In the 60s, I heard him described as, "suave and sophisticated". All 3 terms are correct, but he stands out because he was no snob- he drew people to him with the same qualities that turn most of us away. He's definitely one of the larger 'gems' in England's actor-studded crown.

One of the more interesting things about this movie. The magic/magician adviser of this movie was a real life professional magician. And a Vaudeville headliner. He also wrote a book on Card magic that is still being published today. He appears twice in this movie. Once producing cards and an egg with the comedy assistant of the great Artero. And once on-stage when as an on-stage assistant when the star of the movie is vanishing a girl in what is called a tip over the box. His name, Paul LePaul and the book he wrote was called The Card Magic of LePaul. For a close to true look at Theater magic/magicians - past times. This movie does a very good job of it.

@@Stardustpal25 It is easy to hypnotize rabbits doves and small animals. Howard Thurston used to hypnotize a large duck and made a big deal out of it in his live show. It is also Paul LePaul that hypnotizes the rabbit, and does all the hand close up slight of hand.

Narcotic i watched last night old very riduculous drug scene..women using needles cocaine..i actually thought it should be seen by more people..just for really intense scene& some bleak fake chinese dude reminded me of a bad opium using Leanard Nemo..well tmi but addicted to really great old movies..ines that teach me something..Glinda was well helping them thru drug enhanced bad dream. Post covid is a bad dream. Prior to covid i had just begun persuing well made or cultish b movies...but did love oz. Oz was kinda like todays world flying monkeys druggies& strange magical creatures who cannot be called out for being heartless or brainless or fearless..well fear full tmi ..sorry.TMC was my fav channel watch tons every chance i get. I can't believe I've never seen this one before? I thought I'd seen all the classic pictures featuring Loretta Young and/or David Niven? This film had a great cast of characters, Eve Arden, Broderick Crawford, who wasn't type cast to play the heavy?Taking the role of that big teddybear type, although he's much thinner here and his voice isn't as gruff. Then of course Billie Burke, who played Glinda the good Witch in The Wizard of OZ. Her voice is so distinct.

Trust me you will not be sorry. I love when he writes about Humphrey Bogart and his first wife and Bacall and Bogarts love for each other C'est Magnifique . Sorry I will get off the soap box now.

In this magical romantic comedy,a dashing escape artist steals the heart ❤️ of a beautiful bride-to-be while performing in her bridal shower.but when he refuses to give up the show biz life, she performs a disappearing act of her own!! This film was made with the 1939 world’s fair as the backdrop! Loretta young, David Niven, Hugh Herbert, Billie Burke, Eve Arden and zasu pitts were a good cast in the movie-David Niven and Loretta young would be great again in this bishop’s wife and Broderick Crawford ( before all the king’s men) is young but a jealous bum in the flick! I give it 4 ⭐️ stapes stars ! 😊😊😊😊😊😊

I do like this film and I understand why she left him but to get a quickie divorce and remarry quickly was ridiculous

long before but He took a break as he returned to Britain to serve in WW2. Which meant he lost his star status for a time.
Famously as he was leading a patrol of scout cars across a dangerous bridge he rallied his men by saying "Its alright for you ,you only have to do this once. after the war I will have to do it over again but with Errol Flynn!"

Back when they could tell a good story in 1 hour 22 minutes (instead of a boring one in 3 hours). David Niven was very handsome when he was young. You've got to feel sorry for Lola and the second husband, who aren't treated particularly well by the lovebirds.

I really admire those films and the actresses of the golden era were fabulously feminine but I can't help myself notice how skinny they were, as you can easily see they were skin and bones(especially the ones in leading roles and men were no exception)...Now I can comprehend that being slim is definitely healthy and at that period of time people were naturally slimmer then nowadays...but was not kinda too much even for that time?!?

Meliapan today’s women even in their 20s are fat and fat! I go to the supermarket and of course they’re the ones wearing tight shorts or are they tight because their legs are bigger than mine. Many actresses were actually quite vivacious! Need I mention a few? Actually, Loretta Young maintained the same figure through her entire acting career.

Yes, they are astonishingly thin, and would have been even thinner in real life as the camera would have put weight on them. At one point in the film David Niven estimates he is 175 pounds, which I guess is still slim for a man over 6 foot.

The studios wanted their leading women to be slim and put them on diets. Niven was naturally slim as was James Stewart, who, if I remember correctly, was put on a banana diet by the studio , to make him put on weight.
They wanted the leading women to be very slim, but they didn't want men to be too slim.

Billie Burke was called Glinda not Glenda in Wizard of Oz.Niven's film career started in 1935.

Billy Burke's voice is the most unique & sweet voice I've ever heard. As a child, I really believed she was an angel.

@@barbarabowman3328 Yes her voice truly is unique, as soon as I heard her speak, I knew exactly who she was, who could forget Glinda, a role she made famous, and that voice so sweet and a child-like innocence to it. As a child, we all would think her the epitome of goodness, and even now, nearing my seventies, there is still that child saying the world is not so bad after all.

I feel like I've seen the magician act of creating the woman from another movie.
I've seen it before the exact clips, but I've never watched this movie before. I don't remember this storyline at all.
