I told our leaders about Hillsong, Bethel, and crew years ago. All it did was fall upon deaf ears. They said that 'was the direction that the church was going'. All it did was bring heartache upon me and my family after that. We had positions of leadership taken from us. We finally left a year ago and found a small reformed church that does RPW. Much happier now.

Something was whispering to my spirit "Hillsong," and I looked on RUclips for it, and saw a listing for "I Surrender" and clicked on it, and was on my knees in tears halfway through it. And I was out of church the whole time that Hillsong was becoming a thing. That was the summer of 2022. Now, in early 2025, and over a year back, my Spotify playlists and suggestions are full of contemporary worship bands/albums with a much smaller audience and a lot less "major record deal" aspirations. Hillsong Worship: almost 6.5 million monthly listeners. Most of what I listen to now on Spotify have a couple of thousand. It's a lot different regime theologically and in genuine praise/worship.

So there’s no excuse other than laziness for using even their songs that do pass a basic doctrinal sniff test. There are a massive number of biblically sound songs from biblically sound writers.
I didn’t notice the first time around that Todd mentioned biblical music- if his stance is that there are musical instruments that aren’t allowed in worship, I would disagree with that. I will say, as soon as the music becomes a distraction or becomes so loud that the congregation cannot hear each other sing, then it has become unbiblical worship. Congregational worship is primarily for the purpose of *singing together* to praise the Lord. If your worship is instrumental only, that is also not acceptable worship.

What if the music emotionally moves you toward God? Music is meant to move you. Otherwise what’s the point of it. You may as well just recite poetry and eliminate music altogether. I’m sorry but I don’t buy this legalistic stuff these guys are teaching. Jesus told us to go into the world and preach the gospel so people could be saved. That is our number one mission. False churches will crumble on their own they don’t need self-righteous Christians to make it their number one mission to “expose” them. Jesus said a nation divided against itself will fall. These guys are not helping the promotion of the Kingdom of God, they are divisive. Sorry to be so blunt but I’ve been a Christian for over 40 years and have witnessed how this kind of thinking has shipwrecked the spiritual journey of a lot of people, many who are now even questioning the existence of God.

The word "new" appears next to the word "song" in the Psalms more than any other term because it's a "new song" for the saints, and our "new song" is distinct and "set apart" from this worlds "old songs" [Ps 33v3; 40v3; 96v1; 98v1]. Please notice that these "new songs" do not point to US; we are not the intended subject-they speak of and *point to God and His Glory.* Music should be a means to promote true worship, not to "emotionally move" people. Whatever may be thought of our taste we have used it without prejudice, and a good hymn has not been rejected because of the character of its author, or the heresies of the church in whose hymnal it first occurred; so long as the language and the spirit commended the hymn to our heart we included it, and believe that we have enriched our collection thereby. The range of subjects is very extensive, comprising not only direct praise, but doctrine, experience, and exhortation; thus enabling the saints according to apostolical command to edify one another in their spiritual songs.” - Charles Spurgeon

I haven't listened to many of their songs cause I was warned since I was young. But I did serve at a church plant for 9 months last year that mostly did CCM songs, and thus included the 3 mentioned. The ones the church chose were okay doctrinally, but they were also very simple and repetitive, so there's not not much to nitpick.
As for Bethel, I'll give you a super obvious one. "There's No One Like You Lord" popped up on my Spotify, and I liked the musical arrangement enough to save it, but as I started to really listen to it, the chorus repeats "Worthy is the Lamb, Who was slain and seated on the throne, And there's no one like the Lord, All of the elders, creatures bow, Giving praise to Him and Him alone, 'Cause there's no one like the Lord"....but biblically, we're told countless times "Jesus is seated at the right hand of the Father", so He's not alone on the throne, and He's not the only one getting praise. They're teaching against the trinity and it could be very confusing to newer believers if they hear that songs first.
I don't doubt that Hillsong probably has some as well. I know the themes and messages of "Oceans" is often questioned since it's popular, but I can't personally say much since I haven't heard all of HIllsong's discography, only a handful. I wouldn't be surprised if they have something just as questionable, even if others haven't made a video talking about it yet. Songs take a lot of time to listen, so I wouldn't even care to dig deeper if I already know the church isn't standing on solid ground to begin with, just to prove a point. Enough people have warned against them, so I need to guard my heart and mind first~

