I think your review is point on. It has grown on me over a ton of listings. The production of the record i feel drops the songs down a notch. Get Hurt is my favorite Gaslight record i was a little put back by History books but i can honestly say i just love everything theae guys have put out so im not disappointed anymore. Good job on the review bud.
Solid review. I thought the same thing about Brian’s vocals. I wondered if maybe the goal was to hide his fading pipes. But then I saw them live recently, and Brian sounded clear and strong. I wish they had let his voice sing free on the album.
I thought the same thing at first, but I saw them live in Nashville earlier this year, and Brian sounded better than he ever has, and I’ve seen TGA, the Crowes and Brian solo multiple times over the years.
Solid review. Nothing will beat the album Handwritten. All time great. I too think this album is decent but kinda vanilla. Too many slower songs. I do think Spider Bites is a gem but held back by the production a little. This album definitely has a Brian Fallon solo albums feel to it. The energy is a little low and Brians’s voice is held back. I bet a big reason is Brian’s voice is dwindling and he doesn’t wanna make hard songs he won’t be able to sing live. And why only 10 songs after 8 years off. Seems like we got short changed a little. I think the album is respectable but know they can do a lot better. Hopefully they get back after it and release another album next year and bring the fire and fix the production.
I think History Books is like a marriage between Get Hurt and Local Honey. It's very introspective and generally a bit slower, which I can respect. I would expect a bit more hunger and drive from the faster songs, and the slower tracks on the album are definitely its strongest parts. Michigan 1975 and Empires are some of the best stuff they've ever written! What I'm having a hard time coming to terms with is, mostly, the production of the album. It sounds unfinished and muddy. I know that the sound is exactly what they were going for, and I think it works fine for the slower songs, but the faster songs suffer quite a lot because of it. I also think it's far too short. After 8 years, don't they have *at the very least* two or three more songs to offer? In conclusion, I'll say that some of the stuff on History Books rivals their all time best, but in general it's more mediocre than anything, though with quite a bit of potential for growth. A 5.5/10 from me.
I’m mostly in full agreement with what you’ve written here. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who was put off by the production choices. I thought there was something I just wasn’t getting. I agree though, there’s certainly potential for growth. Thanks for watching!

That’s so weird that they went that route with the vocals. That’s awesome that you got to see them live. I’m sure it was a great show!

Let’s hope so! I’m always glad to welcome new Gaslight. And yeah, Handwritten rules. I love Desire, Mae, 45, and the title track. Thanks for watching.

They should’ve gone to butch vigi or Brendan o’nrien.
That would have been nice. I love what O’Brien did with Handwritten. Butch Vig seems like a great fit for GA.
Brutal.
Sounds like you just don't like TGA
