based off of the vietcong is not too surprising, afterall, there are only so many ways you can do guerillia warfare, and Vietnam is probably the best known example of that to this day, even more so back then when it was still in public memory. Besides, if theyre gonna mention the similarities between the ceremonies in triumph of the will vs a new hope, i feel they should also bring up the death star run compared to the dam attack in Dam Busters, depicting a british bombing raid against a german dam.
To my knowledge, the reason Leni Riefenstahl got hired to direct Triumph Of The Will is that she was more or less the most famous and critically acclaimed movie director in Germany at the time. She'd made a documentary about the 1936 Olympics that was a major success, and she was known to filmmaking circles as a major groundbreaking innovator in cinematography.
Like, Hitler's instructions to Goebbels were along the lines of "I want this movie about me to be the greatest fucking movie ever made, so go get me the best damn movie director in the whole country to direct it."
(For example, I've had people who would probably know whether this is true or not tell me that she was the original inventor of "slow-motion" filming, which doesn't seem an impressive innovation now but obviously would have been very noteworthy the first time you saw it if it had never been used in a movie before.)
So she was a very talented filmmaker, and that means there's a lot of very good cinematography on display in Triumph Of The Will just as there's a lot of impressive cinematography on display in every movie she ever made.
I'm not a movie-history nerd (I mostly know this stuff because I'm a WWII-history nerd), but the movie-history nerds I've known have said some pretty similar things about the movie Birth Of A Nation--which was also apparently quite an impressive achievement in terms of technical cinematography when it was made, despite the fact that it's a propaganda film for the Ku Klux Klan, like Triumph Of The Will was an impressive achievement in terms of technical cinematography despite also being a propaganda film for the National Socialist German Workers' Party.
Riefenstahl obviously got a whole lot of criticism after the war for her willingness to be involved in the whole thing, with her not entirely convincing response to the controversy being a claim that she herself "saw the film only as a documentary" and "just couldn't pass up the opportunity to film an important event in world history" (this argument isn't helped by the fact that several parts of the movie include footage that was obviously scripted and staged and not real footage taken at the event itself).
But yeah, it's basically the kind of movie you'd get if somebody like Kim Jong-Un or Saddam Hussein hired Stanley Kubrick to make a movie about himself. The entire movie's contents would just be rank propaganda glorifying an evil dictator, but there would definitely be a lot of cool-looking shots in it.
In highschool I was part of a mentorship program for ASD youth and noticed that my mentee/friend had very recently gone from being politically inactive/neutral to becoming very hard right. I talked with him calmly and rationally to try and figure out why because his newly found extreme views were starting to affect his social life. It turns out that while he had leaned conservative most of his life because of his upbringing he had been reading conservapedia literally and taking it as equal fact to other more established websites. I am in college now and just found out he was accepted to the same college and am very proud of him but am worried that how views have not leveled themselves out in the year I have been gone and am worried to how he will be received. If anyone has any advice on how to proceed I would greatly appreciate it.
Yeah, I also have ASD/Aspergers and after I read article such as from Conservapedia I can't stop thinking about that, because I often firstly believe in informations that I am reading or hearing and I am reacting impulsively. Also, I feel the need to adapt to some view points and I not know what is right, because I am not very decisive. Even with my knowlegde and experience, that negates that 'facts' from the site, it takes me some time to realise that.
So, the best option for me is closing the tab after a 'quick' check-up of the content.

This is probably one of the best things I’ve seen this year, I was dying at the starwars/nazi scene 😂 Been here since the start and you keep getting better!
Aw man, that kid talking about adding stuff about creationism to the Wikipedia page for evolution sounds like she's had way too much sugar
I'd say it's too much religion.
Okay, thanks to conservapedia now I understand how those angry gamergate guys came into being 🤣
@@Mrwhale99 "Ethics in journalism." What a laughable time that was.
plasticiconoclastic yeah, do you remember when Zoe Quinn harassed and doxxed women developers? haha but yes let's laugh at the "other side" because they were clearly wrong haha...
