The Castlevania Timeline - CASUALLY Explained

  • Plenty of games have a story that spreads across multiple entries. But Castlevania followed generations of vampire hunters as they engaged in a literal blood feud with Dracula and his undying minions.
This snippet of an episode of Laser Time SUPER CAZH explains this occasionally confusing timeline with some broad generalizations and stream of consciousness musings. If something's slightly off... ok!
Happy biiiiirthday-ish to Castlevania by the way. Turned 30 in 2016 and sure wish there was a new... anything?... to play on this milestone year. Guess we can 1000% Portrait again?

the Castlevania timeline isn't even confusing it's literally just who killed Dracula in what year.

donuts82 Yeah, I also put all my hopes in Bloodstained. But unfortunately, all these Kickstarter "spiritual sequels" thus far turned out bad or decent at most. Mighty No 9 was bad, Yooka Laylee was fun, but had many problems, and many don't like it. I really hope Bloodstained will do better.

Brauner didn't want to resurrect Dracula. He just wanted the castle's power to destroy humanity. Death wanted to resurrect Dracula.
Julius didn't trap Dracula in the eclipse. He trapped the castle itself, and then killed Dracula (who didn't resurrect because he had no more power since the castle gave him said power).
Side note: Order of Ecclesia is imho the best game in the series.

I think PoR is my favorite too. I didn't liked that you explored smaller areas rather than the big castle in OoE, I much more preferred the portraits within the castle. I also really liked that you could switch between the two characters at any time in PoR.
CotM was my first one, so it has a special place in my heart. I really loved the style and atmosphere and disliked the bright coloring that followed in the next games, especially HoD.

+Dio Yea. Genya Arikado is Alucard. Alucard in Japanese is Arukado. Notice the Arikado = Arukado is sounds similiar. Also if you play Aria of Sorrow, in the beginning of the game, when Soma interact with Arikado for the 1st time, Arikado use 'Soul Steal' spell against the monster that attack Soma and Mina.

Yeah and Yoko almost tells you that Arikado is Alucard at the clocktower in Aria of sorrow. Even so, I dont think Soma has idea of who is Alucard, he only says that he knows the story of Dracula being the Dark Lord, but he doesnt say anything about Belmonts or any people that killed Dracula.

I hate that Sonia has been removed from the canon. I'm not a huge Castlevania fan, having only played about 90% of Harmony of Dissonance, but i always liked that the progenitor of the Belmonts was a 17 year old girl who basically said "I kicked Dracula's ass, my sons will kick his ass and my grandsons will kick his ass, I'LL SEE TO IT!!"

agree, heck she could be inserted after the 18xx timeline but before 1999, it would have been awesome to say, julius was so bad-ass he destroyed dracula permanently because sonia was her grandma/great-grandma and it would make more sense why he was the one belmont who finally did it

    • @vitocorleone4799
      @vitocorleone4799 5 лет назад

Lament of innocence is a lot better origin story then legends cause lament of innocence story makes perfect sense between the Belmont and Dracula, legends was confusing as fuck at that time I'm glad legends is non canon cause it was very confusing, and also Sonia is pregnant and the father is alucard and I'm like "Wtfff????" Very fucking confusing cause it didn't make any sense at all, but on Lament of innocence the story makes a lot of sense and plot between the Belmont clan and Dracula origin.

  • @TheWotch
    @TheWotch 8 лет назад +2

I really enjoyed that, thank you. I love this kind of stuff. I'm a sucker for the Zelda timeline and comics continuity and all that. Good time!
The one thing I would have mentioned is that Soma can technically turn to the dark side in Aria (and Dawn), both of which would lead to a different reality where Julius, Alucard, and Yoko need to team up Castlevania 3-style to take him down. Since those games are at the chronological end of the timeline, it's interesting that both outcomes of Dawn could theoretically happen, since no later game takes place. Kind of a cool somewhat ambiguous ending. (Though, as you say, the canon ending should still be considered Soma's overcoming the curse and winning.)

I still remember picking up Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest when it first came out. After school me and my Dad went to Toys R Us and got it and we absolutely had a blast playing completely through the game. As my Dad’s really talented at playing video games. But Castlevania II being as cryptic as it is. I was essentially the navigator. As several of my friends parents had also picked up the game. So we’d just discuss strategy and game play on the bus to and fro from school. As well as recess. And of course we all had our Nintendo Power subscriptions as well as strategy guides.
Now I know that in contemporary views that this game isn’t all that praised. But I honestly do love this game. However, I will admit that much of that affection is due to sharing the experience of deciphering the game in and of itself. As it was quite the convoluted game. Nevertheless, this game always brings a smile to my face. And I can’t wait to play it with my Dad come Christmas time. As well as another unduly hated offering: Zelda II: Link’s Adventure. Another nostalgic favorite of mine.

