    I have these on my Jeep. It is very flaky. This video made a few things clear. I hope you make a video where you test the electronics (controller, motor) and show the voltages required for proper operation.

    Thanks for your video. I've had mine for a year and a half, and the driver side started getting stuck halfway up today. I loosened the steps thinking it was binding, but it wasn't. So I pulled the motor/gearbox assembly off and tried it, and the motor seemed to run through a full cycle just fine, and the steps seemed to go all the way up and down fine. I put the motor back on and everything is working again. I'm not sure what was causing it to get stuck

      Hey. Thanks for the comment. It’s the limiter circuit in the brain. Once it senses any resistance at all, it stops. I finally pulled my boards off completely and replaced them with good old stationary boards. I guess it’s cool that the little LED lights illuminate my stationary boards. I went through so much and tried so many different things, including shimming they hinges, like I show in this video. I’M DONE. hope yours keeps working. Mine didn’t. Take care.

      Phil Freeman here we go I just found out today one side didn’t go up all the way . It went up 70% but not all the way so should I follow this video to fix it?
      Thanks

    • @tubal4450
      @tubal4450 4 года назад +1

      @@june1909 I pulled the motor off and let it run through a few cycles without the step connected and i couldn't see anything wrong. With the motor detached the step also moved freely. When I put it back together it worked again and has been working ever since. I'm not sure what the problem was. Maybe the gear was just getting bound on something. I had to break the little clips that attach the plastic motor cover, and I used zip ties to re-attach it (like in the video). So if you do pull your motor off, just make sure you have some zip ties or something to reattach the motor cover.

      Have a 2014 Jeep JK installed these in 2018. fast forward...always a problem sticking up or down. they always need a boost to get them up. I have taken them off multiple times just like the video. Also took them to 2 certified installers in Houston. They want to replace the motors etc. Last visit they called AMPs for replacement parts and were told to just spend another $1800 for new ones It would be cheaper. lol I highly do nopt recommend these at all unless you just gargae or have a show vehicle. Biggest pain in my ARSH. Cleaned a dozen times watched every video used every cleaner and any slightest flea pressure of resistance they freeze. Nothing wrong with motor just poor design at a REAL high cost. If you have them good luck if you own a JEEP STAY AWAY! Merry Christmas kolt 123 Houston TX

      I fought that same problem for months. I finally decided to remove the boards and swap them out for old fashioned NON movable boards. One nice thing is the little LED lights still illuminate two spots on the old fashioned boards. Good luck with yours.

    My AMP Powersteps were put on in 2008. I have disassembled the gear box and lubricate it annually. It is now 2021 and for some reason, they will only work when the truck is running. If you turn the truck off before you open the door, they won't deploy. I am still trying to figure out what is wrong.

    • @TheBartmobile
      @TheBartmobile  3 года назад

      That sounds like an electrical problem. Have you made any electrical changes or installed any other aftermarket parts to the truck lately? I would’ve said your idler and motor linkage/hinges may have been binding slightly, and that can create just enough resistance in the motor for the sensor to kick in and block it from operating, but the fact that you said it works fine with the engine running discounts that idea. It sucks that this awesome set of power steps seems to have a limited lifespan. I actually already completely removed mine and installed old fashioned stationary running boards/steps. I couldn’t take it anymore! Lol. Good luck to you.

    • @cjordannd
      @cjordannd 3 года назад

      Could possibly be the additional voltage (14 volts) to the battery/motor while running giving it the extra power. Also meaning that there is a binding problem still. You might try it with a good battery charger connected to the battery and see if it will work without the engine running. This could also confirm it being mechanical not electrical. Just sumpin to try. Oh and BTW good find on the misalignment BB.

    • @rksmith5273
      @rksmith5273 3 года назад

      @@cjordannd If your indicating that the system runs off a separate battery other then the vehicle, I am not aware of this and that could be the issue; however, the connection runs to my two 12v batteries I have in the truck. They sometimes deploy as I am driving and sometimes when the truck isn’t even running and at both times, the doors are never opened. I am no engineer nor am I a mechanic. Thank you for your post and if I ever figure this out, perhaps I’ll be smart enough to record the steps that enable success.

    • @cjordannd
      @cjordannd 3 года назад

      @@rksmith5273 Most alternators supply 14 volts to the battery. That extra boost could give the drive motor what it needs to overcome the binding. However your latest comment leads me to beleive that Black Bart is correct in saying it is electrical. Being that it is intermittent leads me to blame the controller. This is the only way to get a signal to the motor. If your cabin lights are not cycling along with the running board operation it indicates a feed power short in the controller. Just a fairly decent guess and the exact problem I had and fixed. Hope this helps.

      Some other people have commented here that the older brain doesn’t have the right tolerances needed to move the steps when resistance is sensed. I can’t comment on that. I’ve replaced these power steps with stationary steps. Good luck with yours. …and yes…. It was a pain to film all of this while trying to fix it. Lol. Thanks for watching.

      Be sure to call before ordering any parts. Their techs are great and they will help you buy only what you need. If you just need the motor, they may be able to tell you how to order just the motor. Can I ask... if you removed the motor and gear box, did you test the range of motion on your linkages? Did everything fall down freely after you pushed it up by hand and let it drop?

    I have been watching videos and reading in preparation to my install. It seems people are having issues with corrosion of the motor connection. Is there a seal between the linkage, motor, and cover? If not do you think one could be added or a gasket maker be used?

    • @TheBartmobile
      @TheBartmobile  2 года назад +1

      I can’t say for sure that a seal would help. In my opinion, the design flaw is that the “brain” is too sensitive to any resistance. Resistance comes with the slight misalignment of the hinges. They did release a newer model that has a long strip that mounts under the vehicle. That strip contains the locked in hinges and running boards. I can’t remember what they call it. …XL, maybe? Anyway, that newer model seems like their attempt to solve the misalignment problems that come with the first generation. Or, they need to modify the tolerances in the brain so it can fully operate the motor unless the resistance is equal to the weight of a person’s leg/foot.