Worship pastors use these songs if the lyrics are OK and in alignment with the Bible. They are using them to enhance the service.
Worship music has become a stumbling block for me. I used to serve on a worship team and in choir (for 20 years). Then, all of these people started coming out talking about Hillsong, Bethel, etc. I’m glad they did. I had some of the same reservations at times. Now, I’m totally clueless as to what we’re supposed to do for worship music. If we do all hymns, people leave or sleep. If we do the new stuff, it’s wrong. So what is the answer?
Is there no way to honor God with our worship without nitpicking everything apart? It seems as long as the lyrics are OK and your heart is in the right place that it may be it’s a good offering to the Lord. I don’t know all of the answers, but my heart is heavy. Because now I hardly worship in song at all, which is quite sad for someone who has been called to worship ministry. Now I just sit in the pews. 😢

    • @kamekomiyamora
      @kamekomiyamora 2 дня назад

I'll share my story. I grew up Seventh-Day Adventist, which was a mix of hymns and older Christian/gospel songs. When I read through the bible in high school (around 2011), I started realizing some flaws in our theology and was confused about the gospel, but before I could come to a conclusion, I just got caught up with work, school, dating, etc. A couple years ago, I realized how dark this world is and ran back to God, and finally understood the true gospel. I was truly transformed.
Now, I also took music all through school, but dabbled in various instruments, wasn't great at any. I had a band dream though, so before my revelation, I picked up guitar and started a rookie band. I never liked western secular music cause it was sexual and full of sin, violence, pride etc, but I loved Japanese music which was more positive, good messages, sang about courage and changing the world and standing up for what's right etc. But after I was transformed, I Just didn't care to listen to music. I preferred silence. I did listen to some old gospel songs I remembered, but I was also binging a lot of Christian RUclips videos, so I knew to beware of Bethel and Hillsong, and also found out singers my family used to listen to like Kirk Franklin are worldly and compromising, so it was dangerous grounds. I wasn't even sure what Sunday church to go to, so I went back to an SDA church for a few weeks, but the false doctrine was clear as day since they were covering Revelation that quarter, so I left, and told my mom I'm never going back. Thankfully, I moved out already, but we still live pretty close to each other.
So last year, a church reached out to me as they needed musicians. It was a church plant in the city over, but they could give me a ride. I did ask doctrinal questions and it seemed to check out, so I agreed to go. They were non-denominational, but Pentecostal in nature, which was new to me. They were all immigrants from Nigeria, but I'm born here and of Caribbean-descent, so they may naturally click but I'm already the odd one out. Anyways, I was expecting some complex gospel music since they're black, but they actually played CCM music, which was great for me to jump into with my skill level. This was the first time I really gave their songs a listen. A few, I heard before but didn't know it was Hillsong like Goodness of God, since I heard it first in the SDA church (made me cry), and then had Cece Winan's version on my phone. I had Spencer Smith's words in my head when screening them, and I see what he means by sorcery, in that it's just super catchy, super repeatitive, 'boyfriend' songs with Jesus replacing him, and not much doctrine. Since Pentecostals feels music is vital to 'worship', they aim for the feel good stuff. And since we were a small church and moved to a location without a projector/screen, songs that were easy for people to sing along with sounded like a benefit, but honestly, I still had issues.
Now, I knew I needed a church. I lost a lot of friends when I was reborn and was sharing, so I saw the need for a community. But I also wanted a place where I could truly grow in God. When everything started to click for me, like this world is evil, that everything here is temporary, just how much God desires to spend time with me, and how important my walk of holiness is when it comes to connecting with Him and leading others to Him, like, I want to be encourages and enlightened, and hopefully find others who are as passionate. I didn't find that there though. As much as people sang and spoke in tongues, they were more focused on the world. They read their bibles and such, but they were more concerned about work and finding a husband. The pastor preached the true gospel, but it was very seeker friendly. I'd ask him questions bout various things, but he said we shouldn't talk bad about ANY pastor, and how deeper bible stuff is for small groups, and how he'd avoid the question if a gay person asked if it was okay, and it was clear that he cared more about growing a church and being likeable. There were other things I questioned and argued about, cause his wife was also a pastor, things like tongues, or him pushing marriage on me when being single is even encouraged. He just felt he was right and would push his idea, even though I had a lot of verses supporting my views.