Research both sides, both sides have their nutcases but to deny that game journalism isn't corrupt is laughable...
Conservapedia and GamerGate literally, as in literally literally, has nothing to do with each other.
It's in no way related. No prominent Gamergate figure, or even any real percentage of Gamergate People take Conservapedia serious.
In fact, almost no Conservative does in general. Unless you can prove it otherwise, other than wanting to believe they do.
Is there a plan to add captions? I like sharing videos with my hard-of-hearing friend.
I love the use of a screen-cap of scrolling through "face palm" on Giffy as the background for a couple of those segments. :D
Baking as a woman's activity is about as arbitrary gendered as a thing can get. Like what about baked goods is inherently feminine?
It falls in that broad category of genderless things that people weirdly think are gendered, like when Vanity Fair snarked at Clinton and told her to take up knitting and people complained that it was sexist. But in the same sentence they recommended "improv comedy" as a possible hobby, which is ironic because comedy is one of the laundry list of bizarre things that sexists have historically said women couldn't do well, along with cooking, or advertising (Mad Men), or having any kind of job at all. 🙄
Conservapedia:
Wikipedia, when it doesn't match with your reality.
I just recently stumbled onto your channel, and this video in particular caught my attention. I had no idea this site existed, but thanks for giving your take on it. I looked into it myself and it looks like one of the biggest loony bins on the web.
your videos are super well produced, keep it up : )
I've seen this before in a chirstian website for reviewing movies where one of there big values is capitalism
It turns out that Manon is the second god of these 'Biblical sites'
Ooops!
Conservapedia is extremely fascist tbh. It's actually pretty scary sometimes.
I'm a neo-fascist and I think they're fucking bonkers
Since libtards are the ones who edit it because they have nothing better to do than be wiki vandals does that make liberals fascist.
Well the word "Globalist" is a dog whistle for Jews after all.
Silly? Yes. Fascist? Please don't use words who's meanings you don't understand.
badboje not really sure how else to describe an authoritarian ideology that places huge emphasis on tradition, fear mongers about minorities, thinks war is always good, and looks at starship troopers and Dredd as ideal societies.
Whats the background song called again? around 4:00
Poe's law in extreme.
From all I can gather, the website started off genuine. But I'd guess that there can't be enough people dumb and tech-savvy enough to compile a website of its size. I'd guess many of the editors are just trolls who're playing along for the laughs. However, much like 4Chan, the lines between trolling and sincerity are blurred. Editing on this website for long enough must cause the propaganda to get to your head.
I agree that some of those majors listed are not good in terms of getting a job since a college education is not required to get a job in the fields. Also, just job outlook is horrible for some of those, but many of those majors were good majors
I agree. But to list puppetry next to criminal justice or pre law is laughable.
There definitely is a trend, good or bad, of everyone needing to go to college, even for things that don't really need college. But that's not what this list is. Otherwise economics wouldn't be in it.
I don‘t think you can objectively say a major is „good“ or „bad“. Sure, a major in philosophy or ethics may not land you a job and a engineering one might. But is wealth accumulation really what we want to judge them upon? Is their knowledge not just as valuable, if not more, to society? Philosophy for example is the base for science, and I think we can agree that people like Plato or Kant brought society forward by big margins.
@@gnupfo You brought up some interesting points. One cannot say a major is objectively "good", or "bad" since it depends on why they are getting that major in the first place. If someone is getting a major in the hopes of getting a well paying job, then one might rank one major over the other. However, if the main reason for going to college is for the sake of knowledge, then it can change the hierarchy.
Why haven’t I found your channel before? You’re awesome.
I completely agree about the site's problem with sources. On the main page, off to the side, is a list of headlines. One day I saw a headline about a story that, I guess, "proves" creationism. The headline included three links. I checked out each link, and found three websites that reposted the EXACT SAME article. There was no attempt to clarify or add to the information of the article, just cut and paste. But, if you don't examine the links, it just seems there is a lot of evidence to backup a claim. I think they've used the same trick on multiple occasions, but I am not sure. It has blessedly been a long time since I visited this "encyclopedia".