It bothers me when people say it has the "feel of the classics" when it doesn't. It tries way too hard to be epic and dark. IGA even did a better blend of classic and modern with Dracula X Chronicles, one of the best games/remakes out there. There is also Castlevania The Adventure REBIRTH which was solid, if not inventive.

Castlevania games have always been well known for their "cheesy" dialog. Game play wise they have been very challenging. Like the NES castlevania Freaking hard games.. When it comes to animated Castlevania, I could not have been happier with that show! well done, and I am sure there are going to be people who piss and moan.. As they just can't just enjoy a well made animated show.
Time line aside.. Just sit back and enjoy the animated version for what it is. Thanks for all the hard work trying to link all this together. A hard job, as these games where not created in this manner. It has always had that "cheesy" story line and story feel.
I for one, think Castlevania animated series on Net Flix was one of the BETTER shows I have seen since Spawn Cartoon back in the 90's.
I have enjoyed most all the games. The show today, speaks to me as creative and well written, and homage paid to many in GAME Easter eggs.

@ Lord Tullus 9 [Puffy Sprinkles: Alucard is Dracula son, his mother is Lisa the woman in the starting scene. who is burned at the stake for being a witch. How does the belmont clan come back? Not sure yet. they are just basing these off some of the games and story lines. The speakers are from Castlevania 3 Dracula's curse.. where you could play 3 different characters. Trevor Belmont is the last of the clan, which we know already was Excomunicated from the church. I think it was by plot line design that Belmont comes back, as the speakers pass down their knowledge in spoken form, NEVER writing it on paper, as paper is DEAD. Belmonts pass down weapons, like his whip, and Magical weapons we say.. Like the Javelin thrown that bounced off one priest to hit another! The speakers prophecy stated, It would be a hunter, a scholar, and the Sleeping solider. READ this link... It might help... All I know is I love this show!!!! It is pulling from many different aspects.. and does it quite well.. throwing in little tid bit lines.. Like when Trevor hits the demon and it explodes.. he claims.... "The whip was Consecrated for fighting vampire and demons." Lots of little drop hints that HELP those who have no outside knowledge... And does not make HIM very over powered.. he has his flaws, and leaves much room for his character Arc. castlevania.wikia.com/wiki/Alucard/Netflix_series

    • @OldieWan

Alucard was born in the mid 1450's to Vlad Dracula and Lisa Tepes. Nearly twenty years later in 1475, Lisa was falsely accused of witchcraft and burned at the stake. Upon learning that Dracula had begun summoning an army from Hell, Alucard confronted his father, begging him not to kill innocent people for revenge. When Dracula refused to listen, Alucard fought his father but was defeated, leaving him with a large scar on his chest. Beneath the city of Gresit, Alucard placed himself inside a coffin to recover his strength. A legend about him then spread, stating that a "sleeping soldier" awaited beneath Gresit and that he would be met by a hunter and a scholar.
In 1476, Alucard awoke to find a hunter, Trevor Belmont, and a scholar, Sypha Belnades. While Sypha believed him to be the sleeping soldier, Trevor was convinced that he was Dracula. With the hunter's intent on killing him, Alucard fought Trevor. When his opponent landed a slash across his chest, Alucard retaliated by pinning Trevor on the ground and prepared to bite him. Suddenly, he was stabbed at the heart by Trevor, who was intent on killing him even at the cost of his own life. After seeing both Trevor and Sypha's resolves, Alucard stood down from harming Trevor and introduced himself, stating that he had been waiting for them to help him destroy Dracula. Convinced that the three of them were capable of killing his father, Alucard set off with Trevor and Sypha on their journey.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night on Play station was such a great game! Was a side scrolling Throw back to the older games! I spent over 80 hours on this game! Even the colors of red as alucard moved really fast was just like when you would back step in game! SO wonderful! They also pay homage to the RE-verse castle of Dracula in the puddle of water in a starting scene, that was IMO an easter egg paying homage to the Upside down 2nd part of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. I have it on my ps3 classic games! Also the SAVE game point, is the SAME casket Alucard is sleeping in Beneath the city of Gresit. The cyclops from other castlevania games, the headless AXE men. I could go on and on, about all the little things I saw! But I grew up on these games as a kid! My first NES castlevania was played when I was only 7 years old! Edit--Added a couple other easter Egg finds I noticed. I am just really happy for the series.. Not claiming it is perfect.. but just sit back and enjoy the ride! :D Hope that helps a little bit.