For me, worship isn't about music, it's a lifestyle, it's obedience, it's doing what God told us to do. But if we want to praise God, it should actually be focused on God. A lot of songs talk about what God does for us, and who He is to us, like how he provides, and helps us, and will bless us, and how He's a good father....and that's not completely bad, but it's focused on us and how we feel. I think if we're gonna worship God, we need to praise all his characteristics, not just His love, but His righteousness and justice, His wrath and jealousy, His strength and majesty. And if we're going to sing to minister to ourselves, hymns are better because they really tell us about the Christian walk, how we should think, how we should act, what the gospel is all about and so on.
So anyways, I left that church, not just for that, but because they weren't transparent. I was serving freely, and even volunteering and helping out with other things, but they were paying other musicians who didn't come prepared, and didn't even listen to the songs beforehand. I was already annoyed since they didn't seem to care or love my God, but made worse when I realized they were making money. We're a church plant that can barely afford rent! One time, the pastor even hired a muslim girl. I was already bothered when I found that out after service, but made worse when we kept chatting and she said that was the case. We need to worship God in spirit and in truth. But it was clear the pastor just wanted a big worship team and a big church to show off with, rather than asking himself what would God want and what would please Him the most. There was also other drama and such, and it just didn't feel worth it to wake up at 6am (when I normally wake up at 10), travelling an hour both ways, out for 6 hours a day, for a church where I'm not being fed at, and my passion and zeal for God is constantly being poured on with cold water, yet I was still being used to serve in various ways to help the church function and grow, so I was just burnt out.
I said I would wait for God before making assumptions and joining a church again, lest I be grieved once more. A Baptist church came to my door, and asked me if I knew the gospel, to explain it, if I felt I was saved and if I could lose my salvation, so we had a good discussion. Decided to check em out. Very small church. They use a hymnal, and lacking musicians, they had a piano recording playing, and his wife accompanied it with violin. Very hard hitting sermon, which I really appreciate. The members were friendly, mostly white and Asian, which I'm used to. I'm from Toronto, super multicultural, but I tend to fit in more with whites and Asians due to my interests, like musicals and anime haha. The wife and another lady did ask if I can sing or play anything, and they were excited I could, but they're not pushing. It's one of those 'if I want to one week, just let them know' thing.
I don't know if the above really answered your question. When I was at that church, I was thinking like you in that "if the lyrics of this specific song align, I guess it's okay?" but even then, the lyrics are rarely deep or anything to meditate on. Spotify recommended one of Bethel's newer songs "No One Like You Lord", and musically, I loved the arrangement, so I added it to liked songs. But maybe like 10 listens in, I was like "wait a second....". Main message of the song is that "Jesus is seated alone on his throne, him and him alone, there's no one like you Lord", but in the bible, we're told countless times, "Jesus is seated at the right hand of the Father". Sadly, many people don't read the bible, so they may not even realize this is clearly against the trinity and good doctrine. While I understanding wanting to be seeker sensitive to newbies, I think songs that either don't share anything about the bible or that slip in questionable things can lead them astray or allow them to be comfortable with a very basic Christianity. I heard another video put it best, a lot of evangelical churches are just 'a cheap concert and a ted talk', and I had to agree.
Music is beautiful and amazing, but Satan was a worship leader and he now uses music to cause many to sin, planting toxic seeds, incantations about pride and wickedness. I got so annoyed when I used to scroll reels and songs like "Bodyshop" or Doja Cats "Shes the devil" song would come up. I would never listen to these songs, but they would pop up so much that even if I heard a millisecond of it, it would be stuck in my head again, and I would forcibly try to kick it out. I think some CCM songs and artists are okay, but if we were to have anything looping in our heads, I think it's much better if it's something that would actually strengthen us, cause it's built on good doctrine or even quotes a verse, instead of just something that makes us hum, ya know? Hope that helps!

