So I was the kind of person that holed up in the starting area (after rescue-warping all my units to the bigger right-side starting position), and just waited out the reinforcements. This took 3 and half hours, and I do not recommend it.
merrin is only to be getting a point in strength about every 3 levels, thief is not a particularly strong class

Edit: oh, and I suppose 3H is also the exception where thieves are a promotable class?