For those confused with the canonicity of CotM, 64, LoD and Legends, here's an excerpt from a 1up.com interview iga did back then. The page itself is not accessible because the website is dead, but luckily this part has been preserved.
_"These games were taken out of the timeline, not because I didn't work on them, but because they were considered by their directors to be side projects in the series, especially Legacy of Darkness and Circle of the Moon. The only exception to this trend is Dark Prelude (Castlevania Legends) - I intentionally redacted it from the timeline so that it doesn't conflict with the timing used in other titles."_

You could fit Circle of the Moon in somehow, along with Legacy of Darkness and 64, Judgement is just a side story alluding to the main series, with characters pulled before or after they defeat Dracula. Once you complete that game as a certain character, the ending will consist of what happens in the respective game they are from e.g. after Simon defeats the Time Reaper, he goes back to his time and learns of the wound he sustained in his fight against Drac in the original Castlevania, leading to Simon’s Quest.

It's on the list with no details or annotations; Koji Igarashi omitted those three games (and Legends, others) from the official timeline. Notice that Circle, C64 and LoD are all listed in blue with no further details. They're there because it's a marketing piece that isn't going to leave out products the company produced.

Ludwig Mascarenhas It's a great game, it's just that it wasn't significant at all to the timeline storywise. Like, who the hell is Nathan Graves? Why does he have the Vampire Killer?
It's just a mindless fun game where you kill Dracula one more time following the Metroidvania style from SotN.
It was much more of a experimentation than anything.
      Still, awesome game.

All the time I hear the term “Metroidvania” I imagine a game where Simon and Samus crossover. Some bullshit along the lines of Dracula manipulating time and space in which he acquires a type of metroid and uses it to become stronger or something like that. Samus tracing the stolen Metroid discovers a dark magic portal which makes her appear in Dracula’s castle and it’s up to her to recover or exterminate that specific metroid. Simon, on the other hand, follows Dracula or one of his minions and gets transported to IDK, the galactic federation where they get attacked by space pirates, vampires and zombies so Simon has to save the day. Maybe they’ll gear him up with some space suit but he keeps the whip.

Oh wow i never knew Trever belmont was only in castlevania 3. I always thought the first castlevania game was Trever belmont. But yeah i can see how that makes sense now. But I always thought the timeline was Lament, then the gameboy game with Sophia Belmont, then alucard makes an appearance, then have a child named Trevor belmont setting up Castlevania 1, then Castlevania 3 dracula's curse, then simons quest. but i completely forgot about the forge master, which had trevor in it. But I always thought the forge master came directly after Castlevania 3, then setting up into simons quest.

It’s kind of weird that as the timeline went on, Dracula came back more often, but the Belmonts had to stop him less often. I guess we can interpret this as humanity growing to the point where their darkness was more prevalent than ever, but so was their ability to beat the darkness back. And this all culminates with Soma Cruz inheriting the legacy of the dark lord and remaining a good guy, symbolizing humanity’s ultimate triumph over its own inner darkness.
    Or am I overthinking it?

Timelines on some sites place it there, since it still fills a gap, but Igarashi definitely removed Legends from his official chronology a long time ago. He personally didn't like the game, and made Lament the new start of the series instead. It's a similar situation to what happened with Sakamoto and Metroid Prime.
Unless there's been an update since then, that's the last official word I know on it, and it's the same source that was used for this video.

    • @PcolaAzian

Legends also kind of implies that Trevor is the son of Sonia and Alucard, which has some pretty far reaching implications if left in. If it was just a matter of whether Sonia existed and fought Dracula, I don't think its place in the timeline would really matter and they could take or leave it without significance. But "the Belmont lineage might be related to Dracula by direct bloodline" isn't a thread to just leave dangling out there.

Its actually a concise, organized, easy to follow timeline. Just crowded.
Even though I never really took to the Kojima Production(RIP, the Konami one anyways.) reboot of Castlevania so much, I did at least understand why they might have felt the need to reboot. As much as I love the original CV and all this timeline, it really is a pretty crowded timeline. I can't think of very many spaces left to fit a new game within it other than of course the much wanted but never attained 1999 game, or continuing Soma's story.
Not to say it's impossible, but it'd be a pretty tight fit. I am glad the netflix series is taking place in the original timeline CV3 though, rather than a reboot.

They did not trap Dracula in a solar eclipse. They trapped the castle itself, the source of dracula's power, in the eclipse. Then, when Julius kills Dracula, Dracula cannot return to his castle and died his final death, entering the cycle of reincarnation and becoming Soma. Also, 64 and Legacy of Darkness game are part of the canon. They take place after Lecard and Morris and before Portrait of Ruin. Cornell's story happens before Reinhardt's.