Agree on no perfect church and each situation is different, we left a church after 20 years, my wife felt that she could change a church from the inside and made a little bit of progress initially but as Justin said this starts with the church leadership and for every perceived step forward there were 2 immediately backwards, where does the line get drawn? We had female preachers, Bethel teachings, Sozo and School of Super Natural Ministry a very weak/ false gospel (life enhancement and downplaying of sin) no church discipline and much much more, there were many very kind people who love God but are greatly deceived, Famine In The Land have done a good piece on issues to look out for, we still battle with how much we say to people we left behind in that movement. Matthew 7 22-23 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy by thy name, and by thy name cast out demons, and by thy name do many mighty works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Our local cafe played “Good Grace” which clearly states “our salvation is in His blood.” MacArthur has made confusing and contradictory claims on this in the past. Also, eschatology is way underrated. The “secondary” and “tertiary” labels are made up and can easily lead to a disjointed hermeneutic.

I do pay attention to the words, and I will object to false doctrine from the stage either in the teaching or the music. But if the doctrine in the lyrics is sound, I do not feel an added burden to search out every one of the original sources and do a background on them.
Why is it somehow insufficient to know the Bible and test the lyrics against Scripture? Are you really asserting that we need to do backgrounds on all the original artists? Why do we need to develop, maintain, and enforce a list of "unacceptable" artists?

After being educated on how Hillsong, Bethel and Elevation does things at their churches, I do avoid their music, but I still love my modern Christian music that I grew up on. It seems to me that along with Justin Peter's disdain for their music, he also seems to disapprove of modern styles of music that isn't in the hymn modal of chord progression. If it isn't a "blue-haired Betty" plunking away at an organ or piano, along with a congregation that couldn't find the right key to sing in to save their lives, it doesn't belong in the church. I do understand that songs we sing in church aren't necessarily for us to think it sounds pretty, but for the Lord to be praised and worshipped. So, what do we do? Go all the way back to the "true" traditional music of the early church? I hope everyone likes Gregorian chants. Or maybe go back even farther to King David and bring back harps for everyone. Well, that's my thoughts about the subject. Have a blessed day in the Lord.

Ya, I love Todd, but in this area he seems to have a really hard time understanding the difference between preference and what Christian music is - most of the time he is really talking about his preference. If a church just had traditional music I probably show up late a lot more. Worship music is supposed to be a time that brings you closer to God, but if you can’t stand the style of the music it’s not going to do that. There is nothing unchristian about having musical preferences.

I just started back at church post a major break at our past church that a lot broke off due to harsh ruling and money control. And aweful tactics. Haven’t been to one for a while after that happened. New church we started at is nondenom and quite large and I love they have great children’s ministry. But we are on week six and we have barely been greeted I’ve never spoken to the pastor really and they sing modern music for 30mins and have one 30 min Sunday service a week. They have a Bible study Wednesday evening. No prayers no leader in the room. We watch another church on the tv. I’ve never heard the gospel or alter call. They had a baptism that happened on the side of the stage in the middle of a song and then walked bake stage. Don’t know who it was or her story. Know one even talked about the fact that she accepted Christ. We’ve tried other churches near me and still I haven’t found a fit. Am I being picky or are my convictions right? I’m used to old school traditional Baptist church but it became so legalistic and not cultivating my growth due to shame of my lack of knowledge. I just want an accepting church family with kids ministry and firm grounding on the word. I’ve come a long way with online ministry and learning to Bible study and I want more. I feel so distraught because I can’t drive 30+ mins to church after school and work and back before bedtime for my kids if we go that far. Am I being too picky? And if I leave the nondenom church to I talk to leadership before i go? Ask why they don’t share the gospel?

