- Thanks for watching this quick week eight post laminectomy update video. The surgeon stated that I have no more restrictions and that I can go about my normally daily routines, which means more physical activity - primarily bike riding.
Since the last video update, I am feeling really good. Lower back pain and stiffness is still there but not a hinderance like it had been. My flexibility in my lower back and hips has greatly improved.
I got the okay to start riding outside, and I had participated in the Tour De Cure on May 5, 2024. I have been able to ride 4-5 days a week in preparation of some upcoming events this summer such as Unbound Gravel, Seattle to Portland (STP) and Ride from Seattle to Vancouver, BC and Party (RSVP).
Additionally, I was told I can go back to Jiu Jitsu which I am looking forward to

Just a quick update regarding my recovery from a L3, L4, & L5 laminectomy.
Eight weeks post op and my surgeon has cleared me and I am able to do my favorite activities - bike riding and jiu jitsu!
Also, thanks to everyone who's been watching and commenting! Its been great getting some good feedback on the previous videos I have posted regarding the laminectomy procedure.
Are you dealing with stenosis? Will you be having a laminectomy to help with any lower back pain or tingling in your legs? Looking for info on how other are dealing with recovery? Let me know in the comments :)
Great you are feeling better and getting back to normal lifestyle. I’m on my 8th week after having laminectomy on L4 and L5 and feeling better. Lower back is still alittle sore. Last night I drove from Phoenix to Ontario California and felt much better. Before when driving I would feel the pulled nerve down my leg as I step the accelerator. There ls days where I feel as if I still had the sciatic nerve hurting and I get alittle discouraged but it’s definitely feeling better. I was meant to go back to work June 3 but due to my nature of work I decided to ask for another 4 week extension. That was stressing me out but after getting the approval I felt much better. I’m a diesel mechanic. I do physical therapy and been going to the gym, that has helped. I have a free weight set at home but with the machinery at the gym you have more control as to what your body is able to do. I’m also seeing a chiropractor that only does my upper back and pulls my legs but no twist. I’m still very careful when lifting. We expect to be pain free within days or weeks but I have to realize I been dealing with this pain for 20 years so it takes time for the nerve to recover. As I’m writing this I’m laying in a hotel bed with absolutely no pain. So for those of you doing this procedure, be patient and follow the restrictions. Not only does this procedure helps with the pain but it decompresses the nerve from sending signals to other parts of your body. You’ll be surprised what else it cures that’s been bothering you. Thank you for sharing your story with us. I had very many doubts about doing this procedure. I was so used to do pain that I felt I could live with this for the rest of my life. But at 49 what would I had expect at a later age, cane or a walker?? I honestly almost chickened out at the operating room but by then the anesthesia kicked in. 😂. Good luck to anyone doing this procedure. At this point I have no regrets because I definitely feel an improvement. God Bless!
Glad to hear you're doing better and that's great advice you're giving. I'm still dealing with a little bit of soreness but it's not nearly as bad as it was prior to surgery.
Good day, I found you on RUclips this is very helpful. I just had my surgery 7/5/24 at 36 years old.
@@lukeS392 hopefully you have a speedy recovery

You
There's nothing wrong with throwing in the towel, don't be too harsh on yourself. You astound me being on a bike!
I'm now 6 weeks post op. Had 6 week check (via phone) with surgeon today. I've still to be careful for another 6 weeks, because of muscle ans scar still healing. But! I drove the car! Yay! I'm back to work tomorrow (29th). They are great and I'm easing my way back in.
Take care. Xxx
Ya the scars are still a little bothersome, but the surgeon said it should get better within 6-8 weeks
I've actually been doing a lot more on the bike. I'm heading to Kansas to participate in a 100 mile gravel race this Saturday
@@mikebaltierra
That's brilliant. Good luck. Xxx
@@donnamcdonald9 I finished the race. Took 8.5 hours of move time (10 total) - my back didn't bother me one bit.
I am 69 year old gal that today marks 8 weeks since I had lumbar 4 and 5 fused. Did have cramping stiffness on my upper left leg between hip and knee. PT has improved it by almost 70% and today went out using my a cane and not my walker. YAY.
@@lizavila2869 good to hear you're making progress and doing better!
I had the same procedure 3 months ago but my left leg still feels numbness specially at night when I go to bed my question is this is gonna go away
@@normagalvan1933 thanks for watching and the comment. Though it is a vast improvement, I do still get random numbness in my legs especially after waking up in the morning. I asked my surgeon about that and he mentioned it would take 6-12 months since the nerves mend themselves at a rate of 1-2mm per day.... So the taller the person, the longer it will take for nerves to be good to go.
any other spinal issues like spondylolthesis diagnosed?
no - thank goodness.
Is this an anterior or posterior procedure? Since it removes a lot of the bone that protects your spinal column, do you have any concerns about this?
Also, I wanted to ask, did you have a fusion at all?
Or disc replacement?
@@ahiredman thanks for watching! It was a posterior procedure. Not too much of the vertebrae was shaved down or removed, so not worried. I may have been concerned when first told about the procedure. No fusion or disc replacement and I'm back to living an active life style pain free
Did you have your procedure performed in Seattle area
I did. Proliance Orthopedic did the procedure