A lot of people are _extremely_ lazy and don't know the meaning of research; they'll just assume that the site that feeds into their cognitive biases has already vetted those "sources," and even if they didn't, they don't give a fuck. I generally don't write people off, and there's no kind way of putting it, but these people are just fucking dumb and depressingly ignorant. I don't like the internet meme culture much, but "brainlet" is one that comes to mind when thinking of the sorts of people that Conservapedia caters and panders to. What more can you say about people who will conceive of conspiracy narratives to explain away why they're too drowning-on-drool fucktarded to edit an article on Wikipedia?
plasticiconoclastic True. I don't want to write off people either, but anyone who thinks Conservapedia is a viable, accurate source of information is terrifyingly stupid. Wikipedia has issues to be sure, but at least there's some sense that they strive for accuracy.
im conservative but this website is wild none the less
Its real. Why do people just flat out not take terrible people at their word?
@@relo999 you are going to have a rude awakening when you realize that people use that line of thought to hide their intentions
@@relo999 I mean its not like this isn't a pattern that people observe in reality over and over again. Why are you getting so defensive though?

Don't argue with Relo. He's projecting his BS. Who says what he said? Clearly he is the one who wants to hate without consequences.
@@lordblazer It's as if Relo's oblivious to the fact that people use _"It''s just a joke/It's just satire!"_ as an excuse for a lot of fucked up behavior.
Though I will say that, in the age of Poe's law, it's very difficult to discern sincerity from satire; that, sometimes, the line between a joke and earnest conviction is blurred. There will be people who sincerely believe a Poe to be genuine, and some of those people won't be the types that are disagreeing with them in the comment section or a reply video, but will be those that are nodding in full-on assent.
Triumph of the Will was actually a very important milestone in the history of cinema. Film makers are still using some of the camera techniques from it!
I mean, the site's founder is the son of Phyllis Schlafly, so that should've told you everything going into this
Oh yeah Wiki pedia has a lot of liberal and atheist biases , so lets make our own wiki with our own biases, we win
Christian Science - Oxymoron
Not really. Lots of great scientists were devout Christians.
@Hmm Tg7o Many scientists actually pursued sciences because of their religion, so while it is true they didn't necessarily use religious methods in science they did do it because of religion.
@@badboje6040 Christian science is still an oxymoron because Christianity is a religion and isn't something you can study with the scientific method. It's impossible to test most of the claims made by Christianity so it can never be scientific. Those Christian scientists you cite understood this.
ruzzell907 yes, let's ignore that the fathers of modern science were mostly Christian... You know, Francis Bacon, Copernicus, Antoine Lavoisier, Gregor Mendel...
hedgehog3180 the modern scientific method was refined by Francis Bacon, a Christian in an attempt to understand the universe to get closer to God though...

Ivan The Mary Sue is as reputable of a source as the Bible; I rest my case.
Wikipedia is only liberal and progressist when you don't know shite about the world. There are liberal articles on wiki, there is just as much content about conservatives, it's just informational though for both categories, like the history of each movement and such. To be fair though, this is far, far from representative of the majority of conservatives, especially with the shift in politics that is happening in most of the western world right now. I am left-centrist but I find myself forced to drift to the right to start finding more libertarian values, which I am. Doesn't change the fact I am an Athetist and I fact check crazy claims. =)
Conservapedia is religious conservatism, not mainstream conservatism. Conservapedia is for people who patch holes in their understanding of the world with fairies and men that shoot thunderbolts from their hands. =)
There is just this thing called the internet that allows you to spread your idea to multiple hundred million people - if you're dense, you're bound to find people who are just as dense as you, whereas before internet, in the small communities we lived in, maintaining stuff like "flat earth" would be impossible.
And sadly, some of it might be satire, but many, many people believe that homosexuality is a disease and a sin in the real world, for example. There's so many examples of preachers saying that right here on youtube.