Read 1Cor 5 (very short chapter) and then come back and concentrate on verses 6 and 7 (Do you not know that a little leaven ferments the whole batch of dough?) and verse 11 (But now I am writing you to stop keeping company -- not even eating with such a man). I know there are many people who say that the ministry (songs, church, evangelism, missionary) are bringing people to Jesus and they might be at first but eventually because of the wrong teaching the holy spirit won’t be there. The church will tickle people’s ears to stay in business or die altogether. In the mean time those people will be worse off than they were before. They will end up hating Jesus or following the wide road and not even know it.
Since I can remember (maybe 5 years old) I have wanted to know God and searched for him my whole life (I will be 55 this year). I have been in and out of churches and through many different “Christian” organizations. Every church I left had a serious fatal flaw but in all cases I hadn’t been there long enough to do anything about it. Currently I have been out of church at least 3 years and it bothers me that I am not among brothers. I study the bible (not just read) every day. I must say life is so much easier if I start my day in prayer because it keeps my mind on God all day long. I will say this (simplified) One God, the fall of man, what sin is (the law), the son of God Jesus, why Jesus suffered Gods wrath and died, Jesus rose and sits as our intercessor, Gods final judgement, 2 greatest commandments, finally your heart condition on everything above. Any organization that defers from this in the slightest, have nothing to do with them. Eve was deceived, don’t think you can’t be. Read the bible and pray; you can fight the enemy.

Just not my style. Music is an art and art is meant to inspire. When all the music has the same sound and it’s not a music type that appeals to you, well, it’s not something you will listen to. I mean they're not wrong - I think we need to remember that songs aimed for glorifying God in corporate worship will encompass that imperfection becuse the reality is all songs come from imperfect bodies (did you know the song 'O, Holy Night' was actually written by an atheist?) and I say this - you can in good faith be in a theologically solid church and sing some of Hillsong songs , not because of who Hillsong is, but because of what some of their songs reflect corporately about who God is . Just because a song was made 300+ years ago, it doesn't make it more revering to God and equally, a song made in the modern day with all the knowledge we may have, isn't better either. Look at the lyrics and discern accordingly.
Anecdotally, my church mainly sings Sovereign Grace music, City Alight, the Gettys and older hymns but we have a few Hillsong songs that are sung but all the ones that are are gospel pointing. In my own daily life, Sovereign Grace Music, City Alight , Emu Music and the Gettys make up my playlist and yet, I can sing those songs in a corporate setting because the songs are pointing to the nature of God and not to me.

The main (and perhaps only) criteria for judging whether a song is worthy of singing in church should be the lyrics themselves. Are they Biblical? Do they glorify God? If so, then I don’t care who wrote it. If it’s true; if it’s honoring to Christ, then I say “Sing it!” At that point, it has nothing to do with where it originated.

This persons entire ministry is built around picking on those who do not agree with his ways...but of course he thinks they are GOD's way....

I have been wondering this also. I sing a lot of the songs they sing, always loved watching them also. But they have been bringing in a lot of the music I've ran from.

How do we know if our church is practicing church discipline? What types of sins would require church discipline?

How is it biblical to worship with songs written centuries after the biblical times by people whose hearts we can’t know accompanied by pipe organ?

I have enjoyed your work for a while now. I think I first saw you on the Fox News channel late at night years ago.
I am also a believer who put my trust in our Savior Jesus Christ many years ago.
With that said, I'm not sure I agree or see the validity of abstaining from "Hillsong" worship songs if they are theologically sound, or at least not promoting any views that's contrary to God's Word.
That said, all music was contemporary/new at one point or another.
I am a musician who has taught music and the guitar/bass to people for over 20 years. I see music as a gift to the soul. It helps bring out those emotions while we worship our Lord and Savior through song.
I appreciate your videos, and we align on most things, but this anti-Hillsong viewpoint, I'm not sure we agree.
    Take care!
